Yvette Young has become one of the best and most influential modern guitar players around today. Her technique, riffs and tone help make her unique, but her tuning is something I've never come across before and it sounds amazing.

Hey Rhett! What an honor. This is so incredibly sweet and informative. My friend from Caroline Guitar directed me to this video and I’m so grateful! Thank you so much for the kind and comprehensive analysis- so grateful and happy to be a part of peoples’ open tuning discovery/journey 🖤… and thanks for sharing and amplifying how guitar music can be so emotive and healing! You rule 🙌🏻
Thanks so much for watching Yvette! I appreciate the kind words.
Rhett, thank you so much for introducing me to Yvette and Covet. I’ve been binging their stuff since pretty much the hour this video went up, and have found their sound hugely inspiring.
Yvette, thanks for sharing your music with us all! You made a point in one interview I watched about how the “shred” culture around guitar is technically impressive, but not as rewarding musically without dynamics. I had to show that clip to my partner, who’s been listening to me say that for years, like “see, she gets it!” I’ll do my best to get to Covet’s next show in central Florida to support you guys, and I’m already saving up for my own slime green telman. Such a cool guitar.
You are amazing Yvette!
Merci beaucoup Yvette. You have an amazing sound and I wish you all the best.
BTW I have seen a piano player who picked up the guitar and amazed and amazing band. Dweezil Zappa had on Rachel Flowers to play keyboard (her instrument of choice) on Inca Roads and then do a guitar solo on Montana. It would by great if you could collaborate.
Yvette you radiate joy and beauty in your playing. You are such a talented individual❤
Never Meant by American Football was the song that taught me this tuning. the way Yvette uses it makes it sounds completely different from the typical midwest emo players and i’ve always found that really impressive. it’s so easy to sound “samey” in open tunings
Never meant is FACGCe Yvette is usually in FACGBe or FACGAe
@@隠れたyeah i noticed that i’m gonna have to try those out sometime!
@@brandonxpagano they are interesting, I prefer FACGCe over them myself. But to be fair Yvette does have multiple songs in FACGCe as well as the other two tweaked tunings
@@brandonxpagano also when American football play never meant live they now play it a half step down from FACGCe which is also a fun tuning
My fave is facgce but half step down…….
Transit used it on my favorite album (listen and forgive)
btw .... one of the "original masters" of alternate tunings was Joni Mitchell. She blew everybody's mind back in the day (my day) with dozens of alt tunings. There was this film clip from a movie where a bunch of people were at Mama Cass's house in Laurel Canyon .... David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Jackson Brown .... Clapton was there too, visiting. He was watching Joni play some stuff, and his jaw literally was in his lap. It was hilarious.
She uses so many, they just change the tuning digitally, lol
I would love to see that movie, what is the title?
@@j3ffn4v4rr0 Laurel Canyon. It’s a documentary on RUclips. About three hours and well worth the time.
She actually used so many tunings because she had polio as a kid and has weaker hands than average
You beat me to it.
Yvette is the full package, great musicianship, sense of melody, composition and technical prowess. Glad to see her getting more recognition, she and Covet most definitely deserve it
And a decent human being to boot!
Easy on the eyes as well. 😉
The genuine nature of your sentiment towards "another golden age of guitar players" is felt. These are some truly inspiring people in the world of guitar.
And Rhett steps into the Midwest emo vibe.... I'd be curious to hear you and Rick Beato do a deep dive on this genre together. She is an absolute standout talent shedding light on a 25 year old genre that's finally surfacing.
You nailed it with the modern young players and their approach. My 12 year-old son started a couple of years ago getting into Hendrix and all of the classic "guitar gods." Now he is learning this tuning and is a huge Yvette and Tim Henson fan. He and his generation have now nearly a hundred years of style to draw from and it's awesome to see how approaches have changed + the great music being made by artists like Yvette pushing the medium forward.
Yvette Young is definitely one of my favorites too. Her piano and violin playing is incredible too! She’s a triple threat!
that's one helluva name you have ;-)
She's also really good at painting. All of her album covers and even guitars are painted by her.
The way her tapping leaps out of the chord shape and back in again is like a bird taking flight. Amazing and passionate.
The face you make at 7:32 is the biggest compliment a musician can give. I also made the same face at the melody. Gosh, her melodies are so beautiful.
The old stank face of approval! 😊👍
She's such an incredible talent. The expressiveness in her playing is remarkable. Thanks for shining a spotlight on players like this.
Yvette is a blessing to this world, and my discovery of her led to my discovery of the tuning she uses. Very inspiring stuff
Thanks for featuring Yvettes playing. Shes truly original. Got to see her w Covet and spent the whole time with my jaw on the floor. And just watching your facial expressions as you watch her play says it all. Its like watching a magician up close. You can watch every bit and still not know how shes doing what she does.
I’ve been following Yvette the past 3-4 years now. She is really creative in so many ways. Piano, violin, guitar, and she’s a fantastic artist too! And she’s the best at using effects to truly add to the music, not just layer something on top for the sake of it. I can’t wait to see what she does 5-10 years from now.
>been following for 3-4 years
>still misspells her name
ok buddy
Her time feel on fast tunes reminds me of EVH even though the sound and the way they play are completely opposite. But right in the pocket.
She is a classical pianist and can play her guitar riffs on piano, rips it up! You should feature her band!
I've heard Yvette Young been described as the musician's musician. Watching you being blown away by her playing more or less proves it!
Rhett! Thanks for sharing this man. Her playing (this tuning) opens up doors on the instrument and it’s invaluable. She’s an amazing artist and player! :)
Great vid and breakdown of Yvette's playing. She's really taking it to the next level. Your Tidal-caster(?) sounds great, too! Beautiful instrument. Chris and Matt do great work.
This super compressed tap tone is just another NEW form of stringed instrument. Sounds entirely unique. God bless all players of stringed instruments and the talented people that can make them sound amazing.
Brilliant video Rhett. Thanks for introducing me to Yvette's amazing music. Your music is beautifully expressive and melodic, @yvetteyoungmusic!
Saw her “Midwest emo on crack “ riff, been a fan ever since!
Everybody here needs to listen to the band toe right this freaking minute.
If you like Yvette then you’ll like her biggest influence, which is toe.
Stumbled over her youtube a while back and fell instantly in love with her music. She has that deep, intricate and rare ability to turn notes into poetry. Her playing simply touches something deep within me. Mezmerising. Beautiful.
I got to see Covet with Hail The Sun and Polyphia back in 2018, such a great show. I had never heard of them at the time and Yvette's guitar playing absolutely blew my mind
Wow! this young lady is a refreshing change of pace or, more accurately, sound. Digging the guitar Rhett, love the mashup of the P-90 in the neck and the Tele pick-up in the bridge.
Wonderful stuff! Thanks for introducing me / us to her work - she is an original for sure.
This is a style I have heard a few newer bands like Chon, Plini, and Intervals experimenting with that I find amazing and extremely satisfying to listen to. It is so advanced, and so melodic, and musical. I had not heard of Yvette Young before now and look forward to hearing more of her playing. This final comment you made about a new age in guitar. I totally agree. I feel so conventional now with all that I've been doing throughout the years, but it's nice to be inspired to reach further.
She's my facebook friend and way back when shes starting saw her progressing so much and succeeded after more than a decade. So proud of this girl. ❤
A refreshing and inspiring video. Thank you!
This dude talked so much and ain’t said nothing
Final boss yapper edition
Rhett, the look on your face reminds me so much of when I first started watching guitar players on RUclips. The shaking your head in disbelief, absolutely engrossed in what you're seeing.
Just when you think you've seen it all, someone like Yvette comes along and breaks new ground and does something totally unique.
She’s awesome and definitely at the top of this style. This type of playing is a whole scene though, many have mentioned American Football as a big influence. Make sure to check out Tiny Moving Parts as well.
It's cool to see you swept away by a style. I never quite got anyone to join me on my hype train when I discovered Yvette a few years back, so it's also just nice to feel vindicated in my excitement lol
Yvette's music is so magical and melodic. It's this ever evolving concept and it comes off as so effortless. Then you see her do it and realize it's WAY harder than it sounds. To be that musical and fresh and make it sounds like it's happening in the moment is special.
Thanks for highlighting Yvette. She’s an amazing player, and Covet is a fantastic band.
I had an opportunity to see her play last week. It was amazing! She’s so talented and original. I had a chance to chat with her after the show for a bit and she is such a humble and radiant individual. I was just thinking about her playing right before I found this video. Thanks as always for the great content man!
Such a breath of fresh air. Yvette has a fantastic sense of harmony and melody, love the sonicscapes she creates, very inspiring.
Thanks for turning me on to her music! She is a gift..
Really inspired playing on this one, tone sounded otherworldly and huge. Great stuff!
Excellent video Rhett!
That tuning is inspired by the band American Football and they are also one of the pioneers of that kind of guitar playing.
Check TTNG they also have great music and wild open tunings
Way to keep the channel interesting! I love the standard equipment / rock music focus . . . but mixing in some music that is a little (or a lot) different is refreshing. Fun. Keep it up!
This is epic ….Hands down one of the best Rhett Shull videos ….ever. Loved this …..this tuning config is amazing
This rules. As someone who’s known about Covet/ Yvette for years but was put onto Madi Cunningham from your last video, I hope the same happens for anyone hearing about Yvette for the first time here 🤘🏽
When she pays “Good Morning” I can hear Matt Berninger singing over it. Something in the vein of “About Today”
I've had the pleasure of talking to Yvette online. She is not only an amazing player, but a wonderfully genuine person, completely humble and interested in everything and anyone around her. A delightful woman.
Tbh the first 2 riffs of A Map, A String, A Light are some of the best examples of this open tuning and I loved learning them.
The classical piano influence shows on the way she incorporates Arpeggios in most of her playing! I think Yngwie Malmsteen pioneered that approach to guitar back in the 80's although in a very different style! Cool!
Alternate title: Rhett learns about Midwest Emo.
This is very cool.
I wish you had done this with a lot less effects on your guitar so we could hear more of the nuances of that tuning ☺️
Nice to see the love for Yvette. I can understand getting lost for an hour watching her play. She is just really fun to watch, playing her songs, but especially watching her create music.
Yvette and Covet were in Columbia last night, and that face you’re making at 5:57 - that’s the face we all were making
Amazing tuning and talented player! Love it! 😮
I'm so glad that Math Rock and Midwest Emo tunings and playing styles are coming into the limelight.
Cool to hear this. It reminds me of Stanley jordan and the first time I saw him live in the late 80s. Blew my mind that tapping
1:10 - me, every single time I watch one of her videos. 🤣
Same!
Stoked she is getting more recognition, seen Covet several times live and they never disappoint.
It's a shame they broke up
@@iceman5117 they didn’t break up! The drummer and bassist just wanted to explore different creative avenues. Different people stepped in to help with this new era of the band.
thank you, rhett, for introducing us to ms young. love it!
E standard heads discovering FACGCE will never stop being funny. Welcome to the team!
Absolutely beyond! Tears in my eyes awesome
Man, really dig your shining a light on other amazing players you’ve found out about and sharing with us! Just really appreciate your whole positive vibe too. Keep going, man!
Hi Rhett, great segment. For more alternate tunings check out Ralph Towner.
Nimbus 12 String
c/C, d#/G, a#/C, f/D, a/g, d/d
Icarus 12 String
d/D, g/G, d/D, g/G, a/a, d/d
Distant Hills 12 & 6 String
Eb, A, D, G, B, E
I'm going to have to try this tuning on my coodercaster style tele. I can think back to growing up in the 90's, hearing a revolutionary player, and then scrambling to find any possible recording of any quality. I remember doing this when I "discovered" Michael Hedges, Stanley Jordan, etc etc. Now we have the benefit of HD videos and analysis of technique, we are spoiled with how accessible all of this is.
This is a fantastic tuning indeed - played with it two minutes in and founds bach's cello suite 1 prelude straight away - bonkers! Open f 6th, open c on 4th, open a 2nd, open f 3rd, open a on second obviously not in g min but hey it's deep like cello ... bingo the rest follows easily
Ultimately all stuff in this tuning begins to sound the same. Joni at least would, with her tunings, complete the music with fab lyrics and great singing.
Now that you’ve discovered Yvette you gotta check out American Football, You Blew it, and Pool Kids!
Rhett, if you’re new to the Math Rock Scene, look into the bands that heavily inspired Yvette’s playing. Bands like American Football and Toe, just those two alone were the forefathers of the genre and have heavily used the play style/tunings you’ve touched upon.
Minus the bear, TTNG, giraffes? Giraffes!
Any Rob Crow?.. anyone?
It’s a happy wonder how musicians can expand what can be done on a guitar. It’s a tribute to both the artists and the versatility of the instrument.
Alternate tunings is one of the greatest things about guitar. Opens up entirely new worlds. Using a capo on standard tuning alone does that. I wish I had a better grasp of the fretboard, especially with single strings tuned differently. like EADGAE or EADGBD but even that is hard cause you always have to keep that one string in mind that is detuned. it's a journey, i guess... but i do envy people who have nailed alternate tunings on guitar and just play most amazing things. from folk to prog and everything inbetween
Yeah I've been following her for a little while now, convinced she really is the Next Thing kind of player. Amazing player.
Something i feel most musicians and artists in general know this, but i noticed it really hard this video as my reactions were so similar to Rhetts, its this idea, that will all the negativity and nonsense going on in our lives, theres something about artists and musicians that makes all that go out the window and its really beautiful. There was this sense of purirty in this video that made that come to mind.. but anyways , keep up the amazing work my dude
Wow amazing musician, and this tuning is totally dope to mess around with! Thank you sir and ma'am.
I finally saw your signature guitar bro! Really nice!
Yvette is one of the most inspiring guitarists of all time.
Thank you for sharing, loved it
That's incredible!
Very cool, thanks for sharing. Cheers.
I saw them play this past weekend. Even live the soundscaping, writing, and playing are incredible and emotional
p.s. - I believe she was using an AC30 on stage
The reason the FACGae tuning is so interesting is it forces you out of the same ‘ol pentatonic “box” that makes so much of guitar music sound “bluesy”. You can’t rely on those time tested “licks” so you have to focus on novel melodies.
It always so interesting how ppl react to this style of playing and the tunings, I don’t ever play in standard so this is natural for me
Went deep into Yvette and Covet during the pandemic (and had the pleasure of watching her play live when things first started opening up), so I'm stoked to see her represented here!
I stumbled on to Yvette’s music from the YT algorithm. Following since. She’s amazing. Another unusual tapper (however calling Yvette ‘unusual’ is far to bland an adjective) is Evandro Tiburski of Overdriver Duo. Look for their version of “Beat It”.
Rhett finally getting into math rock! Yvette is amazing the guys at Chon are top notch as well!
What I love about this new gen of guitarists is that it's not all old dudes with Les Pauls - it's young people, women, kids making cheap axes sound amazing. Keep it up!
Yes her playing is like a pianist holding down the sustain pedal throughout the song. Very impressive and interesting.
Sounds to me like she's covering ground that Joni Mitchell tread back in the 60s regarding her approach to guitar tunings and composition. From what I understand, Joni would hear a melody or a modal line, tune her guitar in a way that gave her access to that 'mood', and then compose her masterpieces in this way, using tunings that had never been visited before and open up whole new universes of available tonal combinations on the fingerboard; comparing it to her piano keyboard in extended range. She then invented a method by which she could keep track of all those new tunings (and songs) by using the intervals between the strings. She can explain it much better than I can. Anyway, it is said that Crosby, Stills, Young, Nash, Taylor, and the rest of the 'Canyon crew' were blown away by her virtuosity, to the point of being humbled and also inspired; and you can hear them all starting to use more broad and creative approaches to tuning and composition, much like Rhett is doing here today.
Good on ya Rhett, for finding and recognizing this player and directing the attention of your subscribers to check out her stuff.
I wonder if there is any connection to Don Ross somehow. One of my favorite tunings of his is FACGCE. Tuning the E up to F is a little less trivial than tuning B to a C, and I have tuned to A instead many times experimenting. Either way it is a wonderful tuning and I have written 5 or 6 songs in it over the course of 15 to 20 years. I would highly recommend the tuning with the B to C as well and for anyone to check out Don Ross as he is an endless example of alternate tunings put to real practical usage. I almost forgot, "The First Ride" by Don Ross is a good example of practical usage of a similar enough tuning for anyone having trouble wrapping their heads around it. One of the tunings major strengths is basing the song in a key that is higher like C rather than the lowest note available.
Great video! Rhett now hit me with a CHON Analysis something Rick hasn’t even done yet haha similar styles and very creative these are some great new sounds. Great for learning that rhythmic note separation that creates such a different feel. Yvette has a great touch. Time for you to check out the new up and comers. Honestly I Love the vintage tones just as much as the seemingly stereo like tones of these newer guitarists. I all has its place. Check them out Rhett!
Love this series! Turned me onto cool artists every time.
y’all gotta listen to Toe and their album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety. She mentions Toe as an influence as well.
Rhett, you and Yvette are my favorite guitar players.
Her use of the open strings (mostly the lower strings) to create quartal harmonies is just fascinating
This is pretty cool, even though I've never really been a fan of this style of guitar. I've seen dozens of people play in this kind of style over the last decade or more, and i always want to like it, but it never quite jives with me. Its like you said, its piano like. Im not into that when it comes to guitar.
She's obviously amazing at what she does dont get me wrong though. It's just never been my cup of tea. However, i will say, the most IMPORTANT piece of information in this video IS the 'alternate tunings'. Honestly, if it weren't for those, i might have given up on guitar the last couple years, even though ive been playing for over 20 years now. Playing in standard/drop D & C tunings just got so old to me. Felt like i couldn't create anything that sounded fresh or original anymore. Everything sounded done before, or re-hashed.
As soon as i started messing around with weird alternate tunings, my life changed, and my guitar playing actually became better and way more interesting, I'll never look back. I haven't played in stand tuning now in over year. I've played now in over 20+, maybe even 30, different tunings, and I can't get enough of it. So that's the biggest takeaway of this video imo. Its actually even sorta hard for me now to listen to other people on YT play in standard tuning lol. Btw, just wanted to say its always awesome when you and JHS collaborate. Keep up the good work
I have to try this thru a CLEAN AmpliTube 5 setup with the Fulltone Tri-Chorus engaged. :)
Wow!!! Another new guitarist I never knew until this video. Wasn't it Joni Mitchell who invented over 50 different tunings for the guitar? A lot of her music was in tunings I've never heard of until a short time ago. I shall now check Yvette Young and try to learn something new and different. Thanks Rhett, love your vids.
This is an eye opener for me.
Thank you for doing this video! She is amazing. I listened to her music a lot during the worst of the pandemic, and it really helped get me through. She also has a wonderful voice, but she doesn't sing much. Her song "Parachute" is a favorite--both the acoustic and electric versions. Both are on youtube. Highly recommend them.
Her solo albums are amazing too. Map, a string, a light pt1 and pt2 really get me through the rough days
@@iceman5117 Thanks for the recommendation! I will check them out.
I’d be curious to know if she uses other non-standard tunings. She is a great talent. Thanks for this Rhett. Keep up the good work. Your channel is great!
Listening to her talk about her technique it all sounds so easy...err...trying to play anything even remotely like her is nigh on impossible. True artistry and innovation. Just perfect.
Saw her last night, such a cool show! first time I had seen a math rock style band live and they crushed. Yvette shreds!
Welcome to Math Rock/Midwest Emo, FACGAE + FACGCE are two fantastic sounding tunings that are incredibly easy to swap between.
