Martin, I want to thank you for the excellent video and instruction regarding what I initially thought was a very intimidating job for a non-professional. My son and I used your video (and one other about removing/installing cylinder heads) extensively to rebuild his Jeep Liberty 3.7 which had a dropped valve seat. Neither of us are mechanics but after watching your videos, we both said "we can do this!". And we did! After everything was put back together, we both held our breath as we turned the key to start it - and it fired right up. For anyone considering doing this job, just watch this video (over and over), follow the steps exactly, and you will be successful. In fact, setting the timing was the easiest and most enjoyable part of the job.
And what a great experience to share with our children boy or girl . I am sure he took away much patience knowledge and the reward of success . It will come in handy in the future I am sure and he will say thanks Dad 👍

I put a 4.7 from a 03 Durango into a 01 dakota and because of the timing difference between the two it wouldn't run so I sent it out to multiple mechanics to try to get it running and they all failed so the project got pushed aside now after doing research and ordering new parts its time to put new timing gears and chains and stuff on but ive never done the job before so thanks for making this awesome how to boosts my confidence alot.
@@matty2helpfull yes you can use the old one. you will need to pull the engine and disassemble the lower half of the engine to lift the crank out far enough to change it out. you may be better off finding an engine that had the NGC ECM and sell that engine.

Your video has been more helpful than anything that I have looked at to build my confidence to tear into my 2005 4.7 ram 1500 that has a sloppy loose passenger side timing chain that I found while changing lifters that I thought were causing all of the racket in there.
Usually I work with a Honda 1.7 old engine with one timing change you helped me a lot with my Jeep I miss the timing and chain I mean did Mark on the chain for the left side but other marks are good the engine rotates by hand with no problem don't think I'm good thank you for your help
Hi, Just wanted to say thank you for a couple of your videos. This one on replacing the timing chains and sprockets and the one on installing solid lifters. I had to tear the heads off my WK grand cherokee to replace some bent valves so I decided to change all the valves, the valve springs, seals and put solid lifters in. I also replaced the timing chain and sprockets along with the water pump and belt tensioner and new fuel injector connectors. Little bit of work but it runs great now. Thanks again.
No, after I installed HO cams the bolt on the drivers side cam came slightly loose, guess I should’ve put locktite on ie, and the timing went off just slightly and caused the 4 intake valves on the drivers side head to hit pistons and bend. The pistons were fine but not the valves. Alls good now. Painful lesson learned though.
@@jerrymcmanus9366 sorry to hear that, I would be surprised if the bolt actually came loose, what have seen is that you may have thought the cam gear was seated to the cam but in actuality, it is not, and then the cam gear slips and you end up with bent valves and the appears to have come to loose.
@@martinbuilt thats very possible. The pin or dowel was damaged too. I’d include de a pic but looks like RUclips doesn’t allow for that in this message area.
marten Ive worked on cars for 55 years.. Ive noticed that all these cars have plastic backed timing tensioners,,, Like you thoughts on removing the plastic and building back with brass and machining to specs. after watching you , you know what your doing.. thats rare these days. keep up the good work,,
I watched your video until I had it memorized because it was the most detailed and it went absolutely flawless. My only issue was the LH cam sprocket/gear from Cloyes was not marked "R - V8 - L" (only had "L") and it was missing the holes for the spanner tool. I wanted matching gears but I needed the motor fixed ASAP. So using the old gear as a template I drill holes in the new one so I had a place to attach the spanner tool to torque the cam shaft gear bolts. Hell of a way to cut corners by not drilling two holes and deleting three stamp impressions. Great info, thanks for your hard work putting this video out there. Updated 12/7/2022 -- I replaced timing chains and lifters hoping it would get rid of the famous 4.7 tick and it did for about 4 days but then came back - strange why 4 days then returned ? Updated 12/12/2022 -- Had an oil leak on passenger side valve cover . Didn't have new gasket fully seated at rear corner-- it rolled over and some how got cut. Took about a week for the oil to find the exhaust manifold. Replaced with new one and no leaks. Reply Reply

Nice video Martin. Nice clear shots on the video. I had a diagnosis of coolant in my oil in my 08 3.7. So I'm considering pulling off the head gaskets. While I have all that off I gathered I might as well go the extra step and do the timing chain as well so this was very helpful. Not to mention, I just remembered since I'm doing all that I might as well throw in a new set of lifters.;) thanks!
Hey @MrGoliat6288 I have the same truck and it just started having a knocking sound that seems loudest from underneath toward the back. But I could be mistaken. But the sound doesn’t go away once warmed up. And is pretty loud. Just curious if you had the same symptoms with truck before doing the timing job. Through research, it seems to me that if it were the lifters starting to go bad the sound goes away after a bit. Thanks for your time. Also Martin you’re the best. Very helpful.
Hey man, I love your videos!!! Was wondering if u could do more step by step videos on the Dakota.. like removing the engine/ transmission.. how to find A/C leaks.. How to change transmission fluid and differential fluid, spark plugs, alternator, etc .. also how to wire lightbar to Hibeam switch

I found out I'm also missing the guide pins. I Uninstalled first cause my buddy who was helping me broke a guide pin and some pieces fell at the bottom. Also I made my chain fall off from its spot. But yeah I'm glad I saw this video.
Nice video Martin you're the man! If you did go ahead and remove the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms, you would be able to spin the cam sprocket by hand and not have to mark up your cams to install the chains. Really made my life easier just taking them out. Take care and thanks for the video !
Hey my idler sprocket didn't have any "end play" after installing the idler sprocket bolt. Is that a bad sign? I use the original sprocket that came with my 2006 4.7 dakota, its stiff and i had to use sum force to get it on
I wish you had done this sooner😅 . I did one of these almost 6 years ago an I couldn't find hardly any info on it. Needless to say that motor never ran again. Great video though thanks
Sorry I wasn't there for you then. Yes this is something that you definitely don't want to mess up. Since this is an interference engine and valve damage can certainly happen if you get the timing wrong. Thank you for watching.

Excelente video, thanks so much, I have jeep liberty 2007 3.7, I am not expert in mechanic but likes works in cars. Your video helps a lot. From salt lake city utah usa
Hi Martin! Great video and thanks for doing that. There's just one more thing to watch out for on the "3.7" however. Behind the double gear assembly , there is a counter balance gear that must be properly lined up as the new gear and chain set is being pushed on.
I almost just stuck stuff together because it wasn't mentioned and I figured it wasn't important. IT IS. Prior to putting the chains on, look at the very back angled teeth for a dot. Use a grease pen to mark the tops of those 2 teeth since you won't be able to see it once the chains are on. Then when installing, put the dot on the counter balance gear in those teeth so when pushed in place, the dots will be lined up.
Glad I found your video, because I’ve seen two other guys that made job difficult, but you do it in a way that is easy to follow. Thank you so much.. I’m retired at 73 and was engine rebuilder back in my early years
Also..the passenger side has full compression and the driver side doesn't have full compression. The second spark plug on the driver side is where my mechanic is having the problem due to the compression test that he did earlier today as of Thursday. I hope this extra helps out so I can have my truck back Friday. He's had it for 2 weeks now. Thank you again
Is there agive away on the need for a new timing chain set? Noise at start up when cold? Is there a particular noise to listen for? How to tell if may actually be lifter noise. Is there a mileage at which it would be wise to replace. If you include these diagnostics in your videos I believe they would be as helpful to your audience as the repair procedures. Thanks, good job!!!!
Look I got 2004 jeep grand Cherokee 4.7 just rework the heads and new timing chain got back together starts fine runs really good but when you try to give gas it's blows the injector fuse I didn't put new injectors in but I did clean them
Martin, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty 3.7 and it has a 4th gear on the back of the neutral gear. It also has a smaller gear bolted to the front of the motor that the forth gear has to align with. Why don't you explain or show why the difference between a 3.7 and a 4.7. Can I remove these gears ? What are their purpose?
Hi Martin, I'm using your spring compression tool to get valve seals on. Took the cams out to do it. Think the slop in the timing chain allowed 1 side to skip a tooth down low at the crankshaft. @4:20 you show how to get TDC, then the cam sprocket will have the V8 up, R to right, L to left.. Ensure that config on both sides and I'll be good to install cams? The key will ensure they only can attach to sprockets 1 way I think...
On the driver side cam sprocket, the lower guide is blocked by a freeze plug. The video you show already has it out and you can access the bolt to that guide. How do you remove that freeze plug
Hey so issue im having. IN THE KITS they suoply the new front sprocket for the idler (the main big sprocket) but you didnt show how to disassemble the old sprocket from the gears on the backside to install the new one from the kit and which way it needed to be aligned when installed onto the shaft with the other gears to be ready to be installed/mounted back onto the engine afterwards. *Plz help*

When I take my valve covers off and put my crankshaft to TDC… only one of my Cams line up with “R,L and V-8 on top”… how do I get both of the cams to match??
I just confirmed I am in compression stroke cylinder 1…. Cams still don’t both point to 12 o’clock… is it possible to rotate the drivers side cam independently so I can match it with the passenger side
@@martinbuilt the chain keeps slipping off drivers side camshaft sprocket when turning engine by hand… now I have both cams showing “V8” at 12oclock. However the chain on drivers camshaft wasn’t moving
If you have a Cereal box, cut the cardboard & you can slide it through the windows. (2) & that sufficiently holds the chains to the sprockets. You may have to double & tripple them up to make them thick enough to apply adequete pressure against the chains. In a pinch, I rounded up some thin pieces of wood with a wedge of wood to tighten them up. Once installed on the motor, just pull out your shims. JUST MAKE SURE your chain links are in the correct position before you wedge em in place.

Thank you, you will also need to replace the 32 teeth to a 16 TEETH CRANKSHAFT RELUCTOR WHEEL
@@martinbuilt that should be a part that doesn't get worn out right? Can I just swap from the old motor to the new? Or should I look for a new one
@@matty2helpfull yes you can use the old one. you will need to pull the engine and disassemble the lower half of the engine to lift the crank out far enough to change it out. you may be better off finding an engine that had the NGC ECM and sell that engine.
@@martinbuilt I need to pull the engine again anyway to pull change the wire harness again so I will probably just continue with this one but I'll keep that in mind thank you for all your useful info 😊
first class work Martin,an excellent job.im very pleased for you.
Your video has been more helpful than anything that I have looked at to build my confidence to tear into my 2005 4.7 ram 1500 that has a sloppy loose passenger side timing chain that I found while changing lifters that I thought were causing all of the racket in there.
Thank you, That could be most likely caused by a hydraulic self adjuster failure or maybe worn out guides
Excellent Martin, man!
Glad you found my videos helpful. Did you have a timing chain failure that caused the bent valve?

"I made a tool for that"... wow
marten Ive worked on cars for 55 years.. Ive noticed that all these cars have plastic backed timing tensioners,,, Like you thoughts on removing the plastic and building back with brass and machining to specs. after watching you , you know what your doing.. thats rare these days. keep up the good work,,
The best information on this timing chain on RUclips! THANKS
Thank you Travis, I appreciate that.
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Thanks Martin..the most I watch your videos the better I do in mecanic..You explain every Detail..
Blessings!!
Glad to hear it, thank you.
Replaced with new one and no leaks.

wondering how that worked for you!
@@andybilakshow260 It worked great, with no after affects
Hi Martin,I completely idolize you! Your instructions are so clear! Thank you so much, brother!!!
Wow, I really appreciate that I'm glad you like the content and find it helpful. Thank you for watching.
Keep the videos coming for 3.7L engines. Thank you.
Best video I found on a 3.7 very very good explaining everything ... the video was like a 1 on 1 person teaching me thanks alot sr keep up the good work
Wow, thanks!
@@martinbuilt how do you use the tool to get passenger sprocket on and off with the rivets in the 2 holes? I've a 3.7
Nice video! Now I just wish you'd come on over here and do it for me. Lol my tensioner just went in my 04 Cherokee. It's middle of winter and I live in an apartment building. Just ordered all the parts and now I'm going to be watching all your videos repeatedly till they come in. Thanks for the very well explained videos. You're a life saver.
Yeah, I grew up in Iowa, hated working on vehicles in the winter.
This video is going to help me very mucch I am freaking out with three chain configurations
I have a 2.7, this video was the best at explaining the essentials of timing. It is a good guide, I hope I can find one this good for my engine.
Thank you, Ronnie, I appreciate that, good luck.
Any ideas on why the cover will not come off?. All bolts and pulleys removed .
@@Ronnie-zn9sx are you sure you got them all? Did you remove the belt tensioner, there is a bolt hiding behind that, and the large bolt at the very top of the cover 17mm deep socket?
@@martinbuilt i found the infamous missing bolt, just where you said it was. I had to find it before i went to bed or i wouldn't sleep. Keep you updated.
@@Ronnie-zn9sx glad you found it, now comes the fun part
Nice video Martin. Nice clear shots on the video. I had a diagnosis of coolant in my oil in my 08 3.7. So I'm considering pulling off the head gaskets. While I have all that off I gathered I might as well go the extra step and do the timing chain as well so this was very helpful. Not to mention, I just remembered since I'm doing all that I might as well throw in a new set of lifters.;) thanks!
Thank you I appreciate that. Glad you liked it and found it helpful.
good luck with with your engine hope everything turns out well.
Best How-to video I ever saw. Thank you!
Thank you I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful thank you for watching 😁
Martin you’re the man. Thanks for the videos. Just finished a timing chain on 05 Ram 1500.
Thank you, glad I could help!
I'm liking these little 8 engines more and more.
Glad to hear that
Never seen the zip tie technique before - great idea
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
I know exactly what the "YEAH!!" feels like! Very, very nicely done! Way to go!!!

Hey man, I love your videos!!! Was wondering if u could do more step by step videos on the Dakota.. like removing the engine/ transmission.. how to find A/C leaks.. How to change transmission fluid and differential fluid, spark plugs, alternator, etc .. also how to wire lightbar to Hibeam switch
awesome video I have never attempted this but after watching this video i can do this. very methodical, informative on bolt sizes and what steps to follow camera coverage view well done so you are able to see the whole area where you are working. your verbal skills teaching are great. thanks
Thank you Paul.
I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Glad you found it helpful
@@martinbuilt sure did its nice to see the job clearly explained the zip tie trick made it so easy thanks again!
Glad someone finally made a great video. Thanks for informative job
Thank you . I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
@@martinbuilt I've been looking for head bolt torque specs. I have seen 4 different videos and all 4 tell different specs.
Hey my idler sprocket didn't have any "end play" after installing the idler sprocket bolt. Is that a bad sign? I use the original sprocket that came with my 2006 4.7 dakota, its stiff and i had to use sum force to get it on
Thank you for providing that information and how to do the timing chain
You are very welcome. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful thank you for watching.
Amazing video!! My 2004 WJ 4.7 V8 has 152k miles and wondering when I'm gonna need to do this job?? But with this video, I'm confident of 'doing' the job... Thanks

I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
I have a spiral gear behind that main sprockets. To I line that top dot of the main to the spiral one
Super super super video! Thanks Martin from the UK!!!
Hi Martin! Great video and thanks for doing that. There's just one more thing to watch out for on the "3.7" however. Behind the double gear assembly , there is a counter balance gear that must be properly lined up as the new gear and chain set is being pushed on.
Yep, that's right ✅👍
Yes and now here I am stuck unsure how to time that small gear..
I’m retired at 73 and was engine rebuilder back in my early years
man outstanding video excellent camera work and explanation
Thank you Esten I appreciate that glad you enjoyed it.
thanks for tips made my job a whole lot easier. ive been a mechanic for 20yrs and thanks to people like u i learn a lil more everyday👍🏿
Thank you Fred glad I could help.
if you don't mind marring up the cam shaft, you can use pliers instead of the cam gear tool to get the cam bolts off.
Or use an impact
GREAT JOB BRO....IM GOING TO DO MY 3.7 JEEP SOON JUST NEEDED SOME INSTENTIVE...MOPAR FOR EVER...!
Thank you, the 3.7 has a added balance shaft to deal with.
I appreciate you for this video Mr. Martin!

Best Video on RUclips...
Thanks for the video, this helped me out a whole lot. What’s the best way to clean up the timing and valve cover surfaces?
Also..the passenger side has full compression and the driver side doesn't have full compression. The second spark plug on the driver side is where my mechanic is having the problem due to the compression test that he did earlier today as of Thursday. I hope this extra helps out so I can have my truck back Friday. He's had it for 2 weeks now. Thank you again
Where there any noises whatsoever coming from the motor before before the timing guide rebuild?
No noises whatsoever but if you have a bad Hydraulic tensioner the noises are common.
For the cam shaft holder, maybe a very small strap wrench? I haven't looked for one, but that seems like a possible solution.
Yes that would work as well.
Thank You Sir for quite detailed tutorial. Huge help!
You are very welcome. I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
If I had a 3.7 to show you I would have. Those are balance gears, the V8's don't need them because of the added two added cylinders.
I'd like to get one of them tools you used to brake the cam bolts loses
Vise grips on the cam (shaft) "NOT the lobes" works for me
Nicely done. What is the part number of the gasket kit you used in this video?
Thank you, Fel-Pro TCS46000 Timing Cover Gasket Set amzn.to/2NG8e0g
On the driver side cam sprocket, the lower guide is blocked by a freeze plug. The video you show already has it out and you can access the bolt to that guide. How do you remove that freeze plug
It pulls out, or push it from the back.
*Plz help*
great instructional video
Thank you I really appreciate that I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
How are you today how do you prelubed 4.7 befor starters
I was attempting to replace a thermostat and the lower bolt to the housing broke off in there. So now I figure I will take that front plate off so I can see what I am doing better. However, I don't know what I am gonna be able to do to get the rest of that bolt out. Its a 02 durango 4.7
This video here I'll show you how to remove the front timing cover.

When I take my valve covers off and put my crankshaft to TDC… only one of my Cams line up with “R,L and V-8 on top”… how do I get both of the cams to match??
Are you sure you're on the compression stroke of the number one cylinder
@@martinbuilt simply put, No… I’m not 100% sure I am. How can I confirm I’m in compression stroke cylinder #1
@@martinbuilt should I just continue turning the engine by hand until they line up?? I don’t want to risk any damage to the valves
I couldn’t find the cam holder you used on Amazon it looks different
Yeah the one that I used I made myself.
