- Lightsabers are awesome, but not all of us have After Effects. Today we're making a similar (and maybe even better effect) in the free 3D software Blender in less than 5 minutes.

I'm a big Star Wars fan myself and I've always wondered how to do stuff like this. I am ALSO a Video Game Design major and college right now, and finding out you can do this stuff in a free program that I heavily work in is so awesome! Great and simple tutorial, taught me some cool tricks I can potentially use in the future!
WAIT, YOU'RE GOING TOO FAST.
GREAT video really explains alot of VFX to me
incredible work. 🙌🏻
and this is why I stick to stills photography. That was all double Dutch to me lol! But thank you for trying to teach an old dog a new trick!
Tip if you want it to look as good as in the video,
check the lighting it isnt as low but as powerful which gives the best effect, if the light in your scene is too powerfull then the saber will be difficult to see and will give the effect that the saber kindof dissapears, while if the light is too weak, the saber will just look artificial and png like,
this also aplie if you have an actual glowing lightsaber and what you are doing is masking the light out of them.
Guy brought a Lightsaber to a snowball fight, what a sore loser.
Prequels we’re good
yes, they just mostly didn't use practical lighting
Nice work! Very cool.
At 4:19, there isn't an option to turn on bloom, even if I search for it. I'm new to blender btw
Nice! I'm New to Blender, and this video helped a lot! a little fast for me though... 😃😃
Why is the bloom not showing in the video for me? Im very new to this.
okay so uh, ive encountered a problem, so i render it exactly as you say, and yes it does render, but not at the positions I rotoscoped it too, for example i did a video of a guy swinging a sword, i rotoscoped it, but when it renders its no longer on the sword, its tracking the same animation and the top of the screen. what do i do???
even got the old 1977 blue correct...
What do I do with the mask when the lightsaber goes in front of the body?
Thanks! Subscribed!
Actually it was fast and very good tutorial
But it's not good for rookies
They need a longer video
But it was very good tutorial 👍
Really solid! They way the brightness dims near the end of the blade on big swings is awesome!
Do you have any thoughts on adding a random flicker to the brightness of the blade and on the diameter of the blade mesh itself? I'd say that's the biggest thing missing from the effect at this point.
Really awesome result!
The tutorial is very useful, but how do I make the sound effects?
There's a sound library you can download from the Resource page at sabercomp.com -- That's where we got ours. Hope that helps, and good luck with your creations!
how do you add the unstable kyber crystal look to the lightsaber?
A way you could do this is probably displacement modifier and animated noise map. I haven't done blender in ages though, so just, give it a shot, but don't be too confident in it.
I'm very new to blender and when I try to render my project, the animation of the lightsabres doesn't appear, just my original footage. How do I render with the animation? Sorry for messaging again but I have to do this for tomorrow
Be interested to see a video applying this technique to A New Hope. Great movie, but the lightsabre effects are definitely dated.
how do you get the refrence video to play?
Awesome video! Is there any way to make the blade as thin if not thinner than the actual stand in blade? All my blades look fatter than they should lol
is anyone else having trouble with the image sequence being bigger than it should be?
For me, when im in viewport, my video takes up the whole camera as it's suppose to, but when I render it, my video is smaller than it should be, so my CG lightsaber doesn't match up with my real lightsaber. Can someone help me?
Great tutorial! At the final steps where the image sequence of the lightsaber and the footage are connected by a screen node, the lightsaber isnt fully integrated to the final video like in your tutorial. It becomes a bit transparent with the Factor of the screen node at its maximum. The image sequence of the lightsaber has been rendered just like yours.
Motion Blur no worky please help
So I’m using blender 3.4 and when I press ctrl alt 0 the camera doesn’t go to top, I’m kinda new to blender so I don’t really know what to do
ctrl alt 0 sets the camera to where you are in the scene. Before you set it try going to top view and then hitting ctrl alt 0 to bring it up. Hope this helps!
What flashlight is that?
Wuben L50
anybody know how to fix your footage if it dosent fit the frame? when i render it the blades are huge compared to the shot
This guy makes better lightsaber effects than Disney with the sequel trilogy
Thanks! Still waiting for a call from ILM…
Honestly, the sequels had the best lightsaber vfx
@@gingerboiii_tt well yea, because they are the newest. the VFX in the mandalorian and the book of boba are unmatched in any star wars. Can't wait for what they do in the Kenobi series.
?
I don’t see a mask checkbox user visibility in object properties, is their a way to fix that?
Same here
edit: it seems it's in the collection properties tab (above object properties) now. Restrictions>Holdout but you need to set a whole collection
what the best way to do this in 3.3?
I believe this method should still apply in 3.3.
mine looks nowhere near as good because bloom doesn’t exist anymore in blender 4.2 AHHHHHHHH
Oooh man, that profile image might need a bit of work lol.
What app are u using
bruh, its blender lmao
How did you make that point on the lightsaber blade?
select the top face, extrude, maybe 3-4 times, and with each extrusion, scale it down a bit until its smooth.
@@skylinex4719 Thanks
Hey, do u leave the Render on standard or filmic ?
render on filmic, because then the lightsaber glow looks better.
then, when you re render it after compositing, change it to standard. This way, the glow is already set, and your vidoe footage is not changing color.
this was a good tutorial, but, u went through the steps a bit to fast I think. My opinion though.
5 minute ? you meant 5 days ..
5min tutorial😔
0:49 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
oh shit it isnt easy
More like 5 minutes... of you explaining it
Impossible to follow and understand you.
bro he talks soo fast,
hard to keep up.
