      It depends on what you want to do. If strumming quick and easy beautiful chords is the goal then you've nailed it! If versatility and growth as a musician over time is the goal then you might want to reconsider standard tuning.

    • @YodatheHobbit
      @YodatheHobbit 11 месяцев назад

      No, it's fucking cheating. Having fun with it is fine(same and drop D), but if a band were to use this tuning for ALL of their songs I would not respect them.
      It's like using a Chorus petal, ALL the time. The sounds of the octaves hide your mistakes.

    • @AimingWanderously
      @AimingWanderously 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@YodatheHobbit I don't think any band would use this ALL the time, like a band that uses drop D ALL the time, well, it's noticeable. Any alternate tuning is simply another color brush in the toolbox, it is fun to stimulate creativity. It is not cheating.

      Something I love to do with alternate/open tunings is playing standard chord shapes. you can get some gnarly sounding stuff that way. Some is dissonant of course (which I personally like) but you can also get some really big, harmonic chords if you move it to the right spot

      @@epiphonium I once had a book, "8848 guitar-chords", and ALL in "standard tuning".
      Some were "finger-breaking"..
      Anyway, I think the reason Joni Mitchell uses +50 tunings is that she's a Polio-survivor, so she can play some really "jazzy" chords, with relatively simple fingering .
      How she kept track of all those fingerings is still a mystery to me.
      Especially after she got her Parker Fly guitar, and let the Roland VG-8 guitar-synth take care of them.

    Its a great tuning for sure. What I struggled with is that I found myself writing the same (or at least very similar) sounding riffs over and over again. I wasnt really able to find different "moods" with this tuning. I always ended up with TMP-style themes. After a year I went back to Eb-standard and Drop Db which I found more versatile in the long run.

      I feel this. Every time I see a Midwest emo band, they're always messing around with tunings. There is usually a break or two in the set where they retune their guitar. Probably because you can only get so much out of this kind of tuning.
      It's great for what it does though!

    • @Gummmibaer
      @Gummmibaer Год назад +7

      @@chrismaghintayyeah you either have to bring a lot of guitars or retune which can really take some time and not every type of guitar string likes this. Breaking strings and being out of tune all the time are fatal in a live setup.

    When I saw Jackson Browne’s solo tour many years ago he had a grand piano, electric piano and 15 acoustic guitars onstage. He told us to just yell out our requests (very cool) and he would select a specific guitar to play. As a guitarist myself, I could tell he was using a variety of tunings, some of the same tunings in a variety of different keys. 15 AG’s on one long custom built wooden rack on wheels. It was so cool. You can hit great stuff 8 times in a row, and THEN you try something that WOULD work on a standard tuning and then there's HORROR! and because you've never been here before you don't know how to recover ! ONLY hurriedly barring the whole set of open strings will allow you to bail in a way that appears competent. It's a mine field, where 24 of the squares you could stand on are glorious and 8 of them will out you instantly as a morally corrupt, and CONTEMPTIBLE human being.

    If you want a 3rd, you can drop the G string (tuned to A3 in the video) down to F# or F. This would change the tuning to Dmaj9 or Dm/maj9 respectively.
    What I love about this channel, even though I don't play math rock (or even really want to do so), is that it gives me ideas. I play a lot of metal, with a progressive flair. And nothing says, "Interesting chord progression" like an alternate (math rock) tuning.

    My magical tuning for effortless beautiful chords is G-D-d-f-g#-b (fifth string is lowest). If one places fingers according to the recipe "Place index finger across 5 strings; cover 0-3 strings with the middle finger on the next fret, 0-3 strings with the ring finger on the fret above that, and 0-2 with the pinky on the fret above that, most arrangements will be usable chords. For some chords, extending the index finger to the sixth string would add a useful note, and for some it wouldn't, but simply strumming the top 5 strings is easier than having to use the left hand to mute a string that's strummed.
    I'm partial to my Flat Finger Tuning in particular, but the idea of swapping the bottom two strings would probably open up a lot of possibilities for other tunings as well. I'd be interested in knowing what you think.

    As mentioned by others, everything can start coming out very similar sounding with alternative tunings and if you dont want to dedicate a guitar to each tuning a la Sonic Youth then it can be a hassle retuning all the time. I suggest the spider capo which is a partial and customizable capo. My song As I Lay Dying on Soundclick uses a spider capo for the entire song set as a droning Em. Em and A are the most obvious applications of the spider capo but there are a lot of other things you can do with a little imagination. Plus, once you are done experimenting you pop off the capo and you are back to standard tuning. The spider capo also has the ability to mute certain strings which opens up a lot of other possibilities. BTW I dont work for spider capos. My first capo like this was actually by another brand called Third Hand Capo which is pretty similar, used to be a bit cheaper and might suit some people better.

    I had this tuning years ago but I forgot it..... now that you refresh my mind about it I would say to have one designated guitar for this tuning while you have other guitars in standard or open G or D with four guitars you could do a complete concert

    I’ve been using a similar one for a while, DADACE. I’ve never had a tuning that almost demanded tapping from me before that one.

    Your picture show a C natural instead of C#. Your original tuning with C and D made me think of Amin and Dmin9 but, the C# changes everything!

      I mean it’s a sus4 chord stacked on a major chord…so it’s always going to be brighter
      I bet if one tuned to the C natural, it would darken the mood

    BEBF#BE
    Bar for a 9th. Use one finger on an additional fret for a major or minor. Low B is available for metal. Drop to A if it suits you.

    A side note,..as a Tele player I’m always considering a thinline. May I ask which model you are playing? (PS my tenor guitar is tuned GDADor E and I have the same experience with ease of composing).

    For me, having a guitar with a clear, undistorted sound would have given a better representation of what the chords themselves sounded like.

    people that can tap like this frustrate me to no end, because i feel like it takes a level of dexterity i have never, and will never, ever, be able to achieve. i just do not understand how some people can literally get their fingers to do things that precise as if it's nothing. meanwhile i hear the chords and notes but can't make my hands do anything remotely complex.

    I love tunings like this. I like FACGCE a lot, but I tend to tune it down to EG#BF#BD# (EMaj9 I think?) so my strings don't hate me, lol.
