AE82 vs all the AE86's - Corolla Battle!

- The FX goes to an all Corolla track day. This is very likely the FX’s first time ever on a race track in it’s 34 years of existence! The event took place in Willows, California at Thunderhill Raceway. The track was the 2 mile west course that has a nice mix of elevation changes and technical corners. The event was admittedly an all AE86 event and I was able slip my AE82 into the mix. It’s still a Corolla with a 4AGE engine from the same era after all.
I trailered the FX to the event simply because I didn’t want to hold back. I didn't want the fear of a breakdown to stop me from exploring the full potential of the AE82. I didn't know how well the FX would stack up against an AE86 but I was excited to find out!
The first session out I was just getting familiar with the FX and the track. We were running the West course in reverse which I had never done before. Nothing major broke on the FX but the front drivers side wheel hub got a little loose. Tightening the axle nut isn't hard as long as you have a 32mm socket, which I did not bring with me. My new AE86 friends came to the rescue! @nichs_niche had the right socket and the FX was back on the track.
The second session is where the fun really started. The FX was doing a great job of keeping up with the 86's on the track and it was a marvelous thing to experience so many 4AGE's singing together. I was able to have a little battle with @superstarolla and he was a heck of driver!
Toyota people are the best! All the drivers at the event were great to talk and so many beautiful cars.
There were 16v 4AGE's, 20v 4AGE's, 7AGE's, BEAMS, 4AGE's with ITB's, a Starlet with a 4AGE and a v8 swapped AE86 (1uz)! The sound on track was heavenly.
The cherry on top was the FX going up against @bgrs_grant in the @battlegarage_rs shop car with a 7AGE 20v build that was making some serious power.
Driving the Corolla FX on the track was different than taking it on the touge. On a touge, you tend to drive at 8/10's and never really push the car to its limit. On the track, however, you can drive as fast as possible.
***Thank you to @ae86mikey and @battlegarage_rs for providing some of the footage to use for this video!
Also, thumbnail picture was provided by and shot by @jaguirre80!
Thanks again to the event organizers and the good Toyota people at the event. - Авто/Мото
Literally, the little FX that could. Love how the gaps just open up every time the 20V has a chance to stretch its legs.
Love these cars, I will get one besides my Honda Civic one day.
just upgrade the brakes, the car is doing well.
And tbh, the most you'd likely need would be some proper pads and some braided steel brake lines with DOT4 fluid. I could also see a proportioning valve coming in handy if the brake bias isn't optimal, but time will tell.
My AE101 with 4age 20v BT is running stock brakes with endless pads and its doing wonderfully
I say upgrade braking system and tires. See if the suspension can keep up
Oil cooler with a temp gauge with keep your bearings out of trouble. All 4AGEs usually spin the last crank bearing closest to the transmission due to the way the oil circulates in these engines. That oil gets really hot but you only have to worry about it when pushing it on track days
Blew 2 motors this way. Oil flow sucks in 4age.
@@mikemikeyee in what setting? I would like to prevent that
Yeah even kaicho (runningfree86) blows up half a dozen motors a year, and he's got oil cooler w/reloc, dry-sump, accu-sump, and the full build regalia.
What we need is crankshafts with larger oil galleries and aluminum block with special design to allow for larger, higher volume (not pressure, volume) oil pump (from 2JZGTE or something)
@@ToreDL87 I was just gunna say, should also throw in a beefier oil pump to keep oil flowing up top.
@@supercattelephone Yeah, needs to be more flow to avoid it heating up at the last journal.
I asked around and some are thinking about making aluminum 4age blocks, but that was 4-5 years ago, nothing yet.
Issue with 4A-GE is it literally started as a grocery getter motor based on an almost half-decent Ford design.
The engine block itself just isn't physically beefy enough to sustain the revs required to make power.
Sure, can be jazzed up to respectable numbers, but with almost no reliability, nzae86 tried and he barely got 20hrs out of it.
We're honestly better off with Millington 16v 300whp+ N/A engines, and I say Millington because those have as much heritage with Ford as the 4A-GE's do (so it wouldn't be a crime).
Yay! My Starlet made it in the video!!
I couldn't leave it out. But honestly, it deserves a bigger highlight video.
Wow that gearing is great! The revs climbs so freely!
Definitely! It's nice to never fall out of the power curve.
@@sushpants Awesome driving, my brother had a white Toyota Corolla FX16 back in the 90's, they we were such awesome, they dont make them as good as that anymore, They were, twin cam flying machines!
Nice getting to meet you and run with you. Hopefully we get to battle again soon. Keep up the great content!
Thanks SoyKraut! We definitely will :D
Best content ever! I think it needs a foot cam though.
I think I'll set it up for next time :D
@@sushpants When’s the next time tho?
That 1UZ swap looked great too
The 1UZ car was done beautifully. It looks like @ae86mikey didn't cut any corners.
The 85WHP guy should talk to Garage4AGE, that dude knows exactly how to squeeze every bit of juice out of that engine.
Already watch their content! I should mention that 85WHP was at 4400ft elevation. It made 101WHP corrected for altitude. Still sad face. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ae85 be like:
I think he was meaning 85 Kw not 85 Hp, that just doesn't sound right
So stoked every time I see an upload. Thunderhill looks like so much fun.
The 20v sounds great. Awesome driving too.
That was awesome. The edit was perfect... and the sound!
Congrats on getting out there! We need more FX's on track!
Just an absolute awesome video all round!
brilliant setup! love it! ❤
love seeing you upload man :D
:D Thanks Suderp!
Such a sick video! Great driving, the corolla absolutely rips and sounds amazing doing it. 😄
I love this content, ya gotta do more track days! 😃
Haha! That was so much fun to watch. I think all the little FX needs is more racing!
Man, it sounds magical! Couldn’t help humming along to it. So awesome to see you drive it so well
Man that was fun to watch, the FX is running great
The sounds in this video!! Amazing man, AE86 and AE82 content is always appreciated.
That little FX killed it out there. Great job man. Reliability parts and seat time!
i really like your editing. so worth it!
Really fun to watch! Nicely edited too.
Keep on posting I love it
First!
Edit: the car sounds phenomenonal as always
I like the cliffhanger in the beginning :)
this is called the perfect setup !!! nice !!!!
The track looks like a lot of fun. From what I can see an LSD and more tire could help. It could also be more tailhappy, at least for my taste. With a bit of load change oversteer you could position it better.
I hope my english is ok.
He already has an LSD in this 6 speed gearbox but yeah the stock one isn't very sharp. Agree for the tires and the tailhappy thing
@@Miky9560 doesnt the C-52 in the fx16 has open diff?
@@FronkG yes but he has the c160 w/ LSD which comes factory on some late ae111 chassis equipped with the 20v blacktop engine
@@Miky9560 he's got non-LSD C160... I guess he's already planning to put an aftermarket one.
So hyped!!!
You can really see how happy the motor is, none of the other cars can get close.
You got my respect, your project is amazing. It shows how much fun we can have with our little cars.
I firmly believe that one doesn't need a big sports car to have fun, many hatchbacks can be easily modded to be more than enough if you have reasonable expectations.I really hate people who instantly shit on these kinds of cars, very ignorant.I have a Civic, because I love Honda, because it's affordable, reliable, but fun and well built.Same goes for Corollas really.
such a great video. keep up the awesome content
Thanks John!
Nice editing in capturing the friendly competition and atmosphere
Love how clear the sound in this video, very very clear sound I can hear the music of the 4age sound so clear.... I'm subscribing 👌👌👌👌👌
Awesome man 1st of ur videos I’ve watched!
Awesome work and enjoy video every time blessing.
Looks like great fun. Nice editing.
This is a great vid keep up the good work 👍
Great Content! I usually hate in car POV footage, but this is awesome!
this just make me want to rebuild my E80 corolla properly even more. seeing how the dash is exactly the same, makes me want to achieve similar things like yours do. running on touges, and also running on trackdays. Thanks for the quality video as always! your 4AGE's sound never cease to amaze !
This looks and sounds like a blast.
Great job you killed it man. Loved seeing and hearing the FX at open throttle seem to handle very well. Big ups
Thanks!
Looks like you had fun, thanks for uploading..
She seemed quite balanced and I'm floored by how well you were keeping up with the other guys, Great job! Maybe try different tire compounds next track day?
Your car sounds awesome! What an eargasm! 👏🏁
thats a very cool car you got there, looks fun as hell on track
Thanks algorithm. Great video. Love the induction noise coming from this engine.
Looks great!!! Man that starlet with a 4a in it!!! Dream car!!!!
For me being a vw guy, this is one of my favourite channels, humble build, and making what you have work, which could take many by surprise, looking forward for the next upload!
Great vid, car sounds and looks awesome. Nice!
Man that guy in the FX can drive. 😃

This puts a smile on my face, awesome!
Awesome video! looks like you had a blast
The sound always gets me
Missing my ae111 blacktop with poncams hahaha, should have never sold that car.
Not sure how I missed this video, great work Sush! This looks like a super fun event with lots of similar cars to play with on the track. Awesome shots and compilation from other videos, really captures the excitement of track days.
Mr Pants that was an excellent video!

Amazing sounds
Nice vid!
Wow, very impressive!!! You were able to keep up with the RWD cars. Nice job.
This is legendary 👍
Thanks niko!
The Toyota Corolla FX-16 GT-S being my dream first car, seeing a youtuber own one, daily drive it and upgrade it is a helluva lot of fun for me! I appreciate your content and you just earned a new sub!
Man, that thing sounds great!
Awsome video
Sounds SOOOO good
Awesome video love these cars your car did great
Thanks for sharing and for the tag! Great driving and awesome build! (this is @Frostvectron)
also, would be interested in "4AGE (and friends) ASMR" video of just the raw wall camera footage from a session!
That sounds amazing.
More camber right up front ! Amazing car the fx is 🙌🏻🙌🏻
best video i've seen in a while, love that fx
Thanks!
FX is going great against the other Corolla's and sounding amazing as usual, looked like a fun day and was a good watch 👍 I think upgrading your brakes and aquire another set of wheels with semi slicks for events will transform the car on the track.
Over here in New Zealand I swapped my AE92 brakes out for AE111 2 piston calipers with Celica rotors on the front and larger AE111 brakes on the rear along with aw11 braided brake lines. Made a great upgrade on a budget.
You smashed it!
Love this video. Great ae86s and great racing. 👍🏽
Thanks Frank!
This is great content
Respect brother this build makes me want to build a Fx
Looks like a lot of fun out there
That looks fun af!
Come run with us at the SCCA event. Once you have your TA license you can run against us!
This is great stuff
awesome!!
great video! Reminds me of my old NASA days chasing down FRS/BRZ cars and passing them in my turbo tercel
It sounds so nice 😊!
I don't think it needs anything, just more seat time, that was AWESOME!! Car is running great!
What a madman! I really want a AE82 now...
The sound of ITBs on high rpms
Love it
Same
One of the best videos made bro... Absolutely love it.... I wish i can take my 20vavlve to the track like this
Love it bro the Corolla is so fast vs the 86s. 4age power 💪
Correct me if I'm wrong, there seems to be a few corners where you rely on letting go of the gas, you would benefit a lot of left foot braking on a FF car. You're struggling with the steering (and I can feel your pain if the AE82 steering is the same as the AE92, it's heavy as sh...) and kinda toasting your front tires.
Other than that I think you don't need any upgrades, just seat time, the setup seems pretty well sorted and ready to provide you hours of lapping!
Always nice to see your videos!
the best video dude so much fun, great attitude, great little cars going for it.
put wide sweet little JDM wheels and sticky tires on it its great as it is.
Awesome video! My first track days were at Thunderhill Raceway West. It is an awesome track for lower powered cars. People I spoke to there said the key to success on that track is good tires and brakes.
RUclips didn't show me this until 3 days later which I'm gutted about! But dang the FX did fantastic! Had the video playing on the home theatre system cranked up and the 4A's just sang through my speakers like a hymn or some kind haha. It was great.
I reckon some bigger brakes will assist with being able to dive a bit more into some of those corners.
Fantastic video and love the eurobeat bits because they're always neat. :p Keep it up!
Great great footage. I was gonna buy the same car but it slipped between my fingers. Glad to see you running with the 86s.
Love this car. It's performing amazing man
We need more content like this
Awesome car awesome video, you need to make more 😊
