Dale, I know you did this rebuild years ago, but I found this whole series and found it interesting, and watched it all. I own a 2000 TJ w/ 4.0 that broke a piston skirt 2 months ago. Thanks to your entire series, I found the confidence to tackle my own rebuild. Just like you, I did all my own work minus the machine shop needs of cleaning, bore & hone, and cam bearings. Today I finished my install, and got it started and the camshaft ran in. So I cannot thank you enough for putting all this together for other home "mechanics"!!
Hi Dale, first of all thank you for quality of content. Learned a loooooot (no kidding) on your videos. I had a “no start” experience as well on my YJ after rebuilding it (engine untouched). After 3 weeks of headache and lot of money spend in all kind of parts I noticed that I switched the gas line out of the pump (yep a I’m a real champion.....) Glad you finish yours. Been following the rebuild since a while. Keep going!! Hi from a French who lives in Montréal!
Rebuilding my first engine 2004 Jeep Grand & should have everything together this coming weekend I hope..... your videos are the best out there! thank you very much for sharing!!!
Dale thanks for the videos. I followed along and rebuild with the same Enginetech parts my 1996 4.0 and I’ve put about 50 miles on it so far. Going to do the stroker build next.
I'm glad to see you got it to the break in point. that is alway fun. i'll be starting the break in on mine tomorrow. the cam break in is done just need to get the rings seated good now. i alway hate the 20 minutes of around 2000 cam break in on a new engine. have a good one and glad you figured the no start problem out also.
Je viens de regarder toutes vos vidéos sur la rénovation complète de votre moteur qualité de vidéo et explications géniales merci plus cas mis mettre aussi 👍👍👍 thank you
I just started my rig for the first time after building it. Your videos helped a great deal. I was just as nervous as you seemed to be. Mine started right up, like it was waiting on me. While seating the rings I think my crank position sensor died. And the saga continues...
I watched your entire series. It convinced me to buy a rebuilt engine instead. Regardless I followed much of your series to fully understand the process. Just finished Engie break in and all is good! Thanks for the great work.
@@Dd-bk7rr Not sure if this was meant for me. I purchased a remanufactured engine from S&J Engines. Sold more core after that. Time vs Money, this was a great investment. Two years later and working perfectly.
I was experiencing deja vu and then I thought you had a machine shop rebuild your next project and you were already trying to start it. Then I realized I had watched the live feed.
Hi Dale. Thank you for your wonderful videos. Thanks to you, I repaired the engine in my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0. When breaking in the engine, I used Amsoil SAE 30 Break-in oil. In the video "Engine rebuild part 31" you said that you would change the oil again with Amsoil SAE 30 Break-in. I've already changed the oil twice. Please tell me whether I can use this oil for subsequent changes?
I seen in the video one time you tried to start it, it had sparks at the battery terminal ,it looked like it was where the wires were clamped at the terminal end. On the ground side I think.
I enjoyed watching the series. I'm about to rebuild my 3.8 and will be using some of the same techniques. I was wondering, after 3 years, how you liked the Enginetech rebuild kit?
Dale, one thing if you are concerned with fuel being the issue, I acutally have a diesel in my jeep now and diesels hate air in the line, when i let the jeep sit for a while i will turn the ignition on *fuel pump comes on for a second or two*, then turn it to ACC then back to IGN again until im satisified. Most recently I jumped the relay to make it so the fuel pump is on with the igntion. Although this is pretty extreme for a regular ol 4.0l maybe that would help eliminate a fuel issue when starting? also it would let you confirm the fuel pump is working correctly.
hey man I just did a gasket with a rebuilt head and put my jeep all back together and it runs very sluggish you have to push the gas to the floor for it even to move. what do you think could be wrong. it have 343000 miles on it new parts cap and rotor, spark plugs, wires, not sure what's going checked the vacuum lines too so I'm lose.
@@JeepSolid thanks bro. I binge watched the entire 31 episode on the engine rebuild. Amazing and a big thanks for the time and effort that you put into it. ✌️
I just finished a rebuild on my 2001 Jeep xj 4.0, when I accelerate from a dead stop it don’t have much power to take off is that normal in the break in process?
Some people will remove the fuel pump relay and crank the engine. On a rebuild like this, I prefer to manually turn the pump without the engine turning over, because it's starting completely dry. Cranking it over turns the engine over dry. I don't like that
Zinc is known to plug Catalytic Converters so don't go crazy using it. I use (Hyper Lube) HPZ 212 It's a Zinc Replacement Additive one 12 OZ Bottle treats 5 to 6 Quarts of Oil and it's safe for Catalytic Converters, Price $ 12.36 a Bottle. This Product is sold on Amazon and make sure you get the exact type i mentioned. They have 2 types one is for older Engines that run no Cat's it's about half the Price. Read the back of the Bottle it explains just what type of Ride it's good for. I add a 12 OZ Bottle with every oil change at about 3 Thousand Miles. Zinc has been removed from oil these days. In older Flat Tappet Cam set up's it's needed to Protect your Lifters and Camshaft. Leaves a protective coating on the internals of your Engine. Maybe older Jeeps without a Cat can handle a high Zinc Content but my 2000 XJ has 3 Catalytic Converters 2 upstream and one just before the Muffler. If there's anything i am missing please feel free to fill me in.
My engine builder recommended Valvoline VR1 oil after break in. Made for classic cars w flat tappet engines. During break in it was the VR1 plus a bottle of zinc additive
Hey Jason, anytime in the future. If you have more knowledge than your friends. Don’t Debby downer them on camera and do it yourself and walk them thru it. Being a mechanic and seeing how you acted to “your friend” when he was first trying to crank it was frustrating
I'm about to break in my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee but I'm confused about the oil situation. Should I use all break in oil or can I use a quart of break in oil with the rest just regular 10-30w?

For sure the best, most informative video series I’ve found to get my 4.0 back on the trails again, thx much appreciated

Nice job
Thank you. You should get one 👍🏽
Congrats on the start up!! Cool videos keep them coming. I have a 04 and have learned a lot from you......
31 parts! Well done, so informative.
Thanks! My hope was to help other Jeepers out there.

Awesome!!
Carlos M same engine basically
Sweet here we go again!!
Haha. Yep. But this time I show the break in process I’m using 👍🏼
Oh how sweet...Good job guys

Thanks! Still have lots to do, including some body work and paint.

also out of interest what is that check engine light for? im guessing something silly like 02 sensor?
Yeah, fuel pump is working well. We tested that as well. Engine runs very smooth now! Still have to look into what the check engine light is though...
Have u did a video on how the kits holding together?

My first thought was vacuum lines as well.
Now with rebuild can you take your Jeep on long distances ?
How did you know that your oil pump was primed while the valve cover was on. I left mine off to see oil coming out the pushrods.
So was the starting issue just the ground wires? You had the timing correct the first time?
Hi Dale. About to embark on a rebuild and was wondering how the engine tech parts are holding up. Any feedback would be greatly
Hey! I’ve been happy with their products. Haven’t had any issues at all

After the full break in, what oil did you use?
Just wondering how did you throw off the timing? Was it from priming the oil pump? Thanks and congrats on finishing the build!
We thought the timing was off, so we backed the distributor off a tooth. We were incorrect. The timing was right. Had to put it back.
Hey would you continue to use Amsoil on your first oil change?
I’m confused wasn’t this a strocker rebuild? Maybe I missed is video wasn’t it able to be board out?
How long did you leave in the second oil fill with the zinc?
What kind of oil exactly did you use after your break in? Just curious because I’m currently putting a freshly rebuilt motor in my 90 YJ.
After it’s broken in, I’ll probably use Red Line 10-30

How would priming the engine work if the engine would have a coil pack instead of a distributor?"
Its the same
The camshaft sensor is located in the same location on the coil pack 4.0s
Thx guys!!
Did Ams Oil give you a reference number for anyone to use so you get credit for the reference?
No. Just their website.
I'm about to break in my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee but I'm confused about the oil situation. Should I use all break in oil or can I use a quart of break in oil with the rest just regular 10-30w?
I used 6 qts of break in oil
What size wheel and tires are on there
235 75 15 on it now, but that's not what I'm going to run. They're just temporary for now.
With electric vehicles, there will be no more breaking in an engine after a rebuild
