“What if you need to cast on 200 stitches, first of all just don’t do it just move onto next project! “ 🤣 very comical! I love that trick with two separate ends so I never run out of yarn or have so much left over wasted yarn because I may have miscalculated.
This is such a good explanation. I love, love, love your close ups and the fact that you repeat the cast on so many times while explaining. This is the clearest and best explanation I’ve seen of this online. I’ve been knitting since I was like ten, and have only ever used the knit cast on because it’s the way I was taught. But this is SO. MUCH. FASTER. May the knitting gods bless you with skeins that never knot or tangle and are always evenly dyed according to dye lot. Because you deserve it that much.
I lol’d when you said “if a project asks you to cast on 200 stitches, run away. Don’t cast on that project” 🤣 It’s good to hear someone like you, a professional knitter and designer, feel that away about casting on a large number of stitches.
Very clear video - I was taught to do it with my thumb the second way and I was always confused if this method of casting on was the same as the long tail cast on. I’ve always called it the thumb method. Relieved I don’t need to learn a new way although with the help of this video I probably could!
Oh wow, 20 years of knitting and I'm learning the 2-ends trick NOW. Wow!! Thanks so much! Would love to see a video on continental knitting, too. It looks so quick and efficient!
Stephen-Your method of using both ends of a cake for the cast on is brilliant! I recently case on 310 stitches for a horizontal brioche scarf, and it took me three tries to get a long enough tail to get it all cast on. Thanks to you, that won’t happen again! 😁
@@patportran4683 Well, I’m a self taught knitter and crocheter. I didn’t have the luxury of someone teaching me in school. At 76, what I have learned has been from watching people like Stephen and others, who have been kind enough to share their knowledge.
In case it helps anybody else: Suzanne Bryan suggests that in order to keep the caston from being too tight you keep a little space between the stitches. The LT caston creates a series of loops (from the working yarn) pulled through loops (from the tail) where both are of equal size. If a larger needle is used the working yarn loops are larger and can appear sloppy. By spacing your stitches (I like to visualize them as if they were stretched like a hat would be) you are building in stretch while keeping both loops the same size. Also, once the loops are created and the space has been left you can tighten the yarn into position pretty firmly. Try it. It may or may not be the method for you but it's helped me! Happy knitting everyone
Yes, of course, the way to make the cast-on stretchy is to provide more space BETWEEN stitches, and NOT to use a large needle!! Where do people learn these things? Doesn't anyone ever go to school??
Thank you so much for these great tips. I cast on over 300 stitches for a shawl and kept running out of yarn no matter how I tried to figure it out. You’re a genius. ❤️
This was very easy to follow. New to me was how to never run out of yarn, which I have done so many times, wasting a lot of time, and having to start over. Thank you very much! Your mind works in a teacher-ish way!
this is my favorite long tail cast on tutorial. I always refer new knitters here. I also put a st marker every 25 stitches so counting to check progress toward that 200 sts is much less painful.
I've never been able to do this due to physical limitations with my left hand, but watching you I suddenly got the idea to try this with the opposite hand. I'm sure it will feel awkward at first, but I'll give it a try!
'grab the carrots' ...took me back to when I was helping my son learn cursive writing...I told him a story about the lower case k in a similar way, only it was a skier who'd lost his pole half way down and had to go back and get it and then had to go around another skier. I always use the long tail co, but over estimate by a lot when I do. I think I'll try the two end of yarn trick for my next co. Thank you!!!
Oooooooooo..... Easy!! German twisted cast on is my ultimate favorite!!!! But I actually cast on 10 stitches & measure from that to be safe. I think it uses a tad more yarn. I NEVER do a slip stitch...
You Can Certainly Tell I've Been Knitting Too Many Pullovers Recently... I Came Here For The Technique Video In Case You Did It Special (You Do) I Went Back To A Cardigan Pattern And Was Like "Okay, I Cast On -But It Doesn't Say To Join In The Round" 🤦🏽♀️

Oh god Stephen you need to do a knitting podcast, I feel like you'd be such a joy to listen to

The last method with 2 ends is so awesome 😎👍
MIND OFFICIALLY BLOWN! Thank you so much for the trick with the two ends. I'll die happy now (after knitting a million big shawls).
To Pheonix... where did you learn to knit? This is the basic method shown in EVERY knitting class! Get out from under your rock!

This is the best explanation I have listened to over the past forty years. Wow! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
My mum taught me this method 30 years ago - it’s the only way I know how to cast on. Super clear instructions - love it.
I can’t tell you how many times I have cast on multiple times. Use both ends!! Amazing. Thanks Stephen
Love your videos
1) You are so stinking cute 2) you make knitting fun and not as stressful- 3)great tip on not running out of yarn for CO We miss you in Denver
"Cute" is a matter of opinion, I guess. "in the eyes of the beholder..." it seems.

It was a life saver when casting on 600 stitches for a shawl recently! Thanks, Stephen!
That is a very old method. Where do people go to school these days? Why don't they know this?

I have always done this with the other hand ~ you’ll do fine!
Thank you so much! I hate it when I run out of yarn when casting on, but now, never again :)
This was amazing! I never put aside enough length for my long tail cast on. Now that will never again be a problem. Thank you
Thank you Mr. West, you are a wonderful teacher.
5:20 Whhaaattt....🤯🤯🤯 Mindblowing like always ❤❤❤
I always play long tail cast on yarn chicken 🐓 I lose more often than I'm willing to admit 😅🤣🤣

You don’t want to cast on 1000 sts? 🤓Not running out of yarn for massive cast ons is a game changer. Thank you!!!!

Is it possible that you show the cable part of the doodler? I don't know how to work it 🙈
Greetings, Alex 🦉
You just made my day better!
I love you so much!🤗
Of course, this is Continental style knitting. There IS a way to do the long-tail method in the English style. Try it as well.
Great video! Love the rabbit and carrots analogy. Easy to visualize.
Super helpful!!!!
