Gerber Shower Cartridge Replacement

  • This Gerber shower cartridge replacement video is not a step-by-step tutorial, rather a short look into my everyday activities. Not too many Gerber shower body's in my service area so I ordered the O.E.M. parts.
    What looked like a cut and dry cartridge swap, turned into a nail biter because I could not back out the screw holding the handle onto the cartridge. When I finally did remove it, the handle wouldn't come off.
    After some gentle persuasion, I managed to remove it. The moral to the story, have some extra screws and maybe an extra handle if you're going to attempt a Gerber shower cartridge replacement. Thanks once again for stopping by, hope you enjoy the video!
    Regards & Happy Plumbing!
    Bob.

    Gerber is very low end plumbing product, throughout the years change out so many three valve showerbody, and two handle faucets to better quality brand.

    Please post how to remove the handle. How to determine if there are leaks due to pipe cracks inside the wall?

    I remember back about 25 years (+,-,? I was still self employed) Gerber had a marketing campaign aimed at industry professionals, the hook being they only dealt with suppliers and contractors, never big-box stores. I liked this idea so I tried to use their products whenever I could. Always found them to be well made. Lacking in style somewhat, but generally a good product. I dont know if that strategy ever paid off for them. If you rarely see Gerber products in the field now, Im guessing no. Anyway, enjoyed the video as always

      Always used their kitchen faucets and center set faucets back in the day. Solid brass build, but as you said lacking style.

    I'm at the stage of removing the cap nut. In the video it looks like it slides directly onto the control stem of the cartridge. Did you just pull straight back or unscrew it? Also, at what point does the water need to be shut off? Thanks for the video and tips!

      The chrome sleeve slides off, but the brass cap nut must be unscrewed. Grab the two flats with a crescent wrench or Channel lock pliers

    Hello, Bob! Great Video and you are a fantastic host. You speak well and articulate very clearly. You were right about the crew, I managed to get it out, but I have a problem with the handle. I cannot pull it out. Do I have to twist it clockwise? How did you do it?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  Год назад +1

      No, it's just fused on, maybe some penetrating spray, handle puller? If not try to loosen the collar that holds the cartridge in and back it off, forcing the handle off?

      That would be great Bob! We DIY guys don't do this every day so to have a step-by-step video saved would be very helpful. I changed my cartridge couple of times and my biggest problem was getting it back in correctly.

    I have an exact problem. The plumber was unable to remove the handle. Where have you sourced Gerber parts? Thank you so much.

    Wouldn't there now be mold growing now between the walls due to the water dripping in between the walls?

    Also this cartridge works backwards of my original 🤦🏼‍♂️

      Check out this link - bit.ly/3YFCcE9. All things equal if you used a brand new O.E.M. cartridge, no reason for it being backwards.

    How long will the grease last on the rubber parts?

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  Год назад

      Genuine stem grease has a long life, however may dissipate more on the hot side.
