- Is moss an interesting macro photography subject to shoot at home? Let's find out!
In this quick macro photography tutorial, Ben is taking Sam's advice to take a look at shooting garden moss. Getting really close up with a reversed lens setup, we go exploring inside miniature jungle of green grass and alien trees.
We will also add some water drops with a spray bottle for some added subject matter in our mini forest, resulting in some nice bokeh and reflections.
We're going to take a quick look at the macro photography setup needed to get this close and then talk about the lighting for photographing moss at home or in the garden - bit.ly/adaptalux

Thanks Vimal, welcome to the channel!
Thank you for the video! Realy great! I’ve just started and this is very helpful and inspirational. Never thought on combining tubes, adapter and reverse ring can produce this amazing results!
There's lots you can do with some simple old lenses and some extension tubes! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I love this kind of creativity in photography.

Welcome to the channel James, keep experimenting with your cameras and I'm sure a favourite will emerge, everyone has their own way of working!
I used to wear a shirt like that to school - in 1984. Loved it.
Black polo shirts are basically my uniform for life :)
Great tip about holding the aperture with a rubber band! I definatly going to try it. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Glad you found it helpful Anne!

Awesome. Well done
Thanks :)
Lichen is also great to macro, millions of tubes.

I have some Lichen around from some previous shoots, I might make a video on that too at some point thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks!

@@Adaptalux 😀👍👋 cheers Ben
what is the name of light you are using?
Nice promo for your light
We like to show people how it works!
Great tutorial. Two questions, your lighting stand, what is it called and were can I get one;.
Hey Henry, It's the Adaptalux Studio, you can see more info here - adaptalux.com/studio/
苔は良いよね👍
Sure is!
Great vid, excellent learning opportunity. I use Nikon D750, i do have 50 mm lense, I am able to find
FotodioX 52mm Reverse Mount Macro Adapter Ring for Nikon F-Mount Cameras in B&H, however i couldn;t find the extension tube you showed in your video. Could you please give some details on it. Thanks. BN
Not sure of the exact model, its quite cheap and generic (no contact pins or anything). Any similar Nikon fit extension tube would have the same effect provided it has a thread on the other end for the reversing ring.
Hello, what's the name of the lighting?
with the 5 flexible arms, is there any at Amazone?
Dieter from Germany says thank you
It's called the Adaptalux Studio, you can find out more here - adaptalux.com/studio/
I have a Lumix FZ330 bridge camera. Will I be able to get decent results using that?
I'm not too familiar with your model but it looks like it has a good optical zoom, you you might be able to get nice and close...only one way to find out!
Excellent, thank you very much, can I get that light adapter on Amazon? or where can I get it for Colombia South America bye
Adaptalux.com
I like it, but will have to do my own DIY lighting on the cheap ........ those lights of yours are nice for sure - but only for those with very deep pockets !
Hey Paul, they are worth the investment, but I like to think that a lot of the techniques and tips on these tutorials can be applied to any kind of lighting. There are a lot of cheaper LED lights and lamps out there that will get the job done, just maybe with a bit more hassle... let us know if you get yourself set up, I'd be interested to see your results!
Same, I see so many ways I could use these, but I can’t afford them
Hello @Paul Harding I follow adaptalux since the beginning of the campaign, yes the material is not cheap, there are alternatives, but from the bottom of my heart I recommend, I had a year and a half to join to be able to buy, I had the opportunity to buy other more cheap, but still good that I did not, Adaptalux was the best investment I made in lights so far, it's worth it ...
@@StinkyDustyBird Hello the Adaptalux was the best investment I made in lights so far, it's worth it ...
I would like to know where to get the lighting arms that were on the Manfrotto mini tripod.
Thanks!
Adaptalux.com
What did you use as background ?
No background needed. The light on the subject rendered everything behind the moss too dark to see once you get past the rest of the moss.
I just got my Macro lens and well you have given me more ideas. Thanks. Now where do I get moss. lol
You can usually find it wherever water collects...this piece fell off my roof, conveniently.
I have shot some macro on mosses early last winter here in India, and that was when, I came to know that they bore these seedy things. Really good macro experience that, all in outdoor natural lighting scene though. Wish i could show you a few here !!
It's a great subject for the winter before all the flowers bloom!
Which Manfrotto light uh use
Plz give a mpdel no. Or link
The light is our own product, you can find more info here - adaptalux.com/studio/ the mini-tripod is a Manfrotto Pixi Evo 2.
where can i get those lighting arms thanks! great tutorial btw
Thanks, you can learn more about the lighting here - adaptalux.com/
Great macro photography. I love watching your videos. Just one question. How can i get the lights you are using in India? It seems Amazon India is not selling them.
Thanks Suman, you can get them over on our website, we ship worldwide - adaptalux.com/shop/
@@Adaptalux Thanks
Where do you buy the lights with tripod?
adaptalux.com/
What do you think of the Nikon 40mm F/2.8G AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR lens? Cheers
Never used it!
Great lens for portraits and street photography, yet the lousiest lens ever for macro.
Very nice! Did you use a black backdrop?
Nope, no backdrop, just very under exposed compared to the foreground.
Nice work and very clever. I am curious about your lighting set up. Can you tell me the name of it and where you bought it....? Thank you.
Hey Max, It's our own design, you can find out more about it here - adaptalux.com/studio/

Very well done. Love your video's. Where would I buy the moss?
Thanks, William. No idea where to buy moss though, this stuff fell off my roof! Might be better to go foraging .
great video, could you please say to me what's your lens setting ? is it argentic lens ? thanks you so much very good video
It's a very old manual prime lens, reversed with extension tubes.
Nice. Where to buy these extension tube and ring. I use canon 2000d.
Amazon would be a good bet, I have no idea where this specific one came from, sorry!
I like your lighting. What brand?
It's our brand. Adaptalux.com

Next try it with photo stacking. It would be perfectly sharp
Where did you get the light.
We make it! You can learn more here - adaptalux.com/studio/
@@Adaptalux thanks!!!
How do you photograph moss on a steep mountain side?
You could use many of the same techniques seen here... but you will be a little more uncomfortable while doing so.
You can try a 10X close-up lens. By the way, the red light makes me feel horrible.
Could you expand on how the red makes you feel horrible? I think the colour in the background makes for a much more interesting shot, like a wildfire in an enchanted forest!
Adaptalux It feels like blood red.😂
Just a red LED, promise :)
The background music in this video made me check my phone for notifications a lot.
*BING*
I really love photography but can't afford to buy dslr camera even if those second hand one it's so much expensive here in the philippines.
Photography can be an expensive hobby for sure, maybe think about a clip on macro lens for your phone to tide you over?
Use your phone camera, it's good enough. I use my phone through my telescope to shoot the moon, and also for macro on Earth.
Download a magnifying glass app, capture a screenshot through the the magnifier, edited out the edges, you'd be amazed at the detail. Forget about dslr & other expensive stuff.
Improvise. Happy shooting
damn! this is so cool but i can use it on a mirrorless camera
:(
Interesting, I guess. But nothing is in focus. It would be nice, for me anyway, if at least one stalk was sharp. It is the detail of these "impossible to see with the naked eye" subjects that is interesting, to me. If I want blurry, I can always take off my glasses. Why not just use an extension tube?
We did use an extension tube, along with a reversed lens. A reversed lens setup, is hardly ideal, but it is cheap. Certainly not the sharpest. If you want the sharpest images possible, you need a dedicated macro lens, which is expensive. This is just one way to keep the cost down.
Sorry chaps, but I reckon setting up indoors, like you do, is cheating or anti-climactic for me.
I've been shooting "macro" of moss, and dew or rain, in London, where the moss, I find, for example, growing on brickwork. Droplets or shooting through droplets is fantastic capture of immediate surroundings.
Anyway, not meaning to rain on your parade...happy shooting.
For sure, indoor shooting isn't for everyone, just showing that it is possible to get great results using artificial light from the comfort of your coffee table.
Kelamaan ngomongya
too watery
Very good, but please turn the bloody music off.
Thanks for the feedback Steve, personally I like a little background beat, but I guess it's not everyone's taste!
What's with the eyebrows ? 😂
?
