Watching this right now. About 7 min in. The summer of Batman ‘89 was something else. We’d never seen this before. Literally everyone had a bat logo tee shirt. The soundtrack. Went like a half dozen times in the theater. It fed into everyone rediscovering the books. It was a smaller Star Wars 77 moment (which even modern blockbusters don’t even get near)
Has anything come close since? When I was a kid Spiderman 2002 seemed pretty big- and Lucas went all out on Revenge of the Sith. There were gains blow up Darth Vader's on top of every Burger King lol
Yep absolutely. The lack of passion really bleeds through these days. It's hard to get excited for something that the creators weren't even excited to make.
I felt that was a good place to end it- sums up everything we like about it really- all the care and attention to detail in the production design- tangibility of everything.
I grew up watching reruns of the campy Batman show so when the 89 movie came out, I was hooked and amazed. I was about 7 at that time. Remember having the movie poster on my wall.
I remember what a phenomenon this movie was when it first came out. I had all of the older "Batman & Robin" action figures before this one even hit, and you can be sure that I collected all of the toys from THIS era of the franchise as well (even the batwing)!! lol... I love looking back on this movie with a sense of nostalgia. It's DEFINITELY the official Batman of the "Gen-Xer"!! 🤣👍
Did you hear the story Keaton told about working out for the movie? He decided to get in better shape and started working out at the studio. One day Nicholson was walking by, he stopped looked at Keaton and said "What are you doing?". Keaton said "Working out". Nicholson replied "Why?" And Keaton said "I don't know". Nicholson just looked and walked off then Keaton stopped 🤣
I loved this "Batman" when it came out, except for a couple things. 1. The obvious animated pieces; one when batman walks back inside the tall building in the beginning, his shadow is REALLY poorly animated, and of course the OBVIOUS "Joker falling to his death" section. I understand this was way before CGI and they probably couldn't get Nicholson to "Die Hard" a fall away from camera, but something else needed to be done there. 2. When Bruce sleeps with Vicky Vale, gets up and hangs upside down on the gravity bar, swinging forward and back as he "sleeps"... that was clumsy. There were a couple continuity errors as well, but this is an awesome movie, and DetectiveWolfman makes an very valid point about Batman's aversion to killing.
I so wish more modern audiences/comic fans, were aware of THE SHADOW comics & classy 199...4 film with gravel voiced Alec Baldwin a character that PRE DATES The Bat Man
There are the...red white & blue heroes-SUPER MAN, SPIDERMAN.CAPT. AMERICA The daylight heroes, the nocturnal ones- DARE DEVIL, BAT MAN, GHOST RIDER, PUNISHER, & the more jokey one's - Team one's such as - X MEN. FANTASTIC 4 etc my point being there are different Heroes for different fans. one of my favourites is the SILVER SURFER he is a profound anti hero forced to live in a world that does not want him, & without his Woman (because of his silver skin & Alien look) & yet he is desperately needed, a similar thing to the BLACK PANTHER
THANK YOU for putting the nearly religious doctrine of "Batman does not kill" on blast. The way fans pray at that alter is damn near cultish. You point out that Batman, in his very first appearances as a character, killed and even carried a gun, and fans bleet about how "it's not canon" anymore...as if they can decide what and what isn't valid for adaptation. It's absurd. Comic fans are often the worst at actually discussing comic book films because they're hung up on the panels. They cannot assess a different medium.
There is always this contradiction on the villians perception of him, (including in the comics) is he a Spectre a non human entity, or is he literally a vampire Bat? of course when you see the car, THAT tells you he MUST be human, & so in some ways he's better without the car, just using the flying cape & grappling hook, instead to get about. I read a critisism of THE SHADOW film saying there arent enough action scenes in it, BUT like the Shark in JAWS if you saw him too often you lose the mystery & sense of fear, this kind of Hero SHOULDNT be seen too much especially as he is a night Avenger/Vigilanti, the same can be said of BAT MAN, also THE SHADOW film is meant as old Hollywood, like the old detective films from the 40s Too much bombast, A mistake they keep making with today's "Super hero" films
I'll never forget- Summer 1989 was BATMAN summer. Batman and Joker t-shirts were everywhere! When I went to see the movie by myself (saw with a packed theatre- mostly families). When the movie was over..... I felt like something was missing OR cut out. I just was NOT thrilled by it. Also , I wasn't a little kid. I was probably 25. I'm SURE I was alone on this. If any of you were 5 to 15 years old - I;m sure you thought it was perfectly awesome. One of the strange things was 'Why did that reporter guy (Robert Whul ? ) have SUCH a big part in the movie?" . He was pretty annoying. That was just one thing. Neither Batman OR Bruce Wayne had much of a personality. That was another thought. It really was "The Joker Movie". Lastly , the END scene - with the gag "laughing bag" -- I was wondering "How many kids remember The Laughing Bag?" . It was a cheap "novelty store item" - a battery operated "bag" that laughed when you pressed the button. It was from the 1970s . Never saw one in the 1980s though. It may have been called "Bag O' Laughs" as well.
the concept of "BAT MAN" works for me whatever the production design/background may look like, because its about both Bruce Wayne and Bat man first & above all, this is a character where an...industrial grey 40s landscape works, BUT also a much more modern real world one does to, he works in both environments.

Remember when Michael Keaton was announced everyone was confused. People were like Mr. Mom is going to be Batman. Lol it was a stroke of genius
I am so glad I found your channel. I love your take on so many of these films
That’s a huge compliment and I love to hear that. Hopefully you find more that you enjoy!
That hammering on joylessness near the end made so much sense.
Yep absolutely. The lack of passion really bleeds through these days. It's hard to get excited for something that the creators weren't even excited to make.
I felt that was a good place to end it- sums up everything we like about it really- all the care and attention to detail in the production design- tangibility of everything.
and that looks exactly the same as everything else.
Great chat with the legendary Det Wolfman
Lowres- big fan. Thanks for watching!
“Tough shit don’t be a criminal.”
Pearl of wisdom. Love it.
Haha yes!

its interesting that when Bats enters the frame and/ or the scene ,hes usually descending or ascending
For those people who weren't around in 89 this movie was the biggest thing that summer. That Bat logo was eveywhere
Excellent. Love this movie. Spring and summer '89 were totally ruled by Batman and it was glorious. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Really nice video guys!
Thank you Shamrock balls- very cool
These videos are superb.

Yeah, the sleeping upside down this is a little much.
Great film and I agree with your comparison with this and modern superhero films.
Production design sure was good in Batman 1989 💪🏻
Immaculate!
The movie's construction is haphazard but I argue it was a satire of urban living. Gotham City was the villain of the picture.
I made an audio play based on the unused sequel script Batman 2 Audio Play: ruclips.net/p/PLj0OTmpKd7tUhpu_gJe3YSnlv0ddqteKH
Keaton was great in the role and is my nr 2 best Batman.

I liked Batman being able to kill. Especially in Batman v Superman.
Haha- you bet man. I don't see any issue with Batman as a swashbuckling hero like Zorro or Indiana Jones knocking off some henchmen

You look handsome in this vid...
As opposed to ugly in all the other ones!

Nolan ruined Batman, Gotham the show made Batman fun again
Never saw the Gotham show maybe I will check it out
I have just made an audio play based on the unused script for the sequel to this.

This is really cool- I will be giving it a listen!
@@FilmJournal Thank You 👍
The Dark Knight is a terrible terrible terrible movie.
