    Today I'm putting my BMW n20 engine on an engine stand. There are a few things that need to be mentioned, such as using the correct bolts. I will show you how to measure the length and the width of the bolts for your application and how to attach it to the engine safely. Always support the engine with an engine crane until it is fully secured on the engine stand.

    If you storing it for a long time might be good to.put a lumber in front of it underneath the oil pan to avoid distortion on the cylinder wall

      Thanks for the tip! I took it off the stand once I was done tearing it down and found the issue.

    You might be able to make it easier to rotate the engine, and even keep it upright if you change the mounting frame to be closer to the centre of balance (or roll if you like) of the engine. I think that's why they have so much adjustment in those two frames. Also be super careful with rotating an engine on a stand for the first time. Even small engines can be very heavy and if a top-heavy engine starts to fall over/rotate, it can get pretty dangerous if you try to stop it or it bangs into something nearby, or worse still topples over. Take your time and wear steel capped boots :-)

    I swapped a 2017 N20 into a 2013 X3 with a broken N20 and had to use the retro fit the 2013 Cam Sensors and Wires to make the computer happy. 2017 had changed the sensors and plugs.

      I swapped a 2015 into 2012 Z4 and I had to change the oil sensor and the injectors before it ran right.

    Will the stand support the engine if you try to torque the crankshaft pulley on it?

    • @SimpleCarGuy

      Mostly.. I just did the main bolt on the N55 engine and it held up, but was a little sketchy towards the end and I had to kind of hold the engine a little bit so it wouldn't tip over.

    is is okay to leave the engine on stand for a long period of time? like 6 months on the stand? im afraid the stand would break

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  2 года назад

      I’ve had an engine on the stand for 2 months and it was fine. I guess it would depend on specs of the stand, but I don’t think it’s an issue.

      @@SimpleCarGuythanks for your response mate. the stand rated for 560kg max load. my engine weight almost 300kg, thats why I have doubt 🤣, anyway really nice video

    Hey buddy. Where did you buy the m10 bolt ? I am unable to find an m10 bolt that is threaded all the way. I found some at hd and lowes, but it’s threaded only for an inch or so , so I am worried it may put stress on the engine as the bolt won’t go all the way in

    • @johnburkhart5561
      @johnburkhart5561 11 месяцев назад

      My understanding is the bolt you found is actually better for this than a fully threaded bolt. The threaded part works best when received into a threaded hole of the engine block, and the smooth part is good for the lateral load of where it's in the engine stand.

    Stand looks inadequate and the balance looks top heavy.
