A quick note from me:
Thank you for your feedback on my channel's first video!
I've always wanted to do a video on macro photography. My first lens (other than an 18-55 kit) was the Nikon 105mm macro, and I shot with it almost exclusively for a year. Macro photography is the reason I became a photographer in the first place, so hopefully this video inspires someone else down the same path!
The best part about macro photography to me is that you can take world-class images literally in your backyard. It's also one of the best cures for "photographer's block" because you never know what you might find, and there's just so much to be inspired by.
Anyway, I hope this video clears up some of the technical hurdles of macro photography. This genre definitely requires specialized camera settings and focusing technique, but it's not too hard to learn. Let me know below if you have any questions, and I'll do my best to answer.
If you want to support this channel, you can seriously help by following me here at RUclips, or on Instagram @spencercoxphoto! I’m new there, but I’ve started posting regularly, including some behind-the-scenes content when I’m out filming.
Thanks,
Spencer

I can't believe I filmed this video almost 5 years ago! Wow. Time really does fly. Well, I'm posting this comment today because I just published a Patreon page -- you can go there if you want to see the projects I'm working on today, like my ebook on composition and the online workshops that I'm hosting. I hope you'll take a look if you enjoyed this video. patreon.com/PhotographyLifeBlog
I've been a photo educator at the college level for 30+ years. This was one of the most articulate instruction videos I have ever seen, you held my attention for the entire video. I am sharing this with my classes.
i absolutely agree, amazingly coherent!
I've been involved in most aspects of photography for the last 61 years. I agree with Pam's comment. A very good introduction to macro photography.
New to this channel I am hoping you are still doing tutorials
It is amazing, and it is going to sell me a new camera and macro lens. For real, this type of video seems tailor made for how I absorb information. I have my Notepad ++ open next to the video and I recorded the 100mm recommendation, the terminology, etc. Just clean, simple, no stupid music or jokes or crazy idiocy out here, and I appreciate it.
I'm a drone guy who realized one day while I was sitting on a pier, capturing a sunset with my drone, that the bench I was sitting on had one of the coolest butterflies I have ever seen. My phone was being used as my drone screen and I didn't have another camera with me to get this little thing in time, and even if I did capture it with a garbage cell phone, it just wouldn't matter. That was when I started looking for the tools to open up the ground world to me also, and this is exactly the video I needed to break my bank account!
I have to say outside the subject. Your teaching skills, presentation style, and flow are impeccable. I have worked in my field with a lot of teachers and what you have can not be taught. This is truly a gift and don’t ever stop doing what you do best!. Thank you spencer
Very kind of you, thanks, Ray!
Yes! As a teacher of many years, I completely agree.
Video was presented in a very clear and understandable way without getting into all the confusing technical details. Excellent video!!!
you are a born teacher. Thanks for not making it gimmicky . Fabulous lecture
I watch a lot of videos on photography, this was the first one I have seen of yours. Wow, you are probably my favorite now! It's so easy to listen to you and you are informative and on point. Thanks!
Your presentation skills are immaculate. Thanks for the lovely information.
Perhaps the best macro instruction video I ever watched. We will show this to our photography club members. I'll be looking forward to your next video. Thank you.

I just want to say thank you for this video.I bought a macro lens and was on the brink of giving up ever taking those wonderful shots you see. But I watched this and went out the next day renewed. I'm now taking awesome photographs and feel infinitely better about my photography skills!
That’s really great to hear! Wow, happy this video could be so helpful for your macro photography.
Hi Spencer,
Amazing presentation. I appreciate how beautiful this tutorial was. It has covered most part of the macro photography. One can start off very fast using the tips that you have shared without much ado.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Sarajit
I thought the speaker in this PL video was very clear and distinct, & being the fact that Macro Photography is my great pleasure, is why I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the young man’s magnificent explanation to how Macro Photography works.
Spencer, I am a college teacher of teachers so I feel I know when someone is doing a good job of teaching. I have seen many of your videos and read many of your PhotographyLife articles and they are ALWAYS good and instructive. Keep up the good work.
Great tutorial! I appreciated the "why" behind the suggestions, not just "do it this way because everyone likes my photos and I do it that way." Even though I've watched many other macro tutorials, I like this one for expert insights and clear explanations.
Thank you spencer, need more teachers like you
Very excited about a series on macro...thank you for this excellent intro!
I've only had my first camera for less than a week now. What you were speaking of goes way above my head at present but also excites me incredibly. Thank you for sharing!
I am teaching yearbook editing/photography for the first time ever and this was the best video I have found. It gets straight to the point and gives enough detail to engage but is not overloaded in information to where a student would lose focus. Great job!
As a beginner, I have watched so many videos on here! Your is by far the best I have seen! Held my attention while your information is easy to comprehend, you have an excellent speaking voice! Thank you!!!! I hope to watch all of your videos after seeing this one!
A tutorial even I can understand, thank you...going to give Macro a go this summer

No music, no pyrotechnics intro, no weak jokes and long winded waffle, the bane of so many presentations, thank you for sharing your presentation with the information Related to the topic. You caught and maintained my interest long enough to have learnt something from your presentation. 😊🇦🇺
Thanks a bunch! Glad you enjoyed it and good luck with your macro photography!
Simple to understand, great format, many thanks. Subscribed
Very well presented Spencer. Although I have been photographing for most of my 74 years I'm new to macro shooting and have learned a lot from your video. I look forward to putting my newly acquired knowledge into practise.
Thank you, David, I appreciate the kind feedback! Best of luck with your macro photography, and I’m glad to hear this video helped.
For what it's worth, this is the only photography channel that I subscribe to. I'm on intermediate photography level and I always manage to educate myself further by finding something that is new to me in your videos. Recently I started macro shooting and this video was very helpful in giving me a great foundation to avoid many trial-and-error mistakes. Thank you!
That made my day! Very happy to hear you’re enjoying this channel, and the macro video in particular.
Great video - very well explained and the info on camera and flash settings is really useful.
Nicely done on the balance of camera settings and relaxed delivery. It was like listening to a friend explain something he's really into.

Thank you, Spencer. Great intro that covers all the basics. You're a great presenter with your obvious interest in the subject AND teach others. New to macro and I can see I could waste a lot of $$$$ buying "macro" lenses when they're not what I need. You just saved me money!
Wonderful video and very informative, thank you!! 😊
Thanks for the tips of how to fix the flash power and ISO. Smart way to make your flash power semiautomatic!

Thank you for this great tutorial. I’ve been struggling with depth of field in my macro photos and your video gave me great hints for my camera settings.
Struggle no more! Glad we could be of help :)
Brilliantly explained and love the fact that you reaffirm with the written word on screen and do things in a logical way, of course it’s getting easier as the camera or lens, or both that are getting so good, but if you follow the basics as you explain them, it can only get easier and produce better photos. DG U.K.
I receive your newsletter and these tutorials are simply the best - excellent. I'm so grateful for your generosity in sharing your knowledge. This particular one was very useful. I have Canon Macro 100mm 1:1 - now I know why the dance for those really close up captures. A fun learning curve. I'm an amateur and, now that I've retired, part of a wonderful photography club for the past 3 years. Photography keeps you connected to life and this moment. Thanks again.
Great video! One of the best I've seen so far about macro photography. :)
Thanks, a very helpful video and expertly delivered tutorial.
Spencer, I just got a Canon Rebel T7i and a 50 mm 1.8 lens for photographing buttons. Excellent presentation! Thanks for information - best ever.
I've been very interested in this field of photography for a very long time and have been taking photos like these as well without realising that this is called macro photography. I am currently trying to improve my skills in focusing and right now I am not able to afford any cameras or lenses, hopefully in the future when I do have the perfect set of camera and lens I will be perfecting my skills even more. I am going to refer to this video for clarifications whenever needed. Thank you for this!
Great tips! I'm just getting started with macro photography and these tips are a huge help! Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial
very great instructional video! thank you very much!
A great and informative presentation for someone new to macro photography. Well explained. Many thanks!
Spencer - you are a gifted teacher. Never insulting or boastful ... just an approachable, talented guy sharing knowledge. I'm really glad I found your channel and I look forward to more videos. Some questions - Do you need a macro lens to shoot macro photos. If not, what is the point of a macro lens?
Thank you, Mindy! A macro lens definitely helps. It’s all about how close you can focus, and what magnification you can reach. Most dedicated macro lenses can reach 1:1 magnification, meaning you can fill your image with a subject that’s about 1 inch across. But a lot of other lenses can focus pretty closely as well, even if it’s not quite as extreme. Try it out with your lens to see how closely you can focus, and you’ll get a good sense of whether you need more magnification than that.
You can also use tools like extension tubes and close-up filters to get more magnification on any lens, such as a standard 18-55mm or 50mm. That would save some money over a dedicated macro lens while still giving you high magnifications around 1:1.
New to the subject of macro photography. This is just what I needed. Excellent.
Great job, I have already subscribed. Pls share more of your work. Thanks.
Going to try these techniques tomorrow! Thank you!
Wonderful presentation. Concise and very clear. Thank you.
