This reminded me of one I wrote roughly a zillion years ago. My grandmother had died and I started thinking how I missed her and how I wished I could have had just a few more minutes with her. That turned into a hook of 'Just a few minutes more'. I gave it three verses where the character speaking wished for a little more time. One was a kid who didn't want to get out of a warm bed to go to school. One was a soldier who didn't want to leave his family to go back to his duty. And the third was being by Granny's bedside right after she'd passed. Each asked for more time. But it was a more serious request in each successive verse.
I'm gonna try something very similar, which I think might be useful to some people. 1) Set a timer for 1 hour 2) Write as much as possible in that 1 hour 3) Take a break after that 1 hour (i.e. go for a walk; read a book; have a cup of coffee; etc.) 4) Eventually, come back to the song later with a refreshed/clear mind (this is optional, but could be a good idea) This might be good for people who usually try to write or finish songs in one sitting. (I usually try to write songs in one sitting with the aim/intention to finish them, so I'm giving myself something new to try, hopefully it will be helpful to someone else as well)
this is turning into a really interesting youtube challenge for every musician! PS Rob had a camera guy near him who talked to him. you were by yourself!
It's actually a good lesson, because Beth Hart has been put on the spot three times. The TV show Quelli Che asked her to come up with a song in two minutes with musicians she never worked with. Eric Gales asked her on stage to sing Catfish Blues. She didn't know the lyrics so he told her to make them up. Beth Hart was in Belgium with a quality band to promote a covers album. The band made up a song on the spot during sound check with her on vocals. It is called Antwerp Bop.
This is my first time on your channel. I came over from Frog Leap Studios where you did Sultans of Swing. Both that piece and this song in a hour were fantastic. I'm a fan now!
Excellent work Mary! Reminds me of a binge I went on a couple years back where I made myself write, record, and mix an album in 5 days. It's really incredible some of the stuff you can come up with under tight time constraints. Loved the song and especially that solo!
Mary... you are one of the best, SUPER, creative, open, gutsy, informative, talented, entertaining S/S Artists around. And just a joy to watch. Thank you so much for sharing some of your creative process's, and all with such grace and humor to boot!
You said we might be bored...not once! I just watched in amazement, the whole time! You've definitely got talent! Such a beautiful voice too! That's the thing I've struggled with my whole life...vocals! I can figure out an instrument, given time. But the vocals...that's the tough part for me! Thanks for such a cool video. I really enjoyed it, and the song was pretty good for only taking 1 hour to make! Awesome job!👍😎🎸🎶
Nice to see your creative process in action. Felt a bit sorry when you seemed to panic a bit, but you ended up a with great song! Bit more refined than Rob's, even. Though I kinda missed a "That's what I'm talking about, Bill" in the lyrics ;)
Wow! I just discovered you and your channel (and your dark pal over in Screamo-land) and can't wait to hear more! I love this song you wrote in just an hour. Its stuck in my head, in a very good way.
Amazing production value in such short time - guitar solo, harmonies - and a nice melody! The use of the whammy bar on that St Vincent too -- very cool.
God, you have one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my entire life. & youre just so overall musically talented. My mind is absolutely blown. Why tf am I just now hearing about you?! Where have you been all my life?!!? Definitely binge watching your channel tonight lol.
Looking at the end product of your work, you look so calm playing and singing, but underneath you are rushing about trying to get things done. Mary, you are an extremely talented young lady, and what you produced was a beautiful song, I love your music, and this is no exception, looking forward to seeing you in Manchester next month...
Found your channel because of this. Your voice is angelic, your playing beautiful, and your composition was better then what I could write given 6 months! (give me seven, though... XD) Point is, I dig.
Love it. I have all the gear and quite a bit of talent but there’s no way I could do this in an hour !!! I love how the lyrics reflect her panic with writing the song and it’s clever how she’s turned it into a break up song. Go girl🎸🎤🎶😎
Awesome! Having written and recorded myself I know how what a challenge this is. And my 8 year old daughter is now a fan as well. Hope you have a good gig tonight in Brizzle, and we will get to see you play one day.
Mary, from Chicago here. I first heard of you on Guitareo, and have been a fan ever since. Mary, I love you 😍❤🎸; you are beautiful, talented and very down to earth, which is very refreshing! All the best from the Chicagoland area!
Wow! And I thought I was a musician... boy, was I wrong! I wish I was half as talented as you are. Thank you for creating this channel and for sharing your knowledge, people like you are a true inspiration for other musicians. Thank you Mary
It's like you knew that my situation changed for the worse and you wrote this to help me get through it. Great job for so little time. Keep doing what your doing
That is actually the best way to see you for the first time!!!! As gifted as talented you are! Maybe you should try it again on live so people can give you lyrics ^^
So I just saw you for the first time on the Sultans of Swing video by Leo and I came right to your page and this video is my real first impression of you and I am beyond impressed and I love this song. I can not wait to check out the rest of your art.
Mary, you are so, so talented. You are also bright, bubbly, gorgeous and have charisma in spades. If you don’t end up a household name there’s no justice in this world. Go girl!
you are very talented and a great singer I saw the video you made with frogleap studio and fell in love with it that video is what gives me the push to do music these challenges there not only for the RUclips viewers but also to make you better as a musician
Edit: You really did a great job with that 'basic track'. One hour really is not much time to write, compose, record and mix up a whole song so what you created in these few minutes is amazing. And your voice is adorable ;)
I am so in love Bit now that I got that out lol I got here from Leo's channel and so glad I did. Everyone of the people I have witnessed through all of this is so damn talented and so fun that I actually hate myself for being so lame. Thank you so much for being such awesome human beings
you totally inspired me to do this. I haven't written or even really played in almost 5 years!! but after watching your video, I dusted off my guitars and started writing.
Well Mary, I really enjoyed this. I love your authenticity. It really is inspiring. Thank you for sharing the challenge! Great fun and wow! What a lovely voice you have?!
Shows the discipline of keeping it simple can often be very effective. I think sometimes you can overthink things in songwriting. That said some ideas are just so good you have to take time to get them right. Really enjoyed this.
An interesting point here is that setting yourself this challenge could be agreat way to bypass writer's block. We've all had it - sit down, switch on, and..... nope. Now tell yourself that you HAVE to write a song in an hour, and I'll bet you will achieve it. Doesn't matter if you go back later and spend another 40 hours "perfecting" it, the idea is the seed. Nicely done m'lady! :O)
I couldnt agree more. I am so intend to do something perfect, critizing myself after 3mn of work, that I never reach something. I should definitly kick me in the ass with challenges like this to come up with a complete song and not just pieces. The thing is that beyond guitar and bass, my ideas come out of a lot of sampling explorations which takes a lot of time, so I don't know how I should deal with that... At least Ive just discovered I have the same headphone as Mary, its a good start. What is the drum box ? And ehmmm, Mary Spender, if you "just want one more minute" with me, just go for it :P
E.G. You are typing what I was thinking. I was thinking about it was a way to force ideas out unfiltered. They don't have to be perfect, they just have to exist. From there, you have a base, where you launch off onto something more polished.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this Mary. Your voice is EPIC and that melody so... jazzy??? As a fellow songwriter, I totally get the panic 😁😁😂😂😉😉. Great job Mary!!!
This turned up in my RUclips feed again today. I first saw it when it was posted in 2018 and was in fact the first time I had come across Mary. She only had about 20k subscribers then. It’s brilliant to see how her career has developed since, having just completed a UK tour and released her debut album, along with releasing all of the brilliant material she has produced since then. She really is an awesome talent ❤
I once almost wrote a song in 14 seconds. It was sped up, though. And it sucked. It was about designing chess pieces that fish in spacesuits could manipulate with chopsticks in an average living room. My mate had a circa 1966 spacesuit, and I was taking care of his fish while he was away. During the creative process, I forgot to write the song. The whole thing turned out rather badly, but the concept is solid. To this day, one of his fish manipulates space suits in repeated patterns with chopsticks at 21 degrees Celsius.
Really pleased that's all on your vibe ... A lot of people would have probably skipped what sounds like them and gone for something more generic. Bravo. Plus it's good to have a laugh with yourself and then share it with the world so that they can smile with you. All the best
As A long time singer/songwriter/guitarist, I have to say I'm mightily impressed. Even if I had the recording gear, and the software (not to mention the understanding of said software), I don't think I could ever achieve this.
Your best song? No. Impressive? Absolutely!!👍🏻 Creating under the gun is probably one of the hardest thing an artist can do. Well done Miss. Spender. Just love watching you.
Really cool video Mary. Great editing to make it so engaging. I'm sure I'm not alone in that you had me rooting for you, like a piece of suspenseful drama. Although I'm probably over analysing as usual. As for the track itself, really impressive. Particularly like the line "I don't know where this song is going" as metaphor, and literally cry for help! 😄
That was honestly really good, it would be cool if you finished up the song and did a video on fine adjustments and going over what you would've changed :)
Interesting seeing the process. My brother does some of this so I have seen bits of it in action. Anyways keep all your cool, creative stuff going. Me I only wish I could do stuff like this as I love music!
I watched a lot of people do this challenge. It just hit me, the easiest song to produce would have been a 1950's country waltz or two step. That's the whole thing behind Nashville Numbering and mass producing music. Liked your song. Hope you keep playing with the concept.
God. I can't believe the great video I have seen. Great. Well job. I have seen a lot of 60-minutes-song-challenge but it is the second one I can say wow I am very impressive, the first one was Paul Davids' Challenge. I only have nice words to describe this video, I am really impressive. I do love this challenge, how creative you were, how you controlled the situation and time, creating lyrics using the theme of video, like "I just want more time", creating bass lines and guitar and vocal harmonies, and drum tracks too. You girl, you have won a new suscriber because your great video and excellent song, I expect more High-Quality video content like this! Good luck.
Really love the track - anyone who write and records knows what a huge ask this is. You should re-record it spending as much time as you want then A/B compare the two - would be interesting to see which version people prefer. Thanks for another awesome upload :)

That was awesome Mary :)
Your move, Jared Dines
Sorry Rob but she killed you on the vocals ;)
At least he's still a better singer than Roomie
I love ya Rob, but I am cheering for Mary to kick your butt in this challenge! :)
LMAO (Yep)
This reminded me of one I wrote roughly a zillion years ago. My grandmother had died and I started thinking how I missed her and how I wished I could have had just a few more minutes with her. That turned into a hook of 'Just a few minutes more'. I gave it three verses where the character speaking wished for a little more time. 1) Set a timer for 1 hour
2) Write as much as possible in that 1 hour
3) Take a break after that 1 hour (i.e. go for a walk; read a book; have a cup of coffee; etc.)

This might be good for people who usually try to write or finish songs in one sitting.
(I usually try to write songs in one sitting with the aim/intention to finish them, so I'm giving myself something new to try, hopefully it will be helpful to someone else as well)
i wrote a few . now be fun for a person to read them. i dont have much equipment, just notepad. ;)
Honestly better than 99% of material on the radio
totally agree...!
this is turning into a really interesting youtube challenge for every musician!
Same
Same here.
Me toooo
Yes! Me too
We all walked on the same path :-)
This was wildly impressive 👊🏼👊🏾
Bruh really?
Excellent work Mary! Reminds me of a binge I went on a couple years back where I made myself write, record, and mix an album in 5 days. It's really incredible some of the stuff you can come up with under tight time constraints. Loved the song and especially that solo!
As a session guitarist it is hard enough coming up with memorable parts in an hour. I think you killed it.
In blues, it's I IV V with lots of "borrowing."
And she definitely sings better than Roomie 😂😂
Everybody knows
but roomie completed the whole process. with mixing and mastering. everything in one hour...
Roomies was far better, she was off key on some spots which hurts the ear holes.
John.E SANCHEZ roomie stays on time better but I would take Mary any day because she sings with soul. Roomie kind of sings like a robot
@@D3RTY I actually like when she go a little of key in some micro parts. I don't know it kinda cool, cause it is like Sia cracks and stuff.
Mary... you are one of the best, SUPER, creative, open, gutsy, informative, talented, entertaining S/S Artists around. And just a joy to watch. Thank you so much for sharing some of your creative process's, and all with such grace and humor to boot!
You are a wonderful musician and I loved to see how you developed your idea to a complete song
Love the vibe of this song!! So much creativity in just 1 hour :) your voice is absolutely stunning too!
The " Creative Process " , Is facinating, ....and different for nearly everyone.
You did a heck of a job Mary! Well done. Singing about stuff around is always the best solution when you are short on time.
Nice to see your creative process in action. Felt a bit sorry when you seemed to panic a bit, but you ended up a with great song! Bit more refined than Rob's, even. Though I kinda missed a "That's what I'm talking about, Bill" in the lyrics ;)

Tastefully done. Had I only listened to the final track instead of watching, I wouldn't have known this was created in an hour. Well done, Mary.
Out of all the 1 hour songs I heard, I think this one was the most interesting. Really well done Mary
God, you have one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my entire life. & youre just so overall musically talented. My mind is absolutely blown. Why tf am I just now hearing about you?! Where have you been all my life?!!? Definitely binge watching your channel tonight lol.
Wonderful result and I love that the lyrics are also time related. :)
Looking at the end product of your work, you look so calm playing and singing, but underneath you are rushing about trying to get things done. Mary, you are an extremely talented young lady, and what you produced was a beautiful song, I love your music, and this is no exception, looking forward to seeing you in Manchester next month...
Figuring out your vocal melodies while doing the guitar part is genius, Rob should've done that. It saved you loaaaads of time ! Good job
Found your channel because of this. Your voice is angelic, your playing beautiful, and your composition was better then what I could write given 6 months! (give me seven, though... XD)
Point is, I dig.
Good job Mary.... sounds amazing when you hear it all coming together at the end.... well done
This was awesome! I think this is the type of challenge all of us need in our life. Sometimes having too much time ruins the creative process.
This is probably the coolest vibe of all of the 1-hour songs I've seen so far
Love it. I have all the gear and quite a bit of talent but there’s no way I could do this in an hour !!! I love how the lyrics reflect her panic with writing the song and it’s clever how she’s turned it into a break up song. Go girl🎸🎤🎶😎
That was so Cool Mary! Awesome Triumph! and the Electric part with Trem really sounded perfect with that! _ Always Your Spirit is 'Priceless!'🎼
Awesome! Having written and recorded myself I know how what a challenge this is. And my 8 year old daughter is now a fan as well. Hope you have a good gig tonight in Brizzle, and we will get to see you play one day.

Definitely earned my subscription with that! Wow! You’re awesome! Thank Pete and Rob for sending me here.
That is actually the best way to see you for the first time!!!! As gifted as talented you are! Maybe you should try it again on live so people can give you lyrics ^^
Congratulations Mary!!👏🎶🎸💜 this is amazing, beautiful song.

Mary Spender. Mary Spender. Mary Spender. Mary Spender. Mary Spender. Mary Spender. Mary Spender.
It's amazing how it all comes together into something beautiful, far more than the sum of the parts. I like this.

I am so in love

Love this. Not bored at all by watching the process. Song's quite good as well
Watching someone else go thru what many of us go thru constantly is way cool. I’m not the only one ☝️. Grace and peace be with u
My favorite youtuber.... you're smart and awesome. You make amazing music. Nuff said.

What
Hello GPT-3 :-)
Haha! Now THAT is original
From jack coyne -> colin & samir -> i love where i am . thank you

OMG you blow me away !!!!! i can't tell how amazing is this
I love the way you say "Tuesday talks" and great video by the way
1 hour... that's incredible! I enjoyed watching this and I admire your gift of song!
Imagine what you could do in 2 hours..!
Awe...some... you have to thank Leo for introducing you to the world. You rock. Keep it up you beautiful musician.
That was great! I didn't intend to watch the whole video but you kept me hooked! I love you accent too.
Wow ! You're an incredible musician !
Wow. I just chanced upon this and I'm totally loving it. You are so talented. Just subscribed and am looking forward to more from you.
the blues/soul in your voice is insane!!!!
Your best song? No. Impressive? Absolutely!!👍🏻 Creating under the gun is probably one of the hardest thing an artist can do. Well done Miss. Spender. Just love watching you.
I like the idea of giving yourself the deadline, amazing how motivating this can be! Very interesting indeed!
First video I've seen of your's and I subbed before it was over. Great job, I love your voice!
Honestly fair play for making this in an hour it’s a pretty good song!
Really nice to see this! Congratulations on putting it up and through!
Part of the challenge should have been to use the word Roomie more than 5 times in the lyrics.
Wow Mary, that was truly inspiring. You are going to go far. You've have amazing talent. Keep up the great work...😀
Really cool video Mary.
My fav so far! It's not about the hour it took to write a song. It's about the thousands of hours it took to be able to do it in an hour.
That was honestly really good, it would be cool if you finished up the song and did a video on fine adjustments and going over what you would've changed :)
Haha love the challenge! And I enjoyed listening to the outcome! Better than a whole lotta popular stuff out there nowadays.
Found you via Leo... couldn't be happier. Keep the awesome going!
Interesting seeing the process. My brother does some of this so I have seen bits of it in action. Anyways keep all your cool, creative stuff going. Me I only wish I could do stuff like this as I love music!
And it actually works! I love the mellow feel.
This is great. I've been doing similar things with more time for a long time. I love your methodology.
I watched a lot of people do this challenge. It just hit me, the easiest song to produce would have been a 1950's country waltz or two step. That's the whole thing behind Nashville Numbering and mass producing music. Liked your song. Hope you keep playing with the concept.
Mary spender desde Argentina te sigo, me gusta mucho tu música y como lo expresas!
I’ve watched all of the contenders and this song is my favorite. Admittedly lyrics could be more fleshed out yet an exceptional project overall!
Good luck.
It's so fun to see the behind the scene and struggle of making a song (as someone that gone through it)
Great song, really enjoyed watching you write this song, well done
Excellent songwriting and performance. That was quite a feat!
I’m so glad this popped up on my feed... so awesome
Love it, great job. Especially love the timelapse where you can see every hard-work face you make :)
Not only talented your drop dead gorgeous!
Really love the track - anyone who write and records knows what a huge ask this is. You should re-record it spending as much time as you want then A/B compare the two - would be interesting to see which version people prefer. Thanks for another awesome upload :)
I am in awe of your awesomeness AND you have St. Vincent!
Just wow
That was pretty awesome
Very interesting to see your composition process
Fun, impressive, and inspiring! I love the vocal work!
Excellent. You have such a interesting tonal sound to your voice. I'm a Fan
