Dodge 4.7 engine 16 tooth or 32 tooth tone ring, how to tell the difference. Dodge made a 2002 4.7 engine, and they made a 2002 and a half 4.7 engine. check the PCM. the 16 tooth tone wheel is used with the early JTEC controller and the 32 tooth tone wheel with NGC controller, two different levels of PCMs and different connectors and harnesses. 3 plugs on the PCM are an indication of a 16 tooth tone wheel, 4 plugs indicate a 32 tooth tone wheel. the 16 tooth tone wheel is used with the early JTEC controller and the NGC engines 2003-2007, (4-PLUG PCM) use a 32-tooth tone ring. the difference between these two vehicles, is the ECU on the 2002 4.7 has 3 connections on the box and the 2002 and half 4.7 has 4 connections. REMOVE the crank sensor under the vehicle using a 13mil. and look inside the empty sensor receptacle hole at the Crankshaft Reluctor Ring Teeth Tone. a 16 tooth on tone ring has WIDER teeth and wider spaces between teeth. the 32 has SMALL teeth. CONFIRMATION: 16 is a 3 plug with external TCM and a 32 is 4 plug, the intake is smooth on s 16 tooth vs the rough 32. note: PCM (Powertrain Control Module), ECU (Engine Control Unit) and ECM (Engine Control Module) terms are sometimes used interchangeably.
so... what about the tooth count difference on the cam gear? are you guys pulling the rivets and putting the older sprocket on to the "new" reluctor wheel or are you doing an entire timing kit. because the chain does not go onto the sprocket of the new one

I replaced my 4.7 engine in a 2004 ram the engine come from a 2002 both don’t have egr. Now won’t starts is there any way to move the new engine harness and computer to my truck?
no, no, no the wiring harnesses are different, this is why just love chrysler crap, I'm pissed right now because I have to pull the engine again, pulled a 2004 and a 2002 to put the 04 into the 02, and I should have known when the wiring harness from the 04 is plug and play and comes off with the engine and the 2002 wiring stays on the truck. and I'm not about to experiment on a customers truck to meld wiring harness.
@@yamahazard2698 yeah thinking you can do it while engine is in is funny i thought that was the case til i had to buy a engine stand lol so much easier to trust me but you have to get the motor mounts off also
If you have a 32 tooth engine and put it in a (3 plug 16) tooth jeep will it run?... I have a jeep I had to put a passenger side head in and now i'm getting a engine codes saying intermittent or no signal from cam and crack sensors? any idea. I'm afraid I have an early 2003 jeep built in DEC 2002 with a 16 tooth engine and might have been sold a 32 high output head. could the difference in cams cause problems or timing issues? HELP!!!
ThebillyrayX - did you ever figure this out? If not, a 16 will not run in a 32 or vice versa. check the computer to see which one you have. Should be under the hood on the passengers side near the firewall or on some jeeps I’ve seen them in the right corner where the firewall and the fender intersect. I’m sorry but I don’t remember which is which. (I think the 16 is three plugs and the 32 is four but I could have it backwards). Good luck.
The wiring harnesses to the computer are different. One version has three plugs and the other four. I don’t remember off hand which is which but it definitely matters.
Robert Mueller You might as well rebuild the entire engine since you'd have to take the main and rod caps lose. Might as well replace those bearings and hone the cylinder walls as well as get a valve job while your at it and a rering kit. Cheaper just to find a similar JTEC.
Hi guru, i have a dodge dakota 4.7 2005 4x4 (not HO with egr) and it ''tick'' and the problem come from the #1 piston. What i want is to buy a block only and rebuild it(because i got new heads & timing chains and they work perfect). I have the opportunity to buy a block but it come from a dodge 2005 4.7 RWD (not HO with egr). The question is, are both blocks identical ? will it work ? (my goal is to get experience in block rebuilding and of course, swapping both blocks rapidly without waiting about other poeples to do what i can do myself(lol)and if it work, i will be very happy)
Marco if you check your PCM (Program control module) and it is 3 plug connectors then you have a jtec engine. But if your PCM has 4 plug connectors your engine is a HO (High Output) and it has 32 teeth
Any idea what all might be involved in putting a 2008-up 4.7 in my 2004 Dakota? I can see needing the adapter plate for my cable-operated throttle body and maybe having to fire only 8 of the 16 plugs, but I've heard the 2004 Dakotas might have the right PCM setup. If the swap isn't too awfully bad, I would rather upgrade than simply replace. My original 4.7 told me it needs retiring two days ago, so I have to swap, but would like to upgrade.
porthos6914 - exactly. I made that mistake once. Wasted three days of work to install and then remove the wrong motor. Sucks… and my pride was pretty hurt as well
I made so many of these , both styles. Hand bombed a 1200t sizing press. 450 to 500 an hour.
hi do u still sell the kit ?
It's 16 and 32 tone wheels "guru"

Do you still have the kit for sale?
Will the wiring harness interchange from the 2003 to 2002 with brain box
i thought the 4.7's were either 16 or 32? not 12 or 32???
He said 12 but it's actually 16
If you swap 32 tooth to 16 tooth reluctor, are there any other differences in the block? I plan to use my old heads (rebuilt).
DITTO
No difference. I just did this swap
What if I need the opposite kit? Is that something you have too?
are these guys still in business? I'm in need of restrictor ring conversion kit
can you take older 4.7 16 tooth to 32 tooth?
I have a 2003 4.7 ram, the computer has 4 connectors but only 3 are used, the other has nothing, and the motor has 16 or 32 teeth.

It does go on. It's identical. It's only difference is the windows on the gear

would this be the same for a 2009 300c 5.7? 8/11/2023
what kit?

I have same question as u! Did u ever get it running?
Matt and kat Christie no sir, I just pull the engine out and go with the right engine,
I brought an 05 4.7 to put in my 06 and I don't have EGR or knock sensor locations
Where can you get the bolts? One of my bolts had to be cut off so I need to replace the bolts
Can you just hook up a newer computer and harness that matches the new engine instead of pulling the crank out?
The computer would have to be programmed to that vehicle by the dealership
no, no, no the wiring harnesses are different, this is why just love chrysler crap, I'm pissed right now because I have to pull the engine again, pulled a 2004 and a 2002 to put the 04 into the 02, and I should have known when the wiring harness from the 04 is plug and play and comes off with the engine and the 2002 wiring stays on the truck. and I'm not about to experiment on a customers truck to meld wiring harness.
It's s lot more work than rebuilding the engine
Do have to pull the motor just to change the crank shaft tone ring
Yep

Can I take a 03 4.7 and put it in the same place as a 00 4.7 just by changing this
crank+position+sensor same for 16 and 32 ?
Nbbbn pp hblbpa
interested in purchasing one of these kits, where do I get it from ?

the bolt patterns look slightly differant...
nope they bolt on the same just did this
Why do I need to replace the cam gears?
So, are the 4.7's interchangeable between different years of dodges and jeeps because of this?
Yes Just might take some extra work to make them match up together
Hello, I installed a 2004 engine on a 2006 Grand Cherokee, do I need to insta that kit?
No
It wont start if you uave to fo the kit
can the computer be reflashed or programed to match up
no you cannot
The wiring harnesses to the computer are different. One version has three plugs and the other four. I don’t remember off hand which is which but it definitely matters.

16 tooth wheel is a 3 plug pcm
Never did he say the price
I count 16 teeth on the left ring
+Fred Allen Me too..
Where can i get the kit to swap from a 32 tooth to a 16 tooth?
