Doctor Who Theme | The Definitive 1963 Remaster

  • Remixed and mastered using HQ stems/layers in GarageBand.
This mix is as faithful and authentic to Delia Derbyshire’s original as I could make it, which didn’t have any white noise swells in the opening.
It rectifies the issues present in Mark Ayres’s 2002 and 2006 remasters, which includes missing swoops and unnecessary stereo effects.
©️TRofDW Remixes and Remasters 2021. Delia Derbyshire, Dick Mills and Ron Grainer of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

My Dad was in his teens when Doctor Who first came out. I asked him recently what his reaction to the music was. He said, "it sounded like the Martians from outer space landing. I'd never heard anything like it." That's a testament to the genius of Delia Derbyshire (and Ron Grainer), who in writing this brilliant piece was well ahead of her time. Yes, they were and still are inspiring 🙂

Well in Delias original mix it’s hard to hear that hiss layer because of all the distortion and what not. It probably doesn’t mesh well because the flow of it goes in and out of sync with the main theme, I don’t think it was intended to stay in beat with the theme though.

Almost perfect... Although I should point out that the original score was out of time in places deliberately. That was a creative choice, meant to give the theme an air of added mystery. The score that was NOT out of time was actually used for the Second Doctor onwards, getting updates for the 70's Era.

The other hiss tracks which I left out, the hiss “swells”, weren’t in Delias very first original mix at the start, so the first two bars of bassline are clean. The intent of this mix was to keep it far more basic, as the original theme was, not all tarted up and buggered with like Marks. I’ll have you also know, that it was only once Delia had passed away that Mark then took it upon himself to mess about with this theme, the next year in fact after she had passed. Definitely not sus at all.......that and his first mix which he released contained a plethora of incorrect cuts. He corrected those 4 years afterwards but for some reason left behind two bass grace notes at the start of the first melody sine.
