  • Learn how to prevent or thwart bolt cutter attacks on padlocks by making the padlock shackle extremely difficult to get the bolt cutter jaws around. Increase resistance to attacks from bolt cutters when done properly. Always use a padlock with steel locking balls and pick resistant pin tumblers for maximum security. Enjoy the video!

    PLEASE READ!
    The padlock used in this video was for demonstration purposes ONLY. It was all I had on hand. I was showing you an idea to protect the shackle from bolt cutters, nothing more. I also made it very clear in the video as to the type of padlock you should be using. Besides using nuts and washers, you can also use a 3/4" OD heavy gauge compression spring cut into 2 pieces and slid over the shackle.
    Thanks for watching

      While I get that it was a demo, it was also presented as, oh don’t go buy something expensive like this Abloy when you can just do this. The responses are understandable.

    • @fracturedhearts3734
      @fracturedhearts3734 6 лет назад +2

      No it because people are dicks. Also I bet all those saying how easy a master lock it to pick have never picked a lock. So no the response are not understandable.

    • @AveragePicker
      @AveragePicker 6 лет назад +4

      It’s still a true statement. Masterlocks, in general, are easy to pick. That specific one, is used as a trainer to get people’s hopes up.
      But again, the presentation is done as, don’t buy the better lock, just do this.

    • @fracturedhearts3734
      @fracturedhearts3734 6 лет назад +3

      Yes they are a easier to pick then some(in less they have been hanging on a shed by the road for almost 10 years) . To me it did not come off that way. It was just a helpful hint. In truth all pad lock weak to some degree. LockPickingLawyer proves that even the top of the line pad locks.

    • @AveragePicker
      @AveragePicker 6 лет назад +1

      Of course all padlocks are weak to some degree. And of course any lock full of dirt and rust is going to be difficult. That’s not the issue here. And if you are going by LPL then putting bolts on the shackle is pointless anyway since you can just ramset them.
      But again, don’t lose sight of the context here. The video presents a view of a “friend” about to buy an expensive lock and he says just put bolts on the shackle of a cheap one. And then comes back saying it’s just for demonstration. But the presentation implied differently so of course people are going to call it out.

Wished I had seen this video before spending all that money. I did however used your tip to help shroud the shackles on locks securing some storage sheds. • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 лет назад

      Hey Mr Fish. :-) The hasp is another story. Usually people don't bother with the hasp if they carry a bolt cutter. They're only looking to cut shackles.

    • @adrn25m
      @adrn25m 6 лет назад

      Thieves will go for the weakest point in the security system, if padlock can not be cut easily they will cut the hasp or go for the hinges or cut the wood or metal door around the hasp or hinges.
      The padlock is only the most visible part and don’t use Chinese locks or master locks as they have too many security flaws compared to high security lock manufacturers.
      A lot of criminals laugh at master locks as most master locks are too easy to get into without bolt cutters and are not pick resistant and badly designed.

    As bolt cutters (especially dual fulcrum) make more force with the jaws almost closed, this should help get less leverage around them. It would also help if the washers are too big for bolt cutter jaws to grip.

  • @Bflo23

    This is such a great idea. People need to stop bringing up angle grinder in the comments. Less than 1% of thieves use a loud blaring angle grinder that sounds as loud as an alarm. Thieves don't want to bring attention to themselves. Even if one tries to use an angle grinder with a cutting blade, it is dangerous for him with the loose lock and the loose spinning nuts & washers. Too easy to break the thin cutting blade. This is about buying more time and making the thieves job much more difficult. Putting steel nuts on it will do the job in making it more difficult.

    • @Bflo23
      @Bflo23 5 лет назад +2

Cutting torch is better option over angle grinder in this situation but cutting torch is still very loud (reach 100db which is similar to angle grinder and alarms), still large even the portable ones, need helmet, lots of blazing attention grabbing sparks, etc.. Angle grinder and cutting torches are far from discreet. Less than 1% use those tools because they get too much attention.

    • @snowman2473

      I 100% agree with your comment. I was so pissed about people mentioning the angle grinder crap that I wrote a "mini essay reply" to someone on here about it. Here it is below, it goes more in depth with what you already stated:
      Seriously are we going to mention every little technically that can defeat a lock? What next? "Oh this is a dumb tip because C4/rocket launcher/tank turret can still defeat the lock!!" Get real! Lets look at this from a realistic perspective. 95% of thieves are carrying around nothing more then a simple, small (meaning concealable) bolt cutter. Its impossible to cut the lock using those. The other 5% are using something better that would still make it impossible to cut through using this method. The ONLY time you have to worry is if you use this method in a place where the thief is a professional, knows there's something very valuable in the locked space, has time to come with an angle grinder, has time to work without the noise alerting someone and then MABYE this will defeat the lock. How often does that happen? Almost never! So this method will work for most people who aren't trying to protect super expensive stuff with a $30 method.
      And if you have something valuable enough and know that a thief will have time to work on the lock to get to your valuable; then you would be stupid to use this method when you can spend a bit of money to protect your investments. For example, I have a buddy of mine who has $50K+ in guns and ammo. He lives in a 160 acre property. So if he went on vacation someone would have days to work on any lock without anyone hearing whats going on. But obviously since he had money to blow over $50K on a hobby he has money to protect it properly. He literally has a "movie style" steel encased safe/panic room hidden inside the wall. The panel to input the code to open the safe is a book on a bookshelf that you tip to unlock the panel. Then you have 3 chances to input the code. If you get it wrong, the police are called. That's what you do when you have real valuable.
      For the rest of us this method works just fine. If a thief is equipped well enough to defeat this method while somehow getting inside my gated/24/7 guarded community and steals my $1.5K generator (during the very brief window after a hurricane when its running); I'd say he's earned it. So I will take my chances with this cheap method. I doubt any thief will think its worth the trouble.

    • @Bflo23
      @Bflo23 4 года назад +1

      @@snowman2473 It is about buying time and making it more difficult for thieves and thick, loosely, spinning nuts does that. When I use my DeWalt angle grinder, I am cutting/grinding objects that are fully braced... Not loosely spinning nuts that could easily damage the wheel blade. Soon someone will bring up plasma cutter over the angle grinder now because "lots of thieves" use that. I wouldn't use this lock and nuts over my kryptonite NY u-lock to lock up my expensive bike but this is fine for a backyard shed where theft is less likely.

    • @gahbah274
      @gahbah274 4 года назад

      You think spinning nuts or washers would do anything? You'd just cut at 90* to them and they'd come right off. If a grinder is involved you're screwed. Honestly though, they'd probably just cut the chain, or the bike rack at that point.

    • @Bflo23
      @Bflo23 4 года назад +1

      @@gahbah274 Incorrect. You can't just vertically cut the nuts with a bolt cutter. Tough to get the correct angle and leverage vertically. Too difficult when bolt cutter blade is too wide to squeeze in and fit and plus case hardened nut in hex shape is an advantage. Round is easier to cut than hex. Most thieves use small bolt cutters. A combination masterlock on gym locker is quick snip with bolt cutter because the shackle is much weaker metal. If I am a thief with bolt cutters, I would never attack the nuts or the lock. I would simply attack the hasp latch which is the weakest part to cut due to being thin and weak metal. Your lock method is only good as your weakest link and that is the hasp. As for bike lock? Spend at least 10% on a bike lock on what your bike's worth. More if you are in high theft area. I wouldn't advise using this padlock and nuts simply because the weak picking of this lock. I wouldn't use this for my pretty expensive bikes. I use kryptonite NY standard u-lock or kryptonite NY noose chain lock. The percentage of bike thieves using portable angle grinders are like 0.0001%. Some do but the majority of them are using the basic tools. They don't want to use loud blaring spark flying power tools like angle grinders or plasma cutters.

    I used to use this method on my locker at 24 hour fitness, but after seeing countless videos of how poorly made most masterlocks are, i purchased an 88/50 Abus lock. It's unpickable, can't be shimmed open, and pretty much bolt-cutter proof. I know..some will say any lock can be picked or cut. But the fact is very few theives have the skill or time to pick this one, and pulling out a 5' long pair of bolt cutters in the locker room will draw lots of unwanted attention.

    A high quality abus granite or abloy can be had for about 50-150 dollars. I own the abus 37rk/80, abloy 362 & medium duty abloy 340 [abloy 358 will be ordered soon. These locks are top of the line. And what these locks all have in common is hardened steel bodies and hardened steel plates and or hardened steel spinning 'wheels' for anti drilling. Not only that. The 358, 362, 37RK/80 all have "top load" cores. This means an attacker will have to DRILL from the top of the body through the shackle to drop the core. The bottom of these padlocks have beefy steel protection preventing further drill exploitation. The anti drill pins/disks/washers will torque the drill bit and cause the bit to bind or snap while maintaining core security [not impossible to drill them out though.] Add a proper hasp or shackle guard you will find it easier to just cut a hole through the wall or door itself. So what I like to do is make the lock look like they might he able to get in by destroying the lock but really they can't and waste their time

    I would like to see a demo of these two setups attacked with both a bolt cutters and angle grinder. My suspicion is the bolt cutters blades will be to large to get in between the nuts or washers, but the angle grinder will fit easily between them and make short work of the shackle.

      @jacksuquett1191 6 лет назад +2

      Aluminum is one of the worst materials to cut through with a angle grinder or even a hack saw. The aluminum will gum up the blade or disc very fast. If they're able to finally cut through the Aluminum, the disc will be so gunked up it will not be able to cut through the hardened steel shackle. Also, it will take forever for the disc to cut through the Aluminum, and will make so much noise, they will most likely leave or look for a easier target.

    • @LessLethal
      @LessLethal 6 лет назад +1

      Yep. Inexpensive, higher power, lithium battery angle grinders with a cutting wheel are a total game changer for mechanical security devices. They render virtually all locks, chains, bolts and shackles pretty much moot. You can make a box to go over the lock, but the cutting wheel will just cut that off, too... But I think that falls into the category of "there's no stopping the dedicated and equipped thief, only slowing him down". If there are countermeasures that can be taken to harden the target against crackheads or butthead kids, it's worth it. That alone might make half of all thieves move on to a softer target... and if adding a better lock improves my chances by 50%, I'll take it.

    Although your Macgyver wizardry has inspired me to think... I think i might got a better idier. How about using 2 opposing bicycle neck (goose stem wedge-locks) on each side of the shackle with the 90 degree slide faces facing each other? They are available, already got the necessary holes and would increase the surface area of the shroud without also adding dinky gaps from multiple unshapely pieces. They could be drilled to size easily and lifted to tight tolerances with washers more so than using bolts. Burglars don't use cut-off disk tools because they are too loud and it takes too long but the washers and bolts idea is totally disk proof on the cheaps. The best things in life are the cheapest.

    Let’s forget that pad”lock” and think about the nuts. These are not very hard even if they are of the most usual grade 8. You need much much harder and more expensive and not so easy to find grade 12 nuts or if you don’t find them, grade 10. I don’t know if there are washers of that grade easily available but washers are not as easy to break than nuts. Nut cracker (tool) is probably one some bike thieves have and that cuts grade 8 nut really easily. But anyway nice idea and it looks hard to break which helps a lot.
