The EPA killed these things. Keep this old girl on the road and enjoy it every day. The legacy of real "Big Trucks" needs to be kept alive. Thanks for posting!!
The 3408 and the 2-stroker Detroits were dropped after 1986. By that time, the V8 Cat was only available in the Pete 359. The 92 Series Detroits were not available in Paccar trucks after mid-1982. It was both an emissions and marketing issue. The Detroits had far too many issues - leaks, short MTBF rates, high BSFC, low torque ratings, etc. The V8 Cat was certainly competitive, but used a lot of fuel and was a very expensive option. The 3408E did continue as an option for large passenger coaches until it was discontinued in 2005.
Cannot really blame the EPA, Cat themselves decided that their offroad market share was so big and on road not big enough that they didnt want to bother investing in engineering to move forward to make the 08 cleaner and more efficient.
