How amazing is it to see a 36 year old Corolla with only 30K on it! It'll last another 20 years and 200,000 miles if its cared for (and parts can still be found for it.)
@@derekbartlett6142 are you still enjoying the car 11 months later? This thing is just so cool. The only thing I would do is fix the rust on that fender, by re-welding in a new patch of sheet metal. That’s it. That’s all I would do to this car. One thing I noticed throughout Zack’s video driving it was that distinctive engine noise mixed with the humming from the tires. Super distinctive and nostalgic. I know it could be A LOT CLEANER for the super low miles, but hey, it’s transportation that never fails is the goal. I have a classic same year toyota, 1986 2 tone blue Camry liftback 5 speed manual. Absolutely LOVE IT. Blue interior still looks brand new after almost 37 years and 116,000 miles.
Nah. Up there in the rust belt it'll be folded in half in a couple years, especially with the rot you can already see starting on it. Too bad. Otherwise those are good for many hundreds of thousands of miles, but the Japanese weren't quite up to snuff on their metallurgy. As quick as a Detroit Big 3 car would rust, these ones were really bad for it. I had an '86 Celica, an '88 Celica a '90 Corolla and an '86 Nissan 4x4 pickup and they all irreparably rusted by the 150k mile mark. Every one of them still ran perfect though. Wait, except the '88 Celica. That one spit the diff out onto the pavement. It wasn't anything to do with the way I drove it though, I promise.
I remember in the early nineties, our Dodge Shadow was rear-ended and thereby in the shop. My mother had a 1989 Corolla as a rental. It might as well have been a Mercedes for all we knew... it just felt so solid, well-made, easy to drive, frugal, and spunky. In comparison, the Dodge was a dog, couldn't get out of its own way, and it was a fragile piece too.
I have a corolla ea82 hatch from 1985 with a 1.3 l 12 Valve and the thing actually likes to rev and drives pretty good in 2nd and 3rd for only 75 hp. It is a fun, reliable car and great for beginners . And btw love the vids man you're doing a good job!
In a family of used cars dealers, generation after generation of comparable cars, Corollas, Camrys though often not the best looking, they outlast their competitions. That's why after 10, 15 years or more the Toyotas still hold the strongest value
Not too many 1980s cars would be suitable as a daily driver in the 2020s, but I can totally see this 1986 Corolla standing up well to that task. And yeah, I love the way 1980s Toyotas feel when you drive them. Light and nimble. And no extra 1000 pounds of safety equipment to save us from ourselves. We will never see cars like this made again.
Memory lane for me as this was my first car. Bought from a family friend for, I think, $350. I was at least the second teenage driver and I thrashed mine, but it got me around. It may have had no power, but I crept up to 105 mph a couple of times and it cruised up I5 at 90 for a good while. They're rare now and I get a little nostalgic when I see them.
In middle school, my best friend's mom drove an '86 Chevy Nova (same car). It was painfully slow, but didn't seem to bother her (she had a Chevette before it). I always found Toyota's very angular interiors a little odd (squares everywhere) but it's impressive that the seat fabric and door panels look so high quality on the one you're driving. I also remember that her Nova didn't have the squeaks and rattles that my mom's Olds did.
Man seeing this beautiful car almost brings a tear to my eye....I bought a 1985 AE82 sedan same color as the one in this video and sadly it was totaled by someone who ran a stop sign and crushed the unibody. These cars are hidden gems and fun/cheap to drive, i'm glad more people are appreciating them!
fun fact! the slightly later chevy nova of this ae82 had a version w the 4age!! and because of how LIGHT this car is, its scary fun to ride in considering it has close to double the hp of this ae82! but unfortunately its rare
I guess you can buy the AE82 Corolla and swap the 4A-GE engine in. It will be quite hard, but if you like working on your cars it's worth it, and you'll have fun doing it with someone else.
My dad's old boss has an 85' Rose Grey Corolla LE with only 107K miles on it, and she is the original owner. She hasn't driven it in about 6 years, but, it has been garaged and its mint. She is giving it to me for my first car. It's an amazing car, and I can't wait to restore it.
The first year of this body style/generation was 1984. I had a 1984. It was a great vehicle. It got me from POINT A to POINT B and back to POINT A. I also used it for my job when I was a Delivery Driver for Pizza Hut. It had a surprisingly SMOOTH RIDE for CHEAP/BARE BONES VEHICLE. The A/C blew very cold. Probably colder than the A/C in my 2007 Toyota Avalon Limited, which I still have. I would love to find another Corolla Sedan from 1984-1987 in good shape with low miles.
I had this car in 1992 -2000 manual. Great car 27-32mpg Gas was $1.19 all day long! Car got a hole in the floor from salt/rust. Stalled car thru flood water still started. Worked for for many more years. Car radiator overheated cracked the block :( Caused a leak. Bought a 2000 Subaru 2.5RS after that. Still miss both cars :)
Mine was a blue 5 door hatchback Owned it when young in the 1990s and didn’t know anything about maintenance. It was good and reliable, got me from A to B for a couple of years. While driving one day, the car suddenly died. Turned out the timing belt broke. Fine little car. Still think about after all these years.
Starting in 1985 for this generation of Corollas (it was a new model in 1984), AE 82, a four speed auto was available in the LE and Le Ltd. models. A four speed auto was available in the first year AE86, 1984.
The years between mid 1980s and 1990s won't be complete without the presence of these FWD AE82 sedans/hatchbacks. It's not just in US and Canada. It's everywhere in any part of the world where Toyota cars is selling really well.
My friend's father is a cleric and he has one, my friend modified it for an 1800cc engine 😆, and the cleric says that it has become strong and that it is a blessing.
I have a hatchback AE82 (the fx-16 gts), with the 4A-GE in it, paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. I absolutely love this car, and will drive it 'till it dies. Currently at 160.000 miles, so it's far from being dead x)
My first car out of high school in ‘94 (‘86, bought used). Exact same model, color, and hubcap. It was a complete POS compared to my fellow high school graduates with their Integras, 240SX, and new Civics. But it served its purpose. Definitely did NOT help me in my quest to find a girlfriend.
ah man, that nostolgia hit! This was my first car. I bought one for $1200 in 2001. I can smell that car (a little hint of mold I guess, when it rained hard it used to leak near the foot pedals). I had so much fun with this. I used to drift with it by hitting the E brake.
Wow, what a great time capsule! I love it, I want it! I'm such a Toyota fanboy, lol! A bit of rust, but not much for a Chicago car. I guess the 30,000 miles explains that. Must have belonged to a little old lady who drove it to church once a week. Low trunk lift over that we take for granted today, but that was a bit deal back in the 1980s, even the early 1990s. Hard to believe this car was one of the vehicles setting the benchmark back then. Toyota came a long way in 10 years, let alone 20 or 30. My 2003 Corolla looks futuristic compared to this one, haha!
Mom had a Corolla sedan of the same year and tyke but a light Brown/dark bronze color. Served well for about 7-8 years until she sold it in 2005/6 soon after we moved to AZ bad got a 2005 Nissan Altima.
I brought one of these cars today! Pretty good condition with a tad bit of clear coat peel, only con it has a clutch in needing of replacement which I shall do!
Some AE82s came with the same 4AGE as the AE86, such as my car which is the lift back seca version of the AE82, awesome cars great fun with the more powerful engine, I love mine!
My AE86 is down so I almost picked one of these up as a daily until I stumbled on a low mile 86 Cressida. I really like these old Corollas a lot though. I'd still buy one if I weren't eyeing a GR Corolla to fill my last parking space.
My friend let me take his out on Finnish back roads, so much fun (his was a 5 speed though). Nothing like tossing these things around on tiny gravel roads with de-studded 13" snow tires
story time: i once went to work for like a week at a turkish fast food place , there was an abandoned ae82 hatch, the thing was in such bad shape the rust had molded , but the interior was like new, even the plastics after sitting at least 5 years in 40+°C summers , god i wish i could have taken that one for a ride XD

First it's carburetor, Aisan V-type- it's good carburetor when it's working, but when it will broke... It's carburetor hard for fix, the most dificalt part for tune, vacuum autometic idle control system. Second part, it's second and third spark plugs inside exhaust manifold. If you have promlems with carburetor, and pours candles, you will have burnt hands all the time. The third quation is corrosion of rear arches, in your car all body will be fine, but arches will rotten, and this rotten will eating all body. In any way this fifth generation of corolla, for my oppinion better then six generation (E90). E90 as for me simplified version of E90, instead of an independent rear suspension, they made a semi-independent beam, a simpler caburator, the body, in my opinion, became less stylish.

Yeah the Colt was a pile. US manufacturers were never great with the compact car. They phoned it in on pretty much all of them back then.

That engine is still being used in Toyota forklifts today but I think on OHV configuration..
Why can't we get simple cars like this anymore.
Partly regulatory, partly also that most people don't want that, even when they insist they do.

My aunt had one bought it new had over 400k miles on it when she got rid of it and yes it still ran and drove it just completely rotted out
i have this car and still in good condition
