Re: stereotypes -- I have *opinions* (that don't fully line up with Evelyn's). Thank you Evelyn for expressing your thoughts so well that it helped me to crystalize mine. Like she said, there are harmful stereotypes of minorities that originate in the majority culture with the intent to other and/or demean the minority culture. However, there are also stereotypes that, wherever they originated, are perpetuated by the minority culture about themselves that are also damaging. This second type includes the idea that members of the minority not living up to the stereotype aren't whatever enough to be a true member of the minority culture. Uncle Roger's parody of the second type serves to highlight and disarm those as well (as in when the character says Asians ought to only study engineering/law/medicine with a wink coming out of the mouth of Nigel the comedian). I prefer washing the rice in a bowl because 1.) Every washing gets the grains into more contact with the water, therefore more flour is washed off the grains. 2.) You can save the rice wash for another purpose. The first wash (the one with the most flour) can be used to water plants or used as hair treatment. The second wash can be used for cooking - it’s especially good for broth-based dishes like sinigang as it can help thicken the broth a bit.
@@lynisganda01 ah I see. I don’t personally use the rice water, so for me, manually swirling the rice under running water in sieve is an efficient way to remove the excess starch
Asians drink hot water cos in the past that's the only way to get clean water (sanitary conditions were not so good) and the habit stuck for generations. Not just in East Asia where it gets cold and wintery, but also in Malaysia and Singapore where its hot all year round. In Singapore and Malaysia, youngsters who grew up drinking iced milk tea/ bubble tea are also starting to convert to hot beverages and some bubble tea stores now sell warm drinks 🤣
Hmm I don't think sanitary conditions are the main reasons why Asians today prefer hot water. First off, East Asian countries had abundant access to fresh clean water throughout its history, which is why they were able to maintain such a highly populated agriculture based communities so early in human history for such a long time. They had sanitary issues only when 1. Wars broke out, 2. Cities got too crowded and basic civic services started failing 3. Poverty was so bad that people started eating random things. At the turn of the 19th century, all 3 of these disasters struck the Asias, which is why some may mistakenly think Asia always had dirty water. All civilizations that achieved high population density and sanitation problems started drinking treated water like coffee, tea or alcohol. Europeans also had to drink alcohol and coffee to avoid drinking contaminated city water, but today they don't actively seek to drink hot water. In places like Mexico today people drink alcohol more than water because the waters are dirty. But again, they dont go out of their way to get hot water. Asians drinking hot beverages actually has more to do with traditional beliefs and Chinese medicinal practices than anything else. Somewhere in history, some fanous Chinese herbal medicine doctor stated that we need to keep our stomachs warm to keep your health. And ever since then most if not all East Asian cultures had been drinking hot beverages whenever possible. In China, people drink beer that's been sitting outside in room temperature because they believe that ice cold liquids are bad for your body. Thats how much they avoid cold water.
@@OYT0724 indeed. What i said previously was a generalisation that only considered a rather recent part of Asia's history where clean water was hard to come by. In the last century, the wars, overpopulation and poverty in some parts of Asia did lead to widespread health issues and drove governments to start public health campaigns encouraging people to boil their water before drinking. From what I read, even the CCP and KMT were agreeable on this. I would also guess that for the thousands of years where wars broke up in Asia, they would also have known about drinking hot (treated) water. And you're right, what underlies the will of the general populace to prefer hot water is the widespread acceptance of traditional medicine concepts. The medicinal framework done up by ancestors still persist today and their texts are still being studied. And the ideal is to achieve 'balance' between all elements. Drinking hot water (a 'yang' beverage) is to adjust one's body to achieve balance with cold weather (a 'yin' environment) or to balance out a 'yin' body type (i.e. weaker and more susceptible to flu). Beer is considered a 'yin' beverage and is not good for you if you have a 'yin' body type. Ginseng is typically very 'yang' and can be consumed to get more vigor or to balance a 'yin' condition, but overconsumption could overdrive your body and cause nosebleeds/fevers. In addition, traditional medicine also seeks to manage the flow of Qi, and balance the 5 elements (metal/wood/water/fire/earth) very much like fengshui. In all, the prescription of any medicine or treatments to any patient is to achieve balance. In Singapore and Malaysia there is an additional perspective. Though temperatures are high all year round, the older people here, including the chinese diaspora largely prefer hot drinks. For many, it is because they work in air-con environments and need the hot drink to warm them up. But you can also see people drinking hot coffee while eating a bowl of noodles in boiling hot soup while it's 32 degrees celsius. This is because they find it cooling when the body sweats. This is similar to the preference of spicy foods in this region (bless the amazing Malay, Indonesian, Indian, Peranakan cuisines here full of spice and flavor and chilli) and also the preference of hot chicken soup in Korea during the summer. You can take your mind off the sweltering heat with something hotter, and feel better after you sweat it out

The code has already expired!! :(
Hi. Thank you for your interest in Yum Asia. The code is not available as we now have our black Friday deals ongoing. These deals are better than the code but will be ending soon.
It hurts me to say, but I miss the gym and I hate the gym, hahahah. But I won't go back as the pandemic still on (even worst in my country where the first wave didn't end), because it's a dirty place… remember, we learned in 2020 people don't wash their hands properly. 😬
One hour of happiness later and I fall back to my boring, depressing life :')
