One of the most underrated singers/songwriters ever. You don't really think much about him, but when you look through his catalogue you see great song after great song, this one being a prime example.
JC Mellancamp doesnt get enough credit. Fantastic 80s music that í can still relate to at nesrly 50. Yes Í still punp up the völume when Í hear JC Mellancamp, Í still feel like dancing or cruising on the highway through the town.
For me, Mellencamp really captured the essence of the America Midwest and shaped it into musical form and this song is probably my favorite of lots great songs from him
I've been a fan of John 'Cougar' Mellencamp from the very beginning(that's my teens in the 80's) and still singing and dancing to his songs now that I'm in my fifties.
25+ years ago, JCM & the band did a special VH1 from the backyard property of a contest winning homeowner on Grand Island, NY between Buffalo and Niagara Falls... my home town now. It was said back then it could be heard all over the island, which is not small, and that people were sneaking their way into the yard to catch some of the show.
Takes me back to my high school days. Young, carefree, and not a worry in the world. It’s too bad we don’t recognize the specialness of a moment in time when it’s happening. I would love to go back and really appreciate the way it was back then.
"Scarecrow" is one of my favorite albums of the 80's. John has never been fully appreciated for the great songwriter that he is and Kenny Aronoff is one terrific drummer with a very distinctive style
Saw him years ago in Berks County, PA. Do you know the backup singer he had was with him at that time for 20, 25 years. Loved her voice. Used to know her name slips my mind at the moment. Just an awesome back-up over the years. Johnny, some knew I used to get into your music. When I was about to kick up some dirt, rip off some donuts. I would say its, " Johnny Time." Love you John. Thanks ! Thank you eighties groups. I mean it, Thank you John.

I got to see him live in about 2012. I LOVE a great deal of his music. But I think that night he was a little 'flat'...you know, not 'energized' enough. He went through the motions and playing, but he didn't seem to have the energy that night like his songs do. I' am a great fan and don't hold this against him at all. "Scarerow" was the LP that broke him thru for me. "Lonely Ol' Night" is on that great LP.
That's awesome! Come by and check my covers out. just put a couple of his up recently. 1 today. Love to hear your feedback. John & I share the same state. 50 miles apart & I've never met him. lmao one day though :-)
As I approach the end of my years on this rock, I look back at all the highlights. I have many. I could fill books with the amazing artists who invented brilliant things during my years here. Well, this song was one of them great moments. Even if few remember, this was gorgeous when it happened. I thank Mr Mellancamp for this moment. John should you read this, you affected my time here and I love you for that. You were and will always be wonderful. I will buy a ticket to see you in the afterlife, amigo.
John Mellencamp is such a part of my childhood. For frame of reference I grew up as a Black kid out in the country. Whatever came on the radio was the only option. Like Brother Ray Charles said all music has its own soul and Mellencamp fit the bill. I like this lyric of the song "Radio playin' softly Some singer's sad sad song He's singin' about standin' in the shadows of love" which is a reference to one of my favorites Levi Stubbs of the 4 Tops I do voice work as did the late great Mr Stubbs. The only thing that would make this song better is to have named the 4 Tops or Levi by name
Yes! Just like Springsteen's "Born in the USA", or The Doobie Brothers "What a Fool Believes". People think they're great pop ditties but once you really listen to the lyrics you understand the sadness underneath.
Nothing 'glamorous' here (that we see in other then contemporary videos), just simple, friendly folk at a country fair/midway.....and that makes the video and song all the more compelling.
This song evokes watching late in coming sunsets, looking down Kirkwood in the summer, downtown nighttime looking like an auto show, humidity you can wear like a puffer jacket, no students back in town to ruin it. Yet.

This vid is a piece of art. Every scene that flashes seems eerily familiar. It fits the song perfectly, too, that "lonely all night" sensation we've all felt. This period was Mellencamp's high point, when he could make you rock and think at the same time.
CMT used to play this video of “Lonely Ol’ Night” by John Mellencamp on its program “Jammin’ Country”. I still enjoy this video and Mellencamp’s music of the heartland.

When my sister Arlene and Irene joined the Job Crops training. They got sent to Texarkana Arkansas. A Navajo person go to a place like Texarkana Arkansas is a shock to them. Marlene Toledo Grayson
What's amazing about so much of John's music like this is that it doesn't sound like typical 1985 pop radio music (a lot of 50s rockabilly and country influences on albums starting with Scarecrow) but whatever it is, it's so catchy. I think it helped that he had a real social and political message to his music, and it wasn't just for fun.
Great song! Great vid! The fair scenes remind me of my trips to the Delaware State Fair in Harrington (whose 2023 edition is going on as I type [I'm a lifelong East Coaster who's rarely crossed the Appalachians (blush)] ). Unfortunately I've been no closer to Indiana than CVG (Cincinnati/NorKY) Airport which is a few miles from the Hoosier State.
When I look back, I am just so grateful to have been alive at that time and experienced all of the incredible music as it was coming out. MTV was relatively new and cool and instrumental in exposing people to a lot of music - more than any one radio station/format could have.
@@user-cg7dg7uv8f And, for me....it started with the song "Jack and Diane" which sounded alot different than anything being recorded at the time (where there were quite a few influences from synthesizer's to over produced walls of sound). He kept it simple and talks about how his record company was gonna drop him and didn't like the album "American Fool" because it didn't sound like all the top 40 hits being produced. He always liked a simpler composition with acoustic guitar.
@@jimbeam7160 - I have no idea why you responded to my comment - your comment has zero to do with what I was talking about. I was commenting on what an incredibly fertile era that was for great music of all kinds, and how a lot of it was introduced by MTV.

JCM had some great hits in the 80's, but in my opinion this is by far his best written song and one of the more underrated rock songs of al time, no bullshit, it cuts right to the core

This song literally brings a lump to my throat. When I was a teenager living in Calgary, Alberta, I had, and sadly missed, a chance to see John Cougar Mellencamp. One of life's regrets, I'm afraid. Nostalgia at its best.

This has been my favorite Mellencamp song for years. The soul, the tone, the backing vocals, the structure, lyrics, its a masterpiece. My favorite video of his too. Love black and white.

Francisco Castaneda I always felt JCMs guitarist sounds a bit like Keith Richards style but a bit more southern American tone to the guitar. Maybe I'm wrong.
This song takes me back to when I was 7 years old. Had this song on a 45 record and played it all the time on my stereo. As an adult, still have an appreciation for Mellencamp's music and probably hear "Hurts So Good" on the radio several times a week. His music has staying power. Going to see him in concert for my first time in the spring and SO SO excited!! I hope he plays this song. I may get weepy because of being so nostalgic...thank you for reading.
"They" do, but it doesn't make the top 40. People that listen to top 40 want beats, bass, danceability, and they don't care about the songwriting or even if the musicians or singers are any good. In fact, most top 40 now doesn't contain any real instruments or singing at all, instead it's mostly rap and autotune. This comes from a different era.
Poor Johnny Boy still doesn't get any recognition or plaudits for his supreme volume of work, love this cat, I grew up on his music, it's engrained in my DNA, I'm still here loving every day, especially when I listen to any classic of Mellencamp's!
when you can appreciate music and live in that magic when you hear it, this song is timeless. John mellencamp has a real talent for making magic moments.
@@tobiasamaral5859 it was good for them because they were young and full of hope. now they're old and full of hate. Mellencamp was as pinko as they came in small town Indiana back then, they don't care because his songs remind them of their youth.
Yep I had a girlfriend that called everyone "Hon" I felt great when she called me that until she called a male boarder that and the dog and the male attendant at gas station etc😪😪
the single greatest gift of john (cougar) mellencamp was his ability to use his lyrics to reach inside us and find the things all carry special meanings to us and resonate for everyone.
Hadn't seen this in decades. It probably remains the best of Mellencamp's "character studies" of small-town American life. A true classic. Thanks for posting!

Francisco Castaneda I always felt JCMs guitarist sounds a bit like Keith Richards style but a bit more southern American tone to the guitar. Maybe I'm wrong.
Saw him 7 times! He rocked!
1985
This song takes me back to when I was 7 years old. Had this song on a 45 record and played it all the time on my stereo. As an adult, still have an appreciation for Mellencamp's music and probably hear "Hurts So Good" on the radio several times a week. His music has staying power. Going to see him in concert for my first time in the spring and SO SO excited!! I hope he plays this song. I may get weepy because of being so nostalgic...thank you for reading.
Ive seen john twice in concert in Minneapolis Minnesota. In the 90s. Was and still is my all time favorite musician
So lonesome 🖤

Time sure flies. We rock out over here!
Johnny Cougar is the epitome of American rock and roll.
Yessss!¡¡ 😁
@John Mellencamp You're welcome!
john is my hero i grew up as a teen to his music in the 80s and is partly the sound track to my younger life
1985

Amen, Johnny Cougar. AMEN.
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹
They just do not make GREAT MUSIC like this anymore!!!!!
radio wake up play this stuff !!
You mean the Beebs isn’t this good? 😂
This comes from a different era.
most people don't play it - its all computerized now
Disfrutando desde Argentina, que temazo!
Great Summer Song!
Poor Johnny Boy still doesn't get any recognition or plaudits for his supreme volume of work, love this cat, I grew up on his music, it's engrained in my DNA, I'm still here loving every day, especially when I listen to any classic of Mellencamp's!
I haven't heard this song since the 80's, one of his best!
cheers to Indiana and Mellencamp Whiskey Co!
John Mellencamp
Summer in Texas, in the Eighties, sweet sweet memories.
KEEPA ROCKIN MR J.C AN THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GREAT MUSIC AN HARD WORK THAT YOU PUT INTO MAKING EVERY ONE OF YOUR GREAT SONGS BROTHER🍀🇺🇲..
the genius of this song is putting the melody in the percussion
I thank God for you John. The world is a better place.
Love the drummer
when you can appreciate music and live in that magic when you hear it, this song is timeless. John mellencamp has a real talent for making magic moments.
I'd give anything to go back... we were free,, large and in charge
I agree and now most of us are just large lol
Why was it so good? Give a piece of advice to a 2000's kid, please
@@flashboyer4517John Mellencamp
@@tobiasamaral5859 it was good for them because they were young and full of hope. now they're old and full of hate. Mellencamp was as pinko as they came in small town Indiana back then, they don't care because his songs remind them of their youth.
Being a metal head for 50 odd years it's hard to head bang any more but can still tap my foot to J C Mellencamp
"she calls me baby, she calls everybody baby . . ." love this line
GREAT CALL ERIC. ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME HAS ENTIRE WING FOR HIM. ROCK N THE USA!
such a great line
Yep I had a girlfriend that called everyone "Hon" I felt great when she called me that until she called a male boarder that and the dog and the male attendant at gas station etc😪😪
This video is perfect! My favorite JCM song!
Song is so smooth! It is the epitome of cool!
GREAT CALL RUNNER
the single greatest gift of john (cougar) mellencamp was his ability to use his lyrics to reach inside us and find the things all carry special meanings to us and resonate for everyone.
Another great written song by John Mellencamp, cool video as well!
Lena (SentimentalMe69) hurrts so good
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹

My all-time favorite John Mellencamp track!
Mine too!

Hadn't seen this in decades. It probably remains the best of Mellencamp's "character studies" of small-town American life. A true classic. Thanks for posting!
