My dentist gave me those two options, but I don't have the expertise to make that decision. All I know is that my tooth is infected all the way to the root and is causing immense pain. I don't see why I'd want to keep a tooth that is infected. It seems like getting it extracted would prevent any future infection. What I do know is that when the dentist told me my options, he seemed more confident about extraction versus a root canal.
I had a root canal, core and crown on the same day. Not painful at all . What's painful was the numbing injection and after it wore off. But you'll be given antibiotics and ibuprofen after that. However in my case I was still in pain for the first 2 days.
Covered by insurance (most) versus super pricy for patient. Need to travel to get done.
I didn't understand what the difference between the two is
Last week my dental appointment revealed a cavity under the crown, the dentist says I'll send you to an specialist for a root canal hoping to save the tooth. The specialist said yesterday the tooth wasn't a good candidate for a root canal and explained reasons why, so we decided to have the tooth extracted, while performing the extraction the tooth next to the bad tooth wanted to come out as well... it was horrible, painful, I thought my entire jaw was being detached from my chin, but the tooth finally out, finished, but the tooth next-door that still remans is weak and unstable, so a bridge is out of the question., therefore an implant is my only option. My original dentist isn't happy the tooth wasn't saved, but wants me to return to her office to install the new implant... I fear it's going to be extremely painful and a long, long process.
How'd you make out?
Root canals are nothing nowadays. It's no worse than a filling if you have a good, competent dentist.

Waaay more. Insurance covers you for like 70% root canal. None for implants.
Definitely. But, if you need a tooth replaced, an implant is your best solution. I just got my top left second molar removed a couple of hours ago. They did a bone graft, which insurance doesn't cover. So far, I've spent $600 for the bone graft. In a few months, they'll put an implant in. After that, I'll get a crown put in. Insurance will more than likely not cover any of it. It will probably cost me around $5000 once it's all said and done. In my opinion, it's worth it. An implant is a permanent solution. I'm getting a root canal done next Monday. Hopefully, I won't have any issues with that tooth after that. But, if I do, I guess I already know how the process will be, with another extraction and implant.
