    I have been enjoying your macro videos. You do great work. On this video I have a technical question. If you use live-view the mirror has to be raised, otherwise you could not use live-view. Therefore, I believe, there is no need to raise the mirror. In fact, I have read that using Mirror Lock Up may create some vibration when the shutter opens. In live-view the shutter is open and the exposure is initiated electronically, so there is no movement at all. So I think you may have made a mistake in your live-view vs mirror lock up comment.

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  5 лет назад +2

      Just looked over my camera settings and your right :) Not sure why it didn't work before when using live view, maybe my triggers are not compatible with live view. Thank you very much, next time I do this type of video I'll be sure to mention you :)

    • @philipculbertson55
      @philipculbertson55 5 лет назад +3

      Exactly right. The mirror has to be up for live-view to function (otherwise it would block the sensor) so no need for mirror lock up when in live view. If using viewfinder, Mirror lock up does help stem any vibration.

    Thanks for this, was looking for glycerin water mix ration but stayed to watch the whole video. Just a note, live view is shutter lock up I believe, thus the click when you go in and out of live view and why you have an image as the mirror is moved out of the way and shutter set to show the live exposure etc....

    Great tutorial and motivation towards more ideas... Thanks a lot Stewart... Btw, mixing Glycerin in water would affect its clarity and blurred the refraction which you could have with some object in the background: NO?

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  4 года назад +1

      Thank you. Yes, glycerin can affect how the drop looks. Sometimes I use it sometimes I don't.

  • @Farrukhw
    @Farrukhw 5 лет назад +1

    Thank you very much for such great tips. Just one concern: Wouldn't that Glycerin pollutes the water and affects its crystal clarity? I think there would be more clarity in water drop if it was pure and you'll be getting a clear refractive image of threads behind the drop...

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  5 лет назад +1

    I tried to use extension tubes to get closer but I had a trade off in sharpness. Is this normal? Is cropping the better alternative?

      I only crop if I have to. I've never had a drop off in sharpness when using extension tubes. What lens are you using?

      @@StewartWoodArt Sony A7R3 and the 90mm Macro (1:1). The lens is quite heavy. Using extension tubes the lens hangs down a little bit. I can lift the Lens some mm. I´m asking myself a. if a bellow would be the better solution b. filter lens or c. if should by the metallic version of the extension tube instead ob the plastic one.
      Furthermore, I figured out that the minimal focus distance of the lens is 14cm and not as indicated 30cm. I think this value refers to auto focus.

      @@StewartWoodArt Addendum: I tried the extension tubes on my A6000 (outdoor/travel) camera and I get good results on 35mm+ focal length. That is great. On my next journey I can make some macro photos without carrying a 1kg lens.

      I would not use the plastic ones, try the metal ones. with that setup you should be getting sharp images.

    Did you say the backgrounds were custom made? Are they for sale. I know anyone can make backgrounds, but I never get around to it.

      They are custom made by my self. I'm looking into the possibility of selling them in the future.
