  • One of the most common questions friends have been asking me is why does my garbage disposal leak from the bottom? I have installed garbage disposals 3 times since Thanksgiving alone. Two of our friends had their garbage disposal leaking.

📺 Installing Garbage Disposal DIY: Insinkerator Badger 5 Installation: • Installing Garbage Dis...
This is such a common occurrence so we decided to help answer your questions of what causes garbage disposal leaks. The only way to root cause leaking garbage disposal is to disassemble your old leaking garbage disposal and forensically determine where the water is coming from, and determine why you have a garbage disposal leaking from the bottom. This unit is an Insinkerator Badger 100, which we replaced with another new Insinkerator Badger 100.
    Sources of garbage disposal leaks
There are numerous places that could spring a leak from the garbage disposal. We've had people report their garbage disposal leaking from reset button, some people report their garbage disposal leaking from base, and some report their garbage disposal leaking from side cracks. Unfortunately, most people think there's a way to repair and start looking for a garbage disposal leaking from bottom fix.
Well usually he leaks are caused by rust inside the unit, so it's not worth it to by a couple of expensive parts, you're better off starting with a new garbage disposal installation, and start your 1-3 year warranty all over again. Sometimes the problem with the lower end bargain garbage disposal model, they tend to corrode after several years of use, and most homeowners don't know how to extend the life of their garbage disposal before it starts to leak.
So anytime someone tells you their garbage disposal leaks from bottom or sides, just tell them put a fork in it, because they need to install a new garbage disposal. The rusty and leaking garbage disposal you see in this video came out of our 85 year old friend's house, after she complained to me that the garbage disposal leaks water out the bottom by the wires.

Your explanation and diagnosis convinced me where the problem was. Installed a new disposal the next day using your how to video. Works like a champ. Jeff, great video on how corrosion and degradation of seal material ends up in a leaky disposal. Just had to replace mine and had a bit of trouble locating the very slow leak. Turned out water was getting into the small electrical compartment and leaking through that small metal cover. Also, thanks for the reminder on cold water and letting the disposal run for a bit to get water and waste out.

Excellent video Jeff showing the inside of the garbage disposer and how they work. Jeff it is worth the money to buy a disposer with a stainless steel crushing plate, 1/2 HP or larger and a hard wired power cord. Galvanized crushing plates will eventually rust and once that happens you will never get rid of the odor. Stainless steel does not attract bacteria which causes the odor. For the same reason it is always better to buy a dishwasher with a stainless steel tub.

Going on 29 years with an ISE 1.25hp all stainless interior garbage disposal. Keep the inside clean. Yes, use hot water once in a while to dissolve grease. I put everything in it including potato peels (lots of cold water!), bones, halved fruit pits, chopped corn silk, and egg shells. Turn it on w/ full water _before_ feeding it and let it run for 1 minutes with water after emptying. That's how to make it last. I wouldn't do bones and pits on an underpowered unit though.

Does anyone else wonder why parts that were made to make contact with water were not made to be water proof? I don't get it. There's a 100% chance that a disposal will make contact with water and cause rust. I wonder the same thing about hangers and shelves that are made for showers.

The cheap junk has always been made with either pot metal (zinc alloy) or cast aluminum grinding components. I had such an InSinkErator cheapie in the early 1980s that corroded through within two years of manufacture. I replaced it with a Sears unit that had a stainless steel grinding chamber, stainless steel grinding plate and stainless steel hammers. For all I know, it's probably still working after 35+ years. I replaced the leaking aluminum disposal in my current digs with an all-stainless unit around 1995, and it is still working fine a quarter century later. Even though the stainless steel units cost more, it is worth it for peace of mind and they end up costing much less per year of ownership.

Hey Jeff, great breakdown and explanation of what's going on with the leaking badger unit. I especially liked the tips about how long to run it and what temp of water - a LOT of people don't read the instructions!
One thing that would really improve the quality of your video would be to turn off autofocus on your camera. Autofocus works great for casual users taking snaps about town, but when you're trying to unscrew the housing it jumps focus to your arm instead of the action. When you were showing off the hole, a wire sticking up towards the camera stole the show. Use manual focus, check it before you start, and go!

One thing I’ve wondered is why can’t the manufacturers put in something so when a leak happens it either shuts the unit down or gives some type of warning. I’m not in the habit of looking under my sink constantly and having a finished basement underneath this could save major headache. I’d pay the extra cost for piece of mind.

Mixed up some jb weld Amd coated smoothly no sanding , I told myself this could work , that was 2 years ago , still working no leaks , you know I’m constantly checking it since it was a Hail Mary , who knows maybe I’ll buy a replacement this year ! Yes insinkerator also has several stainless steel models when you go to Home Depot there's like a half a dozen or so different models and it's the more expensive stainless steel models that I recommend everybody get. My 100 dollar 3/4hp Waste King has outlasted my 3 Badgers that were all over 100 dollars that rusted and leaked soon after the warranty period. Insinkerator is taking advantage of their past reputation and cashing out on a subpar product.

Along with the installation instructions was some use tips from the manufacturer. Same stuff mentioned here.Following them for the past 2 months the unit is working great.Yeah,I know it's only 2 months, but anything can happen in one time of use.But so far,so good, looking to have alot of years of great use.Note:Either have a plumber put it in if you don't want the hassle or do it yourself knowing what is going in. At least you know if and where you went right or wrong.Instructions are easy,as with anything else, read them THOURGHLY and be sure you understand them.Look at the unit as you are reading them so you know where the parts are they're talking about as you take the old one off,and you'll know where to put the new one,big point here,UNPLUG UNIT BEFORE TAKING IT OUT AND USE NEW PLUG PROVIDED.Saved me a call to the handyman and plumber and 911.Saved several hours and did the job in 30 minutes on Saturday morning in time for brunch.Spent more time going to The Home Depot buying it than actually putting it in.And the best part ,it ran perfectly 1st time I turned it on, SO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND THINK BEFORE YOU DO!.Yay!

Excellent instructional video and advice. These garbage disposals are very cheap and can last for 10-15 years. Its easier to just replace it yourself. But if its just a seal that has been breached, then I would use silicone adhesive that is impervious to hot/cold water and mold. You could probably sandblast the rust and caked-on food debris off of the spindle then spray a coating that would rustproof and protect the metal. You could probably add another 5-10 years to its life. Overall, a great DIY video....thank you for this !!

I still have my original GE Disposall from 1975. It is all stainless steel in the grind chamber and doesn’t look all rusted like that one. Also, my GE runs at a much higher rpm (8,000 I believe) which I think really helps it clean out faster than other brands? I hope it keeps going for me!

I live in an old apartment complex. I've had several leaks coming down through the my ceiling from the apartment above, over the course of several years, as well as having experienced, gurgling and foaming toilet bowl incidences, and sudden instances of dripping faucets...out of the blue. Suffice to say, I have endured too many leaky situations over the years...to feel settled about. Consequently....from time to time, the unit above me would summon a plumber, and things would be okay for a while, then before I knew it....another leak. Most recently....I was using the kitchen garbage disposal and had the light above the sink on as well. I have never experienced anything wrong with the operation of the sink or disposal, sans brownish water and the tainting of my water faucet with white spots. All has been functional aside from those two factors. All of a sudden....the disposal stopped working and the light went out. After some research, I found that both of the outlets...on the wall of the disposal and light....were out cold, meaning, no juice at all. Even after I had toggled the GFCI buttons, and checked the breakers, which were found to be in the correct position. Nonetheless, for good measure, I toggled the breakers as well. This happened on Wednesday. Thursday, I woke up to find that 'miraculously' not only did the disposal work, but the light above the sink and the two wall outlets....were working perfectly, and I hadn't touched a thing. Today is Friday, and the only repercussion from Wednesday's incident is that the disposal is still dripping. I have a coffee can underneath to catch all. It seems to be dripping at a reasonable rate and not pouring. The day that my outlets, disposal, and lights stopped working....I could hear that the upstairs unit was undertaking some kind of plumbing fixes. Being home, and the units being old and poorly constructed...I can 'hear' lots...For instance...it often 'sounds' like the water from upstairs coming down my wall between the bathroom and the kitchen. It's very loud, and was even shocked the first time I noticed it, and took a video, just to capture the loudness of the water I could hear from the wall. With all that I have relayed........Do you think that it's possible....that the plumbing issues coming from the unit above all these years, as well as their 'attempts' to fix the plumbing....probably with non-professionals....are affecting my unit. Please respond if you can. So....my story...is not a fun story. I seem to get the brunt of leak after leak...with a not-very-responsive landlord ( the unit above) that lives out of state and has, in the past, tried to make light of the leaking issues. My feeling is that he is renting as section 8, has owned the unit for many years, and obviously....does not care too much about the leaks I have experienced....as well the huge inconvenience...time and time again. What are your thoughts...about the continuous plumbing problems, and....my recent incident with the garbage disposal.....et al?????? Thanks so much...if you have a clue!!!!

Question: I have a garbage disposal that doesnt work purposefully as we dont use it. However, the 2nd side of the sink still gets dirty. Is it ok to simply clean the sink and let the water go down? Or will it cause "standing water"?

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 года назад +1

I would use a strainer, and empty the strainer into the trash, then rinse it. If you keep draining solids and food down the other sink, eventually they could clog the drain line somewhere down the line if there are any 90 degree turns. Then it costs about $150 to have a plumber com snake the line.
