I told him I’d get a second opinion…it took me 15 minutes and 80.00 bucks at the Home depot to fix it after watching this video! And no more leaks!!! Thanks and may God bless you!❤️

I really appreciated this video. There are many videos about how to replace the cartridge, but this is the only one that answered all of my questions as a 78-year old widow with no plumbing experience. The most important thing was putting in the cartridge and not trying to force the little triangular tabs into place, but rather hand tightening the bonnet to do the job. Shower no longer drips! Thank you!
Thanks for the video. The job is a lot easier than it seemed at first. Thankfully this fixed my slow leak, no more mold strips in the bottom of my shower!
Great video, pretty easy fix. The first step you need to do is call Delta and talk to customer service. Delta has a lifetime warranty on all faucets. They will send you the replacement cartridge for free, a$60-$75 value. Just talked with them today while dealing with a leaky shower that was installed 24 years ago. Was on the phone for 5 minutes and they are shipping me a new cartridge today!
Great to know. I know they have a lifetime warranty against any manufacturing defects and I totally don't expect a company to warranty rubber seals for a lifetime. Very good of them to go above and beyond for sure. Thanks for sharing!

This video was incredibly helpful. I was convinced I had the wrong cartridge because it would not go in. Once I applied the plumbers grease and wiggled it with pressure it went in. Also, great info on the bonnet nut being hand tightened. The one I took off was tightened with a wrench. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this, especially the part number. My Delta is a late 90’s vintage and 19804 fit even though the package said 2006 or later. I only had to shut the water off for about 4 minutes. Much appreciated.
This is for anyone that runs into the kind of problems I did. Cartridge WOULD NOT come out. Finally the flange around the the ports that hold the seals & springs broke away and the stem assembly came out. Clamped onto the ports with needle nose vise grips. After much effort the port assembly came out far enough I could grab it with channel locks from the side. Never did see what was holding it. Luckily there was no significant damage to the valve body and none to the connecting plumbing, so a new cartridge solved the problem. Hopefully, I'm the only one that experiences this. Thanks to Thrifty Tool Shed for showing me what I was dealing with.
Mine also the part holding the seat and spring left behind on the faucet. Can I wiggle up and down so that it comes out easily or use a set of pliers to pull out the part separated from the front part of the cartridge?

4:40 When putting the chrome sleeve back on it pushes out the rubber O ring and pushes it back into the valve. How can I keep it in place in the groove? Can't seem to get it back on with the O ring. I took it off.
It is possible the o-ring is stretched because it should be fitting in the groove and staying in the groove. Some plumbers grease or super lube may help, but o ring may have to be replaced if it was stretched when removed.
Thank you immensely for posting this how to video. I struggled a lot with replacing my shower cartridge but this video kept me from quitting and calling a plumber on the weekend. This video absolutely made a positive difference in how I would have approached this project. Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi - followed all the steps to this, but when I turned the water main back on, the shower turned on and would not turn back off no matter how I turned the valve. Any thoughts?
I have never seen this, but it would have to be an o-ring or seat issue. The springs press he seat against the plate when the cartridge twist together. Possibly a bad cartridge or did it twist and come apart somehow?
This was so helpful! Never changed one out before, and it went perfectly! Only thing I done different was to use a rubber pipe wrench when removing the brass nut. No scratches.
Thanks to this straightforward video, I successfully did this, all went perfectly, it seated as expected and my tub spout STILL drips rapidly, no change at all! I had cleaned the housing really well and reached in and not feel any grit or sharp edges. What else could be wrong??
You have already checked the one thing that can easily cause it, the sharp edges or debris cutting the o-ring. The only other thing besides a bad cartridge would be if the cartridge had twisted apart and maybe one of the orings did not seat back correctly?
@@ThriftyToolShed Thank you! You know what it ended up being? The springs inside the cartridge had to be stretched a bit (1/8") for the seats to create a better seal. Worked like a charm.
Well! Typically, yes, but just to share: Many comments have been about some viewers having issues pulling theirs out and it coming out on pieces. I have not seen this, but apparently, in hard water such as well water, sometimes these are more of a pain to remove. I'm not trying to scare you, but I would, at a minimum, make sure a local hardware store has these in stock before attempting to pull it. My local Lowes does carry these! So I could have gone a few miles and picked one up if needed.
@ThriftyToolShed yes that is very true I will make sure I check to see if they have them both in stocks first. Luckily I don't have hard water here so I am hoping it comes out easily. I'll post my experience once I get to it. Thank you for the reply.
Help accidently unassembled bottom housing of cartridge valve. Not sure how to put it back the right way? I kept trying to assemble it back together but water won't come on.
Just now seeing this for some reason. I know the back of the cartridge twist 90⁰ and pulls apart so to reassemble make sure the seats are still in place and press back in 90⁰ and press together and twist until straight....
I have this exact same faucet but the blue part is stuck in the inlets only the white part of the valve comes loose where I can see the seats for the hot and cold
Sounds like the valve body split at the joint. You may have to carefully pry the flange of the residual piece out. Be careful not to damage the brass threads.
@@ThriftyToolShed got it done by feeding a piece of wire behind it and pulling it out. Installed the new one now I can't figure out why it will not shut off it runs wide open no matter where I turn valve
Glad you got it out. Make sure the o-rings are still in good shape and not cut or rolled up. Also double check the seat area inside the valve body is free of debris and burs etc. that is all I have ever seen other than the internally being bad.
@@ThriftyToolShed yeah I even pulled it back out and change the o-rings reinstalled it.. and it just runs like the valve is wide open I can't close it it doesn't slow down anyway you turn it. So I'm on my way to plumbing supply to return this valve and see if I can get a different valve. I just don't understand what would make it run wide open?
@@full-light As long as the shaft is turning it should absolutely be shutting off or at least changing flow. Strange unless the valve has internal issues.
I have a question, If I can not turn the water off to the house, Can I still change the piece since changing the cartridge does not take more than a minute to change. Please can someone let me know if this can be done. I am asking because I brung someone to turn the water off but they are saying it is very rusty and they dont dare turn it off and cause a flood🙄So I have the cartridge and I removed everything and only thing stoping me is this issue with turning the water off to the house.
You absolutely have to turn water off to the shower. If you can isolate directly that's fine. If not then you will have to turn off entire house supply. Remember cold and hot water is coming to that valve so you MUST turn OFF all water to the valve. Verify by making sure no water will come out of valve Hot or Cold before trying to remove the cartridge.
@@ThriftyToolShed Thank you SO much, I took everything off the shower part and I dont see where I can atleast turn the shower water off like I have seen videos of others doing it. I am so stressed with this situation and half the people that have came to look at it dont know where you turn the water off to the whole house. It sucks cause it’s the hot water leaking out the spout. Does every shower have a place where you can turn the water off the shower or are there showers where you cant? I have seen videos of people turning their shower water off but I dont see it when I remove everything. Im so upset and frustrated
@pennygirl99 From my experience very few will actually have a way to turn off at the shower. My house included. Mine had a whole house cut off at the road where the county water comes in. Some houses may have a cut off valve under the house where the water line comes in. My house is a slab house and I have no other valve. I had to turn mine off at the road.
@@ThriftyToolShed Wow, Makes sense as to why Im not able to shut it off at the shower. I am so frustrated and Im wondering why if it’s a one minute job replacing the cartridge why the water from the whole house has to go off lol. Im a woman so dont mind my dumb question but I am just curious cause the job is so quick lol
It is usually a really easy and quick job. Turing the water off is often the hard part. If it's something you have not ever had to do at your residence, then that is an added headache for sure. It's unfortunately a bridge that will need crossing for one reason or another. I had to turn mine off at the road recently because a toilet tank valve went bad. I turned off the shut-off valve at the toilet. But it would not turn completely off and kept leaking on the floor, and I had to run and turn off the main shut-off at the road. All that just to say, it's always good to know ahead of time where the valve is and quickly turn it off, so at least your efforts will not be in vain. Best of luck to ya!
Will all of the newer trim kits for the Monitor 14 series fit these older style 14 cartridges (19804)? I've got a home built in '99 and I'd like to change the trim pieces out but keep everything the same behind the wall. The way the handle attaches seems similar, just wondering if the slightly longer vs shorter cartridge will give me issues.
Some of the "imitation" cartridges have an allen screw going thru the shaft that the handle attaches to...does that really serve a purpose? I really want a very hot bath at times.
I have not seen the ones with the Allen screw in the shaft. I don't know what purpose it would have in the shaft really. The temperature adjustment is usually a physical rotation stop.
@@ThriftyToolShed You are correct. I asked a fellow at Home Depot and he thought it was a rotational stop. I experimented and it is not; left it off. I ended up using the Danco replacement cartridge(10347) I had on hand and it's stopped my leak but it seems the flow-rate is a bit reduced...no big deal. But to truly fix the actual Delta cartridge, do I need to replace ALL the round washers(1-big, 2-small) and the seats and springs? I don't see the washers on Amazon. I went to my nearest stop(Ace Hdwe) and they didn't really have anything that looked close other than the seats/springs. Is there a kit somewhere that contains everything? Thanks, mate.
They can be hard to find, and the price is not much lower than a cheap cartridge that comes with all of it honestly. This is an example of one similar. I have not used them to say for sure. amzn.to/3ZndjjA
Thank you for this, I just realized I forgot to replace the big o-ring that keeps the metal cartridge cover from spinning. Is that bad, will that cause a leak of some kind ? Thank you.
BTW I was assuming you meant you left it out. If you simply forgot to change it to the new one, at least, it should seal with the old one. But it could pose a problem with premature failure of the seal and leak.
Enjoyed your video ! 👌Need help from an expert . Question : Since I do not have a hot water valve cut-off , what is the best way to turn hot water off when I am replacing the cartridge ? Or the steps to take to turn water off and then back on after the replacement ? Thank you so much ! 🙏
Well the best way is to isolate the hot water from the water heater. If not possible then by cutting off the main water as I showed in the video. After isolating the whole house and then of course draining as mentioned. I did in the tub under my shower and left that valve open to double check to line pressure. The one thing to always make sure is that the water heater does not drain and try to heat up. It can destroy a water heater to leave it operating and not have water inside. I made sure not to drain the tank, but stop the water going into it so no water can push out. Hope it helps!
Thank you ! That makes sense ! Understand now. You know , I really like just a simple hot water line cutoff. If I had a house built , I would have hot & cold cutoff on the shower. So much easier for sure. Doesn't make sense when you have hot water cutoff under your sink ! Thank you 🙏
Is there any real function difference between the two valves? Im replacing an pre 2007 delta shower hardware with a newer model. The new one came with the longer stems so I bought the older one (blue) that fit the valve already installed. I test fitted the newer handle and it all seems to work fine but was unable to test hot water due to not having the shower wet in yet. I had no was to run it long enough.
I just installed a new shower insert with the Danko trim kit and also the 13 1400 cartridge but my water will not turn off. It's like my shut-off is in even doing anyting. any suggestions? Thx
Make sure the handle is really turning the cartridge stem for one thing. With the handle off can you rotate the cartridge stem with a tool and shut it off? (careful not to round it off) and also make sure the cartridge is seated all the way in.
I have not heard one do that myself that only started after a cartridge swap. I have seen too high of water pressure to the house cause humming or whining, but strange that it is only one valve doing it. I guess some debris could have possibly gotten into the shower head and causing the sound, maybe. Just a thought.
After the handle was unscrewed and taken off, mine has a small disc that pops off. The one in this video does not. Does anyone know what that small disc might be for?
@@ThriftyToolShed I apprecaite you getting back to me. Thanks for that. The model you linked is the exact one I ordered. There is also a notched, rotatable temperature adjuster (?) that is behind the screw that uses an allen wrench. The front disc also has to do with temperature ?
If only you had mentioned the correct orientation of the springs during the step by step instructions and not afterwards, as a matter of fact. I think this video would be perfect. Well, I'm off to try this again lol
Should this be replaced if it's not leaking? Mine is 17 years old and it's ok but was thinking should I replace it before it breaks (preventive maintenance)? Thank you for the video.
I would think it depends much on the amount of use and water quality also. I have some over 20 years old with no problems. I typically see the o rings get hard and start dripping, so it usually let's you know when it's time, but I can't say it won't fail completely at any time. It's the roll of the dice as usual to me. Odds are that one day it will start dripping so I personally wait until then to take action. I like your thinking ahead approach though!
Best Way to Remove the cartridge is to put the handle back on and set and then pull it out with Handle. How do you tell the Hot side from the Cold side on the new cartridge?
@@ThriftyToolShed Finely found the H it was so faint it look like molding lines, even then it I felt like my eyes were playing tricks on me and I was wishfully guessing.
Yes, it should be one of the first things mentioned in the video. If you do not have a local shut off valve then the main water valve will have to be cut off.
So it's leaking as in drips from shower head? Not around the valve itself? By replacing it twice, is that with aftermarket or actual Delta? I have had luck with my aftermarket valve, but i don't know if all are equal in quality! Lastly, is it the correct valve as far as the length as I mentioned in the video it's two different length cartridges....
@ThriftyToolShed it's leaking from the spout. I will try the longer grey type I've replaced it twice with the blue one. It very well may be the grey one that I need ...and yes always only Delta. Thank u
@@ThriftyToolShed I didn't have it but for now on I'll definitely keep all parts until I know it's good. It didn't leak after the new blue part for few days and I thought I was in the clear. I'll keep u posted on the outcome. It may be the grey one
Getting ready to do this…but I’m considering upgrading/changing shower hardware…so does this mean I need to change cartridge to match whatever new hardware I get? Or if I stick with delta will I be good?
If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if this cartridge is the same as the newer model hardware. The new model has a different cartridge. This video should have touched on the differences briefly. Of course different brands will also have a different cartridge.
@@ThriftyToolShed I guess to clarify …if I get new hardware …will my existing valve work with the new hardware? Or would i need a whole new valve. Is the valve universal for all single handle hardware sets. I know I’d need a cartridge to match the hardware.
@@klutzgolfn7009 he actually already answered your question. Older models use different valves than the newer ones. The Delta Monitor changed valves around 2006, so if you buy a valve that works with an older model made before that, it will not work with a newer one. However if your existing Monitor was made 2007 or later and you replace it with a brand new Monitor, then yes, it will use the same cartridge.
At 1:06 you ask "Am I the only one that thinks these cartridges resemble a droid?" I can see that, but I think it looks like an inverse Smurf - blue pants, white shirt. I may not remember "Delta RP19804" next time it needs to be replaced, but I can remember "inverse Smurf" forever. This video was valuable to me in that I see that I may be missing some parts, like the threaded retaining nut that holds in in place. Did the previous owner drop it into the wall? Additional investigation is called for. As it is I'm worried the cartridge may shoot out like a bullet with the water pressure. And that screw cover with the arrow, I don't have that. The previous home owner must have lost that as well.
I tried and failed -the darn thing broke in half and I had to call the Plumber after working on it for a couple of hours- Glad I did because he had to chisel the heck out of it to get it out. Had lots of calcium build up after 22 years. FYI make sure to use CLR to clean up everything inside before installing new cartridge.
True, some well waters especially will have hard water build up and cause issues from sure. Thanks for sharing your experience. Crazy that the plastic cartridge had to be chiseled out. I have seen metal to metal issues more with hard water and minerals for sure. WOW!

Great helpful video. Thank you for posting!
Great video. Great video instruction.
You are 100% correct. The cartridges do look like droids.
..excellent presentation, excellent extra tips too!
Excellent information!!! Thank you!!
Excellent video bro. Thank you! 🙏
Perfect! Now I can do it myself.. Thank You!
Nicely done video-much thanks.
THANK YOU for this Video!!!!!
Saved me $$$ for calling a Plumber....
Best Regards from Schaumburg, USA!
Great informative video! You are awesome! Thank You!
Thanks for video! Shower is fixed
Great explanation and video! Thank you and God Bless
Thanks so much for your kind comment!
Is there a way I can tell which of the two cartridges I need without pulling the existing one right out?
The only way is if you know when it was installed, as mentioned in the video. That's the only way that I know of without pulling it out.
@ThriftyToolShed unfortunately I don't so I guess I'll just have to pull it out. Can I put it right back till I get the new one from Amazon?
This video was so helpful thank you
What did you do at 5:13 to adjust the hot? Can't see anything.
I pulled out on the white knob and rotated.
great - you crushed it - thank you
Help accidently unassembled bottom housing of cartridge valve. Not sure how to put it back the right way? I kept trying to assemble it back together but water won't come on.
Just now seeing this for some reason. I know the back of the cartridge twist 90⁰ and pulls apart so to reassemble make sure the seats are still in place and press back in 90⁰ and press together and twist until straight....
very good top info well done!
@@full-light
As long as the shaft is turning it should absolutely be shutting off or at least changing flow. Strange unless the valve has internal issues.
Do you also have one for the Delta lower bathtub faucet replacement...just wondering ??
I sure don't. My tub actually has the same cartridge.
@pennygirl99
From my experience very few will actually have a way to turn off at the shower.
Great Video 👍🏼 Thank you
Thank you sir, this video helped me a lot
Will all of the newer trim kits for the Monitor 14 series fit these older style 14 cartridges (19804)? I've got a home built in '99 and I'd like to change the trim pieces out but keep everything the same behind the wall. The way the handle attaches seems similar, just wondering if the slightly longer vs shorter cartridge will give me issues.
As far as I am aware.

Thank you for this, I just realized I forgot to replace the big o-ring that keeps the metal cartridge cover from spinning. Is that bad, will that cause a leak of some kind ? Thank you.
I would absolutely put that on! That is the outer seal. I'm glad you found it helpful.
BTW
I was assuming you meant you left it out. If you simply forgot to change it to the new one, at least, it should seal with the old one. But it could pose a problem with premature failure of the seal and leak.
@@ThriftyToolShed Thank you for the speedy reply. I just called my renter & told em don’t throw it out!
@@ThriftyToolShed I didn’t get a new one in the cartridge package. so I guess it’s reusable.
I believe the length is a little bit different from the body to the seats.
Yeah I think home Depot is selling new r10000 valve body with the older carts lol thx for info man. For real
I just replaced mine and it makes a loud humming sound when I run the water. Is this normal? No leaks
I have not heard one do that myself that only started after a cartridge swap. I have seen too high of water pressure to the house cause humming or whining, but strange that it is only one valve doing it. I guess some debris could have possibly gotten into the shower head and causing the sound, maybe. Just a thought.
Thanks for your time !
Thank you so much for the video!
After the handle was unscrewed and taken off, mine has a small disc that pops off. The one in this video does not. Does anyone know what that small disc might be for?
If it's a grey plastic disc some of them do have that disc to adjust the temperature as this one has, but it was a slightly different adjust knob.
This is an example...
amzn.to/3Z9GsMI
@@ThriftyToolShed I apprecaite you getting back to me. Thanks for that. The model you linked is the exact one I ordered. There is also a notched, rotatable temperature adjuster (?) that is behind the screw that uses an allen wrench. The front disc also has to do with temperature ?
Thanks for sharing
thanks for the video man!
Thanks for your help
Would you recommend replacing the whole cartridge if my valve is leaking while the shower is on? Or just replace the springs and seats?
Sounds like the whole valve to me!
@@ThriftyToolShed that’s kinda what I was thinking! Great video sir!
Best Way to Remove the cartridge is to put the handle back on and set and then pull it out with Handle.
How do you tell the Hot side from the Cold side on the new cartridge?
The cartridge should have a mark for Hot side. Typically Hot notch goes to the left so when you rotate CCW to turn on, the cold water comes on first.
@@ThriftyToolShed Finely found the H it was so faint it look like molding lines, even then it I felt like my eyes were playing tricks on me and I was wishfully guessing.
Does the water to the house need to be shut off to replace the valve
Yes, it should be one of the first things mentioned in the video. If you do not have a local shut off valve then the main water valve will have to be cut off.
I've replaced this valve twice in a week and it is still leaking...any advice?
So it's leaking as in drips from shower head? Not around the valve itself? By replacing it twice, is that with aftermarket or actual Delta? I have had luck with my aftermarket valve, but i don't know if all are equal in quality!
Lastly, is it the correct valve as far as the length as I mentioned in the video it's two different length cartridges....
@ThriftyToolShed it's leaking from the spout. I will try the longer grey type I've replaced it twice with the blue one. It very well may be the grey one that I need ...and yes always only Delta. Thank u
Yes sir, if you still have the original double check that length!
@@ThriftyToolShed I didn't have it but for now on I'll definitely keep all parts until I know it's good. It didn't leak after the new blue part for few days and I thought I was in the clear. I'll keep u posted on the outcome. It may be the grey one
@@ThriftyToolShed I went and got a tube of silicone waterproof lubricant $4.00. That did the trick it slid right into place with a tight seal. Thanks
Thanks so much! Perfect my friend!
I'm getting up my nerve to try this. Your video made it look easy. Thanks. :o)
9/9/23 Your content was of great help.
Thank you
Great video
WOW!
Agree. I just chiseled the heck out of mine too. It didn’t want to budge. Came out piece by piece.
Thank you sir
Thank you sir.
