Hi Eric, Earl here with 44 yrs experience. Good attitude you have and really was inspired by the 3 part videos. I work similarly in your fashion of I will work on a vehicle for 10 minutes and clear my thinking and go over the details of my 10 min of work and relax and I generally get a job done faster than your average that works constantly for 4 hours and cusses and gets frustrated. I can pull an engine and not get my clothes that dirty. I never start any job without first realizing what can it lead to if things get, well you know
@Gizmopflege We have winter tires but there are only some places in the US that require that you use them, mostly remote mountain areas. Thanks very much for that 'international' comment, I just think it's soo cool that people are watching my videos in Finland.
@flipmodeOptimus It helps break up any rust that might be in the cylinder due to it not running for some time. Transmission fluid has detergents in it that would help with that better than just regular oil.
i've been wrenchin' for years and your hitting it on the head with this vid. going into a job relaxed and taking breathers is key. checking all your tools is another most. great vid soup to nuts.
I just want to thank you for taking the time to walk us through all this mechancal stufff. I know it is a pain to take the time to do these videos but truly it helps so many people like me and again want to thank you.
Of the back yard car repairs I've done, I've only ever swapped 1 motor - a V8. The most satisfying moment for me of all the various relatively minor repairs I've done was when that new motor roared to life. It was sweet. Very sweet.
Hey my friend, I really appreciate your candor and honesty. I truely love vehicles, it feels like playing with big boy LEGO’s. I am strongly considering either being a mechanic or a mechanical engineer. I’m currently a painter and truely do despise half of my clients, I’d much rather deal with a machine that can always be coherced into behaving. Truely do admire you man
Hi Eric I feel your pain being in the same spot you have been and are now. I have been a mechanic for many years I have had troubles with parts and bolts, I'm glad to see the truck running I have watch all 3 vids and they are put together every well.
@sevendragon Thank you very much, I spend a lot of time making the videos and it's always nice when my work is acknowledged in this way. Thanks for the comment.
I'm going to have to get a engine for my 96 Ram 1500, I fixed my moms car recently, it had a bad head gasket, I'm relatively new to working on engines, but I find a lot of times browsing youtube for information helps a lot, as well as using common sense and a repair manual doesn't hurt, I found it pretty easy so far. I personally would like to get my hands into the guts of a engine, I find them so fascinating .
I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel. Not only do you give out step by step information but your presentation (video editing) is excellent. very unique and well done for this self filmed "how to" automotive genre.
I give you MAJOR props for doing this alone, that is one hell of a job man, i have pulled about 30 motors and pulling them is easy but stabbing them along is not something everyone has the will power to do. Good job!
another great video! congrats on finally getting the engine in. a note about finding tools, I remember taking the radiator out of a car one day, the socket fell down somewhere, I spent 45 minutes trying to find the socket before I gave up... it Disappeared, Took the car out to test it and VOILA! the socket fell out of the car, I dont know where it come from but hey it showed up!
so glad I changed my career choice 23yrs ago, saved myself from 23yrs of busted knuckles, cuts, smashed fingers, burns, shit getn in your eyes.....not to mention like u said, the stress....much happier driving a truck than fixin trucks......dont know how u guys can do that for 30years or more....i couldnt do it....
Awsome series Eric. At the Honda dealer 2 years back where I worked I had a similar issue with a guaranteed 1.7L 01 Civic motor. I definately learned a similar lesson. Only having one lift the car was tied up for 3 days. Being flat rate and all working on the alignment rack for a couple days was nooo fun.
@karkraz To be honest this is the first time I've ever had any trouble with a salvage yard engine, hence the reason I didn't put a whole lot of effort into checking it out before I installed the first one.
good video,i did the same thing on a 02 dodge ram 1500 4.7 and did it all in 5 hours i tooked the old engine out and got the new one in with no problems..thanks to your videos.it really helped me alot.thanks!
Youre the man. Honestly, i know how frustrating it can be to deal with mecanical things like this. I do mechanic jobs for a side job for almost 10 years now and i must admit, at some point i wanted to just leave it i mean to just quit!! You really have to take a step back and wait a little! I admire the fact that youre still taping it while its not going always as smooth as you wish!! Good work there! -Léo
@melecio1 As for a short or long block that depends on what is damaged in the engine, how many miles are on it, and sometimes what is available. As for labeling the cables if that helps you get it back together correctly then heck yea. Good luck.
@rebelsoutherner Thanks for that, I just take it slow and careful till it's in. To be honest this job wasn't that bad it was waiting for the salvage yard that sucked.
Youre so consistent and persistent. You teach us all how to be patient. Thank you Sir. Wede like to see some sort of follow up on this one, if you could.
@EricTheCarGUy - Until you said that the d16 threw a rod, I was going to suggest that you throw it into the Dodge and at least it would reliable. Thats my joke for day. Zing! Good work. I'm filming a few turbocharger rebuilds at the moment and I'll be doing a few engines in the coming months as well. Come to think of it, I need to look into a buying a truck myself. It's much easier, especiialy in situations like yours. I've been there waiting for parts and gotten excuses myself. Many times!
All the years I've been doing my own oil changes I tried only once to prime filter like that mainly because it's hard to keep the oil from spilling back out while treading it back on the mount. 99% of all the vehicals I did changes on the filters go on at most a 5 degree angle. That Ram was easy to do that to b/c the mounts upright. When I'm ready to start an engine after a change, I'll crank/turn the motor over 3 - 4 times before staring it.
Awesome Eric I love swaps of all kinds and spending time buying the special tools that make evrything much easier. Tool shooping, church and big jobs= my passion. Pax Dominus sit semper vobiscum!
Glad to see you had a happy ending there eric, I'm glad you finally got it cause I would of hate to see you retire. Just remember your doing US all a huge favor. Thank you eric. P.s. have you ever thought about taking an intern to help you knock out some extra work, while helping them get a start in the automotive sector?
@jwed6 First I have to wait for the owner to get me an engine and he doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry, after that I need to edit it and as of this writhing I'm about 4 videos behind on my full length stuff. There just aren't enough hours in a day.
Eric !! You are one awsome dude.Honest and so much knowledge and experience.very detailed in most cases.i have a dodge ram1500 4.7 2003 model 284000 miles, the engine locked up .dont know the cause yet.I am a diy person and i am going to tackle this thing myself in my driveway under no cover.I will for sure stay dirty. THANKS FOR AL, THE VIDIOS. Larry
At the sign post ahead it's EricTheCarGuy-Zone lmao. I wonder how many viewers including myself wanted to do a little jiggy (little dance) when the beast finally fired over. Yippie!! You da man Eric!
i had goose bumps when you fired it up i was thinking it was just going to crank and this is what i wanna do for a living because i just love cars i already have my 2 years of college but just havent had any luck getting in anywere i was wondering if you could do a episode on how you did it and tips . that would be great i hope u get this message eric
Automotive has its own Challenges not every vehicle build goes as Planned pulling a motor and putting it back in is a job its self eric is a true Mechanic or technician want every you want to call him he does Excellent work Everyone can Have their own opinions on what to do when rebuilding a track or car engine but when you truly get your hands Dirty And experience it you will never know how hard it truly is laying on your back and Cutting your hands and covered in grease its hard but fun at the sametime God bless everyone and take care
I guess the smoke was the transmission oil you used when you spun the engine by hand. You made this look easy the second time around. You should give the junk yard manager your RUclips address.I know what you mean about losing tools. Last week I left one of those rechargeable trouble lights hanging under a drive train, as it drove away never to be seen again. Ha ha, thanks for posting.
The bled plug for cooling system is the correct way to get all the air and it might take 1/2 hr to do it, better than dropping a valve seat or head gasket very touchy on getting all the air out. Or it’s only on 4.7 jeep engine the engines are the same. Good job hope my replacement is as easy. I rebuilt a 4.7 and need a shop to put it in. Bottom to top rebuild with HO cams, HO springs, HO intake manifold, 12 hole injectors, .50 over sized flat top pistons, forged crankcase, new oil pan, filter, new timing chains and guides, rockers and lash adjusters to much to list it all. their going to pick up both truck and motor sat. Install next week. I’ll be there to crank it over without plugs or fuel to get oil throughout engine. Then the big start. Not my first rebuild I trust my work after the last asshat screwed me over by not doing the job correct.
Explain to your customers the disadvantages of 'salvage' yard things. When/if i replace my 96 Jeep ZJ 5.2 i will go for a re manufactured unit or rebuild the current one-- what i have found is that besides the potential problems with salvage yards it seems that their customer service sucks
Hey Erick...I want to do this too but the only thing holding me back, is if it's overly competitive. I love cars and you're right.."you can't change people, but can change machines. You could always change the outcome there". I'm still in college and I'm lost. I don't know what to do with my life.
@jasondog37wolf I am the same way, I don't like loaning my tools out, it just feels, wrong. It really depends on the person though, some people are cool others, not so much.
Nice job and I prefer vids that show Everything. I'm getting ready to pull just the block out of my 2006 durango I bought for $400 due to a blown head gasket, but the oil pan is rotted thru the 1st layer of steel, and yes this does have 4x4.
Eric you never curse! I work as an auto tech and doing this kind of work can be frustrating. But you never curse! I wish I had you're Patience.
It's alive!! Glad to see that ordeal is over with. Nicely done Eric!

@Moosepiesandwich I like the old-timers tip. Thanks for your comments on the show, it means a lot to get this kind of positive feedback.
Thanks Eric, having or trying to have a positive attitude, sure make the journey better. Don't Get Mad, Get Dirty! Catchy.
@Gizmopflege We have winter tires but there are only some places in the US that require that you use them, mostly remote mountain areas. Thanks very much for that 'international' comment, I just think it's soo cool that people are watching my videos in Finland.

@pberglin Glad you liked them, thanks for listening.
@fastveedub Me either, the stress I had with this truck was bad enough. Thanks for the comment.
@spelunkerd You are correct it was the trans oil. I still haven't gotten paid for that. Sorry to hear about your light.
@Dabaleri I don't know if they are an interference engine or not but it is a single overhead cam engine.
i've been wrenchin' for years and your hitting it on the head with this vid. going into a job relaxed and taking breathers is key. checking all your tools is another most. great vid soup to nuts.

@sevendragon Thank you very much, I spend a lot of time making the videos and it's always nice when my work is acknowledged in this way. Thanks for the comment.
@TheMarksLegacy Thanks for the comment.
@BOBTUNNELTON Thanks very much for that inspiring comment.

Nice work. You have a ton of patience. This truck is one of the reasons why i hate doing mechanic work. You handled it well. Youre the man.

@green95gt It's always great to get comments like this from fellow techs it means a lot, thank you.
@chingville On this engine it's just above the oil filter if I remember right. Thanks for the comment.
@TheTexasCoder He was actually pretty cool about the whole thing. Yes, that was my Element.
@James1toknow Yea, I was a little punchy after this job but I was happy it worked out. Thanks for the comment.
I can't remember the last time I was entertained, inspired and learned something at the same time! Thank You!
@carnivore10 Indeed, thanks for the comment.
@racerjsf Yea they sure don't do us any favors sometimes. Thanks for the comment.
was about to shed a tear because of your speech near the end, great video.
Awsome series Eric. At the Honda dealer 2 years back where I worked I had a similar issue with a guaranteed 1.7L 01 Civic motor. I definately learned a similar lesson. @monoxygen2012 I love hearing stuff like that, I'm glad my videos inspire you. Thanks for the comment.
@urbex2007 I've done both short and long hair, for now I want it long. Don't be concerned, I can fix cars with long or short hair doesn't matter.
@TheGuitarslinger I should have checked it before I installed it really, I think that engine had a bent crankshaft.
@920gamez It cost enough. I'm not sure if you could just swap those engines however as I know the wiring harnesses would be different.
@melecio1 As for a short or long block that depends on what is damaged in the engine, how many miles are on it, and sometimes what is available. As for labeling the cables if that helps you get it back together correctly then heck yea. Good luck.
Must be the same salvage yard here in New Zealand ha ha.........nice job Eric, well done
Awesome job !
@619426 Sometimes it's just about what works, thanks for the comment. Good luck with your new profession.
@Jimmyretired Somedays it does seem that way but I'm actually about 30 miles from the shop, I used to live up the street from it but then I moved.
@rebelsoutherner Thanks for that, I just take it slow and careful till it's in. To be honest this job wasn't that bad it was waiting for the salvage yard that sucked.
@AutoTechHector Yea, I know the type, thanks for the comment.
@integraz32lover I would watch the Overheat video that I did, it might help you find the problem. The gauge might not be reading correctly.
@OtherVincentLee I think that might void the warranty on the engine though.
@bagitup247 You can't do what I do and take it personal, if you do you're done for. Thanks for the comment.
Youre so consistent and persistent. You teach us all how to be patient. Thank you Sir. Wede like to see some sort of follow up on this one, if you could.
@DodgeMan360 Yea some are better than others. Check out the engine I got for the Tahoe swap though, the complete opposite of this one.
@vigorstyle916chino Cool, thanks for the comment.
@Michiganborn1969 Nope, just very busy, haven't forgotten about you.
@sidhucer00789 Perhaps that was the issue, thanks for the comment.
@fastvpbt1 Start by adjusting the rear brakes (watch any of my drum brake videos) as you want to do that before adjusting any cables.
Thanks for going through this on video. Good job Eric!
@sexymd39 I just figure I better share it before I forget it. Thanks for the comment.
@fastvpbt1 Hello Australia! Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it.

@mattcasdorph It sounds like you like to get dirty, I like that. Thanks for the comment.
Hey that was my quote for years! Well similar. You cant change people, You Can change things!
@Warren19911 Yea, those were early simple EFI systems but held up well.
Great job on the engine install Erick. Hopefully the salvage yard reimburses you for your time.
Can't wait for the next video.
@Begbucks It might be, I couldn't say for sure.
@dendorssers I'm glad to know that you won't be throwing wrenches at my heat, that would suck. Thanks for the comment, made me laugh.
@ProjectCarTV Yes, relying on other people sucks sometimes. I look forward to seeing the videos when I get some time. Thanks for your comment.
Great job Dude,Way to hang in there, Things like this are what make you a pro.
Awesome Eric I love swaps of all kinds and spending time buying the special tools that make evrything much easier. Tool shooping, church and big jobs= my passion. Pax Dominus sit semper vobiscum!

@MRDRPEPPER915 I didn't have the air cleaner assembly on, you can hear the air going into the engine much more clearly with it off.
Cograts, dude. Can't wait to see the Honda overhaul!

@jet79637 That would be cool but I don't have a place to put it really, perhaps some day.
@rodrigoelgu Thank you, I love comments like this.
@kl97pg4 Thanks for listening!

@BigHouseOfBooty Awe, wait till you see tomorrows video, real tear jerker.
@30GB I covered that in part1, I don't remember the mileage however sorry.
@agretz Actually 2003 Element.

@TheTexasCoder Awesome, I do love to entertain.
Hey Erick...I want to do this too but the only thing holding me back, is if it's overly competitive. I love cars and you're right.."you can't change people, but can change machines. You could always change the outcome there". I'm still in college and I'm lost. I don't know what to do with my life.
You are a dork Eric, but you have a great work ethic. I also loved the body shot at the end of the video buddy.
Great vid eric your the man bro out of all the teachers I've had your my fav!
