One of the rare nights my parents let my brother and I stay up to watch Monday Night Football and Howard Cosell got choked up making the announcement over the air during the game. Howard had become a friend of John's years earlier when John paid him a visit ring side to a boxing match he was announcing. My parents made my brother and I go to bed after that. I was crushed, just a few months earlier John released Watching the Wheels, and it was my favorite song at the time. I didn't listen to it again for years afterwards. I felt the music had died at that moment.

I was 29 years old, managing a live music club in a small North Texas town when the news of Lennon's murder was broadcast. I went home and cried all night not only because Lennon was dead but because my youth was gone

My dad had me and my siblings learn this song in the 80s. In the hopes we might be part of making the world a better place in the future. The dreamers. I grew up listening to both the Beatles and John Lennon, and I'm sure I've heard everything both artists have ever produced. Lennon was a once in a lifetime gift. But... This is John Lennon's self-described anthem to Socialism. As you analyze the lyrics more and more each time you listen, you begin to realize that this anthem leaves nothing much left of the things that make humans happy, both individually and in society: faith, tribe, personal attainment, etc. Its lyric could easily include "Nothing to Live or Die for..."

This is John Lennon's self-described anthem to Socialism. As you analyze the lyrics more and more each time you listen, you begin to realize that this anthem leaves nothing much left of the things that make humans happy, both individually and in society: faith, tribe, personal attainment, etc.
Its lyric could easily include "Nothing to Live or Die for..."

John Lennon was correct. Religion separates people. If there's anything that has caused more war and horror in this world it is mankind's invention of differing religions. If religion had never been invented we would be one step closer to living as one.

@@stevennovakovich2525 The problem is religion was a concept developed thousands of years ago before there was scientific knowledge and understanding, which resulted in fear due to ignorance. It was a way to both reassure and placate people as well as to control and keep them in line. However some people prefer to remain ignorant and believe we should live in the exact same way the masses did when we had far fewer answers and less understanding, and follow everything written in a book under such circumstances literally. Fear and the desire to judge others are two very strong emotions that are hard to shake.
