I used one of these on a uhaul for a cross country move. The trailer WAS broken into but the lock wasn’t the weakest link, in fact the thieves clearly spent a LOT of time trying to break through the lock but ultimately found that breaking the metal on the uhaul itself was easier. This lock is an absolute beast.
Which begs the question: Would using such a lock inadvertently signal to would-be burglars and thieves that the contents it is protecting is of high value and therefore worth the effort? If so, how should we overcome this?
Just to be clear: kryptonite locks that many locksmiths just say aren't pickable and grind them with an angle grinder take him 20 seconds to open with this tool
@A cat on his hind legs. true, but also if you're gonna call yourself a locksmith you should be better than amateur at the very least. if you aren't you probably shouldn't advertise yourself as one. you know what, if LPL ever runs out of locks he's interested in personally opening, he should send things to locksmiths and see if the lock comes back open or cut.

@@XiaoYueMao I wouldn’t pay a locksmith to grind a lock. I took my 9” grinder to a padlock on a chain holding a horse paddock gate closed and it took me less than 15seconds and I was being careful!
This is very cool to see and I love the cautious recommendation. At this point you really have to evaluate what you're locking because the lock could be stronger than the chain/bracket/door that you're locking!

Why has nobody made a time-based lock? Something where if it 'senses' a "key" but the act of unlocking takes more than 2 seconds its locks itself down? Surely this would stop picking atempts but allow key owners to still use the lock?
I imagine the Abus guys cheering in their office when one of them finds this video. "A Padlock I'd Use" from LPL has got to be one of the highest praises a lock can get.

@@dyingearth a good chunk of it is also picking the lock. a lock that takes lpl 1-2 minutes to open can already be considered good, it took lpl almost 3 full minutes to get this thing open. i'd trust this lock with my valuables for sure, exceptional job abus

I feel like whenever a lock manufacturer gets the LPL seal of approval, the whole office goes nuts. They set off confetti cannons, Sheryl from accounting kisses the mailboy randomly, engineering team is hugging each other while sobbing with joy, the CEO closes his office door leans back and let's out a sigh of relief.
The amount of time it took LPL to open this definitely illustrates the difference between a cheap disc-detainer core and a quality one with more discs and false gates. I'm sure even with the correct tool it would stymie a novice picker for a long time. Looks like Abus put some thought into this one and took feedback from pickers or at least picking videos when they engineered the core. I'm not sure if I have anything with a hasp good enough to hang a lock like this on.
As far as marketing goes, praise from The LockPickingLawyer, especially him saying that it's a lock he'd use himself is a HUGE deal in my opinion. At least with the customers / security professionals it matters.
While I would agree with you, we still have to acknowledge the reality and state that in order for this to be truly effective marketing it would need considerably larger demographic being aware of this along with his proficiency in picking.

Okay, so to tally the work your average thief needs to do to pick this lock: - identify the lock type and either try picking or see right away his picks won't work - research the mechanism and the kind of tool needed - build that tool (assuming they aren't being manufactured somewhere) - come back and spend a lot of time fiddling with that lock because the butterfly disks and new tool will cause him to fail a lot. The time to beat under optimal conditions and perfect understanding of the mechanism with full preparation, years of practice, special tools and zero pressure is three minutes of concentrated, uninterrupted work. A mook with a rake has no chance, a good picker with a set of tools goes nowhere unless he has the perfect tool by any chance and knows this specific lock well. For this to be picked you'd need an absolute lock fanatic and probably ten minutes or more of very obvious picking effort. Realistically, this pick will never be attempted. It will always be faster and easier to cut through what the lock hangs on, or even the shackle.
A friend had this on his shed as it stored a few valuable bicycles. The thieves tried picking and cutting the padlock but eventually found it was easier to lift the entire roof of the shed and grab the loot.
Just another reminder that locks are primarily a deterrent against low-effort, opportunist theft. -- If someone really wants in, there's always physical destruction.
What the hell, I just purchased one for ~85€ ($94 USD), in Germany. Of course it is produced here and shipping those across the globe isn't cheap, even in big amounts, but 100% markup definitely gives away that not many of these are beeing imported in the US.
Same price in France. I'd note that even abus' low quality locks are really good, probably the best you can get for the price. Were the hardest to feel open in HS.
In a safe environment, with all the right tool available, with no pressure, and already knowing what is the best way to open it, it takes an incredibly amount of effort from him! Unbelievable!

Bosnian Bill has stepped away to deal with Family matters but LPL still credits him every time their pick appears. This speaks to integrity and I have noticed it and appreciate it.

I gave my best friend a smaller version of this lock for his birthday in 2019 and it's the only lock he hasn't been able to pick yet. I am happy that I can now show him that it is possible :D

What I love about this video is when LPL says "This has a butterfly disc so it can't be picked with a tool like this. Now I'm going to pick it with this tool anyway." Nice job!
@@rupedog He explains near the end of the video - The "Butterfly" disk makes tensioning off the first disk prevent the lock from opening. So he circumvented that by tensioning off a disk further down the core.
We have sold dozens of these 80 and 60 models. Tenants love them. The removable shackles are awesome and the beefy design leaves no doubt it is simply one of the best available anywhere.
We have those Locks at work, securing hazard material containers wich are outside in the open. They are rated as weather resistant, but after a year or so, they get impossibly hard to open. greasing them once every 3-4 months is a must. Other than that, they are exceptionally tough, our Janitor once had to cut one of them open - his old angle grinder was not up to the task.
I am not longer on the coast but 90 miles / 150 km inland and have had mine for a few years and it opens smooth as can be. One of the reasons I like the lock. I pretty much just bought it for the build quality as others have noted the lock is generally overkill unless you are putting it on a pretty well guarded and hardened facility.

@@MrTruckerf A lot of us are pickers, but I suspect it's less than half, and I suspect many of those are doing it on occassion, and not as a dedicated hobby. Unfortunately, it would have no bearing on theft, as the vast majority of thieves just resort to the quickest destructive force they can dish out. Most home burglaries are less than 5 minutes overall, and they kick in the door to gain entry. They go straight to the master bedroom and toss it, which is where most people hide money, jewelry etc. that can be unloaded quickly and difficult to trace.
Confirmed 'non picker' here, as I've only ever used bolt cutters or bullet to bypass locks; he is incredibly entertaining and I've had a growing interest in learning some of the (no offense intended) easier lockpicking and bypass methods simply out of personal curiosity. He does make it look easy but most masters do.
Anyone who watches this channel definitely saw the skill required. The amount of time you spent on each disk alone much less all the fiddling you had to do on each one shows how hard that was.

The padlock is massive. I own one myself. For gym lockers and things like that, this lock won't do, this is a padlock that is designed for shipping containers and such. You come to a point where the lock is so insane, it's easier to just break whatever the lock is protecting. So if you are going to spend 100-200$ on a lock, you have to make sure that the material where you are attaching the lock, can't be broken in matter of seconds, or else it's just a waste. So this lock has limited use.

They're not disk detainer, but they *are* a heck of a lot better than a Master 141... if you wanna get really with it, a DISKUS 25/70 is a dimple key cylinder, no average raker is gonna get that... or if you're REALLY serious, an Abloy PL-321 with a Protec2 cylinder. Although given most gym lockers, a savvy attacker would just show up with a big set of vise grips and use the Abloy to wrench the hasp off the locker.... that's not gonna be nearly as simple with a DISKUS. Doable? Probably. Pain in the ASCII; they're gonna go look for another lock. Both of these guys are way less dosh than the Granit.
@@stonebear I thought some of the Diskus line did use disc detainer cores. Like the 20/70. It claims to have the ABUS Plus disc cylinder. I could be wrong and mis-remembering though.
If it takes LPL this long, I'd imagine an average picker even with the right tools would have given up and looked for another security flaw, like in the chain or hasp it's locked to
Yeah, someone broke into a uhaul with this on it, by forcing damage onto the door at several points to take down the door, despite also having tried and failing at damaging and disabling the lock. You know the lock alone wasted an hour.

Abloy 362 with a protec2. He still hasn't figured out how to pick that core yet. There's a few videos of other people picking it on RUclips though. Also the Mul-t-lock MT5+ core is arguably more pick resistant than this abus but he's gotten through several of those. The c-16 is a high security lock that you can get with that core. Also Sargent and Greenleaf locks are much stronger against destructive attacks than any of these locks.

You should do a video for your highest recommendation locks for different categories (padlock, deadbolt, trailer lock, etc) and offer both the best most expensive option along with a budget “runner-up” alternative. Your wealth of knowledge would have me buying a lot of locks in very short order!
Depends on what you're locking up, and whether a $200.00 lock is worth it if there are other easier ways to steal it. I've seen an Abus padlock on a hasp installed with the screwheads exposed.

This is a fantastic lock, took this guy some time and he had a specialty tool, skill with this style of lock, optimal holding angle under optimal lighting, was indoors and probably seated and calm. Rather than say trying to bust open a trailer at a truck stop with constant traffic some of which is probably state police, at night in possibly less than optimal weather and a truck trailer is certainly not at optimal working height for picking.

I love the way that on the Amazon UK page for this lock, the "Amazon Basics AB-PL100 Padlock - Stainless Steel" lock is listed under the "Similar item to consider" title. I suspect that LPL wouldn't consider that anywhere near "similar" - the only thing similar is that they are both technically a lock!

It's an Amazon Basics article - they plug those on anything that has a passing resemblence to a distant relative of someone who once saw the original article from a distance.
What's the difference? He can pick the lock. If the lock was positoned in an inconvenient position or angle, maybe it would take him 5 or 10 minutes instead of 1 or 3 minutes to set himself up and get the thing open.

They are known to be extremely religious for German standards and belong to a faith that the English wiki calls "Plymouth Brethren", a small protestant faith. It's one of the more ... conservative ones too, not to the level of the Amish, but they don't really believe in equal rights for women and such. Would be fun to get Twitter mad about it :)

I've had one of these for about 2 years, I got it for one of my dad's gates that we never use. He didn't like having another key so he just used a masterlock. Couple days ago I decided to buy an abus 130/180 shackle and use it on my shed lol. A bit overkill, but at least the lock won't be the weak point
Basically, the sidebar fully slides into the true gates so that it’s flush with the cylindrical shape of the core, allowing the core to turn. Since the false gates are much more shallow, the sidebar get hung up in them so it feels like it’s set but it’s still pertruding too much to allow the core to turn
I really want to see Abus put the quote "This is a lock that I'd consider using" onto their site. For people that don't follow it would be like they weren't trying to sell anything, but for people following LPL it'd be one of the highest endorsements.

That's what i was thinking, This lock took him 4 minutes and lots of concentration to get it open, I'm convinced that this is the lock i want to get

The amount of time it took LPL to open this definitely illustrates the difference between a cheap disc-detainer core and a quality one with more discs and false gates. I'm sure even with the correct tool it would stymie a novice picker for a long time. Looks like Abus put some thought into this one and took feedback from pickers or at least picking videos when they engineered the core. I'm not sure if I have anything with a hasp good enough to hang a lock like this on.
Even regular ones can confound a novice picker.
You did catch on to something if the hasp isn't as strong you would probably just use that to gain access.

Okay, so to tally the work your average thief needs to do to pick this lock:
- identify the lock type and either try picking or see right away his picks won't work
- research the mechanism and the kind of tool needed
- build that tool (assuming they aren't being manufactured somewhere)
- come back and spend a lot of time fiddling with that lock because the butterfly disks and new tool will cause him to fail a lot.
The time to beat under optimal conditions and perfect understanding of the mechanism with full preparation, years of practice, special tools and zero pressure is three minutes of concentrated, uninterrupted work.
A mook with a rake has no chance, a good picker with a set of tools goes nowhere unless he has the perfect tool by any chance and knows this specific lock well. For this to be picked you'd need an absolute lock fanatic and probably ten minutes or more of very obvious picking effort.
Realistically, this pick will never be attempted. It will always be faster and easier to cut through what the lock hangs on, or even the shackle.
And pick-resistant to LPL himself! He showed this in a video four years ago and stated that he couldn't pick it then.

Of course it is produced here and shipping those across the globe isn't cheap, even in big amounts, but 100% markup definitely gives away that not many of these are beeing imported in the US.
Same price in France. I'd note that even abus' low quality locks are really good, probably the best you can get for the price. Were the hardest to feel open in HS.

He has good things to say about Kryptonite in general. It's why I use one of their chain locks to secure my bike in the field.

@@rupedog He explains near the end of the video - The "Butterfly" disk makes tensioning off the first disk prevent the lock from opening. So he circumvented that by tensioning off a disk further down the core.

We have sold dozens of these 80 and 60 models. Tenants love them. The removable shackles are awesome and the beefy design leaves no doubt it is simply one of the best available anywhere.
We have those Locks at work, securing hazard material containers wich are outside in the open. They are rated as weather resistant, but after a year or so, they get impossibly hard to open. greasing them once every 3-4 months is a must. Other than that, they are exceptionally tough, our Janitor once had to cut one of them open - his old angle grinder was not up to the task.
I am not longer on the coast but 90 miles / 150 km inland and have had mine for a few years and it opens smooth as can be. One of the reasons I like the lock. I pretty much just bought it for the build quality as others have noted the lock is generally overkill unless you are putting it on a pretty well guarded and hardened facility.
You know you're a winner when you have 3.65M subscribers who really are not into locksmithing. This guy is just so entertaining and proficient. Everyone loves a genius.

@@MrTruckerf A lot of us are pickers, but I suspect it's less than half, and I suspect many of those are doing it on occassion, and not as a dedicated hobby. Unfortunately, it would have no bearing on theft, as the vast majority of thieves just resort to the quickest destructive force they can dish out. Most home burglaries are less than 5 minutes overall, and they kick in the door to gain entry. They go straight to the master bedroom and toss it, which is where most people hide money, jewelry etc. that can be unloaded quickly and difficult to trace.
Confirmed 'non picker' here, as I've only ever used bolt cutters or bullet to bypass locks; he is incredibly entertaining and I've had a growing interest in learning some of the (no offense intended) easier lockpicking and bypass methods simply out of personal curiosity. He does make it look easy but most masters do.
I own a set of picks, but apart from raking open a 2€ padlock my picking skills are none existent.
This is the only channel I know where 99.99% of products reviewed are flawed. Once is a blue moon, comes this golden egg.
Anyone who watches this channel definitely saw the skill required. The amount of time you spent on each disk alone much less all the fiddling you had to do on each one shows how hard that was.
Yeah, and you need to know "when you have it" to be able to find the zero cut to tension off of to open the lock.

I've got to say, as entertaining and educational as it is to watch you open so-called high security locks as if they were child-safety latches, these videos where you cover locks that turn out to be good have practical benefits that are hard to beat. Thank you, and keep doing the good work!
It's a $100 padlock. It's not going to sell in droves, regardless of how good it is. People are barely willing to spend $20 on a padlock.
The padlock is massive. I own one myself. For gym lockers and things like that, this lock won't do, this is a padlock that is designed for shipping containers and such. You come to a point where the lock is so insane, it's easier to just break whatever the lock is protecting. So if you are going to spend 100-200$ on a lock, you have to make sure that the material where you are attaching the lock, can't be broken in matter of seconds, or else it's just a waste. So this lock has limited use.

They're not disk detainer, but they *are* a heck of a lot better than a Master 141... if you wanna get really with it, a DISKUS 25/70 is a dimple key cylinder, no average raker is gonna get that... or if you're REALLY serious, an Abloy PL-321 with a Protec2 cylinder. Although given most gym lockers, a savvy attacker would just show up with a big set of vise grips and use the Abloy to wrench the hasp off the locker.... that's not gonna be nearly as simple with a DISKUS. Doable? Probably. Pain in the ASCII; they're gonna go look for another lock. Both of these guys are way less dosh than the Granit.

This seems to be a lock where it would be easier to disassemble everything around it instead of the lock itself to get to what it protects.
It can't be non destructively disassembled with the shackle in place, i.e., locked.
You know when he spends more than 3 minutes picking a lock, it's proper quality.
Typically over 1 minute is a ringing endorsement for doing something right.
2 minutes is stock affecting. And 3 minutes is downright unheard of!
And when he grabs for the rake it is crsp.
i love seeing locks that you actually recommend, they're so few and far between, i would also like to see those false gates just a little deeper, and the shackle guard at least upgradeable to a hardened steel one. great job of showing us this lock, and as always, thanks for all the enjoyable content!

Entry level to high security. Kinda makes you wonder what true maximum security would be to LPL.
Abloy 362 with a protec2. He still hasn't figured out how to pick that core yet. There's a few videos of other people picking it on RUclips though. Also the Mul-t-lock MT5+ core is arguably more pick resistant than this abus but he's gotten through several of those. The c-16 is a high security lock that you can get with that core. Also Sargent and Greenleaf locks are much stronger against destructive attacks than any of these locks.

You should do a video for your highest recommendation locks for different categories (padlock, deadbolt, trailer lock, etc) and offer both the best most expensive option along with a budget “runner-up” alternative. Your wealth of knowledge would have me buying a lot of locks in very short order!
Depends on what you're locking up, and whether a $200.00 lock is worth it if there are other easier ways to steal it. I've seen an Abus padlock on a hasp installed with the screwheads exposed.
The fact that everything around the lock will be destroyed, as an easier solution than picking, is re-assuring.

This is a fantastic lock, took this guy some time and he had a specialty tool, skill with this style of lock, optimal holding angle under optimal lighting, was indoors and probably seated and calm. Rather than say trying to bust open a trailer at a truck stop with constant traffic some of which is probably state police, at night in possibly less than optimal weather and a truck trailer is certainly not at optimal working height for picking.
Not only that, but 'in the field' there's probably a bunch of other potential trailers to choose from with far shittier locks

I love the way that on the Amazon UK page for this lock, the "Amazon Basics AB-PL100 Padlock - Stainless Steel" lock is listed under the "Similar item to consider" title. I suspect that LPL wouldn't consider that anywhere near "similar" - the only thing similar is that they are both technically a lock!

What's the difference? He can pick the lock. If the lock was positoned in an inconvenient position or angle, maybe it would take him 5 or 10 minutes instead of 1 or 3 minutes to set himself up and get the thing open.

I've had one of these for about 2 years, I got it for one of my dad's gates that we never use. He didn't like having another key so he just used a masterlock.
Couple days ago I decided to buy an abus 130/180 shackle and use it on my shed lol. A bit overkill, but at least the lock won't be the weak point

Basically, the sidebar fully slides into the true gates so that it’s flush with the cylindrical shape of the core, allowing the core to turn. I really want to see Abus put the quote "This is a lock that I'd consider using" onto their site. For people that don't follow it would be like they weren't trying to sell anything, but for people following LPL it'd be one of the highest endorsements.

True, but the main purpose of the gutting is to prove that what he picked matches the difficulty of his what he claims. Not that anyone doubts him at this point, but it's a show of integrity.
