I concur with your last statement. Its important to respect the creatures we want to photograph. Ultimately, if we can't do things with disturbing the natural habitat, and heaven forbid that there are photographers who would put insects in fridges just so they can take photos, its immoral
Neil I have never given micro photography a thought but after your video it looks like something I could do at 82 years old thanks for a interesting introduction.
Thank you @leslie dougan 😃 It's certainly a genre of photography that photographers of all ages can tackle. If anything, younger photographers often don't have the patience for mastering macro photography 😝😝😝
Thanks @Nicholas Wu - I often work alongside various academics and I'm my experience - a photographer will never earn their respect unless they inturn respect the subject or topic of interest. Which I believe is completely fair. Thanks for the great feedback - really appreciate it. 😃😃😃
Thank you for a great video, especially in regards to your final segment on ethics. It drives me nuts when people have animals in studios, move them around for a picture, or just show them general disrespect. It sometimes feels like people just don’t care. It’s refreshing to see other people who want to share the wonders of small creatures while treating them as real individuals that matter and have emotions.
The hardest part for outdoor macro-photography is lighting! Natural light isn't enough for some fields. I do think that the reason people catch animals/insects in studio. Anyway I love shot outdoor.
I'm only 3 minutes into the video and I have to say... you are an absolute professional. I love how you just cut to the chase instead of having long introductions or demands to like and subscribe to your videos.
Well, I'm three minutes into the video too, and I'm debating weather I should continue watching or not, as I suspect this will be a waste of time. This is the umpteenth vid I've watched where the creator tries to explain magnification ratios, but fails to mention how the distance between subject and camera affects the image size on the sensor.
I'm giving a like just for that final words on ethics. It exasperates me too when macro photographers cut grass or leaves with scissors just to take a picture.
Love this video, especially your final points. As a former active member of scouting, I try to always apply the "Leave no trace" rule when I am out taking pictures. Great advice!
I´m an very experienced photographer but i can tell you, that this is one of the best videos for all those who are interested to begin with macro photography i've ever seen. Thumbs up!
Wow, it may be 4 years old but this has to be one of the most informative and interesting videos I have watched. You are knowledgable, engaging and manage to keep things simple and understandable. I have subscribed to your channel and hope to enjoy many more similar videos.
Such a helpful video! I also appreciate your comments on ethics. As a biologist, I care deeply about the natural world and I'm glad you are bringing this info to photographers who may not have the biological background!
Wow! I don't usually say this lightly. The quality of this tutorial is the top notch. All the concepts and ethics are covered with just enough details and core principles, no bullshit and fillers. This video will now become my highest standard of making any video tutorials, no matter the topics
Your discussion of ethics is absolutely invaluable. Thank you for addressing the matter. Yesterday, I encountered an ethical matter while practicing photography at a park. Some people were throwing bread into a stream to get the fish make themselves vulnerable while a heron was hunting for prey. I felt very conflicted about taking photos of the scene after that. I wish more people in general would listen to what you have to say about ethics while interacting with nature.
This was a really engaging video, informative and interesting. You are very concise and to the point. I also love the part about Ethics at the end. All in all quite a brilliant video 👍🏼
"bring scissors to cut down grass and foliage that may be obscuring that perfect butterfly photo" I see what you did here. I saw that video too, haha. Thank you for the video. It's extremely helpful. And I'm grateful that you try to protect nature. People don't do that often.
This has by far been the most edicating photography video I've seen so far! I've been going crazy to find out which lena I should buy to level up my game in snake photography and now I got all the answers I needed to know, to decide which lens I buy!! Thank you so much!🙏
Sir, you explain things really clear and concisely. Every time you explained a point I noticed how you were showing your point with your filmmaking. As a I have a new found interest in macro photography I really enjoyed this video and I had no idea about the lengths that some photographers take to shoot the perfect shot. Thank you for explaining your last point, I couldn’t agree more. -Cheers
Thanks so much @Mohan Moolepetlu 😃😃😃 It's been fantastic hearing from so many that share the same respect for tiny macro subjects - but unfortunately, there have also been a surprising number of individuals who are vocally opposed to caring at all.
I highly appreciate and respect your discussion of ethics of macro photography at the end of this video. Bravo! And I completely agree. Live and let live.
I love how you turn the message from big animals to these little ones. Your approach to macro videography is so inspiring, resulting in solid footage that's visually appealing and continuously enhancing your storytelling. Thanks for share.
Thank you for stating that people should respect the environment and the creatures in it. So many people, -mostly without thinking- will do just that in order to capture that one photo. Great video, I learned a lot.
Thanks @Still Moments 👍 It's been fantastic hearing from so many other people who share a profound respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃 However, it's also been surprising how many others have vocally disagreed and opposed my statement regarding respect.
I love your video and most of the instruction throughout. In particular, the ending. This is where you addressed the macro world and surrounding environment. Tiny critters deserve to live in peace just as much as any human. Okay, let me get back to on that human part later. As I was attempting to say, I was taught photography by my grandpa (nearly 60 yrs in the biz, sshhh!), and he had one very important point. While it addresses, fashion, portrait, model, glamour, etc. it also serves well here. His point: If something's in your way, MOVE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, not the model or your props! Hope to see more. Be safe, do well. ~Alexa Shaw
I especially like the last comment about ethic and respecting environment...in so many other intros/tutorials/guides people say that spray bottle of water is essential, same for "clearing surrounding" with scissors, things which I never fully agreed...will the picture be more stunning, many times yes, but in the end it is most important to not harm the subject and its habitat. IMHO macro as well as any other kind of wildlife photographers should follow the rule of minimal to possibly no impact. Many times grass blades, small branches etc. can be gently bent out of frame with a little bit of effort and if they can't then one should change their own position, try different framing or angle...if that's not possible, well world will not end and there might be many more better occasions to take a shot in few minutes or next time...and if someone really need the droplets on the spiders, lizard or frog...get up earlier, the light will also be better ;)
Many thanks @Ars3nicGinger 👍 It's really nice the hear that some many others share the same line of thinking - hope as the issue is talked about more openly, it will become less of a problem. 😃😃😃
I have sprayed geckos many a times for a better picture. I've done most my work in desserts and I can promise you, any lizard I have done it on has only been thankful to get some extra water. (Just make sure it isn't chlorinated). If a single straw of grass in the way, I can also promise you, moving your entire body to a new position (especially if you are laying flat, as you often need to) will only disturb the micro habitat more than just pulling out that one straw. Saying that you shouldn't touch the environment, put instead just move yourself and stop being lazy is all fine and dandy, but you also have to think for a bit and consider if it really makes sense.
I cannot explain MACRO photography the way you do, but I enjoy photographing garden creatures with some success. I enjoyed our video and especially your comments on ethics. I wouldn't say I like that caterpillars eat up leaves, but their development is interesting to capture, and I know that the plant will recover.
Coud'nt agree more about respect even the smallest. Thank's for bringing this up. I'm a pre-beginner "macro-photographer" and your videos are very helpful.
What a fantastic video! Simple to understand yet full of great information. I will absolutely be referring back to this video when I start my macro photography endeavors next month. Thank you for this!
Wow! you had me with the content, then the soundtrack kicked in reminding me of some old school downtempo IDM, and the final thought. Your video alone is such great art. Thank you!
Man thank you a lot for this video. I spend a lot of time searching in different videos on who to do it right and this is the most complete explanation in the macro photography that anyone can have. With this basic knowledge you are helping a lot of people.
Awesome video, I've learned a lot. Loved doing "macro" photos for years with my compact, now I'm waiting for a m43 and seems the party has just started.
Neil, I’m just considering macro and found this video amazingly easy to understand. Hopefully you haven’t stopped making videos. Your teaching stile is succinct and informative. I shoot wildlife with a Canon R5, 100-500 zoom. I realize there is no 500mm F4 in my future! Macro is financially accessible and I’ve always loved close up photography. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, hope to see more! Totally agree on the ethics comments!
@KELLMAR915 your situation very similar to mine. Absolutely love every aspect of wildlife photography, but understand that my financial status prevents me from even dreaming of owning a big fancy white lens. Macro photography is significantly more affordable and so far, has been just as enjoyable 😃😃😃
This was a really well articulated lesson in Macro Photography. One of the best I've seen on RUclips. Thank you very much! I'm happy to be a new subscriber. :)
Excellent video and beautiful images! Great pace, too. I also appreciate all the animations and overlays. It's a lot of work, I'm sure, but they add a lot.
This is a great video. Although I already do some macro, it’s still been informative for me. Totally agree on the closing comments. Only criticism is that the Neil Fisher text bottom left obscures the very helpful EXIF data. Perhaps move top left? Thanks for a great video 👍🏼
Thanks @Dave Rollinson 👍 The watermark size is an embarrassing mistake... fortunately it only covers shutter speed - which is consistently 1/60 sec for all the video clips 😃
Great video! You gave me somethings I have to change my thoughts on like, refrigeration of insects. Infact I spent 2 minutes following a Grasshopper but the end result was well worth it. So thanks for waking me up to a few facts!
+Henry Bulger glad to hear it the patience paid off - I always feel that a photo is more impactful if the photographer can honestly say that their was no interaction with the subject. Thanks for the kind words, greatly appreciated. 😀😀😀
Excellent video. Absolutely loved it, and learnt a lot too. Glad that you touched on the topic of ethics. Sad to know that bugs are kept in the fridge and are glued to trees. Really sad!
Wow, you covered nearly everything I could think of! I had been wondering about ethics when I was watching, and wondered how much of an issue it was. I'm glad this is a thing people take seriously. Being able to highlight nature, but destroy a creatures habitat in the process, is not the kind of approach I wish to take. I am interested to know, you mentioned the downsides to extension tubes, but did you cover diopters (maybe I missed it)? I plan on using both, since I can't really afford good glass. I'd be interested to see some more content about low cost/no cost alternatives, like the cereal box setup you showed.
Thanks @Sawta 👍 Happy to hear that you found it helpful and share the same respect for tiny macro subjects. Regardless whether you're adding extension tubes or diopters, or both, to a non-macro, you'll not likely end up with a magnification anywhere near 1:1. Adding multiple extension tubes reduces light quite significantly and a diopter alone really doesn't change magnification all that much.
Great point at the end about taking photos 'in situ' I agree, some folks take it so far, it is not even natural photography anymore, manipulating the surroundings.
Many thanks @Mihai Vale 👍 It's unfortunate that the matter of ethics needs to be mentioned at all, but unfortunately there are still some who don't share the same respect for living macro subjects.
Neil, that was a awesome video ! I assume for what you said that you use a full frame sensor camera. Your respect for the miniature world is great, it shows your kindness as a person and is a very admirable thing to have. Enjoy your day !
Many thanks @Jules Sanchez 👍 Yes, I primarily use full senors for macro work. It's always great to hear that others appreciate the discussion surrounding the treatment of macro subjects. Thanks again 😃😃😃
I knew almost everything you talked about in this video. Very well explained and visualised. I found it very interesting to watch. But what I liked the most is your deep respect for the animals.
Love your teaching style and thoughts on ethics. Your presentation is artful and at the same time technical - very well done. I'm a beginner in macro photography, truly inspired :-)
Thanks @Pinn Sinratchatanan 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍 However, I think you've fallen victim to RUclips's recent decision to remove the dislike counter from all videos - that said, there are certainly a few individuals who have found something in this video to "dislike".
I have shot hundreds of covers and big ads. but getting tips on macro is an entirely new thing for me. love how short it is and how much you get in... note with tripod an extension in the form of say a book would help get the camera close. very goo data you have here. macro makes me feel like a beginner again....
Great tutorial! Really wish I’d seen this before getting my telephoto “macro” lens with 95cm focus distance and 1:2 magnification 😟 still - at least I have a usable telephoto I suppose whilst I get used to some close up shots 😅 great tips in this video!
@Bao Doan my girlfriend made fun of me immediately upon hearing how I pronounced it. Though a few close friends pronounce it the same way ... it could be an East Coast versus West Coast ... Canada thing? It's pronounced properly as: dif·fuse
Here it became my favorite macro video because of soooo many good reasons. Environment, Music, Videos, Macro Pics, Points talked, and a humanity ending. Can't ask anything more from you buddy 🙂. I myself love macro photography as I believe it's the most underrated area to be shown out.
Okay, I've been watching photography video's for ages now and I can't believe I just found you! the way you explain things is just superb and on top of that you're also fun to watch. You've gained at least one fan today!!
I concur with your last statement. Its important to respect the creatures we want to photograph. Ultimately, if we can't do things with disturbing the natural habitat, and heaven forbid that there are photographers who would put insects in fridges just so they can take photos, its immoral

Thanks @Boos Bos 👍 It's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
It’s a strong message at the end to respect the nature even the smallest things. Nowadays, many people crossed the line just to get what they wanted.

I think cutting a grass isnt so big of a deal but bad handling of animals surely is
The hardest part for outdoor macro-photography is lighting! Natural light isn't enough for some fields. I do think that the reason people catch animals/insects in studio. Anyway I love shot outdoor.
Great closing statement. Totally agree. Respect the universe big and small.
Thanks so much @Garnett Leary 👍 Great to hear that so many others feel the same way. 😃😃😃
Came to the comment section to basically say the same thing and was pleased to see this thread.
I agree also, except for cutting a blade of grass down?
Yeah, me 2. Kudos on the ethics part in the end!
Agreed!
The ending! “Chef’s kiss”
Thanks @Monica Alfaro 👍 It's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃

Macro photography is significantly more affordable and so far, has been just as enjoyable 😃😃😃
Man, this is the best tutorial video in the world which I have looking for whole life.
Thanks @T. Smith 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
Really appreciate the bit about ethics at the end. Great video.
Thanks @spongemonster 😃 Always great to hear that others feel the same way about the treatment of small macro subjects 👍👍👍
This was a really well articulated lesson in Macro Photography. One of the best I've seen on RUclips. Thank you very much! I'm happy to be a new subscriber. :)
Thanks @William Sanchez 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful👍👍👍
Excellent video and beautiful images! Great pace, too. I also appreciate all the animations and overlays. It's a lot of work, I'm sure, but they add a lot.
Many thanks @dinnae 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃
I love the last comment you said regarding ethics. I think that was the home run point. brilliant video.
dude your water bottle diffraction example is gold. most simple on youtube 👍
Thanks so much @Chick-n-Tater Melt 👍 As a visual learner myself, I find it's much easier to understand some concepts by seeing it for yourself 😃
Amazing video, very well explained. I especially liked the discussion concerning ethics. Well done!
I agree!
Thanks @Crop Person 👍 It's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
This is a great video. Although I already do some macro, it’s still been informative for me. Totally agree on the closing comments. Only criticism is that the Neil Fisher text bottom left obscures the very helpful EXIF data. Perhaps move top left? Thanks for a great video 👍🏼
Thanks @Dave Rollinson 👍 The watermark size is an embarrassing mistake... fortunately it only covers shutter speed - which is consistently 1/60 sec for all the video clips 😃
this was fantastic - thank you so much!
Thanks @George Thompson 👍👍👍
Very informative. Thank you for the video.
I have wanted to do macro photography since I was a kid, and now here at 45 finally getting to. Kid again. Lot of great information here, thanks.
Many thanks @FrederickTCold 😃 It's too easy to push aside childish curiosity, but if you embrace it - you'll experience the world will fresh eyes. 👍👍👍
being a total beginner this was the most understandable video yet , well done and thanks
Thanks @Fran Misantone 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful👍👍👍
Loved the info, totally adored the ethics consideration! Cheers
Thanks @Laura Cannon 👍 it's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
Excellent video with massive details. Thanks!
Many thanks @Sankar Karuppiah 😀
Easily the best macro photography video/guide on youtube. Thanks so much for the tips!
Many thanks @Justabrazillian 👍 Greatly appreciate the kind words 😃😃😃
You sir just earned my subscription. This video explained so much without making it to hard to understand
Many thanks @Adam Urquhart 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃
Excellent video. Absolutely loved it, and learnt a lot too. Glad that you touched on the topic of ethics. Sad to know that bugs are kept in the fridge and are glued to trees. Really sad!
Many thanks for the kind words +zaid Habib 😀 I'm glad to hear others like yourself appreciate the matter of ethical photography. 😀
A superb introduction to macro photography! So many tips and examples rarely seen on many channel's videos. Thanks for making and posting this one
Many thanks +James Watts, the feedback is greatly appreciated. 😀😀😀
Thanks @carpo719 😃 Totally agree with "not even natural photography" - it's easy to identify and looks strange.
Came to watch a video about photography, left sobbing like a baby. Thanks for that closing statement. Ethics are important.
Thanks @Echo Kellum 👍 It's always great to hear when others share the same respect for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
I apreciate that you talk about the ethic. I think the respect for the subject or for the context is the first thing to consider. Great video! :)
Apart from the inormative aspect of the video, breathtaking b-rolls man
Many thanks @Bivash Biswas 👍 Greatly appreciate the feedback 😃😃😃
Lots of respect for saying that last part. You are an observer as a photographer in nature.
Thanks @Edgar Hernandez - it's been great to hear so many people sharing in the appreciation for tiny macro subjects 😃😃😃
I knew almost everything you talked about in this video. Very well explained and visualised. I found it very interesting to watch. But what I liked the most is your deep respect for the animals.
Thanks @Juliyan Mudrik 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
The zoom in in live view was a fantastic tip. I didn't even know you could do that.
Thanks so much @oTURLo 😃 Great to hear you found this helpful 👍👍👍
RTFM
Love your teaching style and thoughts on ethics. Your presentation is artful and at the same time technical - very well done. I'm a beginner in macro photography, truly inspired :-)
Thanks very much @Rosas Gonzales - great appreciate your feedback. 😀😀😀
the closing comment made me subscribe. I'm glad I found this channel
Thanks so much @Reza Esfahani 😃 Happy to hear 👍👍👍
No dislike once, in 3 years after published, what a master 💪💪💪
Thanks @Pinn Sinratchatanan 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍 However, I think you've fallen victim to RUclips's recent decision to remove the dislike counter from all videos - that said, there are certainly a few individuals who have found something in this video to "dislike".
@@neilfisher Thanks for informing, Neil
I have shot hundreds of covers and big ads. but getting tips on macro is an entirely new thing for me. love how short it is and how much you get in... note with tripod an extension in the form of say a book would help get the camera close. very goo data you have here. macro makes me feel like a beginner again....
Thanks so much @Elan Sun Star Photography 😃 Really appreciate the feedback and kind words 👍👍👍
Great tutorial! Really wish I’d seen this before getting my telephoto “macro” lens with 95cm focus distance and 1:2 magnification 😟 still - at least I have a usable telephoto I suppose whilst I get used to some close up shots 😅 great tips in this video!
Thanks @Harry Ward 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful👍👍👍

Excuse me. Is "diffuse" pronounced "dai-fuse" or "dee-fuse"?
Sincerely,
A non-native speaker.
@Bao Doan my girlfriend made fun of me immediately upon hearing how I pronounced it. Though a few close friends pronounce it the same way ... it could be an East Coast versus West Coast ... Canada thing?
It's pronounced properly as: dif·fuse
@@neilfisher Please tell me which camera are you using on the video? Very good 4k quality
Dih fuse
Or actually dih fuze
One of the best explanations of macro photography I have come across. Thanks
Thanks @Steve Wohlgemuth 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
At last, someone that just gives it to you verbally without the in between crap. A very good and informative video.
Thanks @Yancho User 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful👍👍👍
I put all of my subjects in the refrigerator/freezer first. Please contact me for any child portraiture work you might need.
Ha... I hear they're prone to eating glue and dancing under spray bottles too 🤪😋😆👍
Here it became my favorite macro video because of soooo many good reasons. Environment, Music, Videos, Macro Pics, Points talked, and a humanity ending. Can't ask anything more from you buddy 🙂. I myself love macro photography as I believe it's the most underrated area to be shown out.
Many thanks @prashant saini 👍 Really appreciate the kind words 😃😃😃
Okay, I've been watching photography video's for ages now and I can't believe I just found you! the way you explain things is just superb and on top of that you're also fun to watch. You've gained at least one fan today!!
Thanks @roy klein 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
Your video explains the macro photography basics clearly and to the point. The best I'd seen. Thanks.
Many thanks @Augie Garcia 👍 Greatly appreciate the feedback 😃😃😃
Last message was really appreciated
