Garbage infrastructure design. The bridge is clearly not wide enough to have both bike and pedestrian traffic using it, hell it's barely enough for 2 way pedestrian traffic considering the amount of people on it. This is the reason biking fails, designers just find a random road or path, paint a bike icon on the road or path and expect it to work. Even though the route may not lead anywhere, is away from where people want to go, is in terrible shape or is unsafe. Like what is with those light poles in the way and the fence curved around the poles. Get rid of one of the traffic types on this route or widen that section, have better separation, paint the bike section a color, I mean hell half the bike icons on the ground have worn away, if a pedestrian isn't paying too much attention they wouldn't even know they are walking on a bikepath.
rjh00 I mean to remind you the Brooklyn Bridge is old as fuck. They’re already updating the Tappanzee Bridge so they don’t have enough to update another
That's not good enough, the bridge was old before they put the bikepath there, they should have realized that a bikepath where they put it just wasn't going to work or a good idea. Instead they should have maybe taken a care lane away and make it a bike lane or expanded the footpath.
Brooklyn bridge is a touristic bridge, by a Saturday in August, we know that the bridge will be totally overcrowded, furthermore if you are hurry, you could take Manhattan bridge. I know that riding Brooklyn bridge can be frustrating, but as bicycle users, we have to accepted the tourism on the bridge or change of town.
How far apart are the bridges? As in, how big of a detour is it from one bridge to the other? Aside from that, I agree with you that if Manhattan Bridge is more capable of handling the traffic bikers should use that one, but the city also has to forbid and get rid of the bikelane on Brooklyn. (at least in the manner they did it, if they converted a car lane in a bike lane it could still work, but don't know how that would affect car traffic (real affect not just typical complaints car drivers have whenever there is any downside for them). If you give bikers a lane that leads somewhere they will use it.
I just checked the distances on google maps and it's very reasonable, Brooklyn bridge should definitely not be a bike bridge in the state that it is now, there is a much better option closeby, with only a small detour, which would be much safer and better for everyone involved, also probably much quicker on some days depending on the pedestrian traffic, what good is a shorter route if you have to go at a snails pace to avoid crashing into anyone.
I was thinking the exact same thing, about the bikers. “1000’s of ppl should all yield to ME cuz I’m on a bike! I want to ride around unissued in lanes I didn’t pay for while inconveniencing everyone around me and ignore all traffic laws pertaining to me, but I’m going to scream bloody murder if I see an infraction by motorists or pedestrians.”-every biker I’ve seen
ric h Ready? Ride a bike to the bridge, acknowledge it's busy by using brain power, get off the bike, walk over the bridge, get to the end, get back on, ride away. That way you can enjoy everything AND you don't have to create drama. Easy right?
I actually prefer to use the Manhattan bridge. Both the pedestrian and bike paths are pretty clear. The only issue I find with it is that in addition to being a regular bridge, it is also a train bridge (the BDQN) and tends to be very loud/give off the impression of shaking when a train is passing.
I'm from the UK and it seems plain absurd to put the bike lane up there, why is it part of the footpath? In the UK the vast majority of bike lanes are part of the roads.
They don't want to allocate a two way bike way on the bridge's roadway to take away from the PRECIOUS MURICAN' MOTOR LANES. Fucking morons we have in this country.
When the bridge was built in the 1800's, there were few people walking across. In this decade, tourism skyrocketed (more pedestrians) and cycling skyrocketed (more bikes.) Nobody anticipated how crowded it would get.
Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883. These London Bridges all have cycling infrastructure and these are their opening dates - Blackfriars (1869), Westminster (1862), (Vauxhall (1906), Putney (1886). Just because a bridge is old doesn't mean it can't be made cycle friendly.
Just to many people on 1 bridge. 1 side walk, a 2 way bike lane, people who stop for selfies. You can't blame all the pedestrian, they have to past other pedestrian sometimes.

MarissaMacMarissa I disagree. It’s more often the fact that large groups of tourists take up the entire width of the pedestrian side, thus making it impossible to avoid walking in the bike lane. This could easily be solved if they put the road in the middle of the bridge, a bike lane on one side and a pedestrian lane on the other side.

@@SchoolforHackers don’t know what the dynamics of it are, but in this particular case at this time, pedestrians should be prioritized since they have the numbers by a huge amount. You wouldn’t make the Highline a bike lane. Obviously they should probably just increase the size of that platform if they can.
Why is their a bike lane in the pedestrian walkway anyway? I agree you guys are entitled to your own space but this time it looks like your space is on pedestrian space, it would be impossible for them not to flood over to your lane, it's too tight a space and their are too many people. I guess don't bike on the damn bridge huh? Or better yet, have some humility and patience, notice how there were other bikers too and not a single one of them shouted or yelled at a single person.
I’m glad I live in Vancouver for this sole reason, our mayor is really into cycling and so he’s slowly converted parts of the roads and sidewalks into completely separate bike lanes
If you simply put an elevated separator (curb stone) where the white line is that would solve half of the problem. Seperate the two by a fence and the problem is solved.
Well, if im not mistaken, some US majors (or some relevant folks) visited the Netherlands to have a look on our bike infrastructure. It's really not that hard, just gotta put some will behind it!
Problem is that in the US people don't really use bikes. Cycling is often just seen as a niche sport and not a transport option. At least that's what I've gathered from how people from the US complain about cyclists.
Bike lane road signs over Brooklyn bridge in contrast to regular roads are few and that too are quite erased making them inconspicuous to mainly tourist passengers, your cycling abilities are really appreciable.Thanks.
I tell you that people on the upper west side know better than to walk in the bike lane I have seen people get knocked unconscious by walking and not looking in the bike lane #respectthebikelane
People actually did a decent job walking on the right side, I've experience much worse. Costing me about 10 minutes to cross the bridge. It's obviously very frustrating being a citizen of NYC. Lanes are extremely narrow to be fair.
Whatta mess! And the fact that vendors are on the pedestrian side it doesn’t help either. Too many people for cycling, walking, jogging, taking pics, etc in such small pathway.
You are a bigger person than I . People would be flying left and right if I was driving in the bike lane. I have absolutely no patience with people that think rules do not apply to them. Kudos to you!!
Im trying to understand why some people hear the bell, the horn and the mans voice and literally dart INTO the bike lane. Or why, on some parts there is no crowding, more than enough room in the pedestrian lane and people walking in the bike lane....
This whole entire crossing was NOT thought out well AT ALL why not have two separate crossing doodads one for bike and one for people separated and then you have two way bike on the bike one too :)
Many years ago when I visited NY I was one of these tourists, invading the bike lane with zero awareness of it, all caught up in the moment "I'm on the Brooklyn Bridge OMG". It's such a narrow path with thousands of pedestrians walking and taking selfies. What's shown in the video is inevitable.

The problem in this situation is they have placed a bike lane where it is not practical to put a bike lane. You can't just slap a bike lane down anywhere and that means it will be usable
Ugh , I biked this bridge for a year or two, and I'm getting anxiety watching the ascent, just anticipating tourists blocking me and making me come to a stop and start back up again. This path was just poorly designed...
"I've got a car-horn too, but I don't want to use it.."
Liiaaaar...we *all* want you to use it!
That was stressful to watch! Well done.
Thank you!

Nothing like an 8 year old in a stroller.
Seriously!! Her knees are hanging out cause she’s far too tall
Easter eggs lol 😂
Ever heard of a disabled or delayed child? Guess not.
@@GuadalupeGuacamole Why did you assume they're disabled? Plenty of dumb parents still stroll around their hell spawn on a stroller even if they're too old
That car horn is HILARIOUS. I bet so many people are shitting themselves.
The most satisfying and frustrating things I've ever watched. Loved it.
You're cycling over one of the most well known sights in one of the biggest cities in the world on a beautiful summer day. Considering all of this, the people on the bridge were pretty aware and considerate for the most part.
you know you’re in NYC when you’re biking faster than the traffic on the bridge

"Bike, your in my bike lane!"
The car horn the way to go but man what a harrowing tour. Some good heads up biking.
Does it make sense for this to be a bike lane when the ratio of pedestrian to bike is like 50 to 1?
@@Basta11 Look during the week. Thousands of people commute by bike.
@@SchoolforHackersthat has to be measured against how many pedestrians there are.
@@Basta11 Yes, because during heavy traffic there are thousands of bikes using these, which spares the bridge lanes.
@@SchoolforHackers don’t know what the dynamics of it are, but in this particular case at this time, pedestrians should be prioritized since they have the numbers by a huge amount.
You wouldn’t make the Highline a bike lane. Obviously they should probably just increase the size of that platform if they can.
Bikes need to have a dedicated lane down on the road. As NYC population rises it will have to change one day. That bridge will be crammed.
Love watching tourists panic as they frantically try to hurry back to the walking lane.
Love the dude yelling move bike lane!!
I’ve tried to cycle across the Brooklyn bridge! It’s quite challenging. Thanks for sharing.
Stuff like this is why I enjoy my rural country lifestyle.
"Move bike lane * BEEP* *BEEP*"
*Continues to take selfie*
Ecksdee
Stop the bike. Photobomb the selfie.
Could you imagine if pedestrians had to shout “MOVE! SIDEWALK!” at cars driving at them - the uproar....🤦
Happens daily. People in cars think they are superior beings and always try to be a couple seconds quicker not carrying about a child's saftey
I’m glad I live in Vancouver for this sole reason, our mayor is really into cycling and so he’s slowly converted parts of the roads and sidewalks into completely separate bike lanes
This really confirms that I hate cities, what absolute hell being faced with that every day. I want a space to myself.
You need a train horn on that bike.
Sounds like something Niko Bellic would say.
New York .. wtf? Just remove one of the 20 car lanes and give it to the cyclists. This is shit.
unfortunately new york runs on the myth that more car lanes = less congestion
The people who hug the fence as if that’s better annoy me
If you simply put an elevated separator (curb stone) where the white line is that would solve half of the problem. Seperate the two by a fence and the problem is solved.
Don't know why I feel cycling seems to be frustrating than relaxing
It's because of other people not being aware of their surroundings, while in public.
Also, would be more relaxing if other people did not exist
3:03 Woman almost got schmacked
They really need to repaint the signs! A lot of bike lanes are like this, it’s a shame.
Oh man cycling in NYC is like Mission Impossible 😂🚴🏻
So much unnecessary ringing of that bell holy shit
I tell you that people on the upper west side know better than to walk in the bike lane I have seen people get knocked unconscious by walking and not looking in the bike lane #respectthebikelane
That horn is FANTASTIC! Is that the Orp Smart horn? It has two tones and I like it.
It's the Loud Bike Mini horn.
Thank you brother! Keep the shiny side up, your head on a swivel, and have fun! I'm enjoying ALL of your vids!
Nice.
Wow, you should get some kind of award for that ride!
i enjoyed the experience of going over the bridge at a pleasant pace, thanks
Look like they need to paint some bicycles emblem on the bike lane
Way too many people for such a small bridge
No, way too many people for a 50/50 split with a bike lane. Vehicles belong on the road, period. Not on the sidewalk.
People actually did a decent job walking on the right side, I've experience much worse. Costing me about 10 minutes to cross the bridge. It's obviously very frustrating being a citizen of NYC. Lanes are extremely narrow to be fair.
I think one of those aerosol powered 'air' horns is needed as an upgrade...🎺🎺👍😂
Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we need
I wish I lived in New York I’d just do this all day
Whatta mess!
And the fact that vendors are on the pedestrian side it doesn’t help either.
Too many people for cycling, walking, jogging, taking pics, etc in such small pathway.
*Move bike lane*
Until they fix this, you’re just glutton for punishment if you still insist on cycling over the bridge.
You are a bigger person than I . People would be flying left and right if I was driving in the bike lane. I have absolutely no patience with people that think rules do not apply to them. Kudos to you!!
Same bro I’m with u on that, I only bike across the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridge for that reason, or I just take the subway.
Im trying to understand why some people hear the bell, the horn and the mans voice and literally dart INTO the bike lane.
Or why, on some parts there is no crowding, more than enough room in the pedestrian lane and people walking in the bike lane....
2:46 THAT MANS FACE XD
This whole entire crossing was NOT thought out well AT ALL why not have two separate crossing doodads one for bike and one for people separated and then you have two way bike on the bike one too :)
Many years ago when I visited NY I was one of these tourists, invading the bike lane with zero awareness of it, all caught up in the moment "I'm on the Brooklyn Bridge OMG". It's such a narrow path with thousands of pedestrians walking and taking selfies. What's shown in the video is inevitable.
Honestly I wouldn't even bike the bridge unless I had to. Looks easier to kayak across
"Moooove biiiikee laaaaneee!!!!"
*guy has seizure and collapses on ground*
uploader: MOVE, BIKE LANE! *car horn*
They need to make it more obvious that its a bike lane
What a nice day to just hurry fast on bike ! Why not just enjoy at a chill biking pace.
Now with the pandemic, are you still using the car horn on the bike lane?
He uses the car horn in the supermarkets now..any one with 11 items in the 10 items or less line..gets blasted with a car horn
