    Zirconia vs Titanium Implants. Benefits of Zirconia vs conventional titanium dental implants by Gary Adams DDS in Maryland
    Zirconia Dental Implants are also called Cosmetic Tooth Implants. Zirconia-Ceramic is Metal Free and Tooth Colored.
    Our Zirconia-Ceramic implant dental practice is located in the Maryland DC metro area: Burtonsville Silver Spring.
    The Million Dollar Question: Is Zirconia a metal?
    No. A metal is a material that conducts electricity. In fact zirconia, if anything is an insulator or a material that has everything but metallic properties. Think of wires with a plastic coating. The wire is always a metal or a material that conducts electricity well and the plastic coating is an “insulator” that keeps electronic current inside the wire and does not allow the electricity to escape. Zirconia being an excellent insulator, is quite the exact opposite of a metal. The non-conductivity of zirconia is exactly what helps it perform well in biologic systems because it does not corrode or react with a water based biologic system. After all, we are nearly 100% water anyway and we all know metal rusts or corrodes. It also helps that zirconia is white and looks better too.

    Benefits and Pros of Zirconia-Ceramic Tooth Implants:
    What is all the hype with metal free ceramic implants? What is a zirconia implant dentist? The cosmetic advantages of ceramic-zirconia implants are obvious. Cosmetic dental implants in addition to being tooth colored do in fact have many other advantages.

    My friend got tinnitus because of titanium implants in 3 places in his jaw. He is going to hear a lot noise till he dies. But I told him replace them with zirconia implants. He is grateful for that tips.

      It also may be from a bite change. The ears can get symptoms when the bite is off. And it could be after getting a lot of new teeth.

    If people have immune reactions to titanium why can't they just coat it with a non inflammatory material so you keep the durability but without direct contact between the metal and oral tissues?

    • @SereneOrthodontics
      @SereneOrthodontics  2 года назад +3

      That is what they do for titanium implants. The core of the implant is a titanium alloy usually Titanium, Cobalt, Chromium and sometimes nickel. The outer layer is pure titanium oxide. Sometimes the surface fails and the alloy is exposed.

    I hope you can help me with my question…way at the end of my post:
    I had titanium implants done, posts/abutment only. No crowns.
    #1) 3 posts placed incorrectly in lower jaw molars. The X-rays look like a fallen Janga game. All 3 at different angels and angels towards and away from each other.
    I was told all apx 30° to 40°+ angle, 2 sitting above gum apx 2-3 mm, 1 mini is a partial fail and pointing into my mouth at apx 40°.
    *They looked like that when I left the dentist office.
    *I was extremely careful and I didn’t eat anything I had to chew nor did I touch posts with fingers or toothbrush etc. I gently rinsed with salted water, bushed teeth avoiding posts. I consciously kept my teeth from touching so I wouldn’t bite down at least consciously. I’ve never been told that I grind my teeth.
    #2) Not long after the placement I started getting rashes at elbows, top of feet, neck, including scalp line at back of neck etc.
    My pain management doctor mentioned that I may have a metal allergy. I wasn’t asked about any allergies at the dentist office.
    I don’t have a bad allergy. Cheap earrings give me a slight infection for several days and some cheap rings have irritated my fingers.
    Now over 6 months having the titanium posts and still with rashes, 3 different consults (I didn’t mention anything about the implants) plus a regular dentist told me all 3 implants have to be removed and placed properly regardless of my allergy, due to the placement/angles and partial failure. I have NOT yet had them removed due to other more pressing dental issues.
    QUESTION:
    I’m concerned that zirconia implants will be too wide for my jaw. Especially in the first molar I think that is what it’s called..? The tooth/molar or premolar? The one closest to the my lower front teeth that starts to look like a molar . That tooth grew in twice and in my 20s it cracked and I didn’t have anything done with it until I was in my 40s and I was told there was some bone loss at that tooth. I was told as a young teen that my mouth is very small and had adult teeth removed to avoid crowding.
    I was told by a regular dentist that the bone there is very small but he told me to get a consult with a dentist that does just implants and see what he says.
    Does this happen a lot with zirconia vs titanium? That the zirconia implants are too big to be used? Is there a hybrid with non-metal wrapped around titanium or another type of non-metal implant available now?
    Dentures are not an option for me because my mouth can be hypersensitive even to a partial pop out that I had for the one missing tooth. (I’ve been diagnosed with ME/CFS or FMS so pain is every day without ceasing) No amount of adjusting could fix the pain. So now my only option is implant as I understand.
    Especially since titanium come in “mini” size which was used for that tooth.
    If you happen to see and reply to this extremely long post, thank you in advance.

    I just looked up how long do zirconia dental implants last on Google and the top answers are 2-3 years success rates, which is scary considering I'm having this option open to me next year after implant surgery this January to remove my metal implant and have a bone graft done, so now I'm confused. I thought the white implant was better, but it won't be if it only lasts 3 years max!

    • @SereneOrthodontics
      @SereneOrthodontics  3 года назад +3

      That is false information. Once i've had initial success I have yet to have one fail. All things considered the edge in durability goes to titanium, but if an appropriate implant is placed either one should work well. There are certain situations where one is better than an other. They are different materials. One is not "better" than another.

      @@SereneOrthodontics I may consider it then as my bone graft isn't going ahead this month now as the dentist said it isn't needed and to see in 2 years time instead.

    For Zirconia, you said the surrounding gum can become unstable. Can you explain that a little more and is that more common with zirconia vs titanium implants?

    • @SereneOrthodontics
      @SereneOrthodontics  5 лет назад +4

      My apologies for the confusion. Gum tissue for many reasons can become unstable around natural teeth and implants. In general there is solid research to demonstrate that gum tissue on the average is healthier and stronger around zirconia implants relative to titanium implants. Evidently, metal disrupts the blood supply of surrounding gum tissue resulting in 50% less blood supply around metal implants relative to non-metal implants.
      The point in the video - if gum tissue becomes unstable for any reason, causing an implant to become visible, metal will be unsightly. Obviously a tooth colored implant has huge cosmetic advantages in such a situation.

    • @susana5052
      @susana5052 2 года назад

      I have read some research papers that say that in some people there’s trace titanium in their blood. Some research indicating that it can be a health issue for some people. I think it was a Japanese research paper that I read about first. There are others that indicate the same thing and even more issues with titanium where there’s none with zirconia.
      Do you know of anything on that topic?@@SereneOrthodontics

      The technology has not really changed much but thanks for reminding me that I need to do a new and updated video. People do not like to see old videos as much. In our area a titanium replacement all in is around 5K. The zirconia is another 1K.

    Are zirconia implant cemented or screwed in? Cemented implants have higher risk of causing problems and more complicated to fix or remove.

    • @SereneOrthodontics
      @SereneOrthodontics  2 года назад

      This will cause problems if the missing tooth has a tooth below it. If it’s the last tooth people sometimes don’t replace it. You need to keep at least one molar pair

  • @zxwmabcdef5439

    Why don't they use niobium? Niobium alloys are way less reactive than titanium. Titanium is actually a very reactive metal.

    are titanium implants more likely to suffer infection.....due to have two pieces....rather than one, with zirconia...

    • @SereneOrthodontics
      @SereneOrthodontics  6 лет назад +4

      No. That is a myth. As long as a high quality 2 piece zirconia or titanium implant system is properly configured. There is no additional risk of infection. In fact one piece implants are 3x as likely to fail to to a healing phase with a piece sticking up in the mouth vs healing without something sticking up above the gumline as in a 2 piece system. 2 piece systems have different shaped pieces that go on top of the implant to help get a nice shape to the crown on top. The crown is a better shape, easier to clean and bites better. All around the one piece implants are inferior. Implant companies made the one piece theory up as a sales pitch to blow out all their competition and cover up the pit fall of the one piece system problems.
