@jackstethem2569 thanks for the feedback! You can play either the Am7 or A7 to transition to the Dm9 chord. The Am7 is in the key and the A7 is a secondary dominant so it's out of the key. It just gives a slighlty more spicy sound because the listener isn't expecting to hear that chord placed there typically. Hope that helps!
