We had an 87 Tercel 4WD wagon SR5. Not sure why the horsepower ratings were higher in 86 but ours had only 62 bhp and you needed to work every single horse on the engine on most days, especially if you wanted to use the A/C. In 1989, my family drove up to Syracuse from NJ to pick me up for Thanksgiving. Problem was, driving back, we had 6 people and luggage to transport. With only 5 seats, my sister sat in the way back surrounded by my grandmother and aunt's luggage. Other luggage went on the roof. Fully freighted, we drove 200 interstate miles home in a snow storm with the engine under serious load the whole way.The wagon was seriously put to the test but handled it beautifully...and even seemed to like it. My favorite driving challenge/experience of all time`! Thanks for reviewing this!

As a kid, you’d of rather walked to school than get dropped off in this. 35 years later you want to own it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I just bought one of these for 500 bucks, 480,000 km. Little rusty but everything works including the 4 wheel drive. Just a beater to bomb 💣 around in. POS but actually in the city 🏙 fun to drive…. I lied 🤥 radio doesn’t work but all mechanical stuff, lights etc do

Found out 4WD Tercel for less than most people's monthly vehicle payment! I call it the Six Hundred Bucks and a Clutch Tercel! They are fun cars! I had a 2wd Tercel as my first car and always wanted 4wd.

Summer of 1984. I had just finished my sophomore year of high school. My friend invited me to the movies to see Meatballs Part 2. He picked me up in one of these, brand new. It was his mom's new car. I thought it looked like a shoe box. But found it interesting that it was 4 wheel drive, which pretty much wasn't needed in Los Angeles.

I was trying to remember what this car was for a while, fun to actually see one working (I remember my dad had one in my early years, not sure when he gave it up). I wasn't sure if it was Toyota but I did know that it was 4WD capable, and it looked like a box. Thankfully that is all I needed to know in order to find it.

Love this car! If I had been old enough to drive and afford a car in 1986, I would have definitely considered a Tercel 4WD wagon. I remember seeing them and liking them as a kid. Like you said, so few have survived. I don't like that crazy tailpipe the current owner put on the car though.

@@bronsonvanwingerden4930 Cool, glad to hear it! I think for this car, a stock style exhaust would suit it best, or maybe a slightly deeper tone muffler, but that fits in the stock location.

I'd recommend not shifting the 4wd while moving, it just puts extra stress on the trans which is extremely hard to find. And the cupholder is the giant hole of a center console. You also never mentioned that you cant use that extra low gear unless it's in 4wd. It's a 6 speed in 4wd and a 5 speed in fwd.

It would be nice if Toyota made something like this today, that meets current safety standards and with modern technology (though not too complex, simple is better). A car like this would suit many people's needs. They don't need a pickup, SUV or Crossover. Though I guess the RAV4 and new Corolla Cross are the closest vehicles we have to this today.

So yea.. It was covered in Marvin the Martian stickers, it may have won me the ugliest car of the class of 1997, and it may have shook like it was going to fly apart when I tried to break 100mph going downhill with a cello sticking out the back, but what I wouldn't give for one more legendary adventure in that blue box with wheels. I miss you old blue, you always got this 17 yr old teenager to school on time, and to work to flip burgers on the weekends, but you could take on a dirt road in the middle of the woods or run thru the snow like a champ. I miss you, my old Blue Bullet. You were amazing!!

We had one of those my Family bought because of the fourwheel drive, It was SOOO slow it had no power. Load it up with two kids and the back full air on was laughable. You just accept it that's about it. It was fantastic in the snow and was very dependable. We kept it and used it as a Truck basically cause we lived on a huge farm.Got a Subaru Turbo Wagon awd.. Much better car and much faster ...

The 4WD system on the Tercel mechanically locks the front and rear axles together; so it's a proper part-time 4WD ... you will experience wheel scrub and drivetrain binding if you use the system on dry pavement.
