Today we walk through changing oil on a 2017 BMW X1 xdrive 2.8 with 2.0L 4 cyclinder twin turbo. You are likely to need a specialty tool as we did, so tune in!
Two hints, remove the entire cover instead of working through those little access holes. Its only 10 8mm screws. Makes working on the underside much easier and cleaner. Also, you can inspect the underside of the engine for other issues. That center plug on the filter canister is also a drain plug. Drain it prior to removal makes it drip free. It takes a T55 Torx bit driver.
I have a 2018. Your tutorial is spot on. I put in 4 quarts to start and sure enough the brains told me to add another quart. I didnt have a 32mm socket but I did have a 1-1/4" that worked fine. I don't care for the oil filter set ups on these European cars. Pain in the ass.
Thanks for that. Same as 2021 model. The factory does it for free every 10,000 km but I do it in between every 5,000 km ( 3,000 miles) as well. Brcause ir's a Big vehicle /small engine set up.
I just brought my 2017 BMW X1 and it is time for me to change the oil and I prefer doing it myself rather than taking it to the next guy and because of your video I am greatly appreciative of you showing me how I can get it done myself I would love to see more maintenance videos on this car specifically if you have any more videos please upload and share with us
Thank you for your contribution to the BMW community. And yes, I agree with you with your comments about the dealer service. They have monkeys working there. Is rare to find a caring service tech. I have seen terrible things happen at the dealer. If you want things done right, do it yourself.
Dude thx a lot i am searching for a video of a 2017- 2019 bmw x1 oil chang fore 7 months..... you did good bro but next time when you change the oil again do a step-by-step job. Thx dude!!!
dealerships are bad as fast change places, they all hire anyone off the street with no training and turn them loose on your car, you are correct: do it yourself, save money and you know it's right.
The new filter kit also comes with a new cap for the oil drain in the canister. Took me an hour to jack the car up and do the oil change on this car in my garage, my other cars are amgs and this bmw is by far much easier to access the oil filter and do an oil change. Next time I can probably do it in half an hour.
What’s the point of all that fibreglass under the car? Makes it hard to spray the metal with rust protection. Please more videos about this car great work, I just bought the 2016 today
Did you do anything with the tiny copper ring? I saw it in my oil and am not sure where it came from or where to put the new one. Any thoughts input would be appreciated!
You used a shallow 32mm socket with an extension. Could a regular (deep) 32mm socket work? Some online reference says 5.6qt oil capacity. Is 5 qt sufficient? Oil type important? Thanks!
question for you, on the oil filter cap, inside the 32mm socket, it looked like there was a smaller socket. Couldn't you use the smaller socket instead or do you have to go out and get a 32mm shallow? thanks
Okay I’m done the oil change but I made the mistake of using the T5 5 to drain that thing, I’ve got the oil all over my hand on the ground. I am also worried over tighten the 70 mm bolt
So I did my first oil change on 2017 x1. After a lot of research I went with BMW SAE 0W-20 LL17, primarily due to its long life rating. Bought 5 litres from dealer at $10 / lt.
@@sahil2441 BMW oil is just Pennzoil pureplus oil. There’s a good yt channel that has compared a lot of the major oil manufacturers, all seemingly good and within a hands reach of each other as far as quality, but with a large range of cost.
Most BMWs have ZF transmissions and this model X1 has 8spd auto. ZF recommends ZF LifeGuard 8 Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid for this transmission. There is a kit you can buy that has the filter and trans fluid. The filter is made into the transmission pan. I suspect any fluid such as ravenol specifically designed for 8 speed autos would suffice.
Would love to hear in the comments below which make/model of auto has the most difficult oil change procedure?
Obviously a 2017 BMW X1 xdrive 2.8 F48
Slightly less complicated than changing spark plugs on a Boxer engine.
Looks pretty easy to me though
I can't believe this is the only video about the service on this car. Thank you, really
Glad it helps!
Is like hunting for yeti lol

I think the drain that comes with the k&n is either 12 or 13mm.
Thanks a lot. After watching this video, I gained the confidence & knowledge to DIY the oil service on my wife's 2016 BMW X1 sDrive 20d.
Excellent work!

Thank you for non-metric compliment as I don't have a 32mm either. Much appreciated!

I learn a lot from your video. can you show how to change coolant 2017x1.
Tools so good ❤
Thanks for this, I'm about to dive in on mine and this video will cut the time it takes in half, I'm sure!

I didn’t muck around with the drain. Those plastic threads seem like a failure waiting to happen.
Super thank you👍
Im going to do this with my f48 sdrive soon. Very helpful post. Thanks! 👍
Glad it could be useful!
How did it go friend
@@NikosKatsikanis it was easy.
Thank you worked like a charm.
Thanks for this vídeo friend, greetings from México.

Nice car!
Awesome video. Thanks a bunch. What was the final torque for the filter canister? Drain plug?
25NM for both.
Really helpful!!

Great video! Any idea where is the rear jackpoint?? F48 2017 bmw x1
Hi, yes the rear jackpoint is under the rear axle differential. Find the black diff cover and move to center and just forward of that cover.
This applies to the BMW X2 as well.
Great! thanks for sharing!

Yes That is the new drain plug seal. Just swap in the new one.

I suggest a more zoomed out lenses hard to follow
what is the cable (electric of what?) near the filter?
what brand did you use for change your engine oil ?
Generic Walmart brand synthetic.
What kind of tool is for removing the little plug of canister cap?
Hi Gary. It’s a T55 Torx bit.

If It’s not leaking, it should be fine. Just remember to loosen it when the engine/and oil is cool on the next change to ease removal.
Which oil did you put ?
A pretty cheap synthetic oil that you can find at Walmart.

How much would typically cost at the service
In my area, around $120USD

In Luxemburg about 400 Euros.

Oil change
is ramps better than using a jack?
Easier when changing oil, etc. If I need access to wheels for brake jobs, etc. then I use a jack with jack stands.
Not Twin Turbo….
Yes that’s a mistake. TwinPower turbo, not twin turbo.
Learn Hollywood. Don't move the camera. Keep it steady. Oil 5W-30 6 liters, full synthetic.
No thanks. This is YT not Hollywood.
The car quite literally said OW-20 on the door panel.
what oil did u guys use ?
Synthetic Supertec
