- A loose biography of surfer and documentarist George Greenough, one of the most famous and unique members of the surfing subculture.
Crystal Voyager is a 1973 Australian surf film directed by David Elfick. It was filmed by Albert Falzon, written and narrated by surfer, photographer and filmmaker George Greenough who had previously made the 1970 surfing film The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun.The soundtrack was written and produced and performed by G. Wayne Thomas and the 'Crystal Voyager Band".
The closing sequence, Greenough's short film Echoes, is generally considered to be the highlight of the film. Filmed with a camera in a waterproof housing strapped to Greenough's back, the sequence is composed entirely of slow-motion footage shot inside the curl of waves, edited to the 23-minute song "Echoes" by Pink Floyd. The group reportedly allowed Elfick and Greenough to use the music in their film in exchange for the use of Greenough's footage as a visual background when they performed "Echoes" in concert.

Remember watching this for the first time aged about 10 or 11 (born in 1965) on tv during summer holiday break from school. Not really understanding the quality of the camera work or the music. I watched it from start to finish. The film stuck in my memory for a few years after. I wish we could go back to this time, before the world turned bad and sour
Greatest surf movie ever. No GoPro.
Just boggles the mind what George accomplished 🌊
i think it might be greater than The Endless Summer.... and others....but hard to say....they're all different.
Amazing piece of history and Echoes by Pink Floyd just awesome
Fun fact…. Greenough didn’t ask permission to use Echoes and when Pink Floyd found out they made a deal with Greenough that he could keep using it in exchange that they got to play that segment on a huge round screen while they played Echoes live in concert when they were on the Darkside of the Moon tour. I saw them live in San Diego then doing this.
Wowwww!!! Spectacular!
Finally on RUclips and a look into early Channel Islands SURF GOLD

Love the whole soundtrack and aesthetic of this doc. Nothing else quite like it.
Use to have this on DVD in the 90s, first surf movie i encountered, ripped the soundtrack to listen to on CD going for a surf. Love the Rhodes and Moog. George is such an amazing inspirational person, ahead of his time from fin design, surfing lines, diy attitude and everything else. Thanks for posting this, making a rainy Friday night in the west of Ireland enjoyable and nostalgic.
Used to surf Rincon regularly in the late 60' and early 70's. Would see George in the lineup in pretty much any conditions. Always amazing to watch him rip on his machine.
Aloha! Thanks for share
I m 60 and I "ponder" what we now still call Surfing would be/look like if George Greenough didn t make surf movies(Chrystal Voyager 🙃
