Well we are still working on it but I hope to get a 'usable' engine later this week and wrap this project up as I'm tired of looking at it. Thanks for sticking with me and all the great comments on the previous video.

@AngryGunNerd One is gas the other hot water, neither work. I have a small electric heater that I use but it only heats a small area in the shop.
@evilperson86u No worries, I kick it's butt in the end. Thanks for the comment.
@gjmvi That was how the problem started with this truck, then there was this whole 'water in the oil' thing that was pretty much the kiss of death.
@LeoKoneval So far they are doing what they can to make it right, if that changes however I will have to seriously consider your recommendation.
@DieselCrawler86 What's funny is I found out today that the reason the water was there and the fuel rail was missing is because the took the rail out and pressure washed the engine. I asked them not to do that with the next engine they sent me.
@Figo1121 I'm sure that works for you but for me time is money and it takes much less time to replace an engine than it does to rebuild it properly. Thanks for your comment.
@Cook1467 I found out today that is exactly what they did to this one. Why they took the fuel rail out before they washed it is beyond me however.
@Vidsandso Yea but ice turns into water and water in the cylinder can bend or break a connecting rod, I didn't want to risk it.
@JayEm7516 Their not haters so much as people who like to be right, I understand where they come from I just wish they would lighten up sometimes. The truth is I get a lot more positive feedback than negative but sometimes thats hard to focus on. Thanks for your comment.
@andrewthompsonuk1 I already sent it back and to be honest I had little interest in that as I wanted the truck to run and go away. When I found out that I didn't have a usable engine I went home where it's warm.
@sleepinggiant90 I wouldn't call them idiotic, people do make mistakes, it's how they deal with those mistakes that makes the difference. I found out today that they actually removed the fuel rail and pressure washed the engine, I asked them not to do that this time.
@AtreyusArchaicAvengr No offense was taken, thanks for the comment.
@phoenix11994466 Well thanks for that comment and vote of confidence, I do try to entertain.
@Michiganborn1969 The one I took out? Honestly I don't remember.
@Robinson4643 Actually the northstar head gaskets last year were worse.
@blazinloud In the end I'll actually get paid twice. The bad part is that it's kept me from getting other work done but I can't sweat what I can't change.
@TheGetawayer Don't care about the hands I just think it would be cool to hang out with you for a bit, perhaps we could borrow one of those cool cars you drive and spin it on the autobahn.
@agretz Cool, just don't get in trouble on my account watching my videos. Thanks for the comment and for watching at work.
@ts46176 Thanks. I'll get it done, this week I hope.
@phoenix11994466 I will keep that in mind, thanks for the input.
@Begbucks Water doesn't belong in an engine, especially in the combustion chamber. Yes ice melts and turns into water but water is not compressible and if you start an engine with water in the cylinder you will bend or break a connecting rod. Would you risk it?
@jerrhan I'm not rebuilding the engine, as I said too much time and money to do that.
@920gamez No need, they yard is paying my labor and sending me a new engine. I'm a little worn out from the experience but there really is nothing I can do.
@bowlingballout I don't wear a watch so probably not.
@bossthadal Not really, perhaps a little smoke. Transmission fluid and engine oil are very similar, transmission fluid has more detergents in it that can be beneficial in breaking up a rust ridge caused by an engine that has sat unused for a while.
Eric I want to say I learn from your video and got great info of auto repair I wouldn’t get somewhere else. Professional will complain but should only give you suggestion but, we who are just learning appreciate the help. Thanks
Good call man, just keep your head up, i have rebuilt a yota motor for a buddie of mine and it kept blowing head gaskets after the build was done due to an over milled head, its hard to keep going back but you will get it done!
@SwampBogger I'll find out this week. Thanks for the comment.
@ProjectCarTV Didn't go any farther than what was in the video but the scoring on the counterweight would indicate that there are probably metal parts loose somewhere inside the engine causing it to bind, perhaps the thrust bearing.
The person who admits his mistakes or his weaknesses is a Great Individual. I liked really very much that you accepted your mistake rather than giving lame excuses. That's why I really like you Eric.
THANKS MAN,I ALREADY LOOKED ANOTHER SIMILLAR TRUCK AND THIS HOSE IS A BREATHER FOR THE CANISTER SYSTEM IT RESTS BEHIND THE DRIVERS SIDE HEAD BLOCK AND ITS CAPPED OFF BUT STILL BREATHS THANKS ALOT.
@ple3l5 I know I'm not perfect but I honestly have no idea what your asking me.
@maddluckz Send me a PM with the video and I'll have a look.
@DodgeMan360 Indeed it is, thanks for the comment.
@Michiganborn1969 So far the owner is cool, I don't think it will stay that way if they bring me another engine I can't use.
@eleeter Aparently the check is "in the mail" for the labor on the other engine. The funny thing is I found out today that the engine they sent me was pressure washed by them and they removed the fuel rail, I asked them not to do that with the next engine they sent me.
@vigorstyle916chino To be honest I don't have a clue, you might pose this question to a person at a parts counter with an exploded view of the parts you are looking for.
@blazingtonight1 As for fuel consumption there are a lot of things that could come into play here, start with diagnosing any check engine lights you might have and then look to the basics like plugs, wires, air filter, and tire pressure. If you don't find anything there then look for vacuum leaks and check the output of the coolant temp sensor as this is one of the most important sensors for fuel economy.
@Paki2c To be honest I'm not an expert in this area however I know of a channel that does a lot of turbo work, ProjectCarTV, there is a link on my channel, ask him and see what he says then let me know what you find out so I can file it in my mental rolodex.
all dodge and chrsyler products (except jeep wranglers) are a pain to work on. dont fret! stay dirty love the vids keep em coming
@vigorstyle916chino Good luck.
@h23sirlude Yea, the ones that think they know something are the most dangerous.
@321980dk Wow that sucked. Thanks for sharing.
@vigorstyle916chino Altering the suspension would be costly and time consuming, what you describe sounds like a damper problem so I would start by replacing the shocks. I would also check your tire psi as if they are overinflated it may exhibit the same symptom if they are.
eric didnt do any wrenching or bolting.........still an awesome video and great words of wisdom!!
I fucking hate the snow. That's one of the reasons why I left Detroit for LA. Being a car guy, you can get yourself a nice old school snow blower, tune it up, and have a little fun clearing the driveway.
Your right its expensive the rebuilding process than the replacing it. Thanks a lot !
@orville58 Aren't those valves on the shelf next to the muffler bearings?
great one amigo really honest and some people appreciate all you do amigo good luck in the next engine.
@mazzmari I hope not.
@finalman82 I think I had the same reaction. Thanks for your comment.
Your absolutely right on the High in sight thing,,, 20/20 you live you learn. I have learned one thing about being a mechanic and you have to have patients.
And no two jobs are really the same!, or you would be here in Michigan working on an assembly line! LOL have a great day Eric.
@sheldo81 Yea, that sucked.
I know how frustrating it can be dealing with bad part after bad part. Hang in there, man. Stay dirty!
@EricTheCarGuy no worrys eric
happy 2nd birthday champ
@vigorstyle916chino Glad you got it sorted, thanks for the update and the comment.
Ice in the cylinders. Couple of hours with a blowdryer. I would probably ask questions if i get a bill from a garage where they would charge me for that.
Good luck with the truck!
Maybe it's time to find a new salvage yard? They don't seem too concerned about the conditions of their engines. A motor full of ice is pretty bad, I don't don't often see stuff like that even at my local PicknPull.
For the complainers that say Eric should have checked the engine first, if you have ever worked on cars you know that when on a timeline, mistakes happen. There is no a mechanic alive that hasn't made mistakes! Appreciate the videos Eric.
@EricTheCarGuy Good luck with the search...good luck with getting the engine in!
@4x4PROX I do have the best viewers on YT no doubt.
i know your not perfect. you just like the answer to alot of back yard mechanics prayers lol. you show alot of tips and that saves us time.. alot of time. thank you for that
@jialunjiao It may be coolant from the water pump. You can verify this by pressure testing the system and observing the area where you suspect the leak from. I cover this procedure in the Diagnosing an Overheat video. Good luck.
@Paki2c Thank you!
@jialunjiao The blinking S light could be a problem, you may want to look into what code is stored for the transmission.
@EricTheCarGuy - I was wondering if you found a spun bearing or 5.
hey Eric, I wasn't trying to sound like an ass, more sarcastic was my intent. I totally agree with your opening statements about mistakes and learning from them. It takes a real man (or woman, don't want to offend anyone!) to admit they made a mistake and I think it is especially rare in this business. GOOD JOB!!!
you have a golden voice by the way
@jialunjiao The first thing I would check is the gasket you just replaced especially if the leak was not there before you started. Keep me posted on what you find.
@dwillford I had the thought but I'll let them make good before I go there, I know I'd hate to be on the wrong side of the ETCG Army. I like that, perhaps a t-shirt.
As if anyone who has done a bunch of motor swaps hasn't done this, or checked other parts to see if they're good before putting em in, pain in the ass, but this is what its almost always like doing these things, long, painful, and rediculous, ahhh the wonders of mechanics!
I think we are all waiting to hear that truck run and not sound like a bad diesel!
Would it be possible to do an autopsy on the old engine? I am very interested in the sequence of events that led to the failure and what the owner could have done to avoid it.
Holy hell, djcatdog needs to go back to school. Not learning from your mistakes is the worst mistake. "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results"-Albert Einstein. You're the man Eric, I watch your videos all the time. You have the patience of a monk compared to most people, and the fact that you film all this is crazy! I flip out when the phone rings and Im in the middle of something haha don't know how you do it, but we like it!! Thanks!
great vid but you forgot one thing "always anticipate problems" those are words from a good friend
@djcatdog525 Not exactly, if you didn't do any machining then your 'rebuild' may not last as long as you might think, it's not just about replacing parts it's also about making sure the clearances are correct between them and for that a qualified machinist is your best friend. You also need to consider the time it took you to do the rebuild, if time is money then you have to factor that into your $650, a 20hr rebuild at $40 per hour (cheep) is another $800 for a total of $1450.
great vid eric, sorry to hear about the engine.
@paxilill Yes I have and there have been other times where I wish I had. I think every mechanic has something they wish they didn't work on. Thanks for the comment.
your a good guy eric hang in there
we are all only human thus we all make mistakes that is how we learn.Keep up the good work car guy.
@anyone with the melt the ice theory...
He explained in the video. Common knowledge is that when water freezes it expands. When it expands it can and will crack motors. I.e why antifreeze exists.
Ever have an old plastic ice pack crack for no apparent reason? Same idea.
i saw your heater and that got me thinking: is it powered by natural gas or used motor oil? the ones that run on used motor oil seem pretty sweet, perfect for someone who does a lot of oil changes.
Hey man, common mistake. My buddy once spent a grand on a 454, we put it in his truck and found out then that it was full of water. Luckily tho, the guy took the motor back and gave my buddy his $1000 back, hard to find people like that nowadays!
@Begbucks The thing with ice is like Eric said it expands. With ice in the spark plug tubes and in the intake it could have expanded enough to possibly crack the head. Dont want to put another engine in just to find out you have to pull it again :P
@Kingsoupturbo It can be that way sometimes but it seems I was born to it and in many ways I'm grateful for that. Thanks for the comment.
@jtech23 Funny, the yard I called said the same thing when I first called them. Sometimes you just have to humor people, thanks for the comment, and even better for making this video worth while by letting me know that my mistake helped you.
The fact that you're willing to make mistakes, be wrong and keep it a buck with the rest of us is what makes you a GREAT mechanic and human being, and what will teach the next generation of mechanics and people. Thank you.
Hasta luego Eric... Thanks..
I have to put an engine in a cobalt at work.. we got the used engine from the salvage yard and i remembered your video. So I checked the engine to see if it would turn and the engine is seized. We called the salvage yard and they said " uh yeah, happens all the time, just put some tranny fluid in the cylinders". So I did that just to make them happy, knowing it wasn't gonna work. Let it sit over the weekend, Surprise Surprise it didnt work. So now I'm waiting for another engine. LOL
I love you video's ,Im from ohio so i know about that cold white stuff in your driveway, and working in it ,I live in st petersburg florida now , I feel for you working in that cold, Keep up the good video's
@RamblinAround Me too.
@YosmanyLoudAndClear I do plan to do a series of videos on that at some point but in your case you would probably be better off just replacing the engine with a used one as it will be a lot less expensive and take a lot less time. Thanks for your comment.
@KillerZero259 Thanks for that, I gave what I had I'm just glad when a video gets watched. Thanks for the comment.
you can basically put any engine in any vehicle with the right fabrication. plus with it being a dodge engine it would make it easier for you.
@TheTexasCoder First welcome aboard and second thanks for the great comment I really appreciate it. I'll keep your suggestion in mind should should they bring me another bad engine.
Hey man... you need to be perfek!
XD
===
Is there really a watch on that wrist? 2:41
Man that sucks. I hate it when things get so drug out you feel exhausted with the whole situation. Hopefully this idiotic yard isn't the only one available to you. I like the dirtay thing. Thanks for the video Eric.
@colinmartens I actually got rid of that engine when I moved so I won't be able to do that sorry. Thanks for the comment though.
cool eric ur the man good adressing
@jasondog37wolf I treat all the things I work on as if they were my own, I think it's good policy personally.
@ChubbyLoveDumpster Your welcome, thanks for letting me know with this great comment I really appreciate it.
@chillincruisin I found out today that they actually pressure washed the engine and removed the fuel rail before they sent it to me, I asked them no to do that with the next engine they send me.
