Heath did a great job no doubt but when we look at who the joker was in the comics- his version is actually one of the furthest from it. Jack had it down to a T. People like to say “Jacks version was goofy, he was dancing and listening to Prince” HELLO HE IS THE JOKER! His whole thing is about being goofy. An unhinged criminal that will do bad things but he will make light hearted of that bad situation because everything is a joke to him. People also say “I don’t see the joker falling in love with a reporter” personally I actually don’t think he ever truly fell in love with Vicky. I think it was sort of just a way to draw Batman closer so Joker could try to take him out. I mean in the original Script Joker Kills Vicky at the top of the church. Doesn’t sound like he was genuinely in love to me 🤷🏻♂️
Before The Dark Knight came out, there were rumors the movie would show Jokers origin during the opening credits. I’m kind of glad they didn’t go with that.
"Winged freak terrorizes??" "Wait til they get a load of me" best line in the 89 Batman movie. To me Jack Nicholson is the best Joker ever. Michael Keaton is the best Batman ever. Perfect match.
The Red Triangle Circus gang can't survive living at the abandoned zoo with crocodiles eager to eat meat. Besides, Catwoman has nine lines, so it's already crazy Tim Burton land - Just go with it!
I remember being so angry when people were praising Heath in 08 lol they were saying that he was so much better than Jack Nicholson. I didn't think so and still don't think that Heath is better but I can truly say that Heath did a wonderful job
He was a good random psycho, not a good Joker. Also, so many times he should have been murdered by the mob, seriously, no way he even gets in that building with all the mobsters irl if he has a hit on him. Grenade coat or not. I'm not the biggest fan of TDK, only movie I've ever fallen asleep to while sober.
Completely agree. This is my favorite Batman movie overall. I think Bruce Greenwood is second only to the late great KC. I also love John DiMaggio as the Joke so menacingly and actually funny.
Can you fucking imagine. Christopher Walken as 2/Face?? Just the cicillian scene in "True Romance" alone was chilling and cold. In this (Burton universe), Christopher Walken would have killed that roll.
Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie only because when I was a kid everyone loved Joker and I was a Penguin fan from the comics. I didn't care that Devito is barely Oswald. The Penguin was in a movie and he bit a man's nose off. Which was a feather in my cap as a Penguin fan while defending him against Joker Stan's on the playground all those decades ago.
Youre wrong on this one Vee. He saw Vickie as an accessory to be taken. Sure it's of a different time where men threw themselves at women to prove their love but this is obsession with a person he's never even met. Joker tricks her into thinking she was meeting Burce, then kills a museum full of people to get some one on one time with her. Also, keep in mind, this is Jokers first introduction to Batman. They had yet to build that relationship.
@@Hi_Just_Fred I heard what Vee said. Isn't the crux of all of his schemes to have that same level of obsession? Take the laughing fish as an example. He was equally obsessed with putting his face on a bunch of fish as he was at taking possession of Vickie in the movie.
I can't stand comic book stuff and Batman especially but I love your videos. That's a testament to how good your work is. You make things I find boring sound fascinating.
Batman Return received backlash upon its release. McDonald's pulled its promotion upon discovering the dark nature of the film. And many Karens and their children charged that it was even worse than Terminator 2: Judgment Day... Yeah, right. And with all those reasons, Tim Burton stepped down as director and was replaced by Joel Schumacher with the future movies, and the rest is history.
I've never had much of an issue with the mob thing with the Joker. I always viewed it as Joker Pre-Joker being someone who took any name and any role he could to gain power and hurt people.
People hated Heath Ledgers as Joker not because he isn’t Jack Nicholson. It is because he was known for the Knights Tale and Brokeback Mountain p. They didn’t think that actor could play Joker as well as Jack did. If Willem Dafoe got it they would have been loved that idea. Of course they were wrong. Heath was awesome as Joker.
The issue is that there are two Jokers in the comics. This is closer to the original version, and Heath Ledger is closer to the newer version. I personally prefer the older one. He's more socially adept and definitely not into chaos for chaos sake. Everything would be meticulously planned, hence his name. A joker is someone who plans gags and pranks. The problem being that what he finds funny is sadism. He is the class clown. This Joker is also one of the few that could realistically have henchmen. Just think of how much fun he could be to work with assuming he didn't murder you. He gets you in on his charisma, and keeps you near with sheer terror. Heath Ledger on the other hand is the Frank Miller Joker. Darker, less funny. He doesn't smile as much, doesn't actually make jokes. I don't see how he even gets henchmen other than maybe the delusional guy in the jail scene. I don't see him as capable of tricking people or planning things. They try claiming he could, but I have trouble believing the scenarios as they never show him having enough stability to pull the stuff off. That always bugged me about the Dark Knight, that the Joker had grandiose plans, but his main defining character trait was chaos. I just can't picture him getting into a hospital to set up bombs without getting shot by the police. I can't picture him planting bombs anywhere without getting shot by police. He is too unhinged in my opinion to be the Joker. Heath is entertaining, yes, but not realistic. Jack Nicholson, on the other hand, played the Joker as conniving, charismatic, highly intelligent, highly educated, and a great liar. I totally feel like he has the ability to pull off everyone he did. He knew psychology, and was very cynical. He knew how to hold back when necessary because he had plans. He also, most importantly, had access to resources and infrastructure to enact his plans. I believe a highly educated genius controlling the mob could poison beauty supplies, hack television signals, break into a museum, buy parade balloons, get a float made, buy poison gas, gas masks, etc. That's why Jack will always be the most realistic Joker as far as I'm concerned. I do agree with your penguin point, even if I enjoyed Devito's penguin. I prefer the version in Batman the Animated series. Devito is definitely not the Penguin, he's just a delight to watch because he's Danny Devito playing a Danny Devito character. He's wildly unrealistic, but fun.
Sorry Vee, but Batman didn’t kill the Joker. What he did was wrap a cable around the Joker and a Gargoyle to stop him from escaping, but it was the Joker that killed the Joker. He clearly sees what happened and doesn’t stop trying to escape via the helicopter causing the Gargoyle to break and pull him to his death. So while Batman is at best an accomplice to this death, it’s the Joker and his inability to accept a defeat that kills him.
The way Michelle fit that costume is why she's the most popular. She was also good in the role, but who would ever believe Michelle Pfeiffer was plain even with glasses?
Hot take, and I mean no disrespect to the man’s legacy. But I honestly preferred Jack Nicholson’s Joker over Heath Ledger, not saying he’s bad by any means. But I just think Nicholson is the perfect portrayal of the character, especially because he was in the DC actually remembered to make a Joker funny unlike nowadays where everyone is just trying to use him for try hard shock value. Looking at you, Batman who tries too hard.
I really love Christopher Walken as Maximillion Schreck Walken is always a delight in any movie/context (My first name is also Maximillion, that also might have something to do with it too🤷🏻♂️)
DeVito as the penguin is most remembered for how deformed and special he looks. Just like the Joker from Batman 1989 and TDK is also more popular than the Joker from Suicide Squad.
What works so well for me about a grotesque penguin IS his upper class ambitions. He reflects the ugliness of Gothams wealthy PHYSICALLY but also can manipulate them politically too I just think a touch more attention should have been given to how he enjoyed the surface world. We get glimpses of it but just not enough. He struggles with Oswald & Penguin similar to the struggle of Bruce with Batman
Jack Nickolson definitely worked as The Joker. That's why he's my 3rd favorite version of the character. Heath Ledger and Cameron Monaghan are my top 2. All 3 reasons were definitely The Joker.
You know what? I honestly forget that 89/Returns, Forever and Batman & Robin were all the same universe lol. Not in a nerd rage kinda way, I just saw the Kilmer and Clooney films as a completely different entity.
Very overrated and boring. Also, you can replace Batman with a random military type dude and have the same damn movies. They lost the personality after Begins going for "realism".
This video reminded me why I unsubscribed to this channel. I bet once Vee finishes making all his videos about TDK trilogy's villains, he'll cut them all into an hour long video to milk views about a week after he posts the final one. It wouldn't bother me as much if he put it in the title or description that it's a compilation.
...You're literally judging Nicholson's Joker based on media that came out afterward. You kidding me here? His Joker is based on the early versions that were just an asshole criminal who thought annoying Batman was funny. Yeah, how dare he not portray the character the way it was written 15 Gods-forsaken years AFTER he played the role. What an utter joke of a video.
Tim Burton's Joker and Penguin essentially traded henchmen. The Joker had gangsters, and the Penguin had circus freaks.
R.I.P benny (comichistorian) i know so many people got into comics because of you. 🙏
Nooo! Are you serious???
@@Iam123-i5j unfortunately yes 😔
Wtf?!
What the fuck, no 😢
@@Iam123-i5j I found out last night😭😭😭
Tim and Nicholson coming together to do the joker was a match made in heaven!
Batman 1989 is an instant classic without that film we wouldn't have Batman: The Animated Series.
We wouldn’t have the MCU, or anything honestly. Superman 78 and Batman 89 set the stage for comic book films being taken seriously
In my book, Jack's Joker is yet to be beaten. Sorry, Heath.
Heath did a great job no doubt but when we look at who the joker was in the comics- his version is actually one of the furthest from it. Jack had it down to a T. Heath Ledger put a lot of effort into playing the Joker.
Jack Nicholson just had to show up.
I get that similar feel from the kid who played him in Gotham. That it just came naturally to him
Before The Dark Knight came out, there were rumors the movie would show Jokers origin during the opening credits. I’m kind of glad they didn’t go with that.
His line: "You must be insane." That was ironic. I love it.
Exactly!
"Winged freak terrorizes??" "Wait til they get a load of me" best line in the 89 Batman movie. To me Jack Nicholson is the best Joker ever. Michael Keaton is the best Batman ever. Perfect match.
I think Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick-Ass, would be inclined to agree with you.
Let's get nuts.
The Penguin's origin and story would've be better suited for Killer Croc.
The Red Triangle Circus gang can't survive living at the abandoned zoo with crocodiles eager to eat meat. Besides, Catwoman has nine lines, so it's already crazy Tim Burton land - Just go with it!
