Still holding out for a Final Fantasy 13 & 13-2 boundary break!
Nice video, although a few more areas would be worth exploring. For example there is a space elevator if you help a robot in a sidequest, this superstructure just sits in the ocean forever afterwards. Pascals machine village and the floating Cylinders later on as well as the interior of the big tower are also interesting.
Maybe do a NieR Automata Boundary break Part 2?
I want to see a boundary break on Shadow Man.
ok
That transition into the sponsor was pretty slick, I did not expect that.
Imagine you're in one of those "transported to a video game world/isekai" stories and you're just walking around doing quests when you get far enough out of town and find out everything is low poly, that's when you realize you're not the main character of this story, you're a side character or possibly an npc, if you were the main then stuff wouldn't turn low poly around you
That's a really interesting idea
I think there is an spc entry that talk about a copy of London that becomes "low detail" the further you go.
that'd be a scary feeling. would make everything even more empty, and claustrophobia on a bigger scale
Wtf
And then you look at yourself and realize that YOU are low poly as well, swapping to lower and lower LOD models and eventually just become a flat sprite
There’s a certain art to creating extreme low-poly versions of large areas and this game is a masterclass in efficient use of assets. There’s so much to consider, not just the number of polys, but also the amount and size of textures used in the overall model as well as what objects need to actually be represented in the scene. One of my favorite things about low-poly scene models is seeing what already-used textures they will use to approximate the overall color and shape from a great distance; you have so many options but it requires a lot of creativity and inspiration (and trial and error) to get “right” to enough of a degree to stay convincing. The illusion always breaks when you get closer than intended, but that’s the fun of it!
I just wonder if he was prompted to make this after the recent "discovery" of a whole new area hidden below the town, causing a huge freakout in the fandom, but turned out to be insanely good modders incorporating existing assets haha
yeah but it still looks kinda last last gen and even worse runs pretty bad
@@KaladinVegapunk Probably it came on the docket when the Switch port was announced but then they added the thing about the church.
@@michaelwesten4624 well I don’t know about PC but it runs pretty much flawlessly on even base PS4, and this sort of optimization is specifically for the relatively smaller RAM pool in consoles, it’s standardized so they can fine tune it specifically to balance rendering high detail objects in the immediate environment while also keeping low detail models in memory for faster loading. it’s not MEANT to look “good” at anywhere near this distance; it’s meant to create illusions, which is exactly why it’s fascinating. it’s like finding out how a magic trick works. you know it’s an illusion but the mechanics of it has the potential to be more entertaining than the trick itself.
The way LoD objects works in game engine is that they are the same object but programmatically reduced the rendering surfaces/polygons relative to the player distance. That way the GPU may reduce the workload. The game dev didn't really need "create" those low level models they literally turn down the "detail slide" from the full detail model. For objects that you can see but never reach they can prep the low level models in the modeler and load them as part of the scene.
at 15:09 with the white objects floating about? That looks like the top half of the heat haze effect. Once you pan the camera past its top you can see it start to kick in. That'd be my best guess and perhaps where greyed out liked that up top for easier placement editing.
it's to block out sunlight in the more enclosed areas
@@DolanDuking that's not how the sunlight works in this game
@@PixelOverload
I seem to see a "sun light" type of lighting, as common in open areas. Japanese games often use "shadow casting meshes" to block specifically sunlight in certain way, ffxiii does this
For the few bits of rendering I've been involved with it is exactly this. It's placed as a reflection point for the heat haze, as well as an effect spawn. This is actually some really nice detail though, as most games wouldn't bother placing a reflection point so high up. (This would only be useful if you pan the camera straight up. Considering this is a game that has a trigger for trying to stare up 2B's skirt it doesn't surprise me at all it has effects generation for extreme camera angles haha) It could also be an effect trigger (again for the haze effect) specifically for a cutscene trigger when entering that area.
@@bryguy062485
i've only had some amateur game making knowledge on Unity being focused mainly on the sound side of things & seen our programmers do similar techniques on desert scenes. I really appreciate the insight into the extra details you've explained though thanks to your prior rendering knowledge! It really fascinates me to learn more about it!
All I can say is that I'm glad I ended up buying this game. It was definitely worth it.
It’s so good!
I gotta buy it one day. I had only just started it when it was removed from Xbox Game Pass.
11:11 9S just following 2B as she runs in a circle like a madman is the most hilarious thing I've seen this morning
The white objects at 15:07 might be a visual indicator of some kind of heat distortion effect.
If you look closely in the video, the distortion effect only applies in the area immediately under the white object.
As a fairly difficult effect to see, it's beneficial for devs to be able to mark their locations somehow.
Ow. You might be right. I thought they may be additional illumination, but... That makes more sense. But maybe they are both in one time?
This was great and laughed at the Nier Church bit. I know it turned out to be a fan mod but I love it and so happy we got hype again for the game. Best thing ever.
Also can you guys do Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne or V, please?🥺🥺
YES! YES! YES! More or any Shin Megami Tensei !!
Legit one of the best games ever made
Idk about that but it's pretty good yeah
@@dazza2350 I do know about that and Nier is one of the best games ever made.
@@KiomonDuck you know what they say about opinions; everyone has one
Definitely one of the best
Automata was my first experience with the NieR series, and at first it didn't really grip me. I waited a long time to buy it, only grabbing it about a year ago. The story felt severely lacking in the early game and the gameplay didn't seem like anything special, so I put the game down and moved on to other things. Eventually, I decided to give the game another go, and I'm so glad that I did. I quickly found myself getting invested into the story, and the upgrades I unlocked made the gameplay so much more interesting and fun. The game ended up being one of the rare few that managed to get tears out of me, so bravo for that.
It was so great that in a desperation for more content, I went and bought NieR Replicant. I ended up loving that one as well, and both games are easily among my all time favorites. I definitely recommend giving them a go if anyone's not experienced them yet, but be prepared for some heavy feels.
This was exactly my experience with Nier Automata as well. Didn't think it had anything special in the beginning (what's the hype all about?) and left it for a while too. Thankfully I decided to give it another try, and the story got so engrossing after the midpoint that I couldn't put it away until the end. Now it's one of my favorite games. Need to play Replicant now.
@@leonardost A word of caution before you do, don't assume that Replicant is going to be more of the same. There are similarities, but the game is quite different.

Personally, i think that seeing the eyes and the tongue from inside is much more creppy than the characters having no eyes.
Absolutely love seeing this game resurge in popularity lately (even if the church was fake)
Would love to see other platinum games content on this channel like bayonetta or astral chain
Man i lowkey love this new guy. Risky move hiring on another person but damn y'all both have that same excitement for out of bounds mysteries. This ep was sick
I second this! I’m still amazed how well Snipey has filled his role on Boundary Break. Usually bringing a new host into an established channel that has been hosted by the same person for years, does not go well or at best, it’s just okay but you still prefer the original host. Kudos to Snipey for pulling it off and Shesez for picking such an excellent host.
i've known snipey for a little while now and i was fucking stoked that he got the job. he's always had this personality that he injects into his content, it's just that now he's getting to do it for more people. i'm glad more people are getting to experience the snipey vibes.
I don't get how people are so optimistic all the time about everything. I found him a little bit TOO happy for my tastes considering OG guy always sounds like he doesn't want to be here, the contrast with new guy being super excited all the time sounds weird to me. I'm def more of a pessimist in life though so all the constant happy comments on youtube about how they love this and that kind of drive me insane because I just assume they're doing it for lowkey upvotes.
Maybe I just don't buy Snipey's optimism and enthusiasm because I know that stuff can be faked, like David Dobrik everyone loved for years and years but then everyone found out he was pretty much a sociopath with a fake smile, so I rarely buy the fake happiness these online personalities are trying to sell. Acting is a job though, and most of the masses tend to believe it. That's always evident when folks get mad at people irl because a character someone is playing is someone they dislike when it's all just an act.
@@casedistorted Or you know, he just enjoys his job. I don't know if the co-host of a show where they go out of bounds in video games is equal to David Dobrik in anything other than being a RUclipsr
This guy is 10,000x more charismatic and significantly better at describing things. He doesn't repeat himself over and over. He doesn't use the same cadence for every sentence. He doesn't presume stupidity on the part of the viewer for concepts he's mentioned a hundred times in other videos (and maybe even several times in the same video). I love, love, love the idea of this channel but genuinely find it unwatchable most of the time, because it is full on annoying to listen to.
This guy is not annoying to listen to.
10:45 “-and pretty much just consumed by darkness. Which, I dunno, I guess is fun, maybe a little sad” *Veeerrry suiting for this game LMAO*
4:50 "But when it comes to thin objects like railings and crossbars, they get pretty hard to see sometimes -- almost to the point where you're kind of wondering why they're there to begin with."
That LOD may have been generated automatically. Alternatively, the mesh could've been designed at least partially by hand, with thin beams and whatnot being turned into just large flat surfaces with drawings of beams, before they decided on the appropriate texture resolution... and then they decided on a resolution so low that you can hardly see anything. However it ended up like that, maybe it just wasn't worth the effort to tweak it afterward.
7:20 "And you have a third [water] layer that seems to be attached to the camera position? And so when I move the camera up and down, it overlaps other objects in the scene."
Does the object-overlapping effect happen at close range, or only large distances? If this only happens at large distances, then it may not be attachment; it _may_ be imprecise math. I'm not sure why it would only affect the water, but...
Commonly, a 3D renderer will generate an extra image: a "depth buffer," which is essentially the 3D scene but with objects shaded in greyscale, where brighter surfaces are closer and darker surfaces are further. The renderer can use this depth buffer to optimize things. The renderer needs to ensure that objects actually get drawn in front of the things behind them; it can do this by sorting everything in advance (which takes effort and has its own limits), or it can use math and the depth buffer to save that effort.
The trick is that the depth buffer is encoded as one decimal number per pixel. Decimal numbers have precision limits. The format used could theoretically represent numbers into the millions. However, to make color calculations in general easier, the graphics card only uses values between zero and one. This means that it's not getting the full use -- the full precision -- out of the depth buffer.
(But zero and one relative to what? Well, historically, it's whatever maximum draw distance the game developer chose. But the higher that draw distance is, the less precise the depth buffer is overall: the precision limits that get applied to that zero-to-one decimal number get stretched over that larger distance. Of course, more modern engines can use math tricks to boost precision.)
So what happens when you run into precision issues? Rounding errors on a per-pixel basis. Commonly, these lead to Z-fighting, which happens when the graphics card can't tell which of two surfaces is in front (i.e. they are "the same depth"): the game essentially picks one and can potentially change its mind with each pixel. Sometimes, though, it's more orderly -- whole chunks of one object wrongly being covered up -- and that usually happens due to distance-related imprecision, where large chunks of an object will have their depth be rounded the wrong way. You can actually see something almost like Z-fighting arising from precision limits at 17:07, with some parts of the Tower flickering and becoming jagged as they move too far away to be rendered.
The distant scenery being covered by the water could be another example of precision limits. Maybe. Can't say for sure without breaking the engine open and seeing how it works. What confuses me is why this, if it _is_ the reason for what you're seeing, would only affect water and not other distant terrain. In particular, we don't see it with the Tower versus the void.
wow
WOW 2
Are low-poly models also created by hand, or are they processed automatically to look like that? For example a hole in the wall being represented by a patch of gray looks like something that must be decided by a human, but I can't imagine having to create two versions of each model just for the sake of low-poly.
Most of the time: downscaled Automatically or low-poly model is created in the beginning of the process and then a high-res one is created from it.
In this case they seem procedurally created, it also would explain the hole as it would "bake" a picture of the hole on the simplified mesh.
Naughty dogs in Uncharted 4 used an in house "baker" to have simpler low poly houses generated by their hi detail buildings.
@@1r0zz I see! This makes a lot of sense. Procedurally generated sounds reasonable.
In the old days I'm pretty sure low poly model's were hand made, now not so much
@@jamieh9466 and @CRAgamer
Yes in the old days, and some modern games there was the use of making a "3d skybox" for places seen at a distance with simplified hand made meshes. An example is dishonored 2.
Some games even projected a smaller model built inside the level, mostly below, onto a box around the actual level. Recent examples is titanfall2
It's crazy to think that there is so much loaded in at once and yet the performance is still phenomenal. I've seen countless games struggle with loading areas and to see Nier do it so effortlessly is honestly kind of funny. The game is just an absolute masterpiece in so many ways, there really isn't anything like it.
"effortlessly", when the game released it ran pretty poorly, it took quite a few patches until it ran like it does now, the PC port was a whole other story, downright unplayable at times. I'm more impressed that they managed to make a switch version which somehow runs better than every other version on release.
Performance is not one of the games strong points. It ran very poorly at release, and still doesn't run great now. One of the biggest culprits is a ludicrously expensive global illumination setting which seemingly has no purpose other than to fix a handful of lighting bugs, but can cost up to 40 FPS in the worse cases. For all it's strengths, it's more of a masterclass in how not to optimize a game.
Switch version is pretty epic :)
I've heard about it running poorly on pc before but I've personally had no problems playing on the highest settings. Maybe they fixed it at this point?
@@yoghurtstripper Most likely. They're just referring to when it first released, which was nearly 6 years ago so its very much going to run better now. I played it on ps4 and it ran pretty much perfectly but that was about a year or two ago
I always wanted to see the boundaries of this game. It’s pretty interesting that how much developers left these unfinished things and hid it underneath the games map. It like finding a Easter egg.
If you've never played _NieR:Automata_ because you think it'll be "weeb trash"/an excuse for the developer to indulge in his French maid fetish, rest assured, the game is great in SPITE of it's cheesecake surface elements. If these elements were removed, what makes the game great would remain completely unchanged. Seriously, play this game, it's an incredible experience.
I never thought about the subject but 2B kinda looks like a french maid, i always thought people have a thing for her because of the futuristic desing.
I’ve enjoyed the game a lot so far, but I’m wondering if the REALLY good part comes after ending B? Im playing through B right now and am not really seeing why people call it a masterpiece. I’m going to keep playing through because I still do like the game, but I’m wondering if how you described it starts at a certain point that I haven’t gotten to yet…
@@_.Dylan._ Yes.
I'd argue there's a loud part of the community that pushes people away rather than it mostly being people's preconceived notions. The Neir games have always been rad and weird in good ways.
@@sciverzero8197 That is the only answer I need thanks!
Those white objects in the desert that you can only see from very high above, are what create the "wavy" effect to show that the desert is incredibly hot. There are a lot of areas in the desert that don't have the effect at all.
Can you do the other Nier/Drakengard games
It's great to see boundary breaks for a game that's NOT a new release that I haven't played yet because it makes no sense to buy games at full RRP when it'll be on sale for less than half in a few years time!
Automata's been out for ages.
though it feels like automata never goes on sale.
Actually buying games at full price makes sense when you want to support the game or if you know you'll get your money's worth. Not every game is worth $60 when it comes out.
I agree!!!
@@AttacMage I got the game for 7 bucks
Snipey sent me. Somehow I missed this one last month. Thanks for the heads up, my dude. You're an excellent co-host.
Right on time before this game will come out for Nintendo Switch in October. 👌🏻
So glad Shesez has got some help to balance out the upload schedule. New host is a good addition, great channel y'all.
This is a game i have been waiting for on this channel, It has to have some seriously good optimizations going to have so much of the city area loaded from the factory, even if it is low resolution.
This game was designed to run at 60 fps on the base PS4 and it shows. They had to optimize.
I’ve wanted this forever! Thank you
Shesez
Glory to Mankind!
The Church is here I can see it in your video I swear… I swear :((
I love the Nier games! Gestalt/Replicant/Automata. I was really disappointed when you said the video was too long. It wasn't long enough! lol, I would love to see this revisited with a more in-depth exploration of all the locations, boss fights, events cutscenes in different angles. Especially the locations from the original Nier, Emil's room and the library up close. I don't go on twitter that much so I didn't see the viewer requests. Please revisit this game and the other Nier games! I would sit through an hour+ long in-depth video going through everything.
I love how I can hear Snipey's curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery in his voice. :D
There was a lot of cool stuff in this!
Please do xcde eventually I wanna see how different it is from og
10:51 "i guess its fun, maybe a little sad" yeah, that's NieR
Being unfamiliar with NieR but familiar with Final Fantasy XIV, this video makes me wonder what tricks are being used in XIV's geometry in places I haven't bothered to check myself already. I wonder how many tricks from NieR they borrowed for the NieR raids in that regard.
I’m surprised this game hasn’t been done before, such a beauty. Thanks for the video
I'm so happy to see this because Nier has become one of my favorite series and sometimes I feel like it doesn't get the attention it deserves. Now we wait for the Nier Replicant episode lol You guys always amaze me.
Welcome Snipey :) Fascinating stuff already, thanks for sharing with us ❤️
Hope you have a great day too bud, loved the vid!!!!!
you should do a series on the old 1990s/2000s pc games..they where full of stuff you found when the game glitched..
It's always fascinating how they workaround those, behind the scene stuff.
Nier Automata is to this day probably my favorite game. And the entire out of bounds world I have discovered through speedrunning is one big reason for me personally I believe. It has something so magical to it, being able to explore the map from such secret angles. Great video, keep it up!
People would search "Boundary Break" way more than "shezes"
You'll hit a million subs before you know it I guess
I want a part 2 of this xD More Nier Automata Boundary Breaks!!
I was wondering just the other day if this episode would ever be a thing, and now here we are. Thanks, Boundary Break!
Love the boundary break alot guys but I would love some more region break if possible keep up the amazing content 👍
I really want to see a part 2! I want to see how the Simone fight in the Carnvial works :))
I've been pushing for this episode for a long time, and I couldn't be happier that it is finally here.
It would be so cool to see Bayonetta, I’ve always been curious
Great video about a great game. Thanks for this. :) Snipey is doing a really good job so far.
Nier: Automata is a very unique game where your perspective going into the game is entirely different if you know anything about the first NieR or not. I can only imagine what someone who never played NieR was thinking when they first played Automata.
The thing I know for sure is that the praise the game gets is well deserved
Never played a nier game before, but played A LOT of different games in my years. In short: i've 100% nier automata in a week and went down to say that this could have been the peak gaming experience of all time, but the developers didn't put enough effort in the technical side. Everything thing is there: beautiful story, strong emotions, magnificent soundtrack, art style on point but for the love of good fix the fk graphics. This game really needs a remake cause right now we are seeing only 60% of its potential
Which perspective is better? Automata was my first game
@@stanthorpe99 yeah it sucks that the game was made on a low budget, but also sad that there won't be any more nier games :(
You missed the table ontop of the building in the main hub that is used for cutscenes with adam and eve
I'm gonna register this to my Watch later list, I'm playing this when it releases on Switch later this year!
To anyone who has not played this game. Do it. This game was a top 3 of this gen
Great episode, nice job on the person who done this, you're really good at it, keep up the good work.
You can also see a good portion of what gets loaded in and out of the map when using the in-game Debug Menu (which is a lot of fun to just mess around with).
It blew my mind seeing how much of the Amusement park is still loaded in when you go to the Desert.
Nier Automata is a masterpiece, I'm happy we are getting the port on the Switch. 💕
Fascinating video! Was hoping you guys would eventually tackle Nier in Boundary Break
Interesting, that building floating above the Tower seems to be the opera house with the resource module "God Box" crashed into it.
Thanks for doing this it was so cool to see! Could you please also do nier replicant? I would really love to watch it if you did!

I kind of forget sometimes that this channel is not called Boundary Break.
Are those "whacky white objects" what cause the heat mirage effect? It seems like it
*2B or not 2B*
THAT...is the question.
But srsly, no footage of the desert where the giant Emil heads are? Damn...
So cool to see behind the scenes. A lot of techniques used to save performance and time!
My favorite game, so happy you did a video on it!
12:30 would love to see the camera shift from the intended perspective to the out of bounds perspective just to give the scope of what is hidden out of bounds.
That building from the park that loads outside the tower is the version you see if you revisit the park after clearing the resource unit
"Take the camera anywhere we want" in Nier Automata, eh?
Been a long time coming, pretty sure I requested an Automata boundary break 3 years back, this popping up in my feed was a very pleasant surprise.
15:09 Looks like those white objects might be there to obstruct light, maybe? The first one seems to cast a shadow
The orb image is a stock effect from the early 90s. It was apart of a software suite you could buy back then. I can't remember wtf it was called. Doom used it as well.

Seeing what is out of bound is so interesting.
at 18:38 that building from the amusement park i believe is when you destroy one of the floating towers machines near the end of the game. it crashes to the ground or explodes or something.
FINALLY YOU CRAZY MAN I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR IT FOR 5 YEARS!!! Could've added more though. Now do NieR.
9:53 that camera angle of the bunker is insane, would've been sick to have it in game when escaping with the commander while fighting.
I mean, in this game you have to be few feet from something to see it low poly 😅🤣
I love this game but the render distance is ridiculously low.
What, no secret church? JK. Also the Amusement Park has the best music track in the game! ( yes, all 3 versions! )
would be nice if you have checked also the tower at the ocean, the one tower where it appears when you finish half-wit inventor quest
Can you guys do half-life: alyx? its my favorite game right now and I would love to see the behind the scenes
