      The title of the movie is simply 'Batman'. It's the only movie with that exact title so we'll always know what you're talking about, especially since You're commenting on a video that is specifically about that specific Batman film. "Batman 89" is a comic book series.

    To me growing up I always saw Batman begins as "what if Batman just one day existed in this world" (coincidentally I live in Chicago) and 89 was "what the world would have to be like for Batman to exist"

      yeah it's primarily just a way to make sure to get as far away from batman forever and especially batman and robin a 'realistic' batman has increasingly oversaturated ever since the success of that film especially after the dark knight where dc just started putting an emphasis on making everysingle last one of there properties as dark as possible without really being dark

    Fun fact: Anton Furst was under contract with Columbia, and wanted to find a way to work on Batman Returns. And Burton just sort of unceremoniously cut this guy off, just stopped taking his calls, and this was where he was doing a lot of work for personal friends, and professional relationships. He was just cutting ties with people sort of inexplicably. And unfortunately, he had substance abuse problems. He was supposed to go into rehab and was going to check himself in. And then one night, he just decided… to jump off a roof instead. He committed suicide. It was a month and a half after realizing “Oh, so they don't want me for this next Batman movie.” He and Burton had never had a chance to reconcile. Burton just stopped speaking to him. Furst had no idea what happened, he spiraled into this depression and that's how it ended.
    (Obviously, I'm not saying he died because of what Burton did to him, Furst was a very troubled guy. I guess it's just because Burton is famously a guy who avoids conflict. Like he had the producer of Batman Returns fire his agents for him so that he can sign on with a different agency. Like he just doesn't want to have those conversations. I think Burton had probably already decided “I just made Edward Scissorhands, I want the designer to reimagine everything because I don't want to make the same movie again.” And rather than trying to let Anton Furst down, gently, it was just like “Or I could not talk to him at all and then eventually he'll figure it out.”)

    Batman89 is by far one of the best movies I've ever seen in my top 5 of all time. As a kid growing up, I was shorter than my older brother & my mother and I was often isolated but I saw this movie and was inspired to embrace the fact that I was alone. In my opinion, Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne made being alone cool. The truth was my mother had to work and she'd leave me with a baby sitter, whom I had yet to get to know. We'd moved away from family, after my mom had married a navy man and so until my mother and brother returned home I was alone with a neighbor/babysitter. She happened to have Batman89 on vhs 📼🔥😌🤷🏾💯all of a sudden the darkness didn't seem so bad or so lonely. I'd often lose myself in the world of Gotham watching Keaton's Brilliance. I was between the ages of 5 & 6 years old and the concept of death had not yet set in. But watching the movie I remember being both fascinated & afraid of Nicholson's Joker. I wasn't afraid of watching him so much as my ideas of the unpredictability of his character. If for example it was the middle of the night and I had to take a trip to the rest room or kitchen for water and the house was pitch black ideas of Nicholson's Joker 🃏 spooked me because if he could pop up on Vicki Vale than perhaps he could pop up on me a 5 year old little boy. This made rewatching the movie all the more interesting because subconsciously I felt the more I watched it the more I'd understand what This Joker's motives were. The Batmobile was alive in my humblest of opinions from the perspectives of a 5 year old child. It followed Batman's every command, as if it were a dog or a well trained pet of some sort. The good news about Burton's Batman is he was your worst nightmare's worst nightmare. If Keaton could moonlight as a regular guy & transform into something 100 times as tougher than so could I. I loved when bullies tried me because I'd play into their illusion of what I appeared to be until it was too late and I had then right where I wanted them 💯🤣. My favorite thing to do was to power kick them in the stomach as hard as I could as if I were Keaton himself in the Batsuit 🤣💯 that'll learn them I though😏. For a little guy I hardly had any enemies growing up 🤣 mostly everyone respected me after they saw my love for fighting. Hell, I enjoyed it, I'd imagine I was Keaton's Batman after falling out of the sky or being shot and I'd get right up and enjoy making them pay🤣🤣🤣

    I think the one bit of leeway is that Batman 89' was the first movie to explore Batman's story at all, (66, obviously not doing that because of tone) so the film frames Bruce's story not as an exploration but as a mystery uncovered by Viki. We aren't told upfront why this man dresses as a Bat and fights crime we spend a decent chunk of the film investigating Bruce as a mystery and discovering that he lost his parents to violent crime. The film dosen't dig beyond the surface because it was the first film to even crack the shell.
    Of course, Batman Begins does this more thoroughly but 89 was the FIRST to do it on the big screen - Begins got to see what 89 did, compartmentalize it and expand upon it like a second draft.

    14:56 Shame Zack Snyder didn't get that and so his Superman, rather than being the light hearted, inspiring hero he's supposed to be who tries to save as many people as he can, considers Earth his home due to being raised there and so on was instead miserable, selfish, didn't care about saving anyone except Lois and his mother Martha and killed innocent people in his fight with Zod in Man of Steel without a care. And Batman, who hates guns because of how his parents were killed was shooting every criminal he saw and branding others in BVS.

    I disagree with your view that '89 Batman lacked depth or the story was weak - this Batman is *screwed up*. He wants to live a normal life but just... can't, he is completely unable to function like a human being; his attempt at a fun, ditzy playboy persona is awkward and aloof, he seems bored and unfazed after having sex with Vicki Vale and he's more comfortable sleeping upside-down like a bat than in an actual bed. He is a bat that wants to be a man, and I think that's pretty deep as is.
    And about the storytelling; I felt the plot was fairly intricate and tight. Everything made sense, there's a lot of cause-and-effect. The "problem" is that a lot of it is visual; Burton really subscribes to show don't tell here - the audience learns that Grissom is setting up Jack via a look on his face, and a stolen CIA file on Joker's desk giving exposition on the origin of Joker gas is left as a "blink, you'll miss it" moment. And Batman's arc of starting out as a heroic figure and being pushed over-the-edge into a murderous madman by The Joker is never made clear until the ending of Returns and Robin's arc in Forever.

    One thing you keep repeating constantly in this video is “There is no story”. It would’ve been one thing if you said that the story is simple, but to say the former is to say that there is no narrative in this film that has a beginning, middle, and end. Is that what you’re saying?

    • @ProductionJournal
      @ProductionJournal  2 года назад +1

      I guess what I meant was it has a plot. Things happen. Point A gets to Point B, but it is a weak narrative at best. But you're right, I should've been more clear with that
