Just failed an inspection for this. They want $350 for labor and parts. You have explained how easy it is to replace. I will be saving for sure. Thank you!
My respects for the simplicity of the explanations. So much information delivered in a efficient and comprehensive way! Ever thougt about putting all this together in a mechanics course? I'd buy it for an affordable price.
I know nothing about cars. I have at best changed front disc brakes. Somehow you made this incredibly straight forwards and understandable even though it sounded like crazy jargon to me. That's a great achievement in a tutorial video like this.
I replaced many struts on many cars for friends and family. I refuse to mess with springson struts, I buy the whole assembly ready to go. Faster, easier, and most likely need both replaced.
Nice! Been in there many times throughout the years due to the crappy roads I drive on. Concerning the front struts, life becomes so much easier if you start off by just loosening the upper nut even before jacking up the car, otherwise the strut shaft will just spin and it's a hassle to get a grip on it with the tension already released.
I bought 2 complete strut assembly and both was same side can i change the shock on the passenger side and keep the coil and strut mount, bearing, rubber..? Toyota camry 2011 hybrid?
Just replaced the front struts on my car a few weeks back, was a painful job.. mostly trying to get the bottom of the shock out of the pinch bolt seating. Rides awesome now though, worth the pain.
@speedkar99 My 2012 Ford Fusion's Front Coil Springs are both Broken. I have no idea how or when they Broke!? I always drive very carefully and never go fast through pot holes or train tracks. It only has 90k on it. Neither Coil or Strut is even rusty at all. Both just clean breaks...
I wish every one put wrench flats on their stabilizer links instead of that hex that strips out almost every time. Not too much rust here in Honolulu but some are super tight that I stripped out.
What if you bought a car from a dealer with aftermarket lowering springs and don't know the exact make and model springs that are on the car? If you replace the back ones with OEM springs, the back will sit higher than the front, and if you replace the front ones, the front will sit higher than the back. Does that mean you have to replace all 4 springs with OEM ones?
Great Video! I had a question, My 2010 Mercedes CLS 219 had both its rear coil springs replaced recently as they were fractured. Following replacement, the rear ride height seems to be a few centimetres more than it was previously. Is this normal? In time, will the rear ride height go back to how it was on the old springs that were replaced? Many thanks in advance.
You got lucky with you gun on the knuckle bolts...they burned my Canadian tire gun! Wondering why you didn't go quick strut route, makes life easier, and cheaper
Hey guys at the comments, I need some help please, I have a 02 Yukon and it has rough ride at the rear socks are busted but my question is should I change the coils too or just changing the shocks will do, I hope I hear from someone Thanks, great video by the way
any reason to use an impact wrench as opposed to breaker bar +/- pipe to loosen that stabilizer link nut? also, is it necessary to put the spring compressors on prior to removing top mount? isn’t the spring secured by the by top and bottom seats?
I had sj410, we discussed to have it convereted to coil in rear but so much cutting n welding was involved. I sold it for fj70 which is relatively easy on bones :)
One of the front coil springs on my Ford Fiesta broke too and I've found this video hugely informative. I have removed the offending strut but I am finding that the very top nut (that you point to at 07:09) is just spinning and spinning. Sadly, I don't have an impact wrench to 'shock' it out; any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I now realise that the piston rod nut was spinning with the piston rod itself and that you need to use a hex bit to counteract this spinning. Mine strut was so gunked up I couldn’t see this at first!
The front coils there have several coils, mine only had 2 and had to be clamped in certain position, otherwise they would foul the top mount. Nightmare job, took hours. Easier with power tool.
You, also, forgot to torque the top center nut on the strut to the proper torque spec! It MUST be torqued to the correct spec, or your strut will be either too loose, or too bumpy!
Tell your wife you can only replace these parts once and the noises she hears are there to remind her of this. If she hits another pothole, you'll need to scrap the car. See how she drives...
Here's a tip, if you live in an area where they salt the roads, buy all your cars new and plan on exchanging them for a newer model every 4 to 5 years. Just look at the corrosion on the under side of this car. If you must buy a used car go to California or Florida and get it there.
Depends on the car really. Cars made with such climates in mind usually have beefed up corrosion protection (like volvos for example). Also cold climate spec cars usually have smaller radiators, so that's something to watch out for.

"Torque spec is really tight..."
😆😆
That was great- good talk and explaining without a load of waffling
Dude's honest forgot the spring isolator and got a clanking sound. Most of the time my DIY projects end with some mysterious leftover pieces.
I bought 2 complete strut assembly and both was same side can i change the shock on the passenger side and keep the coil and strut mount, bearing, rubber..? Toyota camry 2011 hybrid?
Does the spring need to seat "properly" against the rubber things, or will it over time butt up against the notches in the rubber pad?
Just replaced the front struts on my car a few weeks back, was a painful job.. mostly trying to get the bottom of the shock out of the pinch bolt seating.
Rides awesome now though, worth the pain.
Those bolts can be tough. My car rides good now too but I think it'll need struts soon
speedkar99 it did appear you might need a pair of them too ☺️
Incredible how much rust occurs on vehicles where you are there 😳
Is the torsion bar system connected to the rear knuckle of the wheel or is it one whole connected set of parts?
@speedkar99 My 2012 Ford Fusion's Front Coil Springs are both Broken. I have no idea how or when they Broke!? I always drive very carefully and never go fast through pot holes or train tracks. It only has 90k on it. Neither Coil or Strut is even rusty at all. Both just clean breaks...
After a while metal will fracture. Breaking coil springs are normal.
I wish every one put wrench flats on their stabilizer links instead of that hex that strips out almost every time. Not too much rust here in Honolulu but some are super tight that I stripped out.
Yeah, the sad thing is the links I took off we're only a year old and I did put antiseize!
@@speedkar99 WOW! That's some mean rust.

Hi, is it possible to lift up the car just by changing longer coil springs?
Amazing, but why you don't change the shock absorber for both cars?
Yes you can while you are in there. I changed the shock on the van after since I did not know it was blown until I opened it
The center nut that holds the mount in place, is there a set torque? Tighten till it stops?
Of course there's always a torque spec on these important components. It's not that high though, 36 ft lbs for my gen 2 camry.
The book has a torque for it. I just gunned it on haha

Just had this happen on my Caprice today...33 years old, surprised it held on this long.
Excellent step by step explanations. Thank you!
Great video! But I feel like the ride height for that camry is a little bit too high?
I have the same van same issue, since it’s only a tiny section has broke off, is it really necessary to replace?
Yeah you should
Sally use a quick strut! Saves u so much time and energy!!
In my experience Mevotech suspension parts never fit quite right.

Omg I've never seen a spring snap before but I have seen them shoot through hoods of lowriders
I've never seen a spring snap either, and then suddenly the sienna and Camry snap at the same time 🤣
@@speedkar99 I had snapped springs on my both cars - citroen and merc. Rust was the culprit.
@@speedkar99 just yesterday my spring broke off, and made the tire explode, was fun times.
There was very little rebound on that suspension strut, it should have been replaced.
Are you replacing with a different spring not meant for the camry instead of using similar to the original parts.Possible for many cars?
Been there done that.... mine took much longer doing the job.
Very Educational video... Thanks for posting it.

Aw, man! Those sj410 are getting rare. I've had my '86 Samurai tintop for 19 years now and will *never* let it go!

This is a great video, but it won't be a one person job. I just did one couple weeks ago. That damn stabilizer bar was a nightmare.

Do you need wheel alignment after replacing this spring?
