My first root canal was 38 years and 4 months ago. Last week the crown fell off. A few days ago my dentist "glued" that crown back in there. Still considering it a success.
Several months ago I had a root canal on a tooth that already had a crown, no previous root canal. For months it was uncomfortable to chew on it and now I can chew, although there is some feeling in it. No pain. I have already spoken with my oral surgeon and if I have pain, I will have it pulled and an implant. At my age, 77, I don't think I would have another root canal. My teeth must be brittle by now and I know there is an issue with bone. A couple of months ago I had an implant. No dental insurance. I just hope to outlive my teeth at this stage of the game. I had my first root canal at age 12 by a pioneer in the procedure. Back then it was done without any pain medication. Believe it or not, I still have that tooth 65 years later!
you are breaking all odds . You still have the tooth of the root canal? So there is hope to keep it for a lifetime then . I got one 3 years ago, just put a crown over it and I have no issues yet . But just concerned with all these videos
That is wonderful. Is the tooth a front tooth or a back molar? Front teeth have only one root and usually last longer. Molars have multiple roots and are more difficult to clean and break more easily.
Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you all the best! I need to get a root canal retreatment and hoping the second time around will last a long time!
thank you for you video. I have already decided on a single implant for my lower right 2nd molar as my orthodontist had advised me to get an implant and NOT a root canal and to do so AFTER I completed my ortho treatment.
Good info, doc. Even with the facts you present, this whole root canal vs. implant decision is so tough. Leaning toward extract and implant, because I have heart disease, and I suspect prior tooth infections/root canals may have been a factor... Seems that leaving a dead, slowly rotting tooth in place is not good for cardiac health.
It depends on what tooth you're doing a root canal on because others have more roots and canals have have to be cleaned and sterilized. Sometimes it gets complicated or the anonymity of the tooth is complicated based on your teeth structure.
An implant isn’t covered by insurance. Its somewhat accessible going outside the USA. No way most ofus could afford that option. With insurance a root canal is $140. I have a root canal from 20 years ago.
No question that cost is a consideration. Most people find money for Iphones, but not their teeth. Priorities. People can live without teeth. I am not here to judge people for where they choose to spend money. I had an option to get a free root canal and I replaced the tooth with an implant.
@@SereneOrthodontics okay, an iphone is $5-900. I keep mine at least 6 years between replacing. An implant? A few grand. I would need to travel to Baja. Where it is 60% or more less. Right now, I’m getting crowns for 6 teeth on the sides, over $5000. Its unreal.

Dr. Adams what do you think happens when a root canal you extract due to, say, tooth fracture, still looks clean in the root? Is it safe to assume those 'successes' haven't become problem systemic infections? I hear reports from assistants in dental offices that they see some 30 year old root canal extractions that look pristine and some on the opposite end and lots in between. Obviously I'd hope if I get one (deciding now) it would remain pretty clean looking. But do even those root canals cause infection to leach into the body that we can't see?
No doubt some look better and some look worse. The dental literature states only 97% of the root can be clean, so there is always some amount of infection. Sometimes people just go with an implant because they last longer than root canals
I had a very large filling fall out and they are suggesting a root canal now, but I’m torn between getting an extraction and implant because of all the horror stories I’m hearing about bacteria leaking into the body now. But I asked my regular dentist about it and he’s saying they’re both good options, but root canal all the way. I had a failed root canal that was causing other issues in my body specifically in my throat that cleared up the day after I got the root canal fixed. Now I have another tooth that needs a root canal. The doctor said it’s more than worth saving I guess my question is what the hell should I do lol it’s one of my molars on the top back right second from last… consultations with holistic doctors out in California start at almost $300 and I’m super torn… I can pay 600 for the root canal. Or go to Mexico and stay with my girlfriends family and get an implant for two grand and have it last what I’m assuming would be a lifetime? I’m a healthy 35-year-old.
You could also get a denture. Flipper tooth. That's what I'll get for my extraction that I have for tomorrow. That way you don't spend that much on an implant in case you get it extracted. Just make sure the dentist you're visiting for extraction removes the PDL, removes any granulation tissue and has a centrifuge for PRF for better bone healing. If he has ozone as well that'd be also great. Which tooth did you extract that was giving you throat issues? Was it on the mandible or maxilla and did you have any other issues besides the throat stuff? Like Postural, balance or breathing?
Hi I need help my health anxiety or something around my neck and sinuses is wrong after a root canal done in 2021 after my health down wards I have 3 RT I feel confused, brain fogs, headeaches, buzzing, neck crackles, I suspect it’s RT but should I get a inflammatory marker test done to rule out of its RT causing infections ?
I have the option of getting a root canal, but the tooth may be too far gone. I have a huge cavity inside my upper back left molar tooth, reaching all the way to the root, which is infected. The tooth cracked because of bruxism and a cavity formed inside the crack. In order to prevent any future infection, I'm leaning towards fully removing the tooth, then getting an implant. The dentist gave me those two options but seemed more confident about extraction. If I were to get a root canal, it would involve multiple procedures, because the root is compromised. I assume that's why my dentist recommends extraction.
I'm only 25 and I should have gotten my #1 wisdom tooth out a few years back but I waited and it caused a bad cavity to the tooth in front of it. Now it has a mild infection and I guess I need to decide what to do. I'm scared
Usually implants will last longer and you also do not have the risk of bacteria leaking out of a dead tooth. Definitely get all your wisdom teeth out. They will collect bacteria and cause more decay.
Thank you so much for your information. my dentist did not even suggest anything other then a root canal . the thing is i have no pain and my dentist is suggesting a root canal. she said i had a infection. if there are so many problems with root canals i might want a implant or bridge.

Elaine, you can look at this as an accountant or healthcare professional, but your best bet is to replace the tooth you describe with an implant. The initial success rate for root canal retreatments is not good and the long-term prognosis ofter is even worse. Many people feel like they threw good money at bad money when doing retreatments.
