I saw him live that year in Mannheim Germany. The concert was among the best I have ever seen. I wish he'd come play Helena Montana (but give me advanced notice so I could save what are sure to be seriously overpriced tickets). But it'd be worth it.

Ahhh … good old fashion rock and roll songs with heart … the thing that made John was he was himself … there was no us and them … their was no our country your country … no coulors … it was for people who enjoyed it … Thanks John … still listening to you and I’m gonna be 55 this year … play brother play … we need songs like this and musicians like you now … 🤙🙏❤️🇨🇦

Beginning of Freshman yr of high school in September 1986. In a brand new city & school when the afternoons were still sunny & warm in Central Illinois. I'd get home from school, turn on MTV and they always played this video. Every time I hear this song, I go back to that sunny warm September afternoon 3:30 pm in 1986.

I don't remember what it was called, but there was a Mellencamp documentary that profiled this video. The story behind it was interesting. A real poor place in the south, and actual people who lived there. I wish I could remember what it was called so I could look it up. Might have even been about the backup singers. Bottom line, it was a fine moment.

John is one of the best songwriters of his generation. What a brilliant metaphor for this song comparing paper in fire to the American dream going up in flames. Notice the jukebox @ 2:34 in the background is the same one used in the Cherry Bomb video. PS. Loved the cute old man @3:00 he's really feeling it

Funny, I grew up listening Mellencamp. Many of his songs including this one showed me as a farm boy that people of different color can get along and ... enjoy each others company. He is the only performer that I know that speaks the soul of the American farmer. I grew up on a farm in Indiana; now live in NYC. Most of my inspiration to know more about the world and people of other skin tones came from Mellencamp and Lionel Ritchie.

"Paper in Fire" (the song and this video): impactful, loving, charming, and beautiful. "Check it Out" is a monumental, universal, anthem... but also a deeply personal, down-to-the-bone prayer, to get some insight into the life that you are living, that you willingly took on, and that you love, but that you don't quite understand.
