I think you've developed a specialty in finding affordable SSD drives.
Thanks, funny but true.
@@craigneidel I just purchased that SP 2TB NVMe and a simple Orico enclosure, and I'm using it as external storage for my Studio Max. Affordable and fast enough for my needs. Thanks Craig.
@@bryans8656 thanks. Hope it works good for you. It's cheap and a great way to add storage quickly.
Earlier this year I snagged a one terabyte M.2 SSD NVMe for $36. The Orico enclosure wasn't cheap at the time like $23. But the result is a small fast portable drive that I take when traveling. Holds my library of shows and movies with room to spare.
That is a good deal and good luck with everything.
That's literally insane
Great video - You give the best SSD advice on this channel. Saves us from doing the research and it's much appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.
Just bought the SN850X 2TB for $130. Easy Install, Blazing Fast! 👍
Those are nice drives for sure.
Ordered same drive for 126€ (119€ in Germany). Are you using cooler for it?
Could you please mention the TBW and the DRAM + NAND type specifications. Because drives with DRAM and TLC would have more TBW and would last longer. The QLC ones and without DRAM would probably fail soon and the customers are just going to end up losing data.
Not true as the qlc drives are also very good now. True story... I got ac2017 27 inch iMac in 2018. I also got Samsung qlc 1tb external drive. I used it as my boot drive on that Mac for last 5 years. Created 525 RUclips videos on it mostly 4k and ran entire computer of it. So massive tbw. No issues and never even had a slight issue. Tbw are so high now and most drives blow past the by 2 or 3 times. I made a few videos on tbw so I'm familiar but in real world anybody would be fine with qlc.
@@craigneidel Thanks for your great video's, just found out about your channel and have 2 'somewhat follow up questions on QLC'.
I have a very specific use case coming up soon, a NVME External drive for Games-only, now my questions are:
1. did you ever test if the heat of these ssd's goes down in an external enclosure (where the speed is reduced obviously (so no Thunderbolt but rather usb3-ish? ( I am worried about the heat long term! )
2. again heat-wise, do you know if there is a significant heat difference in TLC and QLC drives in an External enclosure?
I always have specific questions come up with any hardware and nobody else seems to care/bother. Thank you in advance!
Heat on the NVMe is really dependent on the individual drives from my experience and how you cool them. Some drives will run hotter and some cooler without great setups. But adding thermal pads and other elements that correctly touch the metal cases to control heat can help keep them cooler for sure. So it's hard to answer directly and I think that is why people stay away from those tests. Since if you test one setup it won't be true for all drives and enclosures just that specific case. Thanks again and I hope that helps.
1 year later and we miss those strange times were prices were that low
Yes it was only for a short time.
If you have the m.2 slots to use, or set yourself up with an multi m.2 on an unused PCI-E slot, there really is no reason not to run m.2 drives. I just picked up a SK Hynix P41 Platinum 2 TB for $141... Canadian dollars, so less than $110 USD on the Amazon Prime sale... prices really have come down on these for sure.
Yes for sure. SATA m.2 on external enclosures sometimes if you can get a deal and if enclosure doesn't cool well but if on your computer then m.2 nvme for sure.
Extensive evaluation. Great work.
Thanks Eduardo appreciate it.
Awesome video. Wish I saw it last year when the prices were so low.
Yeah, they have gone up quite a bit lately. Thanks.
last october (22) I bought a crucial 1TB m.2 gen 3 for like $130. last month I got the same drive for my buddy for $79. yesterday I bought a 2tb gen 4 crucial drive for 129 and that same 1tb gen 3 was $69. ssd prices are awesome! (but somehow I keep spending like 300+ on ram kits)
Yes, they are coming down for sure. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for doing the research. Some great deals out there.
Thanks. Yes very cheap drive right now.
One thing you also need to look at is TeraBytes Written, Some of these are pretty low.
I have a number of videos on terabyte written in what that means and I always consider that but for the cost you have to look at the trade-offs. Thanks for watching
Great video
Thank you
Canadians: Canada Day sales are weekend, July 1st. The same goes for the USA - July 4th sales will be crazy online.
They should be even better. Thanks.
I'm not sure how prevalent the issue is, but I can attest that the Crucial P3 and P5 drives do not work on ASUS Threadripper motherboards. Installing them prevents the board from booting. Had an absolute nightmare of a time for three months before Crucial owned it and refunded me. Crucial/Micron support was terrible. Just terrible.
Thanks for the feedback. I tend to be more of a Mac Channel and with Macs they work great but it's nice to hear all the data in case somebody is looking to install one. I do use Windows PC for my gaming setup but I have an Alienware system with a 1070 from a few years back. Still plays top games without issues.
Did you:
1. ensure you have the latest motherboard bios?
2. ensure you have the latest ssd firmware?
3. ensure their is no pcie lane conflict as a result of too many drives with different connectors (m.2 vs sata)?
4. run you ram at default clocks at first boot?
5. pat your case and tell your computer that you love it?
@@angrysocialjusticewarrior I appreciate where your heart is, but everyone at Crucial and ASUS confirmed it was incompatible after 6 months of pushbacks and duplicate testing. So...
1. yes
2. Can't update firmware on hardware on a platform where said hardware prevents booting in the first place.
3. yes
4. yes
5. it wasn't able to receive my wonton gestures of fidelity unless the Crucial RAM was in no way connected to it.
Current PCIe Gen 3 external enclosures (including all Thunderbolt 3/4 rated products on Amazon) will about halve the rated speed of the fastest M.2 drives shown here. No doubt, the price per TB is getting much more attractive recently. I have an Acasis TBU405 with Samsung 990 Pro and the R/W is just a bit faster than 3100 MB/sec. In less than 2 seconds I can transfer the entire contents of a 4GB DVD iso from my M2 MacBook Pro to the external drive. Not bad!!!
Yep I have video on that enclosure. It's fast enough for 95 percent of users. Thanks for watching.
Except that the Samsun 990 Pro has major failure issues, see online, controller and firmware issue kills the chip.
@@emreon3160 I looked into that as an issue. The first firmware released with the 990 Pro was severely flawed. Since then there have been a couple updates. I upgraded to the latest version several weeks back before using the drive for anything. I use it on a MacBook though and Samsung software doesn’t have a version compatible with MacOS. I’ll have to check it out on a Windows computer in the near future to see if it is holding up or not. Have you seen current reports of it failing with latest firmware (currently starts with a 3, came from Amazon with firmware that started with a 2).
@@rcbrush99 Hi there, not sure if its an issue, Samsung is compatible i believe. Yes i have seen that about the firmware. Probably better to stay away from Samsung for now, and use the WD NVMe's.
Did you actually test these ssd drives to see if the labelled capacity is true? I bought micro ssd cards cheap only to find out that they have software in them to trick devices into thinking they have more storage than what they actually can handle and lost lots of data bcoz of it. Since i got a reputable card ive had no issues and its almost full. So, very skeptical now buying any electronics off amazon just bcoz its cheaper.
Yes, on these drives I have not had any issues but have not tested 100% of them. But for the channel I have purchased most of these and they are all fine. Yes, some really off brands could have an issue but most of these are main brands they normally are good. Yes, if you fill them up they can slow down but that will change from drive to drive etc.
"ssd drives" = solid state drive drives
Ok yes it does
Lares is a faulty SSD! I bought one, on your recommendation and it was faulty and could not even be formatted! Had to return. I am finished with buying "no name" drives! Pay a bit more and save yourself a headache!
Ok, I like to hear all feedback. I bought a Samsung drive once that was faulty also so it's hard to determine that on just one drive. I have 5 and they are all working great but in the end get what is right for you.
Right.. but are thies drives going to fail in a year and destroy all my data? My purpose of wanting soild state memory is to insure my data will always be accessible. Old spinning disc hard drives are bound to fail.
Always have 2 copies of data in two location for sure. Then you won't lose anything but overall these should all last for a very long time. They are all high reviewed drives.
Availability of Dram cache wasnt mentioned for each drive
Yes, but Dram cache is becoming less important on these newer faster drives. I have used a bunch without that and have not had issues but understand it can be important for some reasons. In the next video I can mention that.
What we need with all this metal are high speed enclosures, and I don't mean the UsB-c 3xxxx values. I mean real USB-4 and real Thunderbolt 4 speeds. What good is a drive if you can stick it in a race car? I did a quick search and boy.... yeah drives are cheap these days, the enclosure market... not so much. Anything over 3000 speeds would be acceptable.
You know it! Storage price drop but lagging enclosure prices that are overly expensive for PCIe Gen 3 hardware.
Reminds me of the very distinct hardware-software cycle for Windows machines and applications back in the late 90’s and most of the 00’s.
I have a few videos on Thunderbolt 3 and 4 enclosures and for sure they are much faster. Most don't need 3000 MB/s in an enclosure though and the majority of people are fine with 800 MB/s and even then don't push them.
Yes Thunderbolt 4 enclosures (like Acasis) is still high. Should hopefully come down soon.
on that Team Group 4TB, there is an option for "Agile" or "Movement". What does that mean and which is better/faster?
I'm not sure what that option is and have not seen that before. I'll let you know if I find out.
Movement is a Generation 3 SSD.
Agile is a Generation 4 SSD.
Agile is faster and more expensive.
I was looking at both too just recently.
But I went the 4TB Silicon Power UD90 for now.
It’s a Generation 4 SSD.
We are getting ripped of in Australia. Everyone drive you showed is a lot more on AMazon Australia even after conversion.
Example was the Crucial P3 Plus 1TB for USD 37.66 = Aud 55.26. However it is listed on Amazon Australia for AUD 87.61. What is going on ?
However if I am prepared to wait I can buy from Amazon USA and get it delivered for Aud $59. That is $18 less and makes no sense to me.
Yes I'm not sure either but the pricing in Australia seems to be very high and I noticed that also. Thanks for the info to confirm.
thank you so much
Thanks
Prime Day was this week and I ordered the parts for a new computer. My boot SSD will be the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB, my data drive will be the MSI Spatium 4TB. Good prices on both.
Yes, there are good pricing on both of those things for sure. Thanks for watching.
So my only question is regarding Adata, I have seen quite a few pc repair shorts of various Adata ssd's randomly failing, is this why these particular ones are so cheap or is this being made into a bigger issue and it's nothing to worry about?
All drives are going to have a certain failure rate. Even drives like Adata are very low. Yes, Samsung will have a lower rate but maybe 1 less per thousand etc. so it's not as much as an issue as people make it out to be. I have used all the cheap drives and have yet to have any issues. When you read reviews the people who did are vocal and will post so you need to see how many reviews total. I would say adata are fine but again, get what you think is best for you and these are just one option.
02:56 That's a QLC drive.
Ok, thanks.
I'm replacing my orico thunderbolt enclosure with a 2tb 980pro with a 4tb option. I'm considering the WD BLACK SN850X 4TB nvme inside maybe an acasis thunderbolt enclosure or orico option. Do you have any recommendations. This is my for my photo archive, and I just want fast access using an my M1 macbook pro.
Thanks. I really only tested the WD sn770 and those work great and heat is controlled. If the 850x is on the list then it should work fine. Good luck and thanks for watching.
6 months later, and prices have gone up. Especially the Gen 4.
Yes, I may need to do an update video soon. They are rising in 2024.
Should I get those M.2 SSD Drives with or without heatsinks?
Depends where your putting them and if it fits
@@craigneidel I'll be on my PC(omen 25L). It should fit, but what do you recommend?
I'm not sure with that computer since I don't have one so not sure if it would fit or not. They should have info on the manufacturer's site though.
Is SSD last as long as HDD for storing of data ? I am thinking of adding an additional hard drive on my notebook for storing data. Thanks.
Spinning HDD may last a bit longer in but the SSDs are way better then they used to be and I would not worry. It matters I guess how long you are talking for the storage.
@@craigneidel Thank you for your reply. I am talking about 6 years of storage. I have HDD use for data storage that is 8 years and still functioning well. Usually before the HDD fails there is sound when the HDD is spinning which I will get an advance warning which I don't think I can get from SDD.
Yes, you won't get that warning. I think most of the modern day SSD are good for at least 10 years but I would check with the manufacturer on that. SSDs like to be powered on from time to time also.
@@craigneidel Thank you for your reply.
Welcome
Hi, can these be put into enclosures to make them external drives?
@@stevo987 for sure
@craigneidel thank you. I'm new to this. I'm looking for ssd's for just photos and videos for my son as I'm in bad health and want memory's stored. How do I know what enclosure is needed? So many different types. I'm not looking anything fast. Just 500gb would do. What would you recommend for a cheap external ssd 500gb? Prices here in the UK are almost double. I appreciate your feedback greatly 🙏
I would just get something like a Samsung T7 or similar and not worry about building one out. Those are easier for sure.
Yes…..the WD Blacks are awesome.
I like them and I have never had an issue with them yet.
Problem is only the 1tb variants go on sale(currently). I need 4tb minimum.
Few months ago they had good sales on 4tb. I did video
whats the reason of the price to drop at the time and now to be normal again?
It fluctuates for sure due to cost of silicon and other materials. I don't see it going down for a bit, maybe next year.
Governments around the world are paying companies to building fabs. As all those fabs are coming online in the next couple of years, computer chips will get a lot cheaper.
Yes, but will anybody have any money by then? Just kidding but the economy and inflation seems to be at odds with cheaper pricing.
If the SSD card is for a new Mac studio M2, what kind of an enclosure am I looking for? Thanks
SSD Card? I'm not sure what you are asking. But look for a 10 Gbps external enclosure or a more expensive Thunderbolt 3 or 4 enclosure for faster speeds. I have some other videos on building out enclosures also.
@@craigneidel thank you. I will look for those videos. I don't understand a lot about the hardware, but I'm trying to learn before I buy a Mac Studio. Thank you for your help and your quick answer. You do a great job.
@@snoopaka Thanks for watching and good luck with everything. Enjoy the Mac for sure.
Craig Neidel..Thanks Much !.......,
Thanks.
Does Drive speeds even matter on PS5? Or are they limited to 6500 anyway?
I don't use a PS5 but if anybody knows please post here. Thanks for watching.
now WD_BLACK 1 To SN770 M.2 2280 78 $
is some kind of festival time when u make video?
I just made an updated video. Yes, this video was from last year when the SSD pricing was much lower.
Just received my 2TB 970 evo plus for around $117 from Amazon Dubai
Nice deal and good luck with everything.
How did they became so expensive again??
Yes, in 2024 the prices went up again. I'll need to do a follow up soon and search for some ssd deals.
Only thing i would say is 512gb drives are kind of pointless, unless you just want a boot drive.
It depends on what you are doing. I would say for 90% of people they are actually fine. For people like our parents or anybody who isn't doing video editing or extreme work. For most people they just boot up the computer, check a few emails, browse the web, etc. and 512 GB is not bad for those types of people. Thanks again for watching the channel.
Whoa………some of those are Sata Nvme’s and they are SSD speed (500 mb/sec). Also, those ones with QLC are not very good. I don’t buy Samsung (ie; 2tb 980 Pro) because they don’t stand behind their warranty and these drives had bad firmware initially. I got caught with that and the drive went into read only mode before I could update the firmware. Samsung wouldn’t replace it because I no longer had the invoice, but gave them the model and serial number + pictures of the drive. I’ll send it back and you send a new one to me…….but…..nope……sorry. The worst part of this fiasco is that Samsung is fully aware that early versions of these drives had bad firmware. Should be a no-brainer to replace these drives no questions asked. They had the SN…….so they know it was genuine. Double middle finger salute to Samsung. Haven’t used one of their drives in my builds since then. Switched to WD Blacks. Your continued loss Samsung………..just one loss for me.
Yes, but I use the SATA in some cases where I just need basic storage. They work great, are fast enough, and don't get nearly as hot as the faster NVMe drives. So for basic storage I actually like to use SATA M.2s in some cases.
Hi I have gigabyte a320m-s2h PCIe Gen3 x4 110mm M.2 (Up to 32 Gb/s)
Can I still use the gen 4 ssd?
I would check with manufacturer. I think you have gen 3 board. It might work but most likely get reduced speeds. I am more of Mac channel so not sure about that specific board but if the board can't take gen4 it won't get same speed even if SSD is backwards compatible.
Almost all Gen 4 drives are backwards compatible with 3rd gen slots, but speeds are reduced.
@@davegordon2163 Yes, most but not all in my findings. But normally for sure.
@@craigneidel - Basically, I've found that many of the Amazon sellers will specify if the drives are known backwards compatible from 4th to 3rd Gen. If they don't mention it, simply buy from a different seller.
Yes, they should list it in the Amazon listing for sure.
Bro can i slot the Rougueware NX200M M.2 GEN3 1TBin my PS5??
I would search the comments and the questions on Amazon to be 100% sure. Thanks for watching.
Interesting but. . . . You are advertising PC parts on a MAC big screen? ?
If you watch my channel I build a ton of external storage for Mac's. So no these are not pc products. I use them on Mac's all the time including booting macos off them.
Thanks for your video, now I wonder if I should go with the 990Pro instead of the SN850x !!? My PC came with a SK Hynik in it for boot (pretty much the reason why I'm looking at your video!) And I bought a WD Black SN850x 4TB for my second NVME slot. The SK Hynik is so instable compared to the WD Black, can't handle big files, speed drops near 100mbs after 2 seconds writing. The WD Black keeps a great speed all the way through, no big drop in speed, even with big files. I'd say it takes 2-2.5 min to my system to start... similar to my old HDD booted PC.. not normal for a NVME! So I'm thinking about cloning my SK Hynik boot drive on another WD Black, to get a faster and more stable system. Any thoughts or tips?
I don't have any tips but give it a try and let me know how it goes. I have not had the same experience with the SK Hynix but I was cooling it quite well. Good luck with everything and if you find anything out report back.
I just switched to a WD SN860X 4TB from the 2TB SK Hynix for the same issue.
My SK Hynix is acting weird. It slows down to much and gets too too hot all the time.
I gave up on it as the start up drive.
I’d get a 990 Pro but since my
4TB WB SN850X runs great & cooler (w/o a thermal pad) than my 2TB 980pro and the 990Pro doesn’t come in a 4TB yet, I’m sticking with the WD.
Next month Samsung will release their 4TB 990Pro for around $350. I found the WD’s brand new for $270 each. They work great.
It’s a little to late now.
I’m set.
Shocked that theres no kingston
They can be good too.
i recommend silicon power for price to performance, got me a gen 4 5 gb write and read 4tb for 150 bro, i got 3 tb free and tons of AAA installed, wtf i overbought, for once
Yes, I have done a few videos on Silicon Power drives. So far for me they have worked very good and overall I would buy them again.
Silicon power as of right now is now 95
Thanks for the info.
Recent versions of Silicon Power SSDs all suck in reliability. They are hardcoding SMART data! Overheating SSDs are now fixed to read 40 C. Found this on my 1 and 2 TB SATA SSDs. The number of reviews of failures is alarming! I should have bought a well-known brand!
I have not seen that or heard that. I have 3 and all work as expected. I'll see what I can find.
i got a kingston kc3000 1tb for 49 dollars this month in my country
Not bad ... Thanks for posting
What is the real use case for super fast m.2...outside of video development...does fortnite run just as fast on a SP 1tb compared to a firecuda 530...what about cyberpunk? Oh...don't forget WD green...
Yes, for video editing on a Mac with external SSD is main reason plus music, photo, and things like that. I'm a Mac channel so that is what most use it for.
@@craigneidel I have 2 Jeyi cases. i REALLY LIKE them because they just bloody work and the packaging shows care and effort, unlike some of the "cheaper" one who wrap the product in saran wrap and cardboard and ship it out. I actually bought the second one as an excuse to do another build.
Nice, and thanks for the info. Stay with what works best is my motto.

bruh, the western digital blue is like 100 dolars in my country, well, I mean, we have an import tax of just 109% lmao
Yes, I have heard that in Australia (I'm guessing you are from around there) it's super expensive for tech. I was shocked to be honest and not sure why they tax it so much.
What no review of Kingston KC3000? Fastest M.2 for $100 or £118 check it out
I can take a look but not sure yet. Thanks for the info.
Thanks to the Chinese, ssd & ram prices are lower for the higher storage capacity. I'm not complaning here. 😁
They are slightly lower but only now but for a while they all went up especially SSDs.
Samsung 💪💪💪💪💪! Top! Best of the best!
They are good drives
Round up the price 24.99 just say $25
I like the $24.99 - save the penny.
There are a lot of fake Samsung disks now. especially the cheap ones. Don't expect them to last long, or be reliable, they get slow writing, and produce errors.
If you get a real Samsung disk I have found them to be one of the best out there. But if you did buy a fake one then for sure you could have issues.
Timestamps please. And there is little real world benefit from buying now outdated, slower drives. PCIE Gen 4 as the baseline makes sense, unless someone has a Gen 3 or older system, that they won't be upgrading in the next few years.
For sure it will depend on your system. Also, for backup drives even SATA M.2 are fine if it's just for basic backups as you won't need to deal with the heat issues and the speed will be fine.
Generation 3 makes great for just backups & storing files.
There cheaper now too.
I use Gen4 for just start up/boot drives.
For storage, Gen3 is fine & cheap.
I got a Lexar NM610 Pro 1TB for $30 after coupon ($37 list). Probably a QLC drive so I'm not expecting it to be awesome, but still friggin cheap.
That is a very good deal. They are great drives for the money considering what else you can get in that price range. Thanks for watching.
@@craigneidel I bought it with the intention of using it in my daughter's laptop but I think I jumped he gun too quickly when I bought it. There have been some reports of poor write performance, so reliability seems questionable. I hope it can be solved through firmware updates.
I think it should work fine but let us know how everything goes.
@@craigneidel I'll install it as my main SSD but I'm just too lazy these days (busy) to take out my current SSD and install everything from scratch. Lol. I think it needs a firmware update.
I hear you. I have a ton of projects I am too lazy to do too. Funny.
Look at p3 reviews it slows way way way down
I have not noticed that with my use but it could be possible with others. It might depend on use case.

The only thing interesting in this video is the kodak ssd
Nice comment.
What’s the Cheapest way to build an Nvme NAS using these Cheap drives ? I need to build a 60tb Nvme NAS for Cheap.
Good luck with that. I would review drives with higher TBW to ensure they will last a long time and confirm they are compatible with your NAS if they will be in Raid. No cheap way to get to 60 TB though.
Thats a lot of SSD's any way you look at it. As far as price goes the sweet spot for drives right now is 2TB capacity. I think Linus did a review on a PCI-E unit that could accommodate a total of 21 m.2's, he used 8TB drives for a total of 168TB's of storage.... for a cost of roughly 31k. If you used 2TB drives you would only get 42TB's (only 🤣) which falls short of your goal quite a bit, with 4TB you would get 84 TB's but the cost of 4TB drives (not everyone makes them, Sabrent is one) you would probably be looking at 10k with the controller... so definately not cheap.
real this sux volttage and thermal .
what does
are any good to use in a PS5 ?
they should be but just check the comments on the Amazon pages for the individual drives.
