    This reminded me of one I wrote roughly a zillion years ago. My grandmother had died and I started thinking how I missed her and how I wished I could have had just a few more minutes with her. That turned into a hook of 'Just a few minutes more'. I gave it three verses where the character speaking wished for a little more time. One was a kid who didn't want to get out of a warm bed to go to school. One was a soldier who didn't want to leave his family to go back to his duty. And the third was being by Granny's bedside right after she'd passed. Each asked for more time. But it was a more serious request in each successive verse.

    I'm gonna try something very similar, which I think might be useful to some people.
    1) Set a timer for 1 hour
    2) Write as much as possible in that 1 hour
    3) Take a break after that 1 hour (i.e. go for a walk; read a book; have a cup of coffee; etc.)
    4) Eventually, come back to the song later with a refreshed/clear mind (this is optional, but could be a good idea)
    This might be good for people who usually try to write or finish songs in one sitting.
    (I usually try to write songs in one sitting with the aim/intention to finish them, so I'm giving myself something new to try, hopefully it will be helpful to someone else as well)

      It's actually a good lesson, because Beth Hart has been put on the spot three times. The TV show Quelli Che asked her to come up with a song in two minutes with musicians she never worked with. Eric Gales asked her on stage to sing Catfish Blues. She didn't know the lyrics so he told her to make them up. Beth Hart was in Belgium with a quality band to promote a covers album. The band made up a song on the spot during sound check with her on vocals. It is called Antwerp Bop.

    An interesting point here is that setting yourself this challenge could be agreat way to bypass writer's block. We've all had it - sit down, switch on, and..... nope. Now tell yourself that you HAVE to write a song in an hour, and I'll bet you will achieve it. Doesn't matter if you go back later and spend another 40 hours "perfecting" it, the idea is the seed. Nicely done m'lady! :O)

    • @johanjof5613
      @johanjof5613 6 лет назад +1

      I couldnt agree more. I am so intend to do something perfect, critizing myself after 3mn of work, that I never reach something. I should definitly kick me in the ass with challenges like this to come up with a complete song and not just pieces. The thing is that beyond guitar and bass, my ideas come out of a lot of sampling explorations which takes a lot of time, so I don't know how I should deal with that... At least Ive just discovered I have the same headphone as Mary, its a good start. What is the drum box ? And ehmmm, Mary Spender, if you "just want one more minute" with me, just go for it :P

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 6 лет назад +2

      E.G. You are typing what I was thinking. I was thinking about it was a way to force ideas out unfiltered. They don't have to be perfect, they just have to exist. From there, you have a base, where you launch off onto something more polished.

She really is an awesome talent ❤

    I once almost wrote a song in 14 seconds. It was sped up, though. And it sucked. It was about designing chess pieces that fish in spacesuits could manipulate with chopsticks in an average living room. My mate had a circa 1966 spacesuit, and I was taking care of his fish while he was away. During the creative process, I forgot to write the song. The whole thing turned out rather badly, but the concept is solid. To this day, one of his fish manipulates space suits in repeated patterns with chopsticks at 21 degrees Celsius.
