    Yes to all of this!! I have 4 Rex’s and they are soooo dramatic!! “I’m so thirsty!” *faints* but I will say, it does make it easy to know when they need water. I keep all of them in plastic nursery pots and bottom water, to try to avoid the dreaded powdery mildew.

    I consider myself pretty good with plants, so when i saw this STUNNING small rex begonia at walmart for like $4 I impulsively bought it. It died within a week of me bringing it home hahaha man was that deflating to the ego. I just set up a greenhouse cabinet and I want try a begonia in there. Great advice in this vid, thank you!

    I love your celia begonia.....that's the only one I have that I've actually managed to keep alive. Yours's is purdy. Also, I was burning mine near my window. I put up a frosted window privacy screen on my lower window and it diffuses the light perfectly without needing to use a curtain.

    Sometimes I feel that after watching some informative plant videos I’m still left guessing on some things but you really hit the nail on the head 😝 very informative. My begonia Rex has been in my bathroom with a medium size window that gets bright morning sun but not a lot during the day, so I’m gonna place her near the side of a west window with a bit more indirect light. I’m hoping she’ll do better ❤️ I def noticed she’s a drama queen! I just recently went a little to long not watering and she let me know by getting some brown tips

    I have four Rex begonias and a angel wing begonia, and from personal experience I like to let them almost completely dry out (or only water when they start to really get droopy) instead of letting them stay moist. I have read an article on them in which they are refereed to as "jungle cacti", who really love humidity but like to only be watered when they start to droop. I'm not sure if this is actually correct, or if the article was just plain wrong, but it is totally working for me! Root rot is begonias mortal nemesis (and second is powdery mildew). Not saying this method is going to work for everyone, but it does work for me, so I thought i'd share!

      If you do decide to get a begonia, check out Steve’s Leaves. He is a well known begonia grower and the quality of the plants I’ve received have all been impressive on arrival. You can also buy a variety that blooms frequently if you like flowers. I received a begonia is the beginning of Jan 2021 with a bloom on it and it has been flowering consistently since then.

    Thanks for this video! I’m trying to figure out how deep the begonia is supposed to be planted. Like should the base be fully under the soil? Or the top even with the surface? Another way? I got one that has dirt pretty high in the container and looks like it was dumped. There are unfortunately roots EVERYWHERE and the soil is really soggy. I tried to break it up a little just to get some perlite in there, but got nervous. Definitely seems like it was sitting in water at the store. Squeezing the pot makes it drip. The last video I opened before this, the lady pulled them out of their containers, ripped the bottom half off and, swished a hole up the middle under the plant, and potted them together in a big pot with way too much soil. I gasped a little. The whole video was rough. Seemed like she just has them as seasonal decoration. Treating them like that, they prob are! Anyways, I’ll keep looking. There are like 7 little fuzzy nubs poking up through the dirt. It’s so soggy I wanted to check for soggy/rotting roots, but I’m not sure how, with spiderweb-like roots. They snap so easily. This is my first begonia. I’ve seen many other creators talk about them, but it was 2$ at Walmart so I figured it’d give it a shot! It has 3 leaves. One has a crispy section between a bifurcated center vein. Def seems like it grew that way, not damaged after. Kinda odd. The other 2 look healthy tho. Thanks for all the info!

I was freaking out about my Kit Kat Begonia, I moved it from my room to a lighter room and it started dropping and has little dried looking spots on her leaves. Now that I started caring for her and put her back in my room it seems like she’s going to be okay. And she has a lot of tiny stems with leaves growing. I hope she gets as big as yours! 😍😍

    I have two Rex Begonias that I think I'm finally starting to figure some sort of a watering schedule. I water mine with a 50/50 mixture of rain water and filtered water only. I have pulled a many dried leaves and stems from not watering it but they seem to recover very well and even grow more dense after a very short time. Now I just need to be careful not to overwater.

    I have a begonia Rex, my first ever, and have not found it finicky or difficult to care for at all. I’ve moved it as well, which only caused it to produce a new leaf. Most moisture meters are not very accurate. It’s probably better to judge by inserting a bamboo skewer or using a finger to test.

The only information I found is "water regularly and they can use most kinds of soil". For real, I mean how vague can you get? @@GoodandPlanty ...cane begonia was the first and so easy I went on to other plants which I killed. Lol. Just cut the cane and stick it in leca with more water then other plants. Now I only put big root plants in leca......spider is easy and I’ve been successful with ZZ if I propagate in water first then just have a string go into the water base and not the bottom of the planter. So ZZ gets very little water. Snake plant was easy and so was dumb cane. Lucky bamboo and pothos. If a plant has thin roots, I leave it in soil. They always die on me within 10 months. They look good at first but never grow and finally die. Everything else is super easy. It’s best to take a cutting and propagate in water first to see how it does after it goes to leca and then move the entire plant if it looks happy. I just started my leca experience last year and I changed everything over in a week. Not smart. But I learned a lot quickly that way. As I threw out several plants. Lol.

    • @hollypuckett3931
      @hollypuckett3931 3 года назад

      Be sure that the leaf you’re choosing isn’t too old or tired but also not too young and immature. Wilting and yellowing is common and doesn’t always mean propagation is a failure, I generally wait until the piece is completely dried and crispy or melted before I give up as the leaf will yellow and wilt as it transfers its energy and nutrients to the roots. Propagation doesn’t always work, like Kat said and she’s right that it isn’t always your fault. I would take a few leaves at a time and try a few different methods, if you’re able. Heart shaped Leaves RUclips channel has a very good Begonia propagation video as does Summer Raine Oakes, maybe you’ll see something in these videos that you haven’t tried yet 🙂

If you have not already, I would love if you could talk about Liquidirt and feeding vs fertilizing. I would also love to know some plants that do not like feeding/fertilizing or have special requirements to keep in mind. I recently started using Liquidirt and some plants are really loving it. I think some, however, may not love it as much. I would like to understand better why this is! Thanks for great content!

    I’m in the market for a maculata. Big box stores around here have them occasionally, from Costa. But so far I’ve only seen cruddy looking plants. I’ll wait until I see a really healthy one & finally give a cane begonia a shot

    My begonia has parts of the leaves brown (crispy), especially appearing when I brought her in the apartment. I am not sure if this is a water problem or maybe fungus 😬

    • @GoodandPlanty
      @GoodandPlanty  3 года назад

      if there isn't moisture sitting on the leaves, it might be the water. begonias are a little sensitive to environment changes though, so it could also just be acclimating!

    • @StanGeorgiana

      There shouldn't have been moisture on the leaves, so I might rule that out. I can also testify to her being a drama queen. Thank you!

      Crisping on the tops and tips is generally an indication of inconsistent or poor watering and crisping around the edges is typically indicative of humidity concerns, in my experience

      They cannot be watered with tab water that has allot of chemicals. You need to get a water filter, or leave your tap water out for two to three days so some of the chemicals will dissipate.

    Cane Begonias are DEFINITELY more beginner friendly. I love the two that I have. The only real issue I have had is with a small pot of Brazilian Lady that I had to cut up due to shipping stress ( Duh! 🤦). I propagated them in water until the roots were about 2 inches and then moved them into soil. I guess the soil wasn't airy enough, because within the very first day, HALF the leaves were drooping or melting! I immediately took them back out of the soil and plopped them right back into water and that's where they still are😳 I'm too scared to try again🤦😂

    • @GoodandPlanty
      @GoodandPlanty  3 года назад

      That's fair! With begonias I tend to wait for the roots to get a little extra long since they are so sensitive.

      It’s very common for plants to experience a sort of shock when transitioning from water to soil. Seeing visible signs of stress does NOT mean that the plant isn’t and won’t acclimate, it’s just going to take a bit of time. The energy will be redirected to establishing the roots within the soil and so the foliage may look a bit droopy or wilty during this time. For the first week or two, be sure to maintain moist soil as this is the environment they came from (being in only water). When you can give the plant a gentle tug and you feel resistance and the foliage starts to perk back up, these are indications your plant’s roots are secure within the pot and then you can resume normal care for the plant 😆 I generally like to wait until roots form secondary roots in water propagation to be sure the plant will have the best chance to take off HOWEVER, begonias do very well with soil propagation as well, so as long as there is a healthy root system going in, it should take off well! Don’t be scared to try again! ❤️

      @@hollypuckett3931 thanks for the help!..and confidence, lol..I definitely need to go ahead and pot them up again. I know they're ready for a bit more nutrients than they're getting right now😬🤞 I actually might try rooting my begoias in soil next time though since they seem to be a bit more sensitive to the transition. Thanks again!🌿

      @@laurenervin1404 you’re welcome and I hope it helps!! I personally like to LIGHTLY fertilize plants that have roots in water, I use my normal fert but I dilute it to quarter or half strength and use it maybe once and then just use plain water to top off the water in the propagation vessel as I needs it 🙂👌🏻 I don’t like to use it for plants BEFORE they’ve rooted as I think it increases rot but after they have rooted, I do like to give them a little boost

    I have a maculata and a rex and they grow like weed but the rex KEEP GETTIN MILDEW. I had to cut almost every leaves cause they have brown spot where the mildew is. The maculata is fine so far at least.

    my escargot begonia Really prefers to get bottom-up watering, does anyone know why?

    • @hollypuckett3931
      @hollypuckett3931 3 года назад

      Probably because this is the most thorough way to water and the plant has the opportunity to take in as much water as it needs as the entire root mass is given access to water and the soil is saturated completely and for a longer period of time, whereas top down watering doesn’t offer the plant continuous moisture to draw up and absorb in the same way

    Rhizomatous and cane begonias. There's more rhizomatous begonias than the rex.
    Your spotted cane begonia is called begonia benigo.
