I've been watching football for 40 years. Roy Keane is the most consistent performer at the highest level I've seen anywhere in any country during that time. Roy Keane = Winner.

As a neutral observer myself, I remember on one occasion Man U getting stuffed 6-2 by Southampton in a league game. I realise I'm flying in the face of the most relevant statistic here but Keano was the standout player on that field.

He'd be wasted in this era. I don't mean that in a sentimental way, just his style and personality suited late 90's period so well. Was still quite old school then where players weren't going to the gym or on special micro managed diets. Keane was way ahead as a professional athlete - along with the rest of that united team - in a way that he wouldn't be now. Players aren't better, but they're more precious and better looked after

If Roy Keane was English, he would have been considered as the best centre midfielder the premium league ever had. No question. I find it hilarious when people compare Gerard to him. Don't get me wrong Gerard was one of the top top players of his time but Keane just controlled the centre of the park like no other. I have been to games were United were up 3-0 in the 80th and Keane would get subbed off and all of a sudden the team completely lose there shape and composure. People seriously underestimate what he brought to that team. He mastered the act of keeping possesion and patience to wait for openings in attack, never phased by playing a banal pass that kept the structure of the team at all times. Critics always go on about the sensational stuff and times he may of lost his temper, but at the back of it all he was a driven selfless leader who put his team first and won everything that could be won.
Same as Paul McGrath (born in London) ... if they played for England they'd both be in the XI.

I'm a Liverpool supporter but come on, Dalglish and Fergie, both went for this guy. Quality recognises quality. Everytime. Great captain. Would have loved to have had him at Anfield playing week in week out.

I sit in the Kop week in, week out. As a Liverpool fan I hated Keane in a United shirt. But I always respected him. An intelligent football fan doesn’t need to like a current player to respect their ability, and then give them plaudits after they’ve retired.
The point being made is that Dalglish (an incredible player and successful manager) and Ferguson (a hugely successful manager) saw his quality. Not who he signed years later you absolute mug. Id follow a different sport , go back to school, or google the word logic if I were you @Msec ses
@@jonlacey316 Daglish was at Blackburn, not Liverpool. And Roy already agreed to sign for Kenny. Roy never despised Liverpool, and he wasn't really a United fan at that time. Growing up, Roy Keane idolized Glen Hoddle and his team was Spurs (lol). All Roy knew that summer was that Forest had been relegated, Brian Clough had resigned, and he wanted to move on to win trophies.
It was a Friday afternoon when Kenny, Roy and Forest agreed terms. His wage would 40k a week, and Blackburn would pay Forest 4m (record fee). Blackburn office was closed so couldn't finalize the deal. Kenny Daglish and Roy shook hands, and agreed to sign on next Monday. Roy went back home to Cork that Friday evening, drank himself to death as usual on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday morning, the news broke, and SAF read about it, and moved in because we wanted Keane. Sunday morning, when Keane was still hang over, he got a phone call from Sir Alex, telling him who he was, and asked him if he had signed anything. Roy said he hadn't. So Alex said, come down tomorrow for a chat with me. Roy resisted the idea, but Alex said t was just a chat. Most of Roy's family were United supporters, so he came down to Manchester on Monday. SAF said the same thing as he said to Alan Shearer, that United would go on to win a lot of trophies with or without Keane, but with Keane United would win Europe. Shearer didn't quite buy it, but Roy did. On Monday, Kenny Daglish went crazy upon hearing Roy changed his mind, but Roy just shrugged if off and let the clubs negotiate a fee.
Martin Edwards was a stingy bastards, and eventually Forest agreed on a fee of 3.75m (still record fee), and Roy's salary was at 35k per week, less than what he'd get at Blackburn.
I am a Man Utd fan and I think Keane only “hated” teams out of respect when they were a threat to his team. As a pundit he is currently praising Liverpool and rightly so. He has always admired proper professionals which is what the current Liverpool psyche is. If he hated Liverpool, then their fans should take it as a compliment because it wasn’t hate out of malice.

It's easy to forget as so long ago but when Keane started at forest, he was awesome. In a team that had some superb players as well.
He went up another level or two in HIS play when he went to United (cos he had to).
And that's not at all meant a dig at Forest...at the time they had a fantastic, entertaining side.

Very underrated as a footballer. However, will never forget that incident when pre game, Patrick Vieira was having a go at Gary Neville and Keane got right into Vieira's face. Vieira's scared face said it all. Imagine the feeling it must give having a captain like that!

I understand many United fans will rage at this, but compare Giggs to C Ronaldo for goals and assists, both are wingers, both played for good United teams.
Giggs only ever hit double figures in goals at premier league twice! 24 seasons at United, when they were at the top of their game! Ronaldo in a mere 6 seasons at United destroyed Giggs season best of 13 goals 3 times with 17 goals, 31 and 18 goals respectively!
And then look at what he went on to do at Real Madrid, it speaks for itself!
Ronaldo is WORLD class, Giggs simply wasn't at his level!

I guess the closest player you could 'compare' him with in terms of importance would be Kante when Leicester won the league.
Don't really think there is a player that he can be compared to. Hardest working player I've ever seen. The semi final in the Champion's League against Juventus 2 nil down is the epitome of Keane.
He got a yellow knowing he'd miss the final and dragged that United team to victory, completely bossing the midfield of Zidane, Dechamps, David's and Conte.
