How to install timing chains and check for correctly timed engine on dodge 4.7

  • Video will show how to compare new with old parts and installing timing chains, guilds , and tensioners. Also installing rockers and checking how to make sure you have timed your motor correctly. As for torque specs, most were between 21-22 flbs . idler sprocket bolt was 25 flbs. And cam sprocket bolts were 90 flbs. Now with the cam sprocket bolts, you must hold the sprocket in place while you torque the bolt to specs. If using new hydraulic chain tensioners, you can put them on whenever. If using same ones again and can't lock the the piston back then put the on last after chains and guilds are installed but dont rotate engine until you have torque the guilds down and tensioners installed with pistons pushing on the chain guilds . Torque the cam sprockes last after verify that timing is correct. I couldn't find a tool to buy or rent to aid me with this part of the job. So i had to improvise. But this is a last resort! Try to buy one if you can, i didnt want to wait for that tool to come in the mail plus i didnt want to buy a tool for 2 minutes worth of work. Heres what i did. I used a pipe wrench and put it on the cam between the lobes. It worked great and left only a line on cam. But it will not damage anything as i only grab between the lobes. DO NOT LOCK ON LOBES! Check timing before installing rockers to verify timing marks align. Spin motor 3-4 times. If not align redo the chains. If timing marks align, install rockers and spin motor again. If motor stops spining STOP and recheck your work because timing is not right. This 4.7 motor is an interference motor! If you can spin the motor with rockers on then you wont have any damage when you try to crank up the engine. And Most likely its timed correctly as well.
    Tools needed-
    10mm, 13mm, 15mm & 40 torex sockets with 3" extension and ratchet and torque ratchet, rocker arm removal/install tool, 10" or 12" pipe wrench , engine assembly lube, zip ties or rubberbans

    I rebuild engines for a living the sprocket is for a different crank tone ring newer model. You really put together a great video that shows more detail ( that equates to professionalism quality) than most. The amount of wear on that sprocket is nothing to worry about. Forget about it. Reiterating the crucial points was awesome. Its one of the best timing chain videos out there. Showing your marks more than once and clean camera angles makes it 2 thumbs up.

    Big Thanks for such a thorough video on installing timing chain. most just show marks lined up when binding on idler sprocket and jump right to everything installed with no explanation. I'm dealing with 180K miles and stretched head bolt that resulted in water jacket cutting through head to combustion chamber on head surface. Had to machine almost .040 off head and install a shim to maintain head placement. Been putting off reassembly for months because I know this IS an interference motor and I didn't want to bend valves. Again THANK YOU for the excellent how-to.

    i agree...Excellent video.
    Sorry if this is said already. I stopped reading after ~20 comments.
    3 comments...
    1) I noticed the idler sprocket was also different. The spacing between the gears was different and there seamed to be some other grooves between the main and secondary sprockets.
    2) using rubber bands will stretch to allow you to put the chain over the sprocket before cutting them. Just move them far enough out that they are not behind the big sprocket. Use pliers to grab them whine you cut with a knife or anything smart appropriate. Then it does bit fall into the oil pan.
    3) If you are doing this as part of a head gasket change the note that the head gasket kit does NOT come with the timing cover gasket (would be in a timing chain kit) so be sure to get that separate. Also on my 05 Ram (manufactured in 04), none of the offsets stores could find a timing cover gasket to match based on normal searches. One very smart person found the right gasket listed for the 03 model.

    10/10! Awesome video! Just bought a creampuff low mile no rust Dakota with a 3.7 for $800. Guy overheated it and now has no compression on #6, think it dropped a valve seat. If pistons and cylinders ore ok she's getting heads and this video will help me immensely! Thanks!

      Should have put a head on that thing. Borescope looked like piston was dicked so I threw a high miler mill out of a liberty in it. Took the head off and could have totally threw a head at the low mile block. Oh well it's still running with the used engine

    Good video... it’s always best to compare your parts but next time ... know the parts you need before ordering... your original is NGC and you bought a JTEC kit. It’s even stamped on the upper sprockets. Like you said if you use your old gears it will be OK but not knowing the correct parts needed when ordering is on you bro. Other than that... Nice Job 👍🏻!

    You and I have a jtec 16 tooth 3 plug ECU. NGC is the 32 tooth trigger 4 plug ECU. If it's a NGC cam trigger wheel will be stamped NGC on the wheel. You got the newer version cam wheel with the kit I believe. Nice job!

      I had to get eBay involved in a used motor purchase. Guy sold me a 32 tooth advertised as 16! Full refund and free motor for false advertising. Do your homework there are some trying to make fast bucks on eBay.

    well done. doing this myself on an 07. 07 and up is the same except they use roller cam chains. i didnt buy a cheap kit in ebay.got mopar guide and chain kit.and melling hyd tensioners didnt want to chance using ebay parts. hope yours is running good.

      also mines an 02 so as that year there was two different cpu. thats why i checked it. they sent me a cam sprocket for the jtec .

    21:16 I'd like to point out that with this "new" chain assembly notice how the tensioners are just about fully extended!. So what's to happen when the chains stretch a little. The tensioners become fully extended. And after a little more streatch, There's nothing left on the tensioner. I know there's a defect somewhere. Just haven't nailed it down yet.
    I also thought that maybe the springs were too stiff & caused premature stretching. All I know is 3 times for me on replacing timing on 4.7. My understanding is they quit making this motor? Any input would be appreciated.

    Passenger side lower guide still moves when I crank the engine. Have a whole timing set in there from cloyes and tried 2 different ones. Tensioner is at full lock and the guide is tight for some of the rotation and loose for the rest. Any ideas?

    Hi! What brand timing set/tensioners do you recommend? I've seen the Cloyes set for $265, which seems to be the gold standard... wondering if I can get away with a cheaper brand. Thanks

      Cloytes is good. I end up using Mizumo. I bought several brands and they looked all the same to me. But I didn't like any of the oil pumps. For that I used Millings oil pump. But if you can , generally go with oem. The off brands can be a hit or a miss. The Mizumo is holding up and it's been a while since I threw them on. I beat the crap out of it. Meaning I go full throttle a lot 😆 🤣

      Larry Kittell, lol my assistant was my 12 year old daughter! She did pretty good I thought.... But first i looked online to find the best deal and eBay had a lot of places ti get it from. Paid around $50 . local auto parts stores did not have it , not even Napa.

    Does the tensioner puts pressure on the guide as soon as you remove the release pin? Because when I remove the pic from the tensioner, it does nos reach the guides.

      There's something wrong. Tensioner is supposed apply tension onto the guilds and in turn keep the timing chains in place. The hydraulic tensioner has to be at fault here. I'm not there looking at it but I'm sure you can get the chains on right. So I'd start with the tensioner. Though they work with oil when motor is running. It should touch the guilds .     Do you have any idea what would cause repeated failure of a hydraulic chain tensioner in the 4.7? Iv'e had the whole timing kit replaced 3 times already in past 3 years. Oil pump was replaced too. Great video BTW.

      Hard to say. Use good oil and change often and use the recommended oil too. Make sure the oiling passage that's in the tensioner has a screen to block oil contamination. You already replaced oil pump so that can be ruled out unless you buy cheap brand, then that might be the issue. Be sure to soak in clean oil before assembling. Good luck

      I have had the same problem. I'm in the middle of #3 timing. That's why I'm here to see if I'm missing something.
      Twice secondary chain stretch. This time caught me by surprise, primary tensioner teflon/plastic dislocated, and guide to the right turned up missing.

    BEST VIDEO explaining the timing chain install!!! Thank my friend. I see you put the rocker arms after you torqued down your camshaft. I am having difficulty turning my cam after torquing the caps down, can this be because I put my rocker arms first? Or is it something with the valve spring? I'm at the end of my rope trying to fix this cam not turning easy problem.

      Driving at the moment. Give me time to get home. But I'll tell you this now, turn the crank and the will turn the cams. If you can't turn it that way then either caps are way over torque or timing is off and your valves are hitting the piston . Also caps go on in a certain way. They are numbered so make sure that they are in order

    I replace the timing kit, after I replaced it. Cylinder 6 was misfiring so did a pressure test and wasnt getting any psi. Replace with the original one and I got 90psi again. Now when the truck is at normal temperature, oil pressure gauge starts to fluctuate. So could it be the camshaft sprocket or idler sprocket. I have the original sprocket still in hand

      On the Pressure test, you may have a valve seal dropped or dropping. Assuming that the head gasket is good and no cracks in the head. Metal expands so maybe that be it. Then you gotta look at the rocker arm. Those things literally just sits in there under tension.
      So check the rocker arm 1st . If the rocker arm is there and feels lose during whole rotating of the engine, then you probably a dropping valve seat. Which sucks.
      On the oil pressure dropping, if you idle below 500 rpms, warning lights goes off. If you have good idle. Check you connection where the pickup tube is . If you high miles ..... your Engine bearings may be a problem. Worn bearing will cause low oil pressure. As always hook a an oil pressure gauge to see what's really going on .

      Water pumps are cheap and easy to do when it's open up. That's why everyone replace them. I did. I think you dont in some cases but seem like when you have a waterpump sitting out for a while, it starts to pit up and or corrode a little. Maybe if you're gonna used the same waterpump, keep it submerse and some water? But I'd replace it if I was you 😎

    I have a clicking tensioner. How long do you think I can drive it like that before something fully fails? I can’t afford to get it done right now. It runs fine, just clicks when it’s cold. Quiets down after warm up. Thanks. Very impressive video.

    Do you know if you have to set the cam chain tensioner or are they fine once you pull the pins out ?

      I set the cam before pulling the pins. Once the timing is set , pull pins and rotate engine to confirm that the timing is right. Pins are easy to push in if you gotta make an adjustment

      Richard Morris, i can't remember the exact brand atm I'll look and message back here... Was a knock off but honestly the head gasket was the exact same as felpro's set from my local auto parts store. I compared the sets too lol fearing the same as you.

    My ram sometimes makes a rattle sound when only cranking. Is it tensioner?

      Could also be the lifters. Usually when you hear noise during a start up, its because the oil gotta make around the the engine. If you have some miles on motor, its a good idea to add Lucas oil . Its sticky and coats the moving parts well. Start with that and if noise is still present, use the good ole metal rod trick to hear if its coming from the timing chain or valve train

      Sorry for the delay in response. Might be other problems if you're sure you got the timing right. Hard to say without actually looking at it myself. Could be your off a tooth on the gears, rocker arm fell off , bad gas, coil pak.... the list could go on . Hell even a dropped valve seat will make it back fire. So I would start there and eliminate the mechanical possibilities. Pull valve covers and spin the engine while examining the rockers are fully open and closing . If one rocker is not closing then you got a sticking valve or a dropped valve seat. If all checks out, check your ignition system, coils , plugs.

    I am about to undertake this job myself I am not gonna lie kind of nervous I don't have time to do the entire job start to finish nonstop may have to do it on weekends off. Will the old chains have the different color links still visible or is it advantageous just to buy new I was going to take it to a local shop to have it done but funds got diverted to other issues and not I'm stuck doing it myself so I'm going to need to reuse anything I can mainly fora head gasket leaking i'm guessing but have no compression in #7.

      It wasn't the cheapest one but if you check them out by comparing the two there may be no difference. There wasn't any difference on my 2 (new and used one) timing chains. Only difference was the chain guides and the difference there was just the coloring. I did get coyote gears and chains and I don't have any problems. I ride my ram hard too. Like it's just for fun and I hammer that thing every time. I've done more mods since this so I was able to check for any abnormal wear and tear and so for it looks great.
      Always check reviews and always compare parts. Some "cheap" parts are good . If they say that there are built to oem specs, then they should be good enough for normal life of part.

      But i can se that the chain is not tight to the sprocket, is that becurse you only replaced the chain and not the sprockets?

    Is there a way that I can talk to you on phone. Where does number 1 cylinder need to be. Just put new heads and gaskets and watched every video and it still not in time. I need help

      Sorry I can't give my number out. Hopefully you put it on tdc before taking apart. There's a mark on the timing cover where you line up with slotted line on the harmonic balancer. Then you don't rotate the engine anymore till you get the new timing components back on.
      If you got the heads on already, temporarily put the timing cover back on and seat the balancer on to where its straight, the line it up with tdc mark

    Where did you get your timing chain kit and gears from? and how much were they?

      rlarson3232, got them from ebay theres tons to chose from. My kit was 175 for oil pump, water pump and timing chain set which included everything, chains x3 gears, chain guides, chain tensioners . dont buy the cheapest or you may send it back. But theres tons of options for whatever budget you may have

      rlarson3232 , too bad i can't send screen shot lol 261265311133 that is the part number and its from car parts wiz. Its an American base company and totally happy with it. The first set i did end up returning because of those gears. I was gonna put my old ones bake in but i figured since im here and this far back into it then ill get everything new. Obviously it not mopar/Chrysler parts but i have no issues yet! I'll have a crank up video somewhere and soon ill put that up along with its 3000 mile running since the top end over haul. No smoke not burning oil either. Hopes this helps

      The manufacture refers to the left & right as of you are sitting in the cab. So drivers side is the left side of the engine.
      Well at least in the USA. Swap that if you live somewhere that drives on the wrong side of the road. 😄

      che Guevara its different in a few ways. But the process is the same. There is a balance shaft that only the V6 3.7 has and im not familiar with. So im sorry but i don't want to give you the wrong answer because i have not worked on the 3.7. Good luck

    The video makes no sense when it looks off to me. It looked good before you turned it... After that none of your chain links lined up you was only basing it on the idea that v8 was at the top.. but your colored links didn't line up any where which means you could easly be a tooth off and not no it. And you purchased the wrong kit for your engine. You need to check your Vin number next time there is different ones.

      james nunnya , thanks for replaying! But my truck is running great! No smoke or backfires getting 18 mpg as well. It might not looked aligned to you but take camera angles into consideration? LOL but it all lined up great and when i turn my motor , it didn't stop me from doing complete rotations. Its an interfering motor which means the valves would hit the pistons if it was not align , even if it waa just a tooth off. As for the vin, 8th digit determines what parts to order for your motor. Only difference between them is the cam sprocket , the cam sensor reads the cam sprocket to let the cpu know what to do. The holes did not line up so it would not work. Even though i know what i order , doesn't mean i got the right part. Always check your work and parts ! There's two type of motor for the 4.7 that year . jtec and nsg . im just showing how to make sure you got the right part. Hope this help. My RAM is running great, hopefully yours as well.

      Also the colored links are for lining up the gears only. Will line up again but you would have to spin the motor for a long time lol idk the mathematical equation but ive heard its in the 10,000's . im not spinning that many times . just make sure the v8 is up and the dots line up as well when your on TDC.

      +james nunnya Well of course they are not going to line up as soon as he turns the crank. I don't know how many revolutions it would take but at some point they would come back to the same alignment he started with.
