  • What's shaking, people! I'm back with another Oleta Adams reaction from her 1990 album A Circle of One, and this time we listen to the powerful yet sublime "Get Here," a song with soul, jazz, and ambient qualities, as well as a passionate emotional appeal. So join me as we dive further into this album. Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

Oleta has many stunning songs... My Heart Won't Lie, I Just Had to Hear Your Voice, You've Got to Give Me Room, to name a few. Thank you for reacting to this. It's a beautiful song, full of longing, hopeful power and 'love'. An incredible and unique voice... a truly gorgeous gift!

This was originally written and performed by Brenda Russell on her rather underrated album of the same name, and was a small hit for her. Adams heard the song while in Stockholm (ironically where the track was originally written by Russell). It was released as the second single from the album and was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic - part of it's success was due to it's releases at the time of the Gulf War and becoming associated with people missing the men overseas. It's really beautiful, she sings it so passionately and sensitively - it's really easy to be cynical about a record like this but when it hits, like it did for me this morning listening to it, you can't doubt it's power. (My partner as been working in China since last August - guess I'm missing him haha)

What a great reaction; great insights. This is one of my top ten songs so it is near to my heart. Her depth and soulfulness and clarity and range and power are staggering. I appreciate you reacting to it!

And I'll give a shout out to Mark as well for all his great info! So, Roland Orzabal can produce a song without having dozens of tracks layered all over each other. 😉Actually, this arrangement is pretty much how Oleta usually performed. She'd play piano accompanied by a bassist and drummer. Here the bass is played by Pino Palladino, who has appeared on numerous albums, including Seeds of Love, and long-time Oleta drummer Jon Cushon is also her husband. This arrangement put Oleta's voice front and center, and this is such a tremendous vocal. It's a pretty straight forward song, but she conveys so much emotion with it. I love how the melodic bass gets added to the piano, and then drums come in at just the right time at the chorus. Roland adds some light touches of synth. Just a beautiful song! And next up is one of several tunes composed by Oleta, the title track Circle of One, so we'll finally see just what that phrase means!
BTW, Matt, on your discussion about enjoying the different sounds from various female vocalists: wait until you hear Koko Taylor!

I don't understand why she wasn't a superstar. Vocally she could compete with Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston.

Probably her biggest hit, absolutely beautiful and a straight to the point lyric. Production is gorgeous as is her voice. No over-blown singing (take note Mariah) , Oleta is powerful but understated.
Only quibble are the odd use of phrases or transport methods to make the rhyming work : "Arab Man" (to rhyme with "Caravan") and "trailway" (to rhyme with "railway") ... but that's just me nitpicking.
