Well in my opinion the temptations was definitely the main attraction for motown for many years. With that said the four tops took the spotlight from everybody when they were hot. So this can be a hard decision to make. The temptations had many lead singer's. The four tops stayed true to form throughout their entire career. According to levy stubbs all of the four tops could have taken lead. Levy was a great R&B singer. The rest of the group was In perfect harmony.

I’ve always admired Levi Stubbs for staying loyal to his singing brothers.
He could’ve had a very successful solo career,
but he rode with the group until the very end.
They’re the only Motown group that stayed together with all of their original members until death.

Fun facts; Levi Stubbs had a brother in The Contours and his 1st cousin was Jackie Wilson. Music runs deep in their family. Berry Gordy also wanted Levi to become a single artist but he remained loyal to his Bros The Tops.BG also wanted Levi to play Louis Mckay in Lady Sings The Blues before offering Billy Dee the role.RIP🙏🏽🙏🏽

I have backed them up now since 1996. Lawrence was the lead singer when they were in Harlem, NYC singing jazz in clubs before they moved back to Detroit. When they started doing R&B again, Levi went on to be lead singer. Their very 1st album back at Motown Records was a big band style album. There are photos archived of that recording session with a full big band in the basement of that house! That album is still on Apple Music and other services still to this day.The recording is called "Lost and Found: Breaking Through".

Renaldo "Obie" Benson witnessed in 1969 police brutality & violence against protestors during a protest held by Anti-War Activist. Upset by what he witnessed he discussed what he saw with his friend & songwriter Al Cleveland, who wrote & composed a song reflecting Benson's feelings and concerns. In 1970 Benson presented the song to Marvin Gaye, who tweaked it by added his own lyrics and a new melody. Gaye was going to give the song to The Originals but after his brother and others returned home from the Viet Nam War. The Classic Five of The Temptations: Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams; David Ruffin, & Melvin Franklin, all could sing Lead & each did with the exception of Otis Williams to my remembrance. The 4 Tops on the other hand, had only 1 primary Lead Singer who was Levi Stubbs.

Four Tops had uncanny ability to "cover songs," resulting in masterpieces like Walk Away Renee, Mac Arthur Park, Do What You Gotta Do, and California Dreamin' (with Lawrence Payton singing lead). Lets say this, Levi's voice was amazing. That man could make you feel the song. He could have gone on his own, he stayed a Four Top forever. I don't think the Four Tops were given the same opportunities that other groups were given at Motown. How can you not feel the soul of the Four Tops. And the loyalty. You don't see that. I can sing better than you or I look better than you before the camera. I don't give a crap what you look like. I want to feel the song. I want to feel down to my bones. The Four Tops were so unique. They stayed together. They all made the Four Tops what they were. They all had their own personality and gave it in every song. I had the pleasure of seeing them in person back in the late 80's. Not something I will ever forget.

There is no formal criteria to determine which group, the Four Tops or the Temptations, is the best. Unlike, a sports team that wins a championship and is considered the best team in the sport that particular year. Which group is the best is a matter of opinion. You may think the Four Tops are the best but you're not going to convince Temptation fans and by the same token Four Tops fans will never be persuaded that the Temptations are better. This is a friendly debate or argument that will never be settled to everyone's satisfaction. So, it comes down to your preference. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. So for me it's the Four Tops. In addition to their music, I like their continuity over all those years. That was something I always admired about them unlike the Temptations who had numerous personnel changes. One more thing, the Four Tops had more crossover hits than the Temptations. Now watch all those Temptation fans go ballistic. Lol.

Excuse me but, as great as the Four Tops were they could NEVER top the TEMPTATIONS! The TEMPTATIONS with David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, & Otis Williams were not the greatest Black group, nor the greatest vocal male group! The Classic TEMPTATIONS were thee GREATEST SINGING, DANCING, AND BEST DRESSED group in the history of recorded music!!! And I loved the Four Tops & the Miracles! But the GREATEST singing miracle that I have ever heard & seen was the Classic TEMPTATIONS! Ain't No Bout-a-doubt-it!!! 😁❤

All the Motown singers and the Funk Brothers were excellent in every way: talented in music, manners, even in outward appearance. They look[ed] better than today's musical artists, which is rap and hip-hop. That is not my speed like the old, original and authentic music.

On a good night the spinners will out do both groups. The spinners are most underrated groups of all time. Spinners were dealt a bad hand at motown so they departed motown even though the spinners were at a different label before the group went to motown. As great as the spinners during the the late 60s but they dominated the 70s even though they were around sense the late 1950s yes before temptations the 4 tops the dramatics yes the spinners were older. There was a time in music history were the spinners were better then the 4 tops and temptations.

The Temptations are better for sure. I've seen both groups every year for the last 15 years or so. They are both great, but the Temptations seem to have unlimited hit songs. One strange thing though: over the last three years, for some reason, the Temptations have opened for The Four Tops, and I had always assumed that the better/more marketable group would end the show. And it used to be the Temptations that ended every show.
