Many Thanks to you for such a detailed tutorial for a first timer like me! I discovered our disposal was leaking-What a mess! Being a single mom I didn't have the means to pay someone. I started watching videos, many to be exact but NONE were as helpful or informative as yours! My son's ages 15&12 assisted and we did it! No leaks. Perfect! So grateful I found your video!🙂
a pro tip, if you happen to be shopping for cabinets. the style that has a vertical between the cabinet doors is a complete PITA to do anything with. get the kind like Bill has, where the doors just meet in the middle. that way you don't have to fight with an obstruction between the doors. also, every plumber I've seen install a disposal has always filled the sink basin and pulled the drain plug as part of their leak check. just running water down the drain only checks the bottom of the pipe, and when you dump a sinkload of water, it completely fills the pipe.
Yes, the dividers between cabinet doors are a complete PITA when doing something like changing out a disposal. Agreed about filling the sink tub. Also, run the dishwasher, and look for leaks or problems. Thanks Ken!
I removed the middle support on my sink cabinet and reinforced it with a hardwood, glue and screws. I also added a 1/4 inch plywood piece to o e of the doors to block the gap left by the support. 4+ years and it looks great and can easily access all the plumbing!
Awesome video this helped a ton. My garbage disposal went out so I went and bought the same exact garbage disposal. And it saved me a lot of time by watching this video.
I just did this today with my 13 year old son helping. I’ve never done any plumbing work before, but this just saved me about $350 (the cheapest quote I received for replacing my disposal, not including the price of the unit). $100, 30 minutes of work and we’re done. Thank you!
I just did it today and I had watched about five videos b4 I did. It might have taken a little longer but I am pretty sure I got it right. So far…no leaks. I did not replace the sink flange as it was not leaking from the beginning. I did not want to make the job anymore more complicated. I had my neighbor check my work as he is uber handy and he approved.
YOU SAVED ME A LOT OF TROUBLE at 3:10. I was getting ready to do this and I decided to watch your video to just get prepared so I could do it fast. I realized that I forgot to knock out the dishwasher plug! I would have been sorry if I forgot that step!
Thank you, Sparky Channel! Seeing the steps in your video is so much more helpful than just reading the printed instructions. I just installed my new disposal on my lunch break (and a little longer, don't tell my boss!). I am really thankful for your video. -Kate

Thank you so very much Sparky Channel! Your detailed video lent me both the courage and the confidence needed to tackle the installation of my InSinkErator on my own. You saved me a great deal of money and bolstered my ego for the day. Alas, my cats remained unimpressed……
This detailed tutorial and linked electrical wiring video were a life saver. Thank you for saving us 100s of dollars in plumbing costs !! I replaced Badger 1 with Badger 5XL with no need to change existing piping.
Thanks for this. The most difficult part of my simple install was aligning it to the old mount and I just did what you did here: used the new one to line it up exactly so and then it was super easy to do it in actual practice on the old mount. A little twist, screwed in the plate, plugged in the unit and done. I am perhaps the least handy person on the planet but you got me through it.
I'll be doing this operation in a few days, this was a great refresher! ( I've replaced a disposal before, once, and my memory is foggy on the exact steps...) Great idea on the car jack!
Thanks for this. I have installed garbage disposals overtime, but sometimes you forget. I watched another video that wasn’t as clear as yours. Then saw your video and at that point had everything done in five minutes. Thx

Thank you for your detailed and insightful video-it was a tremendous help in installing my new garbage disposal. I also watched another one of your videos where you demonstrated how to install the power cord, which was equally helpful. I truly appreciate the work you do. Thanks a hundred times over!
Thanks for this video. Mine was leaking so I got lucky and found a Badger 5xl inskinkerator at lowes on surprise clearance for $28.00!! After watching your video it took me 15 minutes to install the new one. Thanks!
YOU ABSOLUTE GENIUS, using a car jack. Thank you for that, and the close up of it going back on the mounting bracket. It’s too heavy for me to finagle while holding it, and I hadn’t thought abóut this problem, when I took it apart!! Brilliant!!
This helped out so much! installed a same brand option and linked up everyting to the other tubes etc. so it was great. Also, glad that you pointed out about tapping out the cap for the dishwasher tube otherwise that could be backed up. I def recommend getting the one that has the cord attached. Home depot by me didn't have that one with the cord attached so I went to Lowes and they had the same one but power cord attached. Way better to not have one more thing to deal with and hook up.
Great to hear! True, Home Depot doesn't carry the model with the cord built in. Amazon does though (see my link in the video description). Home Depot usually has the highest price on the disposals while charging $14 for an electrical cord. How were prices at Lowes?
I just want to thank you so much for this video. And the video for the wiring the garbage disposal. I was able to change out everything myself. I'm quite proud of myself and I have you to thank for it.
Thanks so much for posting this, very helpful. In my case the badger was flange was FROZEN onto its mounting. I finally gave up with the penetrating solvent, and brushed on a liberal amount of HCL around the perimeter, and will continue doing this until it either frees up, or totally DISSOLVES. Maybe replacement with yet another Badger is not such a good idea - there are other choices. Thanks again!
Have been replacing so many food waste disposals for clients and never knew they are available with power cord attached. Need to look for those as it would surely save me some time. Yes, yes, I always check polarity when replacing the power cord... With regard to the mounting assembly, I always replace it to give clients the full value of a new disposal, but that's just me. Anyway, I always love it when my favorite electrician expert turns to plumbing! I am glad you are branching out! 🙂
The weird thing is that Home Depot charges $14 for an Insinkerator brand cord while Insinkerator only charges $10 extra for a corded disposal! And the cord is so nicely sealed. Good job on checking for polarity. Many people feel that since the hot and neutral wires are both black, it doesn't matter. But it matters a lot, so great job. I actually worked as a professional plumber for a while. Electrical is a much better trade IMO though. Keep up the great work Mark!
I did not like I had to replace power cord. Was going to use the same one but it wouldn’t come out so I bought a replacement cord. It is dumb that both wires were black though. You had to check the feel on the wire sheathing to get the polarity right. That is dumb. I got it right though after verifying 3 times.
I have not even tried yet but I know I can do it after seeing this amazing instructional video. Thanks sir. Now off to buy a new one. Mine is leaking at the bottom
Thanks for video. Just replaced mine and yes, fast. Did not realize I could use the old parts…not leaking so went for it. So far so good. Appreciate it.
You might want to add putting a weight or something on the sink flange up top to keep it from shuffling while installing/ removing (and you're keeping the old drain flange). It it moves, you risk breaking the waterproof seal.
At my age I was trying to figure out an easier way of removing and and installing a garbage disposal. After giving it a lot of thought I came up with the idea of using a car jack. Ran into this video and to my surprise you bit me to the punch. I just had to run and show this to my wife. We laughed so hard 😂.Thank you so much Sparky for your great videos.@@SparkyChannel
