Here's my honest view on this podcast: All of it is very honest and realistic. There's no sugarcoating. No believing in lies. Its direct. No beating around the bush. Its awesome.
Uncle Roger "exposes" Asian culture in a good relatable way. I love the tiny details like 'smacking remote when battery runs out'... that's just pure truth. And the accent? I love accents!!!! asian, latino, french accents,--- it makes one authentic. Geeeesh people are easily offended sometimes.
As a Malaysian it's really common to code switch our accent, like heck we have a Malay accent for our Malay friends and an Indian accent for our Indian friends, and hei not once we were being criticized as insulting. But I guess it all comes down to culture and life experience :D Btw I really like this episode! Can't wait for more!
Dear Evelyn, I like you more each time I listen to the podcast. You are talented & jovial. Glad that you deleted the fat shaming comments, it shows that you are moving out from your depression! Keep it up! You are nice & beautiful as you are right now, just stay healthy 😊
Who else is here because Rice To Meet You has become a placebo for your “dearly departed social life”? All chats with my friends have become a sharing of anxieties and the banter of these two is soo refreshing.
I was born and raised in Taiwan. My good friend is a Latino American who knows how to cook rice with rice cooker. When he does something funny, I always say "You are just like Uncle Roger". He takes that as a compliment. There's no racist, only happy laughters.
My husband is a Scottish living in Malaysia for more than 15 years. During his 1 month business trip to Paris last year, he brought a travel size rice cooker with him!
I'm 2nd generation Chinese born in America and I absolutely LOVE Uncle Roger. He is hilarious and I love his jokes and comments on all the fried rice videos. I fell in love with Uncle Roger and then I found my way to your podcast which is hilarious by the way! I love how you dive into such deep topics and how real you are with the podcast! Keep it up! You've gained another fan!
Thank you for addressing the uncle roger situation towards the end. It’s clarified my initial unease about the character. Times have changed. My son has completely embraced uncle roger and given him an insight into his Chinese heritage (we live in Uk). It’s about time we reclaim and rewrite the Chinese narrative. The Jamie Oliver skit is a case in point. Keep up the good work. You guys were on form today🔥🔥💜💜💜 Stob it! Needs to be sound bite 😁
Great episode. Evelyn is right, I want the real discussion, don't bring the juice only to other podcasts, give us the juice too. And a podcast is not a stand-up show, it doesn't require us to laugh all the time. I want to learn and think too.
I think Uncle Roger is just funny by sharing less serious, cute side of a lot of Asians. It's so nice how I'm a Filipina but still can relate to most of the lines. And yes, Filipinos have to follow the Western standard of accent. Although, I think people should just accept the cultural differences and embrace it. It's never bad to have a thick accent.
From Asian to Asians, keep doing what you're doing. It's great to see honest, bold, affirmative content out there. I find you both hilarious and smart.
As a Malaysian-Chinese, we are just flexible and very used to code switch our accents automatically to adapt to our audience or the environment. We can speak with Malay & Indian accents with our Malaysian friends, even when we speak in Chinese, I have to switch to different Chinese accents based on who am I speaking with, e.g. Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, etc. Western-born Chinese may feel more offended but Malaysians are born and raised in a mostly-peaceful (put those racist politicians who are intended to start a race war aside) diverse environment, we feel more comfortable and closer to play with our accents among our friends from different ethnicities. A lot of Asians, especially Malaysians are feel relatable when we saw Uncle Roger because that character is exactly displaying the common traits of the middle-aged uncles/aunties in our community. They are really sassy, arrogant, funny, judgemental and can be a bit savage too, as well as thinking themselves knowing more things than us (young people) because they are older XD
OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR ARTICULATING THE ASIAN FROM ASIA PERSPECTIVE SO WELL. As a Southeast Asian from Southeast Asia, sometimes, I feel the diaspora invalidates us too much.
Evelyn is so insightful and incredibly aware of what's going on. Re: the rice cooker, its not a single use appliance, you can cook Lup Chong (Chinese sausage) in it too!
rice cookers are multi-use appliances! I've used them for hotpot (that's a staple if you're an international student in the western world), cooking noodles, chicken rice, soups... anything. it's amazing.
It can bake cakes, make bread, cook quinoa perfectly, make a great stew, and I cook pasta in it!! It's not for Asian food only... . I know I just love food 🤤
After 3 years in an Indonesian kos (boarding house, 1 room to live your whole life in), I can assure you, rice is only one of the very few things you can make in a rice cooker. From porridge to bread, from soup to stew, anything goes!
Hi, Ive been following your content for quite a while and find it enjoyable and educational (I and a number of my friends have a strong appreciation and interest for south asian culture) I think people who are intelligent enough are able to see the comedy for what it is and the accents as a celebration of the diversity, I think Uncle Rogers accent is a way of reclaiming that aspect of that culture, It in many ways reminds me of what Sanjeev Bhaskar did for the indian community in the 1990s with "goodness gracious me". I think in many ways because we know it is comedy when we enter that arena (ie pod cast comedy club etc) we should expect roasting and that direct critical lens, people with complaints are usually people with personal insecurities and usually cant see the big picture. As a northern english white guy from a poor background I find that some of the things you talk about about your background have similarities (I grew up with some Uncle Roger character types). personally I think accents are important to make characters whole, the uk has tons of regional accents and dialects there have been famous Brums and Scousers where their accents have been a big part of their act (Actually historically the BBC would not allow regional accents on radio or T.V. which is partly why ITV was created which was created from regions in the uk, also for a long time theatre companies would use birmingham accents to represent thick people and yorkshire or cornish accents to represent peasants and farmers).
You both are talented and fuiyoh! I am actually born and raised in mainland China and basically have no experience living abroad (hopefully going to Europe for further study within a few years). However I just found that Uncle Roger is such a relatable character for his accent, values, belt phone case, leg on chair, the HAIYA which is similar to that in Cantonese Hakka etc.. I’d got no idea about how the Chinese’s life is like abroad before but now I know. Perhaps some are suffering those racist issues, some’ve already got whitened unintentionally for easier life of course while some are still proud of their ancestors’ culture. Anyway it just reminds me that we have so many various life experiences which are all valid in their context, and I would really love to explore the diversity in Asians’ life around the world, and hopefully visit Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Chinatowns in different countries. I hope this comment could be fully understood although I don’t speak fluent English. Like you guys sharing your in-depth ideas. 爱你们!Nigel and sweetie Evelyn!
Uncle roger in this video was like oppa kdrama 🤣 he has a high sense of fashion. When he wearing this shirt, it’s really remind me of Winter Sonata kdrama 😂
I think what makes Uncle Roger so powerful--beyond reclaiming our Asian-ness--is encouraging this type of dialogue. Part of what makes the accent uncomfortable for Asians in the West is here people with Asian accents are subjugated and othered--made fun of, shamed, or thought of as lesser-than. At the same time, in Asian countries the "accent" is part of everyday vernacular and completely normal. Props to this podcast for bridging perspectives between Asians brought up in Asia and the Asian diaspora!

This was a great episode, thank you. As a native San Franciscan and American (of Chinese descent), I recognize all of the discussed issues. I love the Uncle Roger character, because it’s also familiar to me having spent a good part of my youth growing up around Chinatown. I can hear Nigel’s Asian accent even when speaking like he normally does, but shame on me for being “surprised” his English is as good as it is, being that he grew up in Malaysia. My friends from Singapore also showed me I shouldn’t assume their ability to speak English fluently is compromised just by virtue of having been raised in Asia. As for Evelyn, I’m MOST surprised she’s from Sweden - she sounds 100% American-born. Incredible. ;-)

there's always been a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. I think Nigel does a great job bringing us cultural appreciation
About the accent thing: I see where people are coming from, but I don't think it's Uncle Roger to blame. He's literally a younger version of my dad/uncles right down to the phone case lmao. I think it's white people not understanding people of the same ethnicity can have different accents due to a whole bunch of factors like diff life experiences/situation/different languages/who's in the room. Like, I'm Chinese American living in the UK and no one thinks I can speak English upon first glance (STOP IT!) and even I have a sliding scale of how "Chinese" I sound depending on whether I'm with friends or at work, etc. I don't share the sentiments of people bothered by the Uncle Roger accent, but I believe part of the knee-jerk reaction is the fear that it'll feed into Asian face = an Asian accent (hello, Hollywood, you are guilty), similar to what Evelyn said. Some of us gonna sound like auntie Hersha or Evelyn and some of us won't. I hope that they can see the Uncle Roger is coming from a place of love and his existence isn't trying to diminish the fact that Asians, esp. diaspora Asians, with more Westernized accents also exist (that's what Hollywood be doing, STOP IT). Also yes Nigel I had that same experience talking smth Asian with a group of white people. I was just enjoying my boba and someone said "I don't understand why someone would pay this much for tea" unbelievable.
Love the topic of this podcast.. I really like Uncle Roger because he represent an Asian Uncle to me. I grew up in Asian country and now I live in western world. Let's just celebrate our Asian culture wherever we are and to ignore the haters ... People are gonna love or hate, no matter what we do. Can not please everyone! Each to their own 💕
Evelyn IS the voice of reason of the pod. Hahaha. As much as I love the funny interjections, I very much appreciate the deep provoking nuances you guys bring up! :D
Honestly, I get that Uncle Roger is just a character, but I really enjoy it. I was surprised to see how different you were from the character, and I'm enjoying the videos. The Singaporean/Malyasian accent is one of my favourites, but I don't get a chance to hear it much. The jokes and the food critiques are great too. You are creating exposure for your country and culture in a welcoming way, and creating curiosity for those of us who enjoy your content from the outside.
I am from North Africa and live in Germany. I have unfortunately grew up with negative stereotypes about Asian people especially Chinese, not from my country, we have little to do with China that we don't developp these stereotypes ourselves but all the Hollywood industry perpetuates these stereotypes everywhere in the world. To me Chinese people were so different, so unusual (almost alien like). And with uncle Roger they became more human and I really laugh about a lot of the things he says because they are so relatable and I could name a few (not buying the clothes at the front in a store, cringing about boiling rice (we do steam rice in my country) and it reminds how I cringe every time Germans boil couscous when it's supposed to be steamed)). What I want to say is that uncle Roger is spreading cultural awareness more than stereotypes. What I have noticed is that ex colonies of European countries have more in common than we would think, like changing the accent or being bilingual etc..
Thank you for continually putting out great content! I thank Nigel and uncle roger for introducing me to “rice to meet you” and I thank Evelyn and Nigel for keeping me here. I look forward to this every week!!! As a white person who knows very little about Asian culture I’m always learning. And appreciate others views and experiences. Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

You guys r great n doing great job! Keep it up! I like that u talk about all the issues and still keep it light hearted and funny

Omg the “stop it” sounds exactly like my mom. Actually, my mom got in the car while I was listening to this, at the point where Nigel kept saying “stop it” and she cracked up 😂
After seeing the Uncle Roger character and watching Nigel as himself I have really enjoyed learning about his culture and all attributes of Asian life. Very interesting and the comedy aspect has brought happiness to myself during this Pandemic and series of lockdowns. Keep up the great work. Big love to both of you
You two are massive Asian forces to be reckoned with! Positive internalisation is really what we are lacking in this day and age. Nigel doesn't just give you belly laugh but also aha moment.
ABC here who grew up never quite getting American comedy. I got Uncle Roger immediately -- wish Asian kids had had comedians like you a generation ago. It is welcome (and hilarious) recognition.
Re Uncle Roger, asianness successfully emigrated to Hawaii, where I was born and raised, and where the mix of Asian cultures is so great and delicious. I had the opportunity to also live in Europe, and return to the continental US. Uncle Roger is nostalgia to me! The loving patriarchal figure was my maternal great-grandparents, the sass my paternal uncles, the Haiyaaa my mom and her friends and the fuiyoh shared and volleyed between Dad and me lol especially as I chronicled my crawl across Europe. And now that I'm a mom there are just some things that I feel compelled to transmit to my half-German, half-American kid who has never known a home without a rice cooker!
Uncle Daddy, I mean Uncle Roger and Evelyn sound like a old married couple. They seem to have good conversations like two best friends. When Evelyn said Uncle Roger acts the same on and off the camera that was funny. This podcast was a very interesting look at Asian comedy. Good podcast. And the picture on the wall is very Oppa.
Growing up in Brisbane, Australia, I got pretty good Asian food there too I think (but people always forget Brisbane when they think of Australia, its all Melbourne and Sydney) - Chinatown in the Valley, or like the whole of Sunnybank. Dang, I miss it. Can't get any good Asian food where I am in Germany. That's why I made sure to do a day in Chinatown last weekend when I was in London.
I can honestly say I've seen a change in The western world and how they see Asia. I've always wanted to travel there so I learned some about the culture. I feel the more we are exposed to other cultures the more people can relate and we become closer as human beings.
Hey guys, can you write a Uncle Roger episode where he gives his “niece and nephew” relationship advice. This is inspired by the last UR episode with niece Evelyn. People can write to you. Or you can do a Reddit thread 😁
I think when developing a character, the authenticity of the character is found in both the craft of the creator, and what internal essence of themselves the creater can impart to the character. Well, when I first saw an Uncle Roger video, Uncle Roger read as organic. I didn't realize he was a character until I looked closer at the channel. I like the character, as many million apparently do.
the swab test in the Philippines is not instant. i think the result is like 3 days. but the rapid test (blood sample) takes only about 15 minutes, Nigel.
You guys articulate this beautifully. I loved uncle roger when I first saw it, but I remember when there were more videos I started to worry that people who don’t know the culture might misinterpret it and I think Nigel did a good job w first introducing himself as a secondary person so there is more realization ‘ok this is a satirical’ bc he’s not actually this person. Being first generation Chinese American the blatant racism in a country when it pushes the idea that we are all equal but you’re not treated as such, you automatically think why am I the bastard child? That’s where our idea of an accent is insulting and used against us for not having a seat at the dinner table. But it is a celebration of culture which I believe does translate. Evelyn says it best when comparing comedy to art. My mom and aunties were therapists of the tough love and walked that balancing act of motivation and degrading. “What do you have to be depressed about - stop it! ✋ “ but there was only Love; understanding the context. Thanks for putting this energy out there guys 😊 And Nigel - do you fck boy style 😉
An uncle Roger cartoon would be so cool! Everyone always complains about everything. You both are fantastic. Uncle Roger is not offensive people are just really sensitive about everything.
I like how you both respond to critics openly in the podcast. People simply need to be more understanding! Dont let these things change who Uncle Roger is, we love the character
Uncle roger is my new passion now . I almost watched all of the uncle roger's videos and i can't take my mind of daddy roger haha 🤦♀️ shoutout from Lebanon and i really love your podcasts and everything lots of love ❤
Keep up the occasional serious discussions! I really enjoyed it. I’ll admit, I initially wasn’t going to tune into this podcast because I thought it was purely comedic based on Asian cultural observation humour, but I really like how some issues are actually discussed!
Evelyn is so me😁 To be honest, having evelyn talk about in what stage she is now emotionally, really gives me relieve some how. I hope i have a Nigel Ng with the "Asian" therapist style.
Honestly speaking, if it’s not Uncle Roger, the video wouldn’t have gone viral. Uncle Roger’s existence just made all jokes more authentic. Nigel Ng is a funny guy but with the perfect ascent the video would have just gone plain. So it’s good comedy, and as a Taiwanese I really appreciate it. Relax people!!!!
Evelyn is so precious. Shes kind , smart and very well manners. I wish to have a friend like her.

Each to their own 💕
This is my favorite podcast. You guys are always funny and you don’t talk about boring sh*t
Evelyn IS the voice of reason of the pod. Hahaha. As much as I love the funny interjections, I very much appreciate the deep provoking nuances you guys bring up! :D
Thank you for creating the super funniest and thought provoking podcast. You both bring so much joy to my life 😊🇲🇾😊
I like uncle Roger's accent. Love from Guangzhou, China!
Evelyn is so smart! Really enjoyed all her thoughts. I do enjoy hearing you guys talk about real stuff too so don’t shy away from it 👍
You guys literally posted at 2:00 am in America but I’m gonna watch it anyway
Same!
Thanks for another great episode! A lot of what was discussed in this episode is very recognisable for me as an Asian in the west.
1 reason to instantly love Evelyn and Nigel:
They make every listener feel valid ! period
"We are inside each other's support bubble"
Me: *so distracted with those gold polka dots on the background*
Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️
I love this podcast. The dynamic between Nigel and Evelyn is so endearing.
I love uncle roger because he is so funny! Like if I'm having a bad day I just watch him or ur pod casts and I feel 100% better! I love that you talk about these current issues on ur pod cast too! You guys r great n doing great job! Keep it up! I like that u talk about all the issues and still keep it light hearted and funny
That discussion of Gothenburg brings back so much memory
Customs officer: why do you come to Gothenburg?
Me: for holiday
Customs officer: [mixed expression of suspicion, confusion and amazement]
Omg.. I was waiting for a new podcast. I started listening to this week and I am so hooked. Evelyn love you
What amazes me is seeing the huge difference with uncle roger sub numbers and the small number of people complaining!
I think that should say it all. Keep up the great stand-up, uncle roger and the wonderful podcast. I wish I had found y’all earlier. Thank you both. You are appreciated.
Evelyn is so thoughtful considerate friend. Precious.
Patient Zero!!! Evelyn, I’m glad you survived and made it through.
What happened?
@@ILikeBirds she said she has antibodies for COVID, back in March it the Doctor told her it was Bronchitis.
@@BenSATX oh ok I just started watching the podcast
Love from a fan from mainland China!
I really love this two 😍
My favourite show to listen..stress buster !
After a long day in customer service line..this really made my day..
#proudasian 😬😬
Me: Wow, the podcast is actually digging deep about asian culture for once!
Nigel: And because I want to get laid.
Big love to both of you
The amount of Nigel's confidence is admirable 😂 good job you guys!
I am crying listening to Nigel's advice on "stop it". Lol
And it is my first time seeing Nigel는 Evelyn의 눈치를 봐요
You two are massive Asian forces to be reckoned with! Positive internalisation is really what we are lacking in this day and age. Nigel doesn't just give you belly laugh but also aha moment.
That point about code switching hits home😭 I wish I could just speak in my Hong Kong accent
1.) Nigel is very cute when he laughs.
2.) I love when Evelyn says "OH MY GAWDDDD" priceless
Love u both!
Evelyn is so kind, patient, and funny. I like her. And it reminds me to subscribe her channel. Lovely evelyn ❤️
25:25 You look 40!LMAO I remember that happened when u were gaving a stand-up comedy in Malaysia . It's in one of ur videos😂
The 2 of you is sooooo funny! Keep up what u are doing👍🏻
I love Uncle Roger. Period. And so proud that he's Malaysian :)
Love Uncle Roger, which got me started with Rice to Meet You which is great also, thank you for your time and effort, cheers!!!!
I don't think Nigel "9 condoms" Ng can even get COVID with that massive ego 😂
I think Covid is lucky if it gets Nigel "9 condoms" Ng :D
Ahhhh didn’t expect to see you here!!! 😂 still, it’s pretty funny!!
69 likes, im not liking this comment ;)
I had a stroke and went into cardiac arrest to comprehend what you said
..
Yesss, we have drive thru covid test in USA too. Lol. I love this podcast!! So informative and entertaining!!
You guys are best friend goals
Yes I finally have someone I can look up to 😊. Thank you sir
Love that idea
omg I can already see this evolving into Uncle Roger judging each suitor based on his standards of "worthy niece/nephew in law" hahaha
Hoping you could bring back interviewing Asian pips or Patreons, but loving the Duo and this growing team! Keep it up!
Good discussion on accents. Agree totally on how we switch it when with different people
I don’t care!!! ILOVE UNCLE ROGER! We NEED him during this pandemic! You keep us sane!! Alive!! Evelyn...STOP IT GIRL! Leave him alone!!
the swab test in the Philippines is not instant. i think the result is like 3 days. but the rapid test (blood sample) takes only about 15 minutes, Nigel.
Thanks for putting this energy out there guys 😊
And Nigel - do you fck boy style 😉
An uncle Roger cartoon would be so cool! Everyone always complains about everything. You both are fantastic. Uncle Roger is not offensive people are just really sensitive about everything.
Loved this episode so much I made it through all the ads without skipping ;) yal are the shit!
Evelyn touched up her roots wewww~ looks great!!
Sorry to hear it's so bad for you guys and gerlz ......... I hope you are OK you two - in the Covid WHorld Sphere- Love you BOTH - You ROCK
I love everything Uncle Roger! Also, your podcast is great!
Puncturing the discourse is really good! :) That gives one a breakt too laugh instead of getting too serious about a topic
honestly I have so much admiration when I see plus size people exercising, it makes me happy and motivates me to exercise! ❤❤❤
I slmost died when she said her doctor said "glad you made it."
Perfect self help advice nigel, positive internalization will help so many people.
