- PHEW it's been awhile again, sorry guys! My undergrad is finally over and im writing some sketches again! I hope I don't run out of names for these little ideas anytime soon lol. Just a daily reminder to us musicians, myself more than anyone: learning music is just a STRUGGLE sometimes. issa process. Breathe. All hail the mighty slow metronome. Take things one day at a time, be patient and try to have fun with it along the way. We've got this. More is on its way guys.
Much love 🍂

This is heartbreakingly beautiful. Takes me back to when I just started listening to math rock/Midwest emo, and how I was so entranced by that twinkly alternate tuning guitar sound. Bravo sir👊
Thank you so much for the kind words seth! 👊🏿
this is one of the best riffs ive heard on this site genuinely wow
Thank you!! I'm so glad you enjoyed listening :)
what’s ur bandcamp/spotify 🥺🥺🥺
fingerstyle is shockingly rare in the math rock/emo scene, this is really nice to see. sick stuff!
True, but when it's used, it's truly something magical.
Fingerstyle isn’t that rare
The hard cut got me at the end 😂 very nice piece, Derrick
Wow
always love how emotive you are while playing hehe, also i adore those harmonics at the end :) congrats and welcome back!!
Sounds dope! Loved this!
the joy that you have is contagious, keep doing whatever you're doing!
🔥🔥
ayeee this is fire
I came across this by accident then I realized there are no accidents. I was meant to hear this. Beautiful piece my friend.
i write my own stuff (though im not great) and sing over them sometimes. but i dig your energy the most. lets write some music together?
WOOOO!!! ICE PARTICLES MY NIGGA!!!
beautiful sound
You got a new sub! Thanks for the tab
Yvette Young would approve!
Foda
I wish to be as good as you one day bruh
Wtf, this is a gem, gonna learn it.
Title song?
Wow... Can't wait to see more new riffs 😁
It gives me a nostalgic feel. So beautiful.
sheeesh 🔥🔥🔥
thanks for that
This riff is why I bought a guitar again, hadn't played in 5 years.
That’s amazing news! I wish you the best of luck on your continued guitar journey!
Great job! Sounds a bit like rylynn (andy mckee). Should check that out as well if u guys dont know it
What tune?!
this is amazing. thank you for blessing my ears....as a guitarist myself that explores different tunings so much that I find it difficult to progress consistently, this was a lovely reminder to just explore the music, enjoy it every step of the way and take it slow. tysm much love
It definitely takes time! I really believe as long as we're able bodied we can do anything we put our heart and minds to!
Oh man :)
This was so incredibly beautiful. Going to be following very closely friend.
congrats on finishing undergrad!
Gorgeous 🙌🙌
wowowowowowow so good
A lil late, but my goodness this is impressive! I loved the chromatic motif you slipped in there, as I tend to struggle with that myself when I'm playing in FACGCE. Bouta take a look at the rest of your channel :D
Thank you so much! That motif is my favorite part of the riff too :D
And honestly writing arpeggios into music is a struggle sometimes! I’m suffering from the worst writers block lately, so frustrating!
This is really beautiful man, tried out the tuning myself recently and it sounds so nice! But yeah, this blew me away! :D
Lovely melodies 🫶
YEAH!
Good stuff!
Can you teach me this riff? I dont know how to read tabs and my listening is ‘ that great…please??
@@jeremylralte I’ve actually made a tutorial on my page if you’re more of a visual learner!
@@derrick.s going right into it!!! Thank you so much!!!
Man is just straight jamming out. Just so pure and inspiring 😊❤
Congrats on the undergrad completion! Very nice riff, definitely sounds like freedom to me. Also the message at the end of the description is great. Music learning is fr a process that can easily bog you down even if it helps you in the long run
I couldn't have said it better myself as far as music being a bit of a challenge to maintain at times, on top of everything else life tends to throw at you. I find it to be well worth the effort though. And I'm so immensely grateful for the the time I have to practice when I can!
Dear sir, your riff and energy is so refreshing to see!!!
keep going!
I will!
Love the energy and emotion when you play the guitar! and the riff was super cool too, it immediately captured my attention, you are amazing!
HECK yeah dude. This is so good. Congrats on graduating!
This is really nice - have you got any advice for writing in facgce? I have been trying for ages but have never got anything sounding good...
Hey there Tom! Honestly writing and composing is really hard. I'm facing a bit of writers block myself, but in the past I've found using my voice to sing and vocalize a melody, finding how to play that melody in the tuning in the correct key, and then teaching yourself how to play it through repetition and mindful practice are the best ways to go. Much easier said than done. Another thing-learning others pieces can help give you an idea if what is possible in the tuning
Ngl, many "midwest emo" style pop up for me but this one was the more solid to data. Congrats my dude, keep on playing!
This is very sick
This is actually such an inspiration for me to continue how to properly use this tuning
Just got reccd this, but congratulations man! Good shit on sticking through your undergrad and all that it brings!
This is great.
How happy playing makes you elevates it even more.
i felt every second of this. love the facials man, keep it up!
black boy joy in its highest form
SUPER Covet-y! I love it, and I can see how much you enjoy playing man. Great riff.
Congrats on finishing your degree! keep music with you wherever life takes you!!!

So fan-flippin'-tastic!!!
/certified facgce moment
That's really nice.
Dude that was amazing ❤
Congrats on graduating!! Definitely getting that super liberating vibe from this riff & super glad you're back riffing 😊
Thanks so much lauren! It's been a struggle lately to be completely honest but i think I'm beginning to make it!
man's killin it
nice, keep em coming
Love it man
So beautiful man!
Beautiful riff!
beautiful
Awesome stuff!!
You should try open d tuning!
DADAAD and DADGAD have to be my favorite tunings behind FACGCE
Great riff man!
Thank you for listening 😊
you are amazing
You're amazing too Ben!
Great but that sounds very much like Rylinn from Andy McKee bro
This is beautiful man, what type of songs/practice routines did you learn to get this good?
Thank you so much! So honestly a whole lot of what led to my progress was forcing myself to learn other math rock/Midwestern emo guitarists work, notably Yvette young's pieces she's put out in the past three years. I compose and play by ear; painstakingly slowly and almost always with a metronome. Once I find I can play at a certain speed perfectly a few times, say 50 bpm, I increase the metronome by 5-10 bpm. Doing this helps your brain process what exactly your fingers should actually be doing. Hint: use RUclips's slow function to watch what my (or any other guitarists) fingers are doing and play along! I also made a tutorial for this riff with a slow playthrough and free tablature. It's not perfect but I think it may be helpful!
Damn man that sounds brutal especially with how complex those songs are. I haven't found the grit or patience to learn songs like that, but hearing how good you sound makes me wanna push through and do it. Might just start with your tutorial.
@@tryptaminus you should! It's also important to realize that my videos are only how I sound a fraction of the time, I'm human and had to practice for weeks for this one to finally play smoothly! There's times I compare my work to that of other guitarists and feel endlessly inadequate; I'm no where close to the level of people like Ethan Hibbs, Andy McKee, Yvette young, and so many other insanely talented "mind-writer" musicians that just... are inspired and write banger after banger. Anyways there's value in the process of learning itself! You absolutely can do it man, take things slow and give yourself some grace along the way!
@@derrick.s The biggest barrier for me seems to be a mindset thing honestly. I still am stuck seeing guitar as a form of stress relief where I just noodle up and down scales and try to intuitively stumble on things that sound good. Practicing with intent seems like a whole different way to play, something that feels more like an actual grind. Were you ever at the same point?
@@tryptaminus dude it's insane how much I can relate, it's definitely easy for me to hit that point of feeling slightly burnt out and also frustrated with such little progress I perceive between noodle sessions. It's a mn expected feeling trying to play the type of music we're into (four basic chords in standard won't exactly do it), but unfortunately most truly awesome things we're able to require a certain amount of grit to achieve. Learning guitar is genuinely hard and kinda exhausting for me as well man, I really wanna emphasize that
this made me pick up my guitar thanks man
congrats, welcome back Derrick!!! you've been a huge inspiration to me ever since i've started playing in open tunings and got into guitarists like yvette young. i took a very long break from music myself and this inspires me to start writing more again soon and slowly get back to where i was with it. much love💙
It's never too late to get back into it man, you can do it! You might surprise yourself like I did! Best of luck!
@@derrick.s ayyy thanks a lot, let's do a collab together with my boys in EGR once i get there (we're a collective & indie label)
@@sixfeetunderbludude Ive been looking for some people to jam with. is there a way we could best dm?
